Saturday racing in Brisbane returns to Doomben this weekend for a nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out a metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:38) Rawgroup Hospitality Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
Can Bossy pull their pants down here in leading all the way aboard 5 Awake The Stars? (Bet Now: $3.00) This mare has contested some strong races throughout the Winter Carnival, with her best effort coming first up when second to River Racer, who won the Glasshouse last Saturday, so that reads well. I think with this Edmonds mare, a bit of cushion in the track will help her cause because that’s when she last had winning form. Looks to lead for fun so I’ll go her way.
1 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $3.00) is a massive query at the mile but he’s got the class factor to win. Ran over 1400m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where I thought Shinn gave him a 12/10 steer and he looked home when he dashed to the front but he was bloused near the peg by Smartedge. Needs an economical run IMO to get the mile, but the depth is nowhere near as strong compared to last time.
3 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $11.00) is an interesting runner. Michael Costa has him going well I think but he’s just struggling to put a win on the board. He ran over 2100m at Lismore just over three weeks ago when back in the run before getting dream splits and chasing hard late when second to Proud Captain. Interesting he comes back to the mile but he’ll be strong late.
Race 2. (12:13) Madame Wu Handicap 1350m
Keen to see how 6 Gobsmacked (Bet Now: $7.50) goes for Darryl Hansen. I know it was only a 1050m 2YO maiden at Rockhampton but I was really taken by the way she put them away late when getting clear, savaging the line like a nice horse. I think she’ll eat up the 1350m here and if the rain does hit, she did win a trial on soft ground prior to the debut, so I think she’ll be okay.
1 Snazz ‘N’ Charm (Bet Now: $1.40) looks a nice colt for Matty Dunn who has placed in both career outings. Bumped into an above average one in Leviathan on debut on the Kenso track before contesting a Listed race at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and was most unlucky when third Kordia after getting held up in the straight. Back to 1350m on the smaller track isn’t idea, but the overall drop in depth is.
Not sure there are any other chances outside this pair, but 2 Knight Mariner (Bet Now: $12.00) did trial well recently at this track in readiness for his debut, the trial being a couple of weeks back when second to Battle Strike. Tricky draw for start one, especially at the 1350m start at Doomben, but stable is having a good run with their youngsters and should be respected.
Race 3. (12:48) Chu The Phat Handicap (75) 2000m
10 Ilwendo (Bet Now: $2.40) is the one with upside for Matty Smith. He comes through the Primitivo race from two weeks ago and I thought his effort after setting the speed was good. 400m out he looked as if he would run near last but he stayed and on the line he was surging again, eventually running fifth. Reckon he wants further, but this is a serious drop in depth.
2 Hang (Bet Now: $26.00) beats these if he runs to his best but it’s been a while since he has shown that. Just struggling to recapture his old form, but he is racing honestly without winning, his last run being on his home track at Toowoomba when third to Benico’s Pride after getting the run of the race under Josh Oliver. Has run well at Doomben in the past so I’ll include him.
9 Bronzegate (Bet Now: $27.00) is the one with upside. The Symons/Laxon stable trains this bloke, who has had two runs back from a break. Thought he was good first up on his home track at the Sunny Coast before racing at Eagle Farm last Wednesday where he looked a touch flat behind Karakabeel. Big tick is that he’s stepping up to 2000m and the overall depth here is thin so an improved showing wouldn’t shock.
Race 4. (13:23) The Sports Hub Handicap 1200m
I think bad luck is the only thing beating 1 Amanaat (Bet Now: $2.00). I think he’s flying for Mark Currie. Thought he was very good first up in the Lightning behind Plague Stone before going to the Healy where he tried his guts out but was no match late for the finale produced by Brave Song. Third up, fitness wise, he should be at his peak, and he’ll welcome the drop in depth.
4 Divine Dice (Bet Now: $7.00) is the interesting runner. He was down to run in the Healy but Chris Meagher elected to scratch him. He instead trialled last week at Deagon and gee he looked sharp, leading throughout and bolting up under a good hold from Tegan Harrison. Looks the likely leader and at his best, he’s certainly capable of winning. Another that will appreciate the depth drop.
Interesting runner is 8 Realing (Bet Now: $31.00), who is now with Desleigh Forster after formerly being with the Matty Dunn stable. This bloke has showed good promise throughout his career but hasn’t quite lived right up to it, with inconsistency being his downfall. Now with Forster, liked the way he found the line in winning a Deagon trial last week. He’ll likely get back and be strong at the end.
Race 5. (14:02) Duporth Tavern Plate (Class 3) 1200m
13 Jami Lady (Bet Now: $1.70) should be beating these shouldn’t she? She’s four weeks between runs for Steve O’Dea since contesting the Daybreak Lover where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a mini kick but tired late when fourth to Signore Fox. Think she’s much better when she has a bunny to chase and if that eventuates here, with the form next to her name, she’ll take some beating.
