Group l racing continues at Morphettvile this Saturday where it is Robert Sangster Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Robert Sangster Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Robert Sangster Stakes
Race 1. (12:17) Thomas Farms (Bm82) 1600m
9 Eagles Crag (Bet Now: $2.30) is a quality animal for Archie Alexander that resumes. He draws tricky in a solid race, but he does have a fair amount of quality and his trial/jumpout work has been quite encouraging. If he’s within range and can produce his customary finale, he’ll do me against this lot.
12 Impossible Action (Bet Now: $8.00) is becoming a very genuine horse for the Jolly camp. Peach ride from Toeroek saw him win over this track/distance two weeks ago, using gate one to advantage and driving late to get the job done in a close finish. Harder here, but hard to knock the way he’s racing.
4 Magnetic Edge (Bet Now: $13.00) is around the mark more often than not and could pinch a first four spot at a price, which is what he did two weeks back over this track/distance when beaten just under a length by Impossible Action in a blanket finish. Not sure he wins, but a must for exotics given he’s a tough nut that rarely runs poorly.
Race 2. (12:52) G.H. Mumm (Bm64) 1200m
6 Carbone (Bet Now: $10.00) has been a ripper for Peter Moody and he looks to be in for a good prep. Was big odds when resuming several weeks back at Morphettville but he ran an enormous race from the back, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Aiguilette. Off that, he has to be respected here.
10 Aesthete (Bet Now: $9.00) is a very interesting runner. Former UK galloper that makes his Australian debut for Will Clarken. Didn’t do a bad job when racing over there, his last start being a maiden win over 1500m, beating Bill Peyto, who has also come to Australia and raced like a spud more often than not, so that’s a concern, but this horse has trialled well, and we know the record Clarken has with tried horses.
15 Perfect Illusion (Bet Now: $101.00) is a stayer that creates interest. Formerly trained by Mitch Beer, he now finds himself under the care of Team Jolly, which is the form stable in SA at the moment. Her best form is at 2000m+, but her recent jumpout was encouraging to the eye, enough to suggest she could be dangerous fresh.
Race 3. (13:27) Without Fear Stakes 1050m
3 Aitch Two Oh (Bet Now: $1.90) is hard to beat here. Spanked them fresh over 1000m before being a well supported favourite in the Dequetteville. I thought she had her chance and to the eye was a tad disappointing behind See You In Heaven. Back to the short course, she’s the pony for me.
4 Prairie Flower (Bet Now: $13.00) has done a pretty good job in her short career to date for Henry Dwyer. Didn’t disgrace herself in the Redoute’s Choice before racing here two weeks ago where she sat off the speed and came with a well timed run to win nicely, albeit in a weak race. Harder here, but she’s hard fit, in form and should be strong at the end.
5 Celtic Vader (Bet Now: $34.00) looks like she will be the bunny for the stablemate Aitch Two Oh. Speed demon that resumes after a solid first prep, but her racing pattern was jump/run and try to pinch it. I doubt she will pinch it, but she’ll give a sight and could pinch a first four spot.
Race 4. (14:02) Port Adelaide Cup 2500m
Think Willow can dominate from the front aboard 3 Splendiferous (Bet Now: $3.80). Got the job done at Sale on Good Friday, leading throughout under Jordy Childs and proving quite strong at the end of 2200m. Down in the weights, soft lead on the cards for a good front running hoop, she’ll do me.
5 Does It (Bet Now: $5.50) is flying this time in for Team Jolly and commands respect at Stakes level. Dominant win at this track two back before going to Oakbank where he came with a well timed run from off the speed to win narrowly but impressively. Confident he can measure up in a race like this.
11 So Bene (Bet Now: $14.00) is one I could entertain for wider exotics. This mare is racing so well, but she can’t quite crack it for a win. Her latest run came two weeks back at this track/distance where she loomed to beat Vardani but just found him too tough late. Doubt she wins, but a must for multiples.
Race 5. (14:37) Tobin Bronze Stakes 1200m
7 Extremely Lucky (Bet Now: $5.00) is a progressive three year old for Will Clarken that should take beating. Spanked them on debut at Murray Bridge back in December. Sent to Clarken from Sam Burford and resumed over 1050m here where you could make a case that he wins with clear air instead of an unlucky second to Silver On Red. Love him up to 1200m and in the right camp to keep improving.
