Group l racing continues at Eandwick this Saturday, where it is Randwick Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:40) Fireball Stks 1100m
6 Andermatt (Bet Now:Β $3.50 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Not sure what to make of his first up win at Rosehill. First run since May and was visually quite impressive in winning, wearing down a very game Vulpine and running some very sharp late splits. But, they were entitled to given the anchor drop from Vulpine. Keen to see what the market does.
1 Wild Ruler (Bet Now:Β $1.65 TOP ODDS) has the runs on the board and class to win. Resumes for Team Snowden, having not raced since the Coolmore Stud when a game third to star filly September Run. He has looked strong in a couple of trials to get ready and should lead for fun. The query will be if Andermatt lands box seat, with that horse having race fitness and electric change up speed.
I like the fact that John Thompson has kept 2 Mamaragan (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS) to sprint trips. That is when he was at his best as a juvenile. They tried to stretch him out in trip in the Spring but he wasn’t as effective. Trialled well leading into this and we know his best is certainly good enough to win.
Race 2. (13:15) Todman Stakes 1200m
7 Remarque (Bet Now:Β $5.00 TOP ODDS) for me. Team Hawkes trained colt that trialled like a bomb prior to debuting at Rosehill and despite doing a bit wrong in the straight, he was far too good for them. Been freshened up with the Slipper in mind and once again, closed off strongly in a trial. Keen to see how he goes against the big boys but he could well be the biggest boy.
Enormous respect 5 Stay Inside (Bet Now:Β $3.10 TOP ODDS). Have to be after his win three weeks ago. It was arrogant and outstanding the turn of foot he produced between the 400m-200m when J Mac gave him clear air and a squeeze. It was that of a Slipper horse and I’m confident he can confirm that here.
3 Anamoe (Bet Now:Β $10.00 TOP ODDS) is the clear value in the race. I think the Blue Diamond will hold up and his effort in defeat was very good given he was back near last in the run and didn’t get a proper cart into the race. Blinkers off tells me they might have eyes on the Sires, but a win here and he’s a definite Slipper contender.
Race 3. (13:50) Reisling Stks 1200m
I reckon there is a decent engine under the hood of 6 Joyous Legend (Bet Now:Β $6.50 TOP ODDS) for the Ryan/Alexiou camp. We see so often 2YO’s and their great record at beating older horses. That continued with this girl at Gosford and in two 1000m races for the meeting, her time was clearly the fastest, which is a good sign for a youngster on debut. Confident she can measure up to these.
Big watch here on 1 Swift Witness (Bet Now:Β $6.00 TOP ODDS) for the WaterBott camp. Smashed the clock when winning the Pearl the week before the Magic Millions, and then in the big dance, she didn’t fire at all, seemingly not handling the seven day back up. Freshened up with a nice trial under the belt and we saw this with the stable last year with Farnan.
3 Vianello (Bet Now:Β $6.00 TOP ODDS) is the one with hard race fitness and experience, which should hold her in good stead. She tried hard three weeks back in the Pierro Plate but was just no match for Stay Inside, who went like a jet. Think 1200m is okay, and overall, this isn’t a strong edition of the Reisling to my eye.
Race 4. (14:25) Randwick City Stakes 2000m
Keen on 7 Mount Popa (Bet Now:Β $2.30 TOP ODDS). He was outstanding first up at Randwick several weeks ago. Chased a good speed and loomed to win. Just couldn’t quite get there in a bob of the head finish alongside Shared Ambition. He’ll take good improvement off that and for mine takes a power of beating.
4 Collide (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) is the big watch here from a Sydney Cup perspective. Makes his Australian debut for Kris Lees and was going to run in the Melbourne Cup last year but was down in the order of entry and couldn’t get a run. Think whatever he does here he will improve on, recent trial was okay, but he might well just have class to beat these.
5 Paths Of Glory (Bet Now:Β $21.00 TOP ODDS) can run an improved race at odds. Resumed in the Parramatta Cup at Rosehill and I’d be forgiving of his effort. One, he hates wet tracks and two, the pattern for the meeting was on speed/rail, so combine all that, he had no chance. Rachel King gets on well with him and up to 2000m on firmer footing, with a positive steer, think runs well.
Race 5. (15:05) Challenge Stks 1000m
1 Nature Strip… (Bet Now:Β $1.65) why did we ever doubt him? Or do we say Jamie Kah is to Nature Strip what Riggs is to Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon ie a perfect match? She got him to relax beautifully in the run in the Lightning and once that happened, it was race over. The query is where he gets to in the run here and how much work he has to do to lead.
