Nine races will be run and won at Randwick this Saturday where it is June Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Winter Racing Handicap 1000m
Siding with the Chris Waller trained filly 8 Catwalk (Bet Now: $7.00). She was well supported when debuting at Gosford but just looked a little lost on the turn, losing momentum while the eventual winner had full momentum and a winning break. Liked the way Catwalk knuckled down late, suggesting a bigger track will help her next start, which she gets here, so happy to be in her corner.
3 Lanigera (Bet Now: $2.60) is a very interesting runner. James Cummings trains this youngster, who had showed good ability in the Autumn but his downfall was wanting to get it over and done with as quick as possible and was weak at the end of his races. Trialled last week here and was a bit keen behind them, but for the most, looked pretty good. If he can harness his energy, he’ll threaten.
6 Switched (Bet Now: $7.00) is a daughter of All Too Hard for the Brad Widdup stable who was kept safe in betting at odds when debuting over 1000m at Kembla Grange but she well and truly ran above market expectations with a spank job of her rivals, ran good time and did it with a bit in hand to the eye. Stable is having a good run with their youngsters so giving her respect.
Race 2. (12:00) Bradley Photographers Handicap (74) 1800m
Really like 11 Think it Over (Bet Now: $6.00) as a horse and confident he can run well here. Good effort behind a handy one in Occupy at Scone before racing over 2000m here two weeks ago when back near last in the run before presenting wider on the turn and finishing off strongly to run third to Nobu and Carif, both of which are leading chances in the Queensland Derby, so that has to be good form for this.
2 Itz Lily (Bet Now: $5.00) has to be a winning chance here, a serious one. Comes through the Roses at Doomben where not much went her way but was still sound in defeat behind Etana, with that race providing the Oaks winner, so a definite tick there. 2/2 on wet ground, good gate, back in trip idea and does get in really well at the weights after the claim for Clenton.
8 Dundee Lee (Bet Now: $14.00) is a progressive filly for Kris Lees who is putting together a decent little record. She’s won 3/9, her latest win coming last start at Port Macquarie when leading all the way under a ripping front running steer from Sam Clenton. On breeding, up to 1800m should be fine for this Dundeel filly and overall, this isn’t the strongest race going around.
Race 3. (12:35) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
3 Irish Songs (Bet Now: $2.70) for me. Was somewhat of a drifter in betting when resuming over 1000m here a fortnight back in a Highway and I think even Steve Wonder could see the gelding was unlucky not to win, getting badly held up behind the speed when seemingly bolting and just got out far too late when a close up third to Lifesaver. Extra 100m a big tick. Just hopefully gets clear air this time around.
If she’s forward enough, 5 Tootz (Bet Now: $20.00) is a knockout chance for sure. Resumes for Danny Williams after a three run prep where she was okay without setting the world on fire. First up here with a wide gate, but gets 3kg off thanks to Chris Williams, does have early speed and she’s a mare who does save her best for wet tracks. If she gets luck, a clear threat.
13 Charlotte’s Heart (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Brett Cavanough trained mare who steps up to 1100m after resuming over 950m at Moree, a trip short of her best, but she had class on her side and it was indeed class that got her the win, getting the job done and outgunning her rivals in a tight finish. This girl has showed promise since day one and looks to have returned in good order so not without a hope here.
Race 4. (13:10) ATC Handicap (78) 2400m
12 Terwilliker (Bet Now: $5.00) is the really interesting runner. I don’t think he beat much last time out at Gosford over 2600m, but it was the manner in which he put them away was what impressed me. Wolfgram just eased him wider on the turn, put the leaders away and just gapped them, winning by six but it easily could have been further. Stable is absolutely flying at the moment so a win wouldn’t shock at all.
4 Fanciful Toff (Bet Now: $6.00) a clear threat. The Maher/Eustace stable trains this son of Toorak Toff, who was just under a month between runs when getting the job done over 2200m at Bendigo under a lovely and patient steer from Johnny Allen, who let it all unfold in front of him and finished best. This doesn’t look the strongest race going around so happy to be in his corner.
2400m should suit the Chris Waller trained 7 Tunero (Bet Now: $13.00). He ran over 2000m at Doomben three weeks ago where he lumped the 59kg and they just went too slow in front, with nothing from well back really featuring in a race won by Fighting Teo, who won at Toowoomba on Sunday to frank the form. Did run well in Sydney last prep and now up in trip, he appeals.
Race 5. (13:50) Nathan's Famous Handicap (78) 1200m
Gee I think 8 I Am Queen (Bet Now: $9.00) is one of the better gambles on the program. Talented mare for the Busuttin/Young stable that is first up after a pretty solid Spring/Summer, which included a dominant win on wet ground on Ballarat Cup Day and ended the prep with an excellent fifth in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race. Good fresh record and has looked outstanding in a couple of jumpouts, both in sharp time relative to the morning.
