Queensland metro racing this Saturday heads to the Gold Coast for a ten race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:42) Membership @ Aquis Park Plate 900m
3 Rains Aplenty (Bet Now: $1.65) is a Manhattan Rain colt on debut for the John Zielke team. This bloke trialled up nicely on his home track at Toowoomba, leading all the way and beating Hopes Eternal, who came out and won the Pat O’Shea last week, so the form reads very well for this race.
2 Brinkmanship (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Helen Page trained colt who is well bred and should come to hand early. That looks to be the case off the back of his trial win on his home track at the Gold Coast where he led all the way under Dittman and did it easily in winning by a space. He should go close here.
Does look a race in two, so it’s hard to sort out the remaining trio. 5 Curse Free (Bet Now: $31.00) is a son of Unencumbered for the Harold Norman yard who ran third in the trial behind Brinkmanship, beaten nearly ten lengths, but he looked to go okay. Trained on the track and he can fill a trifecta spot.
Race 2. (13:22) Vilis Family Bakery Plate 900m
3 Fish ‘N’ Snitz (Bet Now: $5.50) is a daughter of Snitzel on debut for the Stuart Kendrick. This girl has had the one public trial, which came on her home track at the Sunny Coast where she bolted up, winning by a space. Time was slow compared to the other 850m heats for the morning but there was only one 2YO trial. Market support says she will run well and she draws a soft gate.
2 Baby Boo (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Publishing filly trained by Paul Butterworth who trialled up okay at Doomben on September 19. Showed good speed to lead and despite being under riding, she found and clung on to win in fair time. Probably needs to improve off that to feature here, but she can run well nonetheless.
4 Miracles Aplenty (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Dream Ahead filly for John Zielke who has looked the part in a couple of trials on her home track at Toowoomba. The latest trial came on September 19 where she sat up outside the leader before Ruby Ride sent her to the front and won with a bit in hand. Stable is very good with their juveniles so a definite watch.
Race 3. (13:57) Vili's Celebrating 50 Years Plate (Class 3) 1200m
12 Freddie Fox Trot (Bet Now: $2.30) is the x factor here. David Kelly trained three year old who is putting together a nice little record and he looks ready for the city after spanking his rivals over 1200m on his home track here a few weeks ago, and was hammered in betting. He does look a likely type.
6 Lord Marmaduke (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented type for the Vandyke stable that deserves a crack at metro level after leading all the way to win last time out over 1200m at Ipswich. Wasn’t pretty or flashy but he did it from both ends and won with a bit in hand I felt. Likes a track with give in it and maps well.
1 Emvepee (Bet Now: $61.00) could be the knockout chance here if they go hard on speed. He resumed at this track/distance a couple of Wednesdays back and his effort was okay considering they did walk in front yet he finished off with some nice splits late. Good record on his home track and for mine he is the clear value.
Race 4. (14:32) PFD Queensland Handicap 1400m
2 Dreams Aplenty (Bet Now: $1.50) is three weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Doomben where he was heavily backed in betting and led for most of the trip but couldn’t quite hold out the in form Lordag. The little freshen up and back to 1400m is perfect, hard fit, in form, and should take some beating.
4 Torgersen (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Chris Waller trained five year old who resumed over 1350m at Doomben three weeks back and his effort from the back was pretty good I thought when working home late with purpose to fourth to Spring Tycoon. Has a good second up record and the big track/1400m are big ticks.
3 Dream Finnish (Bet Now: $7.50) was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1200m at Ipswich a fortnight back and despite no support, she appreciated a fast tempo and savaged the line late out wide to claim the win. Has a really good second up record, up to 1400m suits and likes a track with give in it.
Race 5. (15:07) Taste The Difference Handicap 2200m
Most of these come through the Stayers Cup at Ipswich a fortnight back and I think the value lies with 8 Rock On Ivy (Bet Now: $11.00). This mare was specked at odds in the event and while she got beat, I think you have to forgive her. She just sat a bit too close in the run and she is a mare who is better suited with a sit. If that can eventuate here, she’ll go close.
2 Vassal (Bet Now: $2.30) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who had good support in that race mentioned above and really was given every chance by Byrne but the horse just didn’t quite finish it off when a narrow second to stablemate Loving Home. Think he can turn the tables here on the bigger track and is a key threat.
1 Outraged (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Kelly Schweida trained galloper who also comes through the Stayers Cup at Ipswich and his effort was more than tidy I thought. He just got too far back in a race where those in front dashed before the turn and held that margin, but he did close off nicely late in the piece. He’ll be suited here back on the bigger track and up in trip.
Race 6. (15:42) Couldn't You Go A Vilis Handicap 1200m
2 Colosimo (Bet Now: $4.80) loved the tempo in front of her when racing at Ipswich a fortnight back and once Fradd gave her clear air to the outside, she let down powerfully and put them away nicely. Trained on the track and the big tick for her now is that she is relaxing whereas earlier in the prep she was pulling her head off. The one for me.
