Brisbane metro racing this Saturday returns to Doomben, where nine races have been assembled. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:47) St Margaret's Anglican Girls School Handicap (70) 1050m
12 Hi Fiver (Bet Now: $5.50) is a four year old trained by Brian Wakefield who is racing in a real purple patch at the moment. He has put together three on the bounce, the latest coming over 1100m at Ipswich where he took on a decent field and he made them look ordinary. I think back to 1050m looks perfect. He can park off a hot speed and explode.
Beware the unbeaten horse so giving serious respect to 8 Beau Arrow (Bet Now: $2.80). 2/2 so far in his career, the latest came over 1000m at Ipswich last Wednesday where he was first up and produced a brilliant finale from the back to win impressively. Can sit closer in the run from the gate and looks the main threat.
1 Baker Boy (Bet Now: $41.00) is a talented country sprinter resuming for the Brenton Andrew stable. This eight year old was racing around the non tab tracks towards the end of the prep last time in but was racing well and the times he was running were very good relative to the day. Interesting he resumes in town, and he does get the claim for Gallagher.
Race 2. (12:22) Clear Insurance Handicap (80) 1200m
5 Tawfiq Boy (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Kris Lees trained gelding who ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back in a Class 3 where Ryan Maloney gave him such a sweet steer and the ride definitely won him the race, just proving too good. Run prior here behind the above average Meet Mr Taylor was a super effort and third up, he should be ready.
1 Mishani El Lobo (Bet Now: $4.50) is a son of Commands for Les Kelly who had his first run for for the stable three weeks back over 1200m in an open handicap at the Gold Coast where I thought he ran a beauty behind the Stakes class sprinter Dal Cielo. If he naturally improves off that, surely he has to go close.
8 Prue’s Angel (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Tony Gollan trained mare who strung together a couple of sharp wins prior to stepping up to 1400m at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago at the Gold Coast where she just found the trip too far behind Awake The Stars. There have already been two winners from that race and back to 1200m is a big tick.
Race 3. (12:57) Madison Cleaning Services Handicap 2000m
I think 3 Ingeegoodbe (Bet Now: $7.50) can bounce back into the winners list. Rob Heathcoate trains this gelding, who scored a tough win at this track/distance two back before racing at the Sunny Coast where he showed tremendous fight, only to be nabbed on the peg by Tumultuous. Back to Doomben, he should take beating.
2 Brilliant Jet (Bet Now: $7.00) is an absolute beauty from Tassie who is racing in great form since making the trip to the main land. He hasn’t raced since July 28 where he raced over 2200m and again was under pressure but kept finding and in the end just proved too good. Has residual fitness on his side…2000m the only niggle. Think he wants 2200m.
1 Montauk (Bet Now: $9.00) is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he should have bolted in really but had no luck at all in the straight when seemingly looking the winner, settling for fourth to Ingeegoodbe. Has got the fresh legs and a touch of class on his side. Just needs better luck.
Race 4. (13:32) UMS School Wear Handicap 1200m
3 Asharani (Bet Now: $1.60) is one of the reasons why Jeff Lloyd put a hold to retirement plans, so how good is she? We will get a guide to her because there is depth here, but her debut win at Ipswich back on July 11 was that of a very good filly. Has been touted as a filly who could come south for the better races, so if she is to do that, you’d think she would have to put this field away. Think she can.
6 Hallside Fandango (Bet Now: $11.00) is on the seven day back up for the Jason Edwards after racing at the Sunny Coast last Saturday where she got a fair way back off the pace but worked to the line pretty well when fifth to Spending My Time. Up to 1200m is perfect, hard fit and can sit closer from the good draw.
4 Invigorating i(Bet Now: $15.00) s a Sizzling filly trained by Steve O’Dea who debuted last Wednesday at Ipswich where she was unwanted in betting as punters launched into Frangipani Moon but Invigorating produced a brilliant finale along the rail to get the win. More depth here, but I’m keen to see how she goes.
Race 5. (14:07) Programmed Property Services Handicap 1200m
I’ll trust the eye with what I saw on debut from 2 Fuji Flyer (Bet Now: $1.70). He debuted a couple of Wednesdays back over 900m on his home track at the Gold Coast where he showed good speed from the gates to lead and once he got there, it was a rather painless watch if you took the short odds and he bolted in. 1200m is different gravy, but hard not to be impressed by him.
