Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:22) Cory Johnston Staff Handicap (75) 2220m
1 Impavido…(Bet Now: $2.55 FAT ODDS) gee he’s impossible to trust. But have to put him on top. Ran over 2000m here last Saturday and a combo of class and a 12/10 from Jeff Lloyd got him home. He fell in but he did do midrace work and was there to be beaten but found late when challenged. Was three weeks between runs so hopefully there is upside to come.
6 Monaco Snob (Bet Now: $2.95 FAT ODDS) is the form horse leading into this race. Just has to get around Doomben well enough. His best efforts recently have come at the Sunny Coast, where he has won his past two, bolting up, albeit against fields which are weaker than what he faces here. But the tick for him is that a hard 2200m will be no issue.
3 Fairlighting (Bet Now: $9.00 FAT ODDS) is racing in near career best form for Toby Edmonds. This mare comes to town off the back of a narrow but strong win in the Lismore Cup last time, aided by a beaut steer from Ryan Maloney. The wet track is a big tick for her, but the negative is the weight. Can she carry 57kg? Market will tell you how she’s going.
Race 2. (12:57) Cory Johnston 50th Anniversary Plate 1050m
1 Guntantes (Bet Now: $1.85 FAT ODDS) looks the way to go here. Son of Rothesay for Rob Heathcoate who is bred to be a handy one with the mum producing a stack of winners, including a couple as a juvenile. Under pressure in the trial, but he dashed right away and ran the fastest time of the morning for the babies. Looks the one to beat.
The race really falls away now, but perhaps 6 Soldati (Bet Now: $7.00 FAT ODDS) is next best. Better Than Ready colt on debut for Chris Waller who has had a couple of trials leading up to the first start, the latest coming here behind Ready To Party where he looked okay, but clearly not as impressive as Guntantes. Runs well regardless.
8 The Odyssey (Bet Now: $11.00 FAT ODDS) is a Better Than Ready filly for Kelly Schweida who has had just one trial under the belt, which came in the trial mentioned above won by Ready To Party. Was somewhat placed under pressure but responded well enough to my eye. Not sure she can beat Guntantes, but should run okay.
Race 3. (13:32) Three: Doug & Joan Plate 1050m
6 Country Cocktail (Bet Now: $2.15 FAT ODDS) is a stablemate of Niedorp who has also looked sharp at the trials. She’s just had the one, which came on the same morning as Niedorp. She won by four lengths but the time was a few lengths slower than the time Niedorp. Should ping over from the wide gate and be on speed, but likely gives the ideal drag over for Niedorp.
1 Courseshewill (Bet Now: $4.75 FAT ODDS) is a Liam Birchley trained filly who was hard in the market when debuting in the Pat O’Shea at Toowoomba and despite doing a bit wrong, she proved far too good for them. There is nothing quite like race experience, and that should hold her in good stead here. Definite threat.
3 Buckets Of Pride (Bet Now: $15.00 FAT ODDS) is a daughter of Tycoon Ruler for Chris Munce. She led throughout to win her trial in rather slow time, and was pushed out, but despite being pushed out, she responded, which is a good sign for an unraced juvenile. Needs to improve big time off that but could easily do under race day pressure.
Race 4. (14:12) Trevor & Trudy Plate (Class 3) 1350m
Hard to ignore a winner so I’ll side with 9 Lulu Express (Bet Now: $5.75 FAT ODDS) for the Toby Edmonds team. Resumed with a narrow second to Hidden Rose on a bog at the Gold Coast before going to this track/distance at the midweeks and she bolted in. Was a few weeks between runs that day, so she should come right on from that and prove tough to beat.
1 Mr Bellagio (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) looks to be going well this prep for Liam Birchley but just needs luck. He didn’t get it three weeks back at this track/distance when wide no cover but stuck on well in defeat behind Stella Victoria, who franked the form by bolting up last Saturday. He’s racing well. Just needs better luck.
6 Bullet Shot (Bet Now: $9.50 FAT ODDS) is a Matty Dunn trained son of Redoute’s Choice who had trialled up really well prior to resuming over the 1350m at Ipswich where he didn’t really look entirely happy around the tight circuit but his class came to the fore late and he proved much too good. Query being he might want further, but there is a touch of class/quality about him.
Race 5. (14:52) Peter & Kerry Handicap 1350m
I think only bad luck will see 3 Niccanova (Bet Now: $2.35) get beat here. Jury was out after a couple of below par efforts to start the prep. Steve Tregea then gave the horse a couple of months off and he was much better last time over 1200m here when beaten narrowly by Tversky. Fitter, up to 1350m, back in depth, he looks extremely hard to beat.