4 Taniko (Bet Now: $7.50) is a handy mare for James Cummings who was a drifter in betting when resuming here two weeks ago as the money arrived strongly from November Man, who duly won, but the run of this girl was outstanding from the back. Pretty much went around like it was a barrier trial from the gate, and probably didn’t get the right luck in the straight but loved the way she attacked the line when clear. Fitter and extra 200m are big ticks.
9 Koonunga (Bet Now: $9.50) is two weeks between runs for the Matty Smith stable after racing over 1000m at Randwick last time out You could say she raced there, but really, she barrier trialled. Just had no room at all in the straight when full of running and it’ll probably be one of the better 17ths you’ll ever see. Have to give her another look in what looks a weaker race.
Race 6. (14:30) Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1200m
2 Southern Lad (Bet Now: $5.00) has been quite good in two runs back from a break for the John O’Shea stable. Resumed here on Anzac Day when a narrow third to Goldfinch before going the Scone Carnival where he got back in the run and closed off hard late to run third to Akasaki. Has been freshened up and looked to trial up really well at Rosehill in readiness for his next outing.
Have always had time for 1 Smartedge (Bet Now: $3.80) and he finds a winnable race to resume in. Hasn’t raced since Feb 16 at Randwick where he was at the end of a long-ish prep and looked to race like a tired horse behind the then in form WaterBott galloper Penske. Been given a good spell and thought his Hawkesbury trial a couple of weeks back behind stablemate Poetic Charmer was more than encouraging.
10 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $14.00) was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1000m here a fortnight ago but loved his run. Got a mile out of his ground and was never really a winning threat but really liked the way he picked up between runners and found the line with purpose, looking like he wants further, which he gets here. Hard to catch, but off the resumption, a definite winning chance.
Race 7. (15:10) June Stakes 1100m
3 I Thought So (Bet Now: $7.00) is just about bet of the day if he runs up to his trials. He can a bit of an enigma, but off the trials, he looks to be flying for Team Snowden. Loved the way he went in a Rosehill trial before trialling here last week where he sat off the speed before Tommy gave him clear and he just went through his gears under no pressure and looked outstanding. Hopefully sits off a fast speed here and finishes best.
9 Deprive (Bet Now: $2.05) is clearly hard to beat but near even money? No thank you. Far too short. Was on him first up here and it was one of the wins of the day. Came from last, spotted Heart Conquered several lengths with a furlong to go and picked him up, and actually drew clear late. He’s an exciting horse, hard to beat, especially down in the weights…just too short.
10 Heart Conquered (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented sprinter for Team Hawkes but is just doing a couple of things wrong at the moment which isn’t allowing him to attack the line. He looked to be going like the winner here two weeks back and was home but he had just no answers for the finale produced by Deprive. Still have doubts on him at a strong, but is getting hard fit now and stable is going great guns.
Race 8. (15:50) Racing To Win Handicap 1600m
Chris Waller has 9 Another Dollar (Bet Now: $7.00) flying and looks right on track for the Winter Championship Final at Flemington. Her two runs back from a spell have come at that track, the latest over the mile where she was once again a victim of a slow tempo and given she was back near last, she really had no chance of winning, but found the line strongly once again, like she did first up. Just wants a sniff of speed in front here and she’ll take some beating.
He can be a bludger at times but I reckon 8 New Universe (Bet Now: $9.00) is going really well for Chris Waller. Ran over 1400m here two weeks back where he was held up when full of running and when he got clear late, he savaged the line to run third to the in form Renewal. His last win did come at this track/distance on Australia Day and he appears to be going better this time around.
I’m not sure what John O’Shea has in mind for 16 Berdibek (Bet Now: $20.00), whether it’s a race like the Grafton Cup, not sure. But he looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed over 1400m here a fortnight ago and I thought he closed off well over an unsuitable trip behind the in form Renewal. Ran a narrow second at this track/distance last prep but his resumption this time around looked better than the resumption last prep. Happy to give him respect.
Race 9. (16:25) TLE Alexandria Handicap (78) 1600m
Gee I think 7 Zip A Dee Doo Dah (Bet Now: $21.00) is a good gamble here. Has done some good things in a couple of preps for Kris Lees and I loved his first up run at Eagle Farm against the bias when closing off from the back to finish within two lengths from an in form galloper in Cruze. Good second up record, he’ll eat up the Randwick mile and will be strong late. Happy to be in his corner.
Every man and their dog, plus cat, bird, snake…whatever other living creature there is, is declaring
2 Quackerjack (Bet Now: $2.10) and easy to see why given he is 2/2 on wet ground and he was very good in defeat over 1500m here last time when second to Kolding, but did smash the rest. The scratchings do help somewhat re wide barrier. Only knock is the price. Too short now.
9 High Power (Bet Now: $13.00) could be the blowout chance at odds. Kris Lees trains this gelding, who was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1500m here two weeks ago where nothing went right for him at all and should have finished closer behind Kolding. 2000m+ is when he’ll come into his own, but did show enough speed in the legs first up to suggest he’ll be competitive here.
