The Parks track at Morphettville is where SA racing takes place this Saturday with eight races set down. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:41) James Boags 2YO Plate 1000m
1 Crockett (Bet Now: $1.95) on top for me. Son of All American trained by Tony McEvoy who was one of the star trial performers here last week. He sat off the speed under Jamie Kah before coming wide on the turn and as soon as she gave the colt a little bit of encouragement, he lengthened beautifully and won impressively. Confident he can go close here.
6 Cotillion (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Michael Hickmott trained filly by Your Song having her first day at the races. She too trialled here on September 28 and led pretty much all the way. Was tardy to begin with but gathered good speed to hold the rail and lead, going on to win narrowly without really being extended. Looks a ready made youngster.
5 Tequila Time (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of Stratum on debut for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. This bloke trialled behind Cotillion last week here and to my eye he went nicely. Didn’t really want to take the gap between runners but he looked decent enough to my eye. Enough to suggest he can run well here.
Race 2. (14:16) Schweppes Handicap (70) 1300m
3 Paseeto (Bet Now: $3.30) on top. Well bred colt for Tony McEvoy that is first up here off a really good Autumn prep to kick off his career, where he ran four times, the last two being here during the Carnival. Trial win was very sharp and Jamie Kah elects to ride this one. Will improve with the run, but has the class edge.
2 All Eez (Bet Now: $4.50) had been bursting to win a maiden for some time for the Tony McEvoy yard and the gelding finally got it out of the way last Wednesday at Balaklava where he ran a record time in bolting up, albeit the track was a Firm2. Still, he ran the time and won well, so now he has got the win, he can go on with it.
7 Miss Belisa (Bet Now: $4.20) looks a big threat for me here. This filly came with an electric turn of foot to win on the course proper four weeks back before going to Flemington last Wednesday where she didn’t get the greatest amount of luck in the straight behind the above average Octabello. Back in grade and back to 1300m on the home track should see her going very close.
Race 3. (14:51) Bazz's Buck Show Handicap (64) 1250m
6 Embecee Lil (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Ryan Balfour trained mare who is going really well at the moment. She ran over 1200m at Balaklava last Wednesday where she was off the bit before the turn but once she picked up and got clear air, she put them away and won quite impressively. The run prior at this track/distance was a beauty so I’m keen on her here.
9 Set To Sparkle (Bet Now: $3.550) is a Tony McEvoy trained mare who was a drifter in betting when debuting on Balaklava Cup Day but nobody told her that as she led all the way under Jamie Kah and bolted in. That form has been held up big time with the two placegetters bolting up at their next starts, so she can measure up here for sure.
4 Fully Stoked, (Bet Now: $10.00) at his best, is probably better than these, but gee it has been a long time since he has shown that. I will say though that he has got back/wide both runs this prep so he has had excuses. Senior jock on now, third up, smaller field…this is his D-Day for sure against this lot.
Race 4. (15:26) Kitty Kat Pastoral Handicap (82) 1950m
Taking the chance on 2 Lord Lumberjack (Bet Now: $5.00). Former German galloper who had a couple of preps for the Busuttin/Young team but is now with Michael Hickmott. He hasn’t really fired a shot since coming to Australia, but he finds a very weak race, and first up at 1950m tells me he’s forward enough to run well, plus you always have to respect the stable.
5 Kirona (Bet Now: $2.90) is on the seven day back up for the Balfour team after racing in the Tokyo City Cup here last Saturday where I thought she was one of the runs of the race, closing off with purpose from the back to run third to Brown Ben. Surely that form reads very well for this, and I don’t mind the quick turnaround.
8 Star Wars (Bet Now: $4.80) is a former Gerald Ryan trained galloper who has had a couple of runs now for Grant Young and I find it interesting that he is stepping up big time in trip. He ran over 1400m here a fortnight back and did a really good job from the back when an eye catching third to Freedom Road. Unknown at the trip, but he has upside and Grant Young is very good at getting these tried runners to bob up.
