Race 1. (11:42AM) Canadian Club Handicap (65) 1650m
3 Hi Lizzy (Bet Now: $3.10) gets the nod for me in the opener. Tony Gollan trained filly who toughed it out strongly to win her maiden over 1350m at Ipswich two back before racing over 1550m at the same track where she had a nice sit just off the pace and loomed large to win but couldn’t quite see it out when second to Hang. Maps super here, blinkers on and Lloyd remains on.
2 Wake Up Jeff (Bet Now: $5.50) rises to the mile but he is the one with upside. He ran over 1300m on his home track at Toowoomba last time out in a race which was hard to see due to the heavy fog, but he sat on speed and kicked strongly under Bec Williams to win. Draws to get a sweet run off the pace and I don’t see the 1650m being an issue.
4 Everyday Lady (Bet Now: $3.80) landed some big bets to break the maiden status fresh at Grafton before a couple of strong efforts at the Sunny Coast in races which had far more depth than what she faces here, the latest of those being a couple of Sundays back over 1400m when a gutsy fourth to the well performed Bella Success. Rates highly here.
Race 2. (12:17PM) Mitavite Maiden Handicap 1050m
Taking a chance on the first starter 9 Our Netbank (Bet Now: $6.00). Tony Gollan trained daughter of Hussonet on debut here and hasn’t trialled publicly, but going on breeding, she should come to hand early and the family has produced a couple of nice types. Big ticks are that she’s drawn well and Fradd is riding in good form at the moment.
2 Pentagram (Bet Now: $5.50) is kept very safe in the market here, with support. Son of Starcraft on debut for Liam Birchley and on breeding, he should get further, but with a bit of quality, obviously on dads side, but mum was handy herself. Draws a good gate and despite no trials, I think he should be respected here.
11 Talapus (Bet Now: $13.00) is another on debut, this one trained by Stuart Kendrick at the Sunny Coast. Daughter of Sebring has trialled twice in readiness for her first day at the races, the latest coming on October 24 when running second. The first one was back in June, so she’s had the one trial this prep, but it was solid enough to suggest she’ll run well here.
Race 3. (12:52PM) James Boags Premium Maiden Plate 1350m
The 1350m looks ideal for 10 Grey Nada (Bet Now: $16.00) who ran over the 1200m at the Gold Coast a couple of Saturdays back. Loved her effort from the back, closing off with real purpose late to run third to Diamonds On Ruby. Was nearly four weeks between runs there, so she should have room for improvement.
3 Eight Over (Bet Now: $4.20) is the big watch here. Former Chris Waller galloper having his first run for the Ben Currie team and we know he is one of the best in Australia at improving tried runners. This horse didn’t quite measure up in NSW. Now with Currie, fresh at 1350m, I’ll be very interested to see what the market does.
7 Was Agona (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who resumed over 1200m at the Ipswich midweeks recently and ran okay without setting the world on fire behind Danger Annie. Did trial well leading in, so perhaps just needed that hitout. $10+ on offer, I think that is overs and definitely worth an each way speck.
Race 4. (1:40PM) Recon Solutions Handicap (Class 3) 1350m
I think back to the 1350m on a tighter track should see 5 Zap (Bet Now: $6.50) prove tough to beat. This gelding ran over 1400m at the Gold Coast last time out and I think that was just a stretch too far for him but his effort was okay all the same behind Awake The Stars. Record here isn’t flash, but this field is lacking depth.
1 Vaulting Ambition (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented son of Jet Spur that is first up here. This bloke was very consistent right throughout the Autumn/Winter, ending the prep with an unlucky third in the Rockhampton Cup, and the form out of that has been great. Good fresh record and has been tuned up with two trials, so he has been given a good grounding for his resumption.
4 One Mansini (Bet Now: $2.60) is a stablemate of Vaulting Ambition who is ticking over okay but just needs to improve a touch to go close. He was a bit flat to my eye a couple of Sundays back at the Sunny Coast behind She Goes Pop but her effort was sound all the same. Has run well here previously and there was market support last time.