If there are eight runners that go to the gates here, I think 4 Splintex (Bet Now:Β $13.00) is a great gamble at the odds. This is a contender or pretender prep for Splintex. Didn’t quite measure up in the Spring, but go back first up in the Concorde, he warmed to the task very late and was taking good ground off Nature Strip. His trials have been strong and he is one horse who can sit off this brutal speed and launch late.
I’m very interested in 2 Eduardo (Bet Now:Β $9.00) for Joe Pride. He really turned his form around in the Spring, going on to contest The Everest where the tactics were horribly wrong and he failed to fire a shot, rightfully so, given the run he had. Been given a good break and his recent Canterbury trial was quite good.
Race 6. (15:45) Wenona Girl 1200m
6 Emanate (Bet Now:Β $1.80) looks a Stakes quality mare in the making and I think she can confirm that here. Admittedly had a peach run and peach steer two weeks ago at Rosehill but still had to take advantage of it and that she did. She produced some of the best late splits of the meeting and did it with something in hand. That was her first run in a month, so there should be improvement to come.
2 Fiesta (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is a quality mare for Chris Waller that resumes. They reverted her to sprinting in the Spring and the end result was a couple of explosive wins at Stakes level before being far from disgraced in The Hunter. She’s very good when produced fresh and an improving track is music to her ears.
4 Seasons (Bet Now:Β $17.00) has always been a mare I’ve had time for. Got a couple of Group placings in the Spring but just couldn’t quite crack it for a win against the better class mares. Think 1200m is her ideal trip so that is her advantage over a few of these, and she has trialled up super leading in.
Race 7. (16:25) Randwick Guineas 1600m
We keep waiting for a three year old over these longer trips to stand up and declare themselves the best. I saw enough in the first up run to suggest 7 Mo’Unga (Bet Now:Β $4.60) can be that candidate. He resumed in a very fast run CS Hayes three weeks ago when wide no cover for the trip and gee he was brave in defeat I thought behind Tagaloa in a race where the form stood up big time in the Australian Guineas. He brings the different form, got upside and will eat up a mile at Randwick.
1 Aegon (Bet Now:Β $2.20) looks to have those from the Hobartville covered. Star Kiwi that just made a mess of them two weeks ago at his Australian debut, producing a sharp finale to prove way too good. The knock I have is the times. Given they are supposed top level three year olds, they ran average time relative to the meeting, so they will need to improve on that to make that the A1 form reference.
4 Prime Star (Bet Now:Β $31.00) is a beauty for the Freedman camp. He doesn’t have the high profile of some of the others engaged here, but gee he tries hard. That was evident in the Hobartville and he gave a really good kick on speed when third to Aegon. If he can get a soft run in transit, he’ll be dangerous at a price.
Race 8. (17:05) Canterbury Stks 1300m
This is contender or pretender time for 1 Bivouac (Bet Now:Β $2.45). If he is as good as most think he is, he has to be putting this field away. 1000m wasn’t his go first up in the Lightning but that being said, he was one of the first beat and was disappointing. If he can overcome a tricky draw and get cover, at his best, he’s the one to beat.
7 Masked Crusader… (Bet Now:Β $6.00) can he be trusted? If you can trust what he did first up will be produced here, then he goes close to winning. It was an enormous win from him, requiring him to produce some of the best late splits of the meeting to wear down Southern Lad. Just has to produce that here to measure up.
6 Dawn Passage (Bet Now:Β $13.00) is a quality animal for the WaterBott camp that resumes. It was a carefully planned Spring prep for this four year old and it all but worked. Ran so well, but found one or two better on the day in each run. Has trialled up super in readiness for his return and has class, plus a good racing pattern. Hard to beat.
Race 9. (17:40) Sharp Extensive It Aspiration 1600m
No idea what to do in this race. When that is the case, go back to the class horse of the field, and that is clearly 1 Nettoyer (Bet Now:Β $16.00), who won this race last year. Overall, was a disappointing Spring prep, but for the most part, she did take on A1 horse flesh, and even contested a Cox Plate. Trials leading in have been solid and Wendy Roche is keen on her mare running well first up at her pet track/distance.
5 She’s Ideel (Bet Now:Β $4.60) looks a perfect candidate for the Epona in two weeks time but she was too good of a run first up to ignore. She was excellent in the Millie Fox, producing really good late splits nearer the inside behind Subpoenaed. Ticking along beautifully she is and I’d suggest is hard to beat.
16 Le Lude (Bet Now:Β $8.00) looks a perfect candidate for the Epona in two weeks time but she was too good of a run first up to ignore. She was excellent in the Millie Fox, producing really good late splits nearer the inside behind Subpoenaed. Ticking along beautifully she is and I’d suggest is hard to beat.