3 Miss Exfactor (Bet Now: $3.40) has some big wraps on her so this is D-Day if she is going to head down south for the Melbourne Spring. Resumed in the Colosimo race at Ipswich two weeks ago and I think she can be forgiven for her defeat because she just did far too much work on speed and was gassed halfway down the straight. With a more economical run, she can bounce back.
Not so much a long shot but the interesting runner here is the former kiwi 10 Kim’s Tarzan (Bet Now: $3.40). This son of Nadeem has had a couple of runs for the Les Kelly team and has been quite good each time, both at this track/distance. Won the maiden before racing last Saturday where he was given every chance it seemed but found Sure Deal too tough. Maps okay here and should be ready fitness wise.
Race 7. (16:22) Freedom Fuel Gold Coast Handicap (70) 1400m
I was keen on 10 Red Handle (Bet Now: $3.60) at Ipwsich a fortnight back, but I, like most who were on her, were just left a bit bemused. She got back to near last in the run and never really looked likely but her last 200m or so was more than sound. 1400m on the big track suits and has run well on soft ground before.
The money horse is clearly 4 Revaldor (Bet Now: $3.90), but his chances are dented a fair bit by the drying track. Still, he’s a threat because his recent efforts have been strong, the latest being last Saturday at the Sunny Coast when close up behind Urban Knight. If the track was wet, he’d be on top, but he’s here.
13 Blooming Tycoon (Bet Now: $12.00) had put together several really good efforts without winning before racing over the 1350m at Doomben four weeks back where she got back in the run and couldn’t really come on at all behind Karakabeel in a race where the form has held up nicely. She has a really good record at the Gold Coast and draws well.
Race 8. (17:02) Aquis Farm Handicap (70) 1400m
13 Deer Mountain (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Toby Edmonds trained mare for Segenhoe who had her first run for the stable at this track/distance a couple of Wednesdays back where she was backed as if unbeatable and for most of the race, it looked as if it was going to be a hard luck story but Lloyd shoved her into the clear and from the furlong onwards it was painless. Looks progressive and should measure up here.
15 Snapchat Girl (Bet Now: $4.60) has to go in the numbers. Quality filly for Les Kelly who resumed over the 1200m at Ipswich a fortnight back and she was just run off her legs over the short course and couldn’t go with them behind Colosimo. 1400m on her home track definitely suits and only carries 51.5kg.
5 American Diva (Bet Now: $8.50) is a John Smerdon trained mare that is first up here. Her best form will come over the 1400m and a bit longer, but she can sprint well fresh and her efforts last time in were very good in strong races. Resumes off the back of a nice trial here a few weeks back, and if they overdo it in front, she’ll be charging late.
Race 9. (17:37) Vilis Famous Flaky Pastry Handicap (80) 1800m
Did originally look at this race with 6 Shock Alert (Bet Now: $2.60) out given he was accepted for Randwick, but now he runs here, I’m quite keen. He only beat a field of four last time out at Kembla Grange, but the win was very impressive, he was strong to the line, put them away well and ran quick time late. He’ll eat up the 1800m here and Lloyd on…yes please.
14 Snapper (Bet Now: $7.00) is absolutely bursting to win a race and I think he gets his chance here. On his home track once again after racing over the mile at Ipswich a fortnight back where he got back off the pace and finished off strong but had to settle for second to Moonlight Dancer, who got the breaks nearer the inside. Saves his best, generally, for his home track, and up to 1800m will suit.
5 Kincaple Chief (Bet Now: $9.50) is a John Smerdon trained seven year old who had confident market support when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and the support was justified with a dominant win, albeit in a race which carried less depth than this, but the run prior at Ballina did look strong. Key contender.
Race 10. (18:17) Moet Ice Party Derby Day Handicap (90) 1100m
12 Gatlinburg (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Chris Meagher trained five four year old who is absolutely low flying at the moment. He is four weeks between runs since coming home with a brilliant finishing burst to win over the short course at Doomben. Excellent record at the Gold Coast and with the pace engaged here, he’ll get his chance here for sure.
7 Hi I’m Back (Bet Now: $7.00) drops a touch in depth after resuming in an open handicap at Doomben three weeks back where he got back off a fast pace and charged home late to run a narrow second to the well backed Another Whiskey. He is a very good second up performer and don’t be worried by his zero from three record here, because those three races were stronger than this.
13 Neptune Palace (Bet Now: $14.00) is a very consistent sprinter that is first up here. This gelding hasn’t raced since late July when running a close up second to Khaleesi at Doomben. Not asked to do much in a recent trial, but he does sprint well fresh and is a winner at the Gold Coast, so he ticks a few boxes.