Race 5. (16:01) Spring Carnival Handicap (82) 1250m
9 Dollar For Dollar (Bet Now: $5.00) looks one of the better bets on the card for mine. Tony McEvoy trained galloper who hasn’t raced since mid August over 2000m at Flemington where he looked to race like a tired horse behind the in form Alward. Would be worried that he’s back to 1250m here, but the trial win here last week was simply outstanding.
2 Boggoms (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented sprinter for the Phillip Stokes yard who should take some beating here. Just fair fresh behind Chamois Road but was much better over the 1000m here where he was unlucky not to win when a narrow second to Cashed in a close finish. Up to 1250m is a big tick and he has upside.
Back in trip should suit 5 Ample On Offa (Bet Now: $26.00). Chris Bieg trained mare who hasn’t really set the world on fire in two runs back from a break but I think she has been poorly placed and has run accordingly. Not sure she can win here, but I think she can improve back in trip and third up last prep she was six lengths off Hell Or Highwater, which reads well.
Race 6. (16:41) Hughes Limousines Handicap (82) 1000m
Race is really thrown now with the scratchings and with the small field and down in the weights, I’ll take the chance on 8 Federal Court (Bet Now: $9.00). He comes through the Cashed race here a fortnight at this track/distance where he was off the pace and wasn’t far away in a close finish behind that horse. Does get that 1.5kg weight swing and senior jock takes over.
2 Bay Road (Bet Now: $2.40) is a talented six year old that resumes for the Richard Jolly yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since mid May when finishing midfield in a strong benchmark race behind Idatwo. The big ticks are his strike rate on the Parks track, which is lethal and the fact he is a bomb when produced fresh.
1 Cashed (Bet Now: $4.20) is an absolute beauty for the Ryan Balfour team. He has been excellent right throughout this prep, the latest effort being a narrow but impressive win at this track/distance when completely unwanted in betting yet kept finding under Caboche and got the win. Saves his best for this track and has to be respected.
Race 7. (17:21) UBET Handicap (90) 1400m
3 Chamois Road (Bet Now: $5.50) does look the safe way to go here. He has seemingly been in work forever but he continues to race so well and doesn’t run badly. Looked the winner when racing over 1300m here a fortnight back but was no match late for the lethal turn of foot produced by Moss ‘N’ Dale. Should find this easier and rates highly.
4 It And A Bit (Bet Now: $5.50) was solid first up behind Chamois Road before racing over the 1550m here where he tried really hard but he couldn’t quite reel in Our Bottino, who had it too good on speed. Back to 1400m is the query, but if they overdo it in front, he’s the one you want to be on.
8 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $27.00) was unwanted in betting when resuming over this track/distance three weeks back and while he didn’t win, I thought his closing effort behind the above average Steel Frost was more than tidy for a horse who generally needs a run or two under the belt to find his best. On that fresh return, I have to include him in the numbers.
Race 8. (18:00) The Junction Handicap (70) 1400m
3 So Skilled (Bet Now: $4.60) for me here. Dan Shepherd trained gelding who was okay in his first two runs back from a break but bounced back to his best form with an impressive win over the 1250m here a fortnight back under Joe Bowditch, getting the split and bursting through to win impressively. He can go on with it here.
8 Federosa (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Swiss Ace mare trained by Richard Jolly who doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but she tries hard and finds a winnable race here. She ran over 1200m on the course proper last Saturday where she attempted to lead all the way and kicked strongly but was no match late for the well backed Trupt. Maps well and with a cheap sectional on speed, she should get 1400m.
9 Freedom Road (Bet Now: $17.00) had been bursting to win a race for a while and the mare finally got it at this track/distance two weeks ago where she was given a lovely ride by Todd Pannell and the she dashed to the front, keeping on for a dominant win. Harder here, but she has that winning feeling now and could go on with it.
