Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville this Saturday for City Of Marion Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:41) MyPunter.com Handicap (82) 2600m
3 Olympic Academy (Bet Now: $4.20) is just an absolute beauty for Grant Young and the old stager has done a fab job since coming to SA. Raced over 2250m on the Parks track last time where he lapped up the weight relief and a lovely patient steer from Toeroek to get the win. 2600m should be okay and I think against this lot, he can only run well.
2 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $2.10) is one of a couple of key threats. This bloke has been up forever it seems for the Weir camp but is racing in such great form. Comes through the Sandown Cup where he did work in the run and had every right to drop out but he kept fighting and was far from disgraced when fourth to stablemate Yogi. This looks more his go and is one of the hardest to beat.
5 Exalted Craftsman (Bet Now: $8.50) is backing up for his third week of racing on the bounce for Grant Young. I think put a line through his run last Saturday on the Parks track. That race really turned into a sit/sprint, which isn’t his go, when fourth of five behind Crafty Devil. If the tempo is more of a rolling one this time around, he could bounce back.
Race 2. (14:16) Tony Grantham's 60th Birthday Handicap (70) 1050m
6 Martinique (Bet Now: $9.50) for me. Mick Minervini trains this filly, who was good here first up in a maiden on Cup Day before going to Clare for the easy kill and she got it emphatically, winning by a space and running good time. She looks to have upside left and a fast run 1050m looks right up her alley. She’ll do me here in a tricky race.
1 Heaven’s Deal (Bet Now: $1.80) is a filly in ripping form for the Jolly camp. Last raced down the straight on Cup Day at Flemington when on speed and fighting on bravely on the bog track when third to Legend Of Condor. Back home, back on firmer footing, she looks the one to beat on form. Just a question of how much upside is left with her.
2 Boots Tarrington (Bet Now: $12.00) is 1/1 for Melody Cunningham, with the Dark Valley gelding debuting over 1000m at Dunkeld where he was quite impressive, albeit I’m not sure he beat much, but he did it at both ends on speed and proved too good. Overall, this race isn’t strong, so he won’t need to improve too much to be around the mark.
Race 3. (15:31) Hughes Limousines Handicap (70) 1500m
I’m all over 5 Tenderly (Bet Now: $7.50) here. I reckon Tony McEvoy has her going really well but she’s just been finding the sprint trips a tad short. Ran over 1300m on the Parks track last Saturday where she was disinterested for the most part but once she knuckled down, she was very good at the end, suggesting 1500m will be ideal, as will returning to the bigger track and back to her own age.
2 Aasira (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Darren Weir trained filly who comes to Adelaide in a winning frame of mind after winning last Wednesday at Sandown, leading all the way under a lovely front running steer from Ethan Brown, who dictated and the filly found plenty late when challenged. Think she’ll lead these and prove quite tough to run down.
6 Splash Some Cash (Bet Now: $16.00) looks a really progressive gelding for David Page who ran over 1400m on the Parks track three weeks ago and was a real eye catcher, warming to the task late when beaten three lengths by Mr Quickie, who bolted up at Sandown last Wednesday to tick that form. Extra 100m might not be enough but he looks talented.
Race 4. (14:51) Terry Howe Printing Handicap (90) 1600m
Siding with 1 Balf’s Choice (Bet Now: $6.00). He is an absolute beauty for the Ryan Balfour team. Wasn’t given much hope when resuming over 1400m on the Parks track a fortnight ago but I thought his run was great in defeat, warming to the task late when fourth to Lord Sundowner. Up to the mile on the bigger track and back in depth, I think he’ll only run well.
3 Hussybay (Bet Now: $1.60) is a Mick Huxtable trained gelding who got a very much well deserved win on the board three weeks ago over the 1550m on the Parks track when sitting off the speed before angling into the clear and putting them away quite easily. Think he runs better on the course proper so with that in mind, clearly rates highly.
4 Royal Rumble (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained gelding who resumed in the Lord Sundowner race from two weeks ago. He never really likely but did make up ground late and wasn’t too bad behind the Mick Price runner. Might need one more, but overall, this isn’t a strong race and he does have a touch of quality about him.