5 Dream Kisses (Bet Now: $9.00) is an honest mare for Tony Gollan who doesn’t win out of turn but is rarely far away from the action. Attempted to lead all the way at this track/distance last time where she ran along at a decent enough clip and fought hard but couldn’t quite see it out when third to Beau Arrow. Back against the females, she’ll land on speed and be hard to run down.
15 Red Stina (Bet Now: $17.00) is a daughter of Red Dazzler for Rex Lipp that is first up. This girl contested some decent 3YO races during the Autumn and while she didn’t win, she was okay in defeat for the most part. This looks a strong Class 3 and she resumes without a public trial but I’d assume she’s had a jumpout or two at Toowoomba. She’ll get back and be strong late.
Race 6. (14:42) Casa Cibo Plate (Class 3) 1200m
4 New Horizons (Bet Now: $4.20) has been a bit hit and miss this time in but no doubt his best can measure up to these. He ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast just under four weeks ago where he got a good run off the speed and tried hard but was no match late for the then in form Johnny Whitesox. Has run well at Doomben in the past and he does tend to race best with fresh legs.
If someone said to me “Here is $100. Put it on 5 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $4.00) to win or we’ll throw you off a bridge” I’d be tempted to enjoy being throwed. He’s a bludger of a horse, but this is a bludger of a race and his best is far superior to anything engaged here. Comes here off one trial at Warwick Farm where he closed off okay under riding. Market will be the guide. A win wouldn’t surprise, but couldn’t back him.
2 Cordoned (Bet Now: $9.00) has been pretty at his past couple for the Doug Roberts stable. This guy is three weeks between runs since racing at the Gold Coast when back in the run and closing off well late to run second to Precipitate. He gets the claim and a soft draw which are two ideal ticks in a really thin race and at double figures, I could easily entertain him each way.
Race 7. (15:22) Beach House Handicap (1MW) 1350m
7 Tokoriki Lad (Bet Now: $2.50) doesn’t have the greatest of records at Doomben but this looks a lovely race for him. He has contested some strong races right throughout the Winter Carnival, with efforts behind the likes of Cruze, Chapter And Verse plus Smartedge…that just reads so well for this and provided he has enough petrol in the ticket, I think he’ll take a power of beating.
1 Apoloboom (Bet Now: $6.50) has been a beauty for a while and has held his form well since being transferred to Lindsay Hatch. Thought there was plenty of merit in his Beaudesert Cup win last time out because he had to work to find the lead and he wasn’t exactly taking on scrubs. Was there to be beaten but found plenty and was too good. Looks to get a good run from the gate and is a proven city performer.
4 Marksfield (Bet Now: $13.00) is an absolute beauty for the Matt Kropp stable who comes through the Battle Of The Bush where he did plenty of work to land on speed and was entitled to drop away but kept finding and was only bloused late by Hanover Square in a gutsy effort. Has been a proven city performer in the past, going back to February this year, so he’s a definite chance.
Race 8. (16:02) Bottle-O Handicap (Class 6) 1110m
Looks like Crafty Cop will lead and if so, hoping that 6 Hirtshals (Bet Now: $5.00) can hold his back. This mare was freshened up prior to racing at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and it was a big win from the back under a brilliant steer from Larry Cassidy. Gets the claim for Corey Bayliss and if the mare can hold the box seat behind Crafty Cop, she’ll take some beating I’m sure.
A win isn’t far away for 8 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $6.50) I don’t think. He was good I thought behind Spiritual Pursuit at Randwick two weeks ago, ducking and weaving his way through the field and made ground late. He’s much better on dry-ish ground, which I think he’ll get here, and should be much firmer compared to two weeks back and I think he’s a must include against this lot.
4 Mogador (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very talented animal that has had a couple of preps for the Heinrich stable. Was formerly with Godolphin and has promised a fair bit since day one. Could this be the prep where he goes on with it? Loved the way he put them away to win first up at Toowoomba after getting back in the run. That should do his confidence the world of good and I think he’ll measure up.
Race 9. (16:37) TAB Handicap 1350m
8 Red Chase (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Red Element for the Desleigh Forster stable that has been good in two runs back from a spell. Arguably should have won first up but got hampered a couple of times in the straight. Then went to Eagle Farm last Wednesday where he found the best ground and surged hard late to get the win. Like him up to 1350m and hard to knock the way he’s going.
4 Churning (Bet Now: $3.50) does bring the right form into this having run second to Vega One at Eagle Farm two weeks back, closing off nicely from off the speed to run second, albeit never threatening to pick up the Gollan runner. Placed in her lone run at the track/distance and the depth isn’t as strong this time around. Looks the one to beat, just hasn’t won in a few runs now.
3 Plumaro (Bet Now: $10.00) is one filly who will appreciate the Doomben 1350m. She ran over 1400m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she got back in the run and was never really in the hunt behind Vega One. This looks a bit of a drop in depth for her and earlier in her career, she was running well in these kind of races so an improved showing wouldn’t shock at all.