1 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Les Ross trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment. He sat on speed at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks back where he tried quite hard and gave a really good kick under Clayton Gallagher, but just found Hold The Line too good. Looks well placed against this lot.
3 Full Nelson (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Iffraaj for Brian Smtih who was quite impressive on debut here prior to racing at the Sunny Coast where he was wide no cover throughout and couldn’t come on behind Hold The Line. He’s better than what he displayed last time so give him another chance. Just needs better luck.
Race 6. (14:42) QScan Radiology Clinics Plate (Class 3) 1200m
2 Johnny Whitesox (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of Show A Heart resuming for the Chris Munce team. This bloke contested some decent 3YO races during the Autumn, winning impressively over the 1110m here. He’s a very good fresh and looks tuned up to run well fresh based on a trial win here a couple of weeks back in decent time.
13 From Within (Bet Now: $1.75) is a Toby Edmonds trained mare who I thought was a touch disappointing when resuming over the 1050m here before going to the Sunny Coast a fortnight back and she bounced back with an absolute spank job of her rivals. Being asked to take odds on here, which I couldn’t, but concede she’s a key threat.
12 Dream Kisses (Bet Now: $8.50) is a former Steve O’Dea trained mare who had her first run for the Tony Gollan team at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago where she looked outstanding in the yard and ran right up to them looks with a solid third behind dominant winner From Within. Doesn’t have the greatest winning strike rate, but does try hard.
Race 7. (15:22) Ascot Plumbing Handicap 1350m
If they can run on from the back, I think 1 Sold For Song (Bet Now: $4.20) is a near good thing here. Kevin Kemp trains this mare, who resumed over 1200m at the Gold Coast three weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run and was forced to stick nearer the inside, but she made up good ground and got within a length of knocking off Dal Cielo. Up to the 1350m at Doomben, she looks the one, especially with her class.
7 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $3.80) is a quality mare for Chris Waller who was awful here first up behind Shesees Everything before racing over 1400m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight ago and worked to the line strongly but just didn’t have the final punch to get the win when a narrow third to Divine Unicorn. Third up now, she should be ready.
4 Fortensky (Bet Now: $11.00) was a notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1200m at Doomben and once the COT were to be ridden back, his chances went to 0% given the bias that day towards those on speed was extreme. Total forgive run behind Fiery Heights. Much better suited at 1350m and has a decent second up record.
Race 8. (16:02) Blight Rayner Architecture Handicap (0MW) 1350m
14 Road To Heaven (Bet Now: $4.50) is a Kris Lees trained gelding who is 2/2 to start the prep. Resumed with a narrow but strong win at Muswellbrook before going to Scone where he was fitter, appreciated the bigger track and bolted in. Got the breeding to be a really good horse, and to get a trip, so keen to see what he does here.
4 Capital Connection (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Tony Gollan trained sprinter who is having his first crack beyond 1200m and I think there is a little query about him running the trip, but he’s got the ability and quality. Ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight ago and tried hard but didn’t see it out when third to Tawfiq Boy. If he gets a soft run, he should be okay with the trip.
13 Our Jamaica (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Michael Lakey trained mare who has raced really well this time in. Not sure she was entirely happy around the Ippy circuit last time but her class and Lloyd got her home to win narrowly but impressively. Has struggled in town before but gets good weight relief and an inside gate.
Race 9. (16:42) St Margaret's P&F Association Handicap (80) 1600m
4 Looks Like Elvis (Bet Now: $2.90) can bounce back. He is on the seven day back up after racing over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last Saturday where he just spotted the leaders an impossible start and by the time he got to the 200m, he was cooked. Can sit closer from the good draw and senior jock back on. Plenty to like.
1 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $4.40) has really turned the corner since joining Michael Costa. Came with a well timed run to win two back over the Doomben mile before stepping up to 1800m at the Gold Coast three weeks ago where he had the good run off the pace and presented big time to win the race, only to go down narrowly at the hands of Don’t Tell Mama. I think back to the mile will suit and is a clear major contender.
8 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Rob Heathcoate trained four year old who trialled well prior to resuming over 1400m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and worked home well from off the pace to run second to Deer Mountain. Has a fab second up record and does tend to save his best for Doomben. Definite threat.