Race 5. (16:11) Barossa Fine Foods Handicap (70) 1800m
I think now that 5 Waltzing Wodka (Bet Now: $1.80) has got a win on the board, she can go on with the job in a very winnable race. She was there to be beaten when racing over 1700m at Gawler last time but she kept finding under Finnegan and in the end she was drawing clear late. Think the 1800m looks ideal, she’s got upside left and is in the right stable.
3 Single Handed (Bet Now: $3.40) looks one of the hardest to beat for Nick Smart. Ran over 1850m at Terang last time where Meech gave the four year old a 12/10 steer and once she got the gelding into clear air, it was game over and he raced away late. This isn’t a strong race so if he holds his form and gets the right run in transit, he can win.
2 Miss Identified (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Travis Doudle trained mare who should be suited up to 1800m. She ran over 1550m on the Parks track last time and to the eye, she was disappointing behind Ice Ghost but in hindsight, the tempo wasn’t strong enough and that was her first run in six weeks so she lacked hard race fitness. Got that now and an improved showing wouldn’t surprise.
Race 6. (16:51) Serafino Wines Handicap (82) 1050m
2 Cashed (Bet Now: $6.50) for me. Ryan Balfour trains this veteran, who resumed over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he settled back near last in a slowly run affair but produced good late splits late when working home to run third to Ascendance. Think there will be more pressure this time around, he has a good second up record and is better suited on the course proper.
5 Zalmona (Bet Now: $3.40) is four weeks between runs for the Peter Blanch stable since racing over 1250m on the Parks track where he got well back off a moderate speed and really had no hope of winning but was one of the runs of the meeting when a closing third to Arrow Lane. Good horse on the fresh side and I like him back to 1050m.
3 Ascendance (Bet Now: $5.50) is a ripping gelding for the Dion Koch team. He puts himself on speed, can run along, can ease but he loves a fight, and that was the case a fortnight ago when on speed and showing superb grit to fend them off and win. This race doesn’t appear as stronger, and he’ll be giving his all as always I’m sure.
Race 7. (17:31) City Of Marion Stakes 1200m
1 Illustrious Lad (Bet Now: $5.50) on top. The Gelagotis boys train this evergreen sprinter, who last raced in the Kevin Heffernan at Sandown where he was on speed and battled away really well when fifth to Cool Passion. I reckon he’s taken a little while to recover from Dubai but third up at this level, he gets his chance to bounce back to winning form.
6 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $2.40) could seal her career as a decent broodmare with a blacktype win. Has placed at blacktype level on a few occasions and looks well placed to get the win. Comes through the 3&4YO Magic Millions at Ballarat where she was pipped on the peg by the bomb fresh horse Bel Sonic. This looks an ideal race.
3 Lope De Capio (Bet Now: $10.00) could bounce back to his best now he is back home. He ran in the 1400m race at Flemington on Stakes Day where he was off the pace and didn’t stop chasing all the way behind Dreamforce. Probably lacks the class of some of these, but is home and the form around him from his past couple doesn’t read too bad at all.
Race 8. (18:10) Thirsty Camel Handicap (70) 1200m
8 Lady Of Crebilly (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the winner if she turns up with four legs. Quality mare for Phillip Stokes who is first up but looks ready to go off a very sharp trial win here recently where she beat Quiddick, who should have won last Saturday, so she didn’t beat camels, and she did it under a hold. Just needs luck from the draw and she’ll be winning.
I didn’t mind 3 Counter Spin (Bet Now: $14.00) at a price when he resumed a fortnight back on the Parks track and in the run, he looked to be going sweetly in behind the speed and once he got clear air, he looked dangerous, but I think condition just gave way. Has a really good second up record and overall, this race does look rather thin.
10 Exalted Lauretta (Bet Now: $9.00) is an absolute iron mare for Grant Young who has been in work forever it seems but hasn’t run a bad race for god knows how long. Over a month between runs since racing over 1500m at Gawler when on speed and fighting hard late when a narrow second to Groove With Me. Fresh and back to 1200m, she interests me.