Race 5. (2:55PM) Ascot Green Handicap (65) 2240m
I think the watch horse here is the Chris Waller trained stayer 9 Kirini (Bet Now: $4.20). Comes here to make her Queensland debut after two solid runs to kick off her prep. Won’t mind a track with give in it and she did trial up really well recently behind the well performed stablemate Awoke. Good enough form to go close here.
6 Three Points (Bet Now: $4.00) looks the key threat here. Gary Duncan trained stayer who is starting to reach peak fitness now and he gets Lloyd back on, who rides the horse very well. Stuck on very well last start at the Gold Coast over 1800m when a close up third, beaten 1.6L. Up in trip a big tick, fitter and looks right to go.
1 Scotty Be Gotti (Bet Now: $14.00) will love the drop in depth here. Hasn’t raced for over three weeks where he has been contesting some pretty solid handicaps at Saturday metro level and has been running okay without threatening. Won’t know himself back to this level and the claim for Brooke Stower is a big tick.
Race 6. (3:37PM) Canadian Club Handicap (Class 1) 1200m
2 Thunder Rocker (Bet Now: $3.80) clearly on top for me. There is plenty to like about this Darlene Duryea trained horse, who I believe has had interest for this horse from HK, so that gives you an idea of how highly thought of he is. Two career runs have come at Beaudesert. Spanked them on debut before looking for further and outsprinted, but excellent late. Should get the run of the race here and I’m quite keen.
1 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $2.90) is a quality three year old that resumes here for the Gary Duncan team. This horse contested all the good juvenile races during the Winter, and was far from disgraced I thought in the JJ Atkins. Looked forward enough in a recent trial win to suggest he’ll run well fresh, and Lloyd rides.
7 Granola State (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Chris Anderson trained gelding who was completely unwanted in betting last time out at the Gold Coast but aided by a lovely steer from Jackson Murphy, the four year old charged at the line and got the win narrowly but impressively. Harder here, but right down in the weights and draws well.
Race 7. (4:12PM) Channel 7 Handicap (Class 1) 1200m
1 Inspired Estelle (Bet Now: $1.75) on top. Toby Edmonds trained mare that is first up after having a two run prep for the stable during the Winter Carnival where she ran well in much stronger races than this, including a Stakes race against mares. Back to a Class One here and she looked forward enough in a Gold Coast trial recently. The one to beat.
4 Tay Swift (Bet Now: $7.50) was four weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Beaudeser last time out and I thought her effort was pretty good considering she was off the pace in a leader dominated affair when third to Danger Annie. Now has that run under the belt and residual fitness, so that’s the tick for her.
3 Sornja (Bet Now: $9.50) is a daughter of Real Saga first up for the Steve O’Dea stable. This girl had taken a while to break the maiden status but she did it well last prep and was quite consistent right throughout despite only winning one race. No trials, but she can sprint well fresh and draws a soft gate where she’ll do no work.
Race 8. (4:52PM) Pages Event Equipment Hire Handicap (Class 5) 1650m
3 Really Reilly (Bet Now: $5.00) was a drifter in betting when racing at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back but nobody told the horse that as he railed up, seemingly in the worse ground, and sprinted hard late to get the win and beat home a handy field. He’s a horse in really good form at the moment and should run well here.
2 Slydini (Bet Now: $3.20) was heavily backed when racing over 1800m on a Gold Coast bog a couple of Saturdays back but despite a decent record on wet tracks, he couldn’t pick his feet up at all and was forced to settle for second. Much better suited here, as well as back to the 1650m with the tough 1800m run under the belt.
6 Speed Gonzales (Bet Now: $26.00) could be an improver here. Really caught the eye two back at Beaudesert behind Bracteate before racing over the 2000m here where he got back and couldn’t come on behind Endless Days. Much better suited at this level and back to the mile. He can bounce back hard here for sure.
