Feature racing at Morphettville continues this Saturday where it is Birthday Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out eleven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out two metres from the 2000m-1800m; Out eight metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (12:51) Terry Howe Printing (bm72) 1200m
4 Ironclad (Bet Now:Β $3.20) looks a near good thing to my eye. From memory, I can’t recall Will Clarken training for Australian Bloodstock so I dare say this is the first runner and I think it will be the first winner. Former UK galloper who did his best racing over further, but gee the Gawler trial was the standout performance of the session. The change up speed he produced was outstanding. Produces that here, he wins and is one of the better bets across Australia for Saturday.
5 Lake’s Folly (Bet Now:Β $7.00) deserves another chance. Michael Hickmott trained gelding that has had a couple of runs for the new stable, winning first up here on Boxing Day before going to Murray Bridge where he was a touch disappointing I thought behind Second Slip, who franked the form by winning at Sandown. Tends to race best with fresh legs so like the break between runs and tick over trial was solid.
The best version of 6 Aten (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is certainly capable. Three weeks between runs since racing at Murray Bridge where on face value, she was pretty plain behind Hankstar, but was found to be lame post race, so there were excuses. If she runs up to anywhere near her best, she can take this out.
Race 2. (13:26) White Marquee Mdn Plate 1200m
Really keen to see 3 Muffla (Bet Now:Β $6.00) resume for Peter Blanch. Showed good promise in his first prep in three runs, placing each time and looking to have city class ability despite not winning. He looks to have enjoyed the break and has come back a better horse based on his trial. Think he wins and can measure up in better races during the Carnival.
4 Daily Spirit (Bet Now:Β $4.80) is a consistent filly for the Macdonald/Gluyas team but do feel she is a bit limited. But, she is hard fit and has been close up without winning, the latest run seeing her finish third to Echoes In Eternity, who won last Saturday again to frank the form. Runs well…just not sure I could back her to win.
9 So Bene (Bet Now:Β $4.80) is a daughter of Hinchinbrook for Phillip Stokes that is on debut. She has had a couple of jumpouts to get ready for start one and has looked pretty good each time she has stepped out. Bred to be a handy one and stable can produce an impressive first starter, so watch the market.
Race 3. (14:01) Chalk Hill (bm82) 1100m
Back up to 1100m, giving 5 Sizzlefly (Bet Now:Β $3.70) another chance. Let the punters down last time out over 1000m at Murray Bridge but in her defence, she was back near last, coming back in trip and just couldn’t get into a decent rhythm. Hard fit now and back up in trip, she’s going to take some beating.
1 Ididitforlove (Bet Now:Β $2.15) is flying for Patrick Payne. He has won three of his four runs this time in, the latest win coming over 1000m at Sandown two weeks ago when ridden a treat by Campbell Rawiller and finishing best in a driving go. If this track was bone dry, I would declare him. Just not sure about a rain affected track.
6 Oh Mo (Bet Now:Β $10.00) is a Sam Burford trained sprinter that resumes. Hasn’t raced since July 18 on the Parks track when winning impressively, driving hard late from off the speed to get up and win. He is a horse who can sprint well fresh and looked well within himself in a recent Gawler trial.
Race 4. (14:36) Tab Adelaide Cup Day 8/3-bm68 1050m
I’m keen on Ironclad in the first and the horse he ran over the top of in the trial was 1 Call It A Day (Bet Now:Β $9.50) and he himself looked to move very well on speed under little pressure in a good piece of work. Easiest race he has contested in some time and gets in well after the claim for Opperman. He’s a worthy gamble I feel at odds.
5 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now:Β $3.40) is a nippy customer who hasn’t been far away of late. Ran over 1100m at Gawler two weeks ago when setting a solid tempo in front and tried hard to kick on and win but couldn’t quite finish it off when beaten narrowly by Rock Hard. He’ll look the winner at some stage I’m sure. Last bit will test.
9 La Vita (Bet Now:Β $7.00) has quality and should always be respected when she comes back to this level. Forget she went two back at Morphettville last time, doing too much work to get on speed and was a tired horse late when last to Aten. Then went to Gawler and was much better when fourth to Rock Hard. One for exotics.
Race 5. (15:11) Soul Growers (bm86) 1600m
2000m back to 1600m looks tricky with 4 Duke Of Plumpton (Bet Now:Β $4.40) but Blinkers first time should sharpen him up. He ran over 2000m at Caulfield on Australia Day and worked home strongly when second to an in form Takumi. Gets in very well after the claim and will love a drop of rain to hit the track.
