Adelaide racing this Saturday returns to the course proper at Morphettville for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:31) Mark Mall's Memorial Handicap (82) 1800m
3 Bling Dynasty (Bet Now: $4.60) hasn’t won for a fair while but I reckon he gets a great chance to get back into the winners list. He ran over 2000m here a fortnight ago where I thought Potter gave the gelding a peach ride and every chance to win. Looked home when he hit the front but just had no answers late for the finale produced by Bea Tempted. Like him back to 1800m and this is a drop in depth for sure.
4 Polar Vortex (Bet Now: $6.50) is on the seven day back up for the Travis Doudle stable after leading all the way and bolting up to win last Saturday over 1550m on the Parks track under Jess Eaton, with her claim meaning the gelding had to carry just 51kg and that was used to advantage in controlling the speed and giving nothing else a look in. Unknown at the trip, but a good time to find out.
1 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $8.50) is a former Chris Waller galloper that had his first run for Grant Young last Saturday over 1550m on the Parks track where he was last in the run and never really a threat due to the tempo but was warming to the task very late, suggesting a step up in trip will suit, which he gets here, and hopefully the surface will be firmer compared to last weekend.
Race 2. (13:06) TAB Handicap (75) 1600m
It’s been nearly a year since 6 Legale (Bet Now: $3.30) has won but this is clearly the easiest race he has contested since that last win. His last couple of runs have been good, two back running a narrow second over the mile at Bendigo before racing over 1800m at Sandown where he had to lump 60.5kg and on the heavy track, I think he was just bogged down behind Hostar. Weight relief, firmer footing, back to the mile, looks a good race.
4 Going Gaga (Bet Now: $3.90) is on the seven day back up for the Michael Hickmott stable after racing over 1550m last Saturday on the Parks track where he got into a speed battle with Cavalry Gold and was there to win, but Cavalry Gold was too tough and with the 4kg weight pull, was too good on the line. Like he’s on the back up and he gets down to 53.5kg after the claim.
8 Korodon (Bet Now: $17.00) is a former Chris Waller galloper resuming for the Jolly camp. He had two runs for the new stable at the end of last campaign, winning at start one before a solid third to the then in form Light The Waves. Been given a good break and his two trials leading up to his resumption have been good to the eye. Interesting to see how he goes first up.
Race 3. (13:41) Adelaide Galvanising Plate 1100m
2 Garner (Bet Now: $2.25) for me. Gordon Richards trains this youngster, who trialled up really well prior to resuming here two weeks ago where he tried hard and was good in defeat, but was beaten by what looks an above average filly in That Girl. Should improve with the run under the belt and up to 1100m, if he does improve from that debut, he’ll take some beating.
3 Santorini Summer (Bet Now: $4.50) is a Eurozone gelding for Kav that had been trialling up okay prior to debuting at this track/distance three weeks ago where he sat near the speed and showed a nice turn of foot when asked for the effort and he looked home but was bloused near the peg by Magic Phantom, who was below par last Saturday, but would like to think this bloke has room for improvement.
4 Air Marshal (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Team Jolly trained gelding that was a drifter in betting when debuting at Balaklava with the support coming heavily for Westport, with that horse getting the job done at Winx odds. Air Marshal was back in the run and never really a winning threat but liked the way he found the line, suggesting he’ll improve with the run and a step up in trip. Definite chance.
Race 4. (14:21) AAMI Handicap (70) 2000m
Looks a really good race for the Paul Preusker trained 2 Arty Lucas (Bet Now: $2.15). This gelding gave them a spanking two back at Ballarat over 2000m in what has turned out to be a decent form reference before stepping up to 2500m at Flemington where he was a notable drifter in betting and the market got it spot on as he failed to run the trip out behind the flying Chouxting The Mob. Back to this level and back to 2000m, keen on him.
3 Looking Around (Bet Now: $8.50) is a beauty for Sue Jaensch and confident he can measure up here. Was solid in defeat two back during the Swan Hill Carnvial before racing at Gawler last Wednesday where he sat off a reasonable speed before Pannell found the best ground out near the outside fence and he was too good. Was only fourth up there, so hopefully there’s room for improvement.
5 Colesberg (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Michael Hickmott trained galloper who hasn’t won in a little while but continues to race well and is usually thereabouts, like he was two weeks ago over 2000m when off the speed and chasing but was no match for the in form Super Swoop. Little bit of a query at 2000m, but he’s in the right stable and finds a winnable race here IMO.