3 Bacchanalia (Bet Now: $4.20) has a chance but from a betting perspective, I’d be somewhat cautious. Did more than enough fresh in the Darby Munro behind Mazu at Rosehill. He then went to the Redelva and to my eye, he was plain behind Champagne Dreams, but perhaps 1200m back to 1100m with fresh legs worked against him. Fitter, back up in trip, D-Day.
4 Manhattan Times (Bet Now: $7.00) is flying and is certainly in the mix as a key threat. Narrow second two back in the Matrice behind Ironclad before going to the Redelva two weeks ago and worked home strongly late when second to Champagne Dreams. Dangerous if he’s within range 400m out.
Race 6. (15:12) Queen Of The South Stakes 1600m
7 Belle Plaisir (Bet Now: $10.00) is three weeks between runs for Team McEvoy since giving them an absolute spanking at Oakbank, where she was in the plum spot behind the speed and once presented clear air, away she went and she was dominant. Upside to come, she’s hard to beat.
Jury is somewhat out on 6 Sirileo Miss (Bet Now: $5.00) and how well she is going but I do think a rise to 1600m is ideal for her. Shared the spoils with Foxy Frida two back in the Gold Bracelet at Bendigo. Then went to the Distaff at Caulfield and tried hard on speed but was no match late for Comica. Her best sees her win. Just not sure how well she is going.
12 Hearty Lass (Bet Now: $201.00) can bounce back for John Hyam. Far from disgraced two back behind Aiguilette before going to Oakbank where I’m not sure she was entirely comfortable around that track but stuck on well enough in defeat behind dominant winner Belle Plaisir. Bigger track, she can run an improved race.
Race 7. (15:52) D C Mckay Stakes 1100m
7 Aysar… (Bet Now: $13.00) have they trained him as a sprinter? Last prep in the Spring, they trained him as a miler, and understandably so given there was the Toorak and Golden Eagle. Dodged the Autumn with an eye towards sprinting, it seems, and his trial work has been strong. I think he’s here to make a statement re Goodwood.
Class alone is why I am including 1 Behemoth (Bet Now: $4.20). On recent form, he’d be close to double figures. He was pretty plain vs market expectation in the Durbridge before a poor effort in the CF Orr, but wasn’t 100% post race. He’s come back into work for a crack at the Goodwood. If you knew he was 100% at his best, ready to go, back with confidence, but it has been a while since he has produced that, so watch the market.
2 Savatoxl (Bet Now: $15.00) can be a big improver here. He was specked at odds first up in The Discovery at Sale and just couldn’t hack the speed when down the track behind a flying In The Boat, who you would think is a Goodwood horse. Back home, firmer deck, he can run a much improved race.
Race 8. (16:32) Robert Sangster Stakes 1200m
I’m very wary of 9 Chaillot (Bet Now: $21.00) for Archie Alexander, who has been kept fresh since a 1400m run at Flemington back on March 12 when back in the run and never really a factor, but she finished off strong behind Kissonallforcheeks in what was a high rating race. She races best fresh, she’ll love a fast run 1200m and be strong late.
The race sets up perfect for 1 September Run (Bet Now: $4.60) if she can get clear air and be allowed to roll into the race. She got that set up in the William Reid and the end result was a dominant win, winning her second major. She could have easily gone to Sydney but the stable have kept her on ice, target this race, and she’s one of the hardest to beat.
11 Another Award (Bet Now: $26.00) can launch at these late if the breaks go hier way. She’s flying for the Macdonald/Gluyas camp and deserves a crack at a local Group l. Her last two starts have resulted in sharp wins, the latest being here two weeks back in a solid 78. Couldn’t back her with confidence to win, but wouldn’t shock me if she did.
Race 9. (17:05) Furphy (Bm64) 1050m
15 I Am Bene (Bet Now: $4.20) is a really good prospect for Andrew Clarken. Three year old filly that resumes, having not raced since her debut at Gawler back in January where she didn’t beat much but made an absolute mess of them and ran good time as well. Given a good break, trial work has been outstanding and I think she’s definitely blacktype quality.
7 Rushaway Lad (Bet Now: $6.00) will jump on the bunny and give a bold sight. Resumed on the Easter Monday program at Oakbank when near the speed and tried to finish it off but condition gave out when second to Aray Of Sunshine. Last bit will test, but he’ll look the winner.
12 Naleigh (Bet Now: $26.00) is a daughter of Nostradamus for Grant Kluske that resumes. She was formerly with Will Clarken and it was a rare case where Clarken couldn’t get a tried horse to take leaps forward. Now with Kluske, she finds a hot 64, but she’s capable with her best.