Keen to see how 3 Ritratto (Bet Now:Β $3.00) goes. He did an outstanding job for Mick Huxtable when last in work, winning four races and getting his rating up. I dare say the stable will have eyes on a Stakes race during the Carnival, but he has residual fitness and looked sharp in a Gawler trial win last week.
1 Dexter You Devil (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is nearing a win I feel for Shayne Cahill. Was keen on him three weeks ago at Murray Bridge and 300m out, he looked home when presented. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up third to Don’tdreamitsover. Like him at Morphettville and he can finish over the top.
Race 6. (15:46) Tab Long May We Play (bm68) 2040m
5 Monteferrante (Bet Now:Β $4.00) doesn’t have the best of winning strike rates but reckon she can measure up to this lot. Ran in a much easier race at Gawler a few weeks ago where she spotted them a decent start and worked home well late for second, albeit five lengths away from impressive winner Stan The Caddy. Dangerous if she can be within range on the turn.
6 Master Of Zerprise (Bet Now:Β $4.80) has found a purple patch for Mick Huxtable, winning two on the bounce with some really good placement from the stable. They tried him in harder races and ran well without winning so the stable sent him back to 58 grade and the result was a couple of wins. Now his confidence is up, he can go on with it.
9 Hobo Bob (Bet Now:Β $11.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but the thing he has going for him is the fact he is a last start Saturday metro winner. Admittedly he wasn’t wanted in betting and not expected to trouble them, but he found plenty under pressure and was too good. Not sure he wins again, but one for multiples.
Race 7. (16:26) Birthday Cup 2040m
7 Don’tdreamitsover (Bet Now:Β $4.60) is putting together a tidy record for Michael Hickmott and I think has to be respected again. Loved the way he toughed it out to win at Murray Bridge three weeks ago. He was there to be run down but showed good ticker late under Jess Eaton to get the win in what was a big day for both stable and rider. Keen to see if he can repeat the dose.
I thought there was a lot of quality about the win of 5 Farooq (Bet Now:Β $3.90) at Murray Bridge three weeks ago at this trip. Overall, wasn’t the strongest race I’ve seen, but the manner in which he put them away was very impressive and it was a glimpse of what he produced earlier in his career when he was contesting good class Stakes races. Hard to beat.
3 Eperdument (Bet Now:Β $11.00) is ticking along nicely towards the Adelaide Cup I think. Was at the crossroads somewhat but she bounced back to positive form on Sunday in taking out the Strathalbyn Cup under a confident steer from Paul Gatt. Now she has a win on the board, could well go on with it.
Race 8. (17:06) Adelaide Galvanising (rs0mw) 1600m
Patrick Payne looks to have found a very winnable race for 3 Cafe Tortoni (Bet Now:Β $4.00). He has had two runs back from a two month break, both coming over 1400m. Kept finding late to get up and win at Warrnambool before going to Pakenham where he ran a close up fourth, racing like he wants further, which he gets. The one to beat.
7 Zoulah (Bet Now:Β $4.50) has been a bit hit and miss this prep, but her best is certainly good enough to take this out. Wide no cover in a total forgive two back at Flemington before racing at Murray Bridge where she got back off the speed and worked home okay late in the piece when third to Hobo Bob. Hard to beat here.
8 Getouttheway (Bet Now:Β $27.00) has been up a while for Sue Nolan but continues to race in solid form. Be forgiving of his last start effort at Gawler when wide no cover and doing plenty of work to get on speed. That hard work told on him late and he failed to come on in a disappointing effort. Better luck this time around and a win wouldn’t entirely shock.
Race 9. (17:46) Furphy (bm64) 1200m
The best version of 5 Done By Me (Bet Now:Β $7.50) can certainly take this out. Phillip Stokes trained mare who is four weeks between runs since racing at Murray Bridge where she was hard in the market but did too much work to get on speed and tired late. Good record at Morphettville and can easily bounce back.
12 All In War (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is on the seven day back up after racing over 1050m here last Saturday. Wasn’t the best of rides from Vorster but overall, thought she had her chance to win when a close up third to Soul Obsession. She’ll take good improvement from that run and think 1200m will be okay for her.
13 Lady Pavli Chenko (Bet Now:Β $8.50) has been excellent in two runs back from a spell for the Shane Oxlade team. Latest run came three weeks ago at Murray Bridge when near the speed and battling away well when third to the unbeaten Pindaric. Has had a tick over trial to keep her fitness levels up and is a third up winner.