I want to give 7 Old Habits (Bet Now: $11.00) another look. Really liked his resumption at the Sunny Coast behind Tversky before going to the 1350m here where he didn’t get much luck in the straight behind Nothing Box. Query is he might want further now, but he is a third up winner and can win if the breaks go his way.
5 Dream Finnish (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Michael Nolan trained mare who comes through the Tversky race here from three weeks ago. She resumed in that race without a public trial but I liked the way she closed off late in the piece when beaten three lengths. Has an outstanding second up record and the extra 150m is ideal.
Race 6. (15:32) CJA Produce Division Handicap 1050m
Bludger of a sprint race, but I can’t see why 1 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $4.40) can’t repeat the dose from last start. Ran over 1000m at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks back where she sat off the speed, minded her own business, before she presented wider and let down strongly late to grab them, with the blinkers really doing the track. She’s got upside to come so happy to be with her.
3 Prompt Return (Bet Now: $4.60) can certainly win this. He was wide no cover when racing in the Volkhoff race at the Sunny Coast and to be beaten under a length given the work he did was a big tick for mine. He’s probably better suited on the bigger tracks but he can run well at Doomben. Hopefully that last start hasn’t busted him.
5 Hard Stride (Bet Now: $23.00) is a veteran for Tony Sears and to be fair, his best and probably winning days are behind him, but he can bob up and run a decent race every now and then. Forget his effort behind Volkhoff last time. He was part of that speed battle and that just isn’t his go. If he can get a more economical run, he can bounce back.
Race 7. (16:12) CJA Meat Steaks Handicap 1200m
You just have to love 1 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $2.70) don’t you. Les Ross trains this three year old, who has won his past two and has showed really good grit at his past couple, the latest when winning over 1000m at the Sunny Coast, with the win having merit after coming back 200m in trip. Back up to the six furlongs, he’s likeable.
9 Keirabella (Bet Now: $4.40) is a daughter of More Than Ready for Matty Dunn who was backed off the map when resuming in a Lismore maiden and though she didn’t take on much, she absolutely bolted in, leading all the way. Time was quite sharp too and in her two previous preps, she did show city class talent. Hopefully she can go on with it.
2 She’s Choosie (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Greg Kilner trained filly who is an absolute beauty. Very tough and consistent. Bounced back to winning form last time at Grafton when proving too good against the older horses. Looks to get a good run near the speed and any rain won’t hurt her chances, plus Harrison jumps back on.
Race 8. (16:52) CJA International Division Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Happy to give the Tony Gollan trained 8 Prue’s Angel (Bet Now: $5.50) another look in a tough race. She ran over 1200m here four weeks ago and was given a peach by Stewart but just found Tawfiq Boy too good. Just not quite seeing out the trip but I think if she can a cold sit just off the speed and be cuddled for the straight, she’ll be effective.
Keen to see 1 Mogador (Bet Now: $9.50) for the Heinrich/Rogers team. He trialled up well prior to resuming at the Sunny Coast a fortnight ago where he ran well nearer the inside late but was no match for the low flying From Within. Not the greatest of second up records but this is a very winnable race if he has any natural improvement from the resumption.
The little bit of give in the track should help 10 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $31.00) . Matt Kropp trains this mare, who ran over 1200m on her home track at Toowoomba last time where she got back off speed but peeled wide and let down strongly, just missing out on picking up Isis Magic. Wet track looks ideal, senior jock on and should get a suck run off pace.
Race 9. (17:32) CJA Queensland 1968 Handicap (85) 1640m
He can be hit and miss but 10 Stanley (Bet Now: $8.50) did good things for me when he won first up at the Gold Coast so I’ll back him in. I thought it was a beaut training effort by Michael Costa to get him to win fresh given 1300m is clearly short of his best trip and he only had the one trial leading in, yet still surged and finished best. Should come right on from that, extra trip a tick and is a second up winner.
Now that 6 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $4.60) has won a race, he could easily go on with it now. He ran over the Sunny Coast mile a fortnight ago and I thought it was a lovely steer from McGillivray that got him home. Got a good sit just off the speed and once he got clear air, he surged and just finished best. Just needs to repeat that effort to go close here.
1 Jaminzah (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who had his first run in Queensland at this track/distance three weeks ago where he got well off the pace but worked home quite well late I thought behind Prioritise, who is one of the form gallopers in Brisbane at the moment. Should improve off that and is a definite threat.
