A bumper eight race card has been set down for Port Macquaire on Friday where it is Port Macquarie Cup Day, with the winner qualifying for The Big Dance. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:15) Mcgrath Estate Agents Mdn 1200m
1 Edge Of Reward (Bet Now: $2.35) looks hard to beat in the opener. He was down to run at Gosford on Thursday but with that meeting washed out, he is accepted here. He is having his first run for Nathan Doyle and his trials leading in to get ready have been quite sharp, plus the stable rarely misfire when they come this way.
4 Tiva Bay (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Tivaci for Kris Lees that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since June 2 at Wyong over the mile where he did a bit wrong in the run and just couldn’t finish his race off. Been given a good break to get ready for his return and he does find a winnable maiden.
9 Binkou (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Robert Agnew trained son of Outreach that is on debut. He has had four trials, dating back to around this time last year. He’s only had the one trial this prep but it was a nice piece of work to my eye at at Grafton behind a handy sprinter in Amirykal. Doubt he wins, but a first four threat.
Race 2. (13:50) Jr Richards & Sons Mdn Plate 1000m
Happy to stick with 4 Cenotes (Bet Now: $2.80). He has been runner up in both career outings, debuting at Coffs Harbour before going to Grafton where I was quite keen on him and he looked the winner. Just couldn’t quite finish the job and was nabbed late. Maps ideally and back to 1000m, he appeals.
13 Tiny One (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Glen Milligan trained filly that is on debut. Daughter of Super One that has only had the one public trial to get ready for her debut, which came at Newcastle, and I thought she went about her business nicely when second. Overall, this race is thin, so watch the market.
8 Ad Astra Magic (Bet Now: $8.00) is a daughter of Stratum Star that resumes. She debuted at Tamworth back in May in what looked a strong maiden and I really liked the way she finished her race off without threatening. Resumes without a trial but first up on a big day, you’d think she’s ready to go.
Race 3. (14:25) Peak Coffee Hcp (C2) 1000m
Looks a race in two. I do like 3 Jacenza (Bet Now: $1.70) though for Rod Northam. He is 2/2 to start his career. Bolted up on debut at Tamworth before going to Dubbo Cup Day where he had to knuckle down strongly late and that he did, winning in the last stride. Back to 1000m I like, lands near the front and is hard to beat.
2 Paradise Island (Bet Now: $3.60) is the other key threat. Market wanted her when she resumed at Taree and she tried hard from off the speed, just failing to get the win when second to Sharkim. She gets in really well after the 3kg claim and with luck from a tricky gate, she’ll be around the mark.
6 Being Naughty (Bet Now: $41.00) is a son of Benfica that resumes for Bob Milligan and is a sneaky knockout hope at a big price. He hasn’t raced since April 24 here when producing an end of prep run, finishing down the track behind Super Dooper. Blinkers on for the return signals intent. One for multiples.
Race 4. (15:05) De Bortoli Wines Ctry Magic-C1 1200m
9 Sharp Shock (Bet Now: $2.05) looks a very promising animal for Rod Northam. He debuted over 900m at Scone and after getting tightened at the start, his chances looked done, but picked up and surged hard late betwen runners to record a big first up win. He’ll love getting to 1200m. Just hopefully doesn’t get too far back.
I think 1 Honour The Crown (Bet Now: $7.50) will be suited at 1200m. Ran well at the trip three back before going to 1000m his next two, winning the maiden two back before being far from disgraced at Hawkesbury last time. Back up in trip a positive and can sit near the front. Key threat.
10 Yareakh (Bet Now: $9.50) is a three year old with good talent. He debuted over 1100m at Scone and copped interefence in the straight when building. He was able to shake that off, balance up again and surge hard the final few strides to win and win well. Harder here, but should be strong at the end.
Race 5. (15:40) Birdon Group Sprint 1200m
1 Charmmebaby (Bet Now: $2.50) is the query runner. If she’s ready to go, she has a bit on these despite 1200m being short of her best. She is a Stakes class mare, a Stakes winner, and is really up against country sprinters. The trial win was excellent, she’ll likely get back to near last but should launch late.
5 Leave Me Some (Bet Now: $7.50) has a real love affair with the Port Macquarie 1200m and is on the back up after racing last Saturday at Eagle Farm where she was close up and far from disgraced in defeat behind a quality mare on the up, Sweet Margot May. With her track/distance record, she commands respect.
12 Leeside (Bet Now: $8.00) rises in grade/depth but she has home track advantage and is flying. Loved her ticker to fight off Sir Ravanelli when winning on Tuncurry Cup Day last start. That horse won here recently so the form has been ticked off, Ben Looker is back on and gets run of the race from the gate.
Race 6. (16:20) Hastings Cup 1500m
5 Relucent (Bet Now: $4.80) can bounce back. Game second in a Highway at Randwick before going to Doomben where he got a mile out of his ground and was never a factor behind Mob Buster an in form galloper. I think on his home track, he can bounce back in what doesn’t look an overly strong race to my eye.
2 Hit The Target (Bet Now: $4.20) will jump on the bunny and prove hard to beat. Few weeks between runs since an all the way win over 1400m at Newcastle, where he was strong at the start and at the finish in a dominant display. Handles wet but is clearly better on firmer footing, so the weather will determine how strong his winning claims are.
7 Olympic Gaze (Bet Now: $9.50) is a sneaky chance. He resumed at the midweeks at Canterbury where he was tucked in behind the speed and didn’t really get a chance to build the revs in a clear forgive behind Point Counterpoint. Might want one more, but that reurn was encouraging enough to give him respect.
Race 7. (16:55) Port Macquarie Cup 2000m
You think 3 Quality Time (Bet Now: $1.40) only has to hold his form to win. He has been dynamic his past two, the latest coming at Rosehill where he spanked his rivals and was arrogant late under Berry, who sticks. He is very short and there are two stablemates, which is scary with this camp, but he does look the winner.
2 Rousseau (Bet Now: $9.00) is an improver. He ran down the track behind Quality Time in the race mentioned above but he was a few weeks between runs and was ridden with intent. I think they’ll ride him more quiet this time around and can run a much improved race.
7 Olympic Theatre (Bet Now: $19.00) is the one I am keen to back for a place. He ran last Wednesday at Rosehill and didn’t really get the clearest of paths in the straight when seemingly having something to offer behind White Marlin. He’s got upside to come, maps to do no work and be strong late.
Race 8. (17:35) Flower Hotels (Bm66) 1100m
9 Joey’s Chance (Bet Now: $8.00) is a key chance at a decent price. He hasn’t been far away in all three runs this time in, the latest coming over this trip at Scone where he got back in the run and chased well enough when fourth to Ranuncula. If the inside gate is used to advantage, he’ll be dangerous.
10 Sharkim (Bet Now: $4.80) commands respect. Pattern was in his corner last start at Taree but even allowing for that, he was dominant from the front and ran good time. Tricky draw, but should press forward and if this track does dry out, on speed will be no disadvantage with the rail back true.
12 Wine Time (Bet Now: $16.00) is a sneaky knockout hope if the inside gate can be used. She got too far back at Tuncurry last time and made up good ground without threatening behind Leeside. Can settle much closer in the run from the gate and gets a big jockey upgrade IMO.