Race 5. (15:01) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1600m
All you can do is win and that is what 2 Howlowcanyougo (Bet Now: $2.80) has done in his career to date, winning 2/2. Debuted with a most impressive win at Warracknabeal on April 20 before having a couple of months break between runs. Then raced at Echuca where he was crunched in betting and the bets were landed with another sharp display from off the speed. Nice prospect and confident he measures up.
1 Cosmic Alert (Bet Now: $4.40) should appreciate 1600m. Freshened up after failing in an Oaks lead up when racing a couple of weeks back over 1200m on the course proper where she just found them a bit sharp but stuck to the task and was good in defeat when third to Counter Drive. Think she’ll take really good improvement from that run and up to 1600m is a big tick for this filly.
9 Serious Spender (Bet Now: $12.00) is a daughter of Bernadini for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable that gave them an absolute spanking two back at Gawler, winning by eight, before racing at this track/distance three weeks back where I thought she was given a nice ride by Stubby and was put into the race at the right time to be a winning threat but perhaps she just struggled on the heavy track and whacked away for third. I think on a firmer surface, she can bounce back.
Race 6. (15:41) James Boag's Handicap (75) 1050m
Looks to be really good speed here, so I’ll go the way of 2 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $6.00), who strung together three on the bounce in impressive fashion before racing over 1200m here a fortnight ago where the tempo was against him and he couldn’t finish off as well as we know he can behind Beautiful Flyer. Back to 1050m, looks to be several go forward horses, so he’ll get his chance to ambush them.
I’ll give respect to 5 Seven Year Reward (Bet Now: $4.40), a former Greg Eurell runner that is now with Will Clarken. This gelding has been pretty good right throughout his career, his last run coming down the Flemington straight when three lengths away from a now stablemate in Parsifal, who would be odds on against this lot, so that form reads well and loved the way he went in a Gawler trial last week.
3 Mystified (Bet Now: $16.00) isn’t far off racing for her future I dare say because the way she’s currently going, retirement wouldn’t be out of the equation. Unlucky first up but last time she was really ordinary after sitting near the speed. Few gear changes have been applied to improve her and while I couldn’t back her to win, have to include her in multiples just in case she decides to bring her best.
Race 7. (16:21) Medallion Homes Plate 1200m
Going the way of the George Osborne trained 5 Toolbar (Bet Now: $10.00). Talented son of Barbados that hasn’t raced since May 13 at Albury when on speed and just feeling the pinch late when third to Madam Palmer in a race which has produced three winners, so the form around him reads well and he’s a good fresh horse. Can’t find a recent jumpout so market will be the guide.
10 Exalted Maxine (Bet Now: $19.00) is an absolute beauty for the Grant Young stable. She puts herself on speed, runs along and gives her all, but interestingly she took a sit two weeks ago here and it almost worked, but she had to settle for a narrow second to Irish Mint. Good to see though that she’s not a one trick pony and that she can take a sit. Think she’s a definite winning chance.
For wider exotics, I’d be including 9 Jaamint (Bet Now: $101.00). This Gordon Richards trained filly comes through the Counter Drive race from two weeks ago where she was back near last in a race dominated by the leader and eventual winner in Counter Drive, who really stacked them up mid race and pinched it. Can run well at this level Jaamint. Doubt she wins, but one for multiples.
Race 8. (17:00) Elton John Experience Book Now Handicap (70) 1200m
Really good race this with a bit of depth. 4 Bold Star (Bet Now: $5.50) has been excellent in recent times for Gordon Richards. Just found the 1050m a bit short two back before backing up a week later over this track/distance where he was very good in defeat in running second to Counter Drive given that horse got a real breather mid race then kicked strongly in the straight. Hopefully the tempo is more genuine this time around.
It was really hard not to be impressed by the first up win of 7 Suplex City (Bet Now: $2.45) here over 1050m three weeks ago, sitting just off the speed before being clicked up by Pannell and in a couple of strides, the race was all over and he won by a space, running decent time relative to the meeting. Been kept up to the mark with a trial at Gawler last week and he looked very good.
10 Archway To Heaven (Bet Now: $27.00) is a real trier for Scott Whittle. Been a real model of consistency this time in, his latest run coming at this track/distance two weeks ago when on speed and fighting hard when third to the in form Beautiful Flyer. That was almost a career best run for him despite starting near triple figures in betting and running third. He’ll give his all on speed again I’m sure.
