Sydney racing this Saturday is at Randwick for a nine race card, transferred from Randwick due to the forecast for extreme heat. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:40) ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (76) 1400m
1 Barbeque (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a nice type for James Cummings. He resumed on Magic Millions Day at Wyong where he was a drifter in the market but nobody told the horse that as he came with a well timed run out wide under hard riding from Avdulla to get the win. Looks to have plenty of scope and he doesn’t mind digging in when he needs to.
3 Scream Park (Bet Now: $3.10) is a very promising colt for the Chris Waller camp who is potentially heading towards Karaka Million 3YO Classic on January 27 so it’ll be very interesting to see what he does here. Did the job well enough last time at Warwick Farm, but to be fair, he only beat two rivals and they aren’t much good compared to what he’s facing here, plus the mile back to 1400m knowing that his GF is at the mile. He’s a very good horse, but too many negatives to put him on top.
5 Island Missile (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Team Snowden trained gelding who resumed in the Intuition race at Randwick on Boxing Day. He attempted to lead most of the way under Koby Jennings and he tried very hard but just ran out of puff late and had to settle for fourth. Has the run under the belt now and maps super.
Race 2. (13:20) TAB Handicap 1200m
10 Futooh (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Sebring filly for the Hayes/Dabernig team who had the one soft 900m trial at Rosehill before debuting at Warwick Farm where she had to make a long run from the back and loomed large to win but just ran out of puff the final 100m. That run should bring her right on and always respect the stable.
9 Eawase (Bet Now: $9.00) is a nice looking filly for the Snowden camp who debuted under the lights at Canterbury where she ran a real bottler I thought when second to the above average Sweet Ava. That girl is one of the better types we’ve seen this season, so that form should read well for this assignment.
4 Comissioner (Bet Now: $8.00) needs to win this if indeed he is heading towards the Magic Millions. Debuted in the Phelan Ready and was completely outclassed by Ef Troop before racing over 1000m here on Boxing Day and sticking on okay without threatening when fourth to Into The Abyss. He’s got the hard race experience under the belt now and I like him up to 1200m.
Race 3. (13:55) #theraces Sprint (79) 1200m
8 Tswalu (Bet Now: $4.40) is a David Pfieffer trained mare who is putting together a really good record. Trialled up well prior to resuming at Wyong where she didn’t look 100% happy around the tight track but once she balanced up she really lengthened nicely and savaged the line to get the win. Has upside and a touch of quality about her.
5 Gretna (Bet Now: $6.00) is the interesting runner. Chris Waller trained mare who can be hit and miss at times. She had a three run Winter prep, which ended in Doomben behind Final Zero. She has had two sharp trials in Queensland to prepare for her return but resumes in Sydney so she has clearly shown something to suggest she can measure up again in Sydney.
1 Fortensky (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality animal that resumes for Chris Waller. He was a very consistent galloper during the Winter/Spring, albeit over further than this. In saying that, he can sprint well fresh and he has been given two trials to prepare, both of which were run in fast time. Definitely one to watch.
Race 4. (14:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1300m
Very keen on 7 Runway Ready (Bet Now: $4.20). She is a really good mare for the Matty Dunn team who has returned in fab order. Didn’t appear to handle Ballina that well fresh but was still excellent late before going to Ipswich where she was backed off the map and duly saluted under a peach from lloyd. Loses nothing with Angland steering, draws well and is a three time winner, so she gets in very well at the weights.
2 Awesome Pluck (Bet Now: $1.60) looks a definite threat. Jenny Graham trains this three year old who drops back to the Highway grade after resuming in a 3YO race at Randwick where he was heavily backed but I don’t think that leading is his go and he ran a disappointing third. Trial beside Victorem was just fair but he can be like that. Think he’ll be much better with a bunny to chase.
9 Gripped (Bet Now: $9.50) is the very interesting runner. Wayne Wilkes trains this lightly raced gelding from Taree. Has only had the three outings, resuming at Coffs Harbour where he was well backed and led all the way under Chloe Baker for a determined win. Gets in very well at the weights and maps to either lead or comfortably sit outside Fermanagh Lad.
Race 5. (15:05) Youth Inseach Inspire Mile (85) 1600m
See no reason to jump off 3 Cellarman (Bet Now: $2.45). Was keen on him at Warwick Farm a fortnight back and despite giving them a bit of a start on the turn, he always did look as if he’d pick them up and he did, pulling clear late for a good win. Meets a similar field here and appears to map the same. Happy to be in his corner.
2 Caerless Choice (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Redoute’s Choice gelding for Paul Messara and Arrowfield who scored a brilliant win in the Muswellbrook Cup two back before racing in the Cellarman race at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago. Adkins just had to go early given the tempo was slow and that allowed Cellarman to stalk and have last say. I think if he gets the drag up, he can go close.
Look for an improved showing from 6 More Energy (Bet Now: $61.00). He resumed over 1400m at Warwick Farm two weeks ago and really had no hope to run on given the tempo of the race but I liked the way he did finish off though beaten a long way. Up to the mile is a big tick, stable flying, has more upside than most and will be strong late.
Race 6. (15:40) Spinalcure Racing4Research Sprint (85) 1000m
1 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $3.10) gets the nod for me in a pretty tricky dash. Kris Lees trains this galloper who has promised so much but being a colt, he didn’t put in. He had the gelding operation and resumed in the feature sprint on Muswellbrook Cup Day back on December 8 and I thought he was fabulous in lumping 60.5kg to victory. Won his lone start here and I like the break between runs, keeping him fresh.
8 My Maher (Bet Now: $4.80) is a really good mare that resumes for the Matty Smith team. This mare kicked off her career with four sharp wins before racing on the Beaumont track at Newcastle where she ran a narrow second to Banuelo. This girl has had the benefit of a couple of sharp trials and while she lacks the class of some of these, she makes up for it with brilliance.
10 Loverboy Charlie (Bet Now: $12.00) is a bludger but he is the very interesting runner here. This bloke hasn’t raced since July 12 at Canterbury when finishing down the track behind the above average sprinter Star Crossed. Has been given a couple of sharp trials to prepare for his return and the speed engaged will really suit him.
Race 7. (16:20) 2018 ATC Membership Handicap (80) 1400m
7 Tennessee Hussy (Bet Now: $11.00) is worth a ticket each way for mine. She attempted to lead all the way over the 1550m at Canterbury last time out and to her credit she gave a good kick but was outgunned late by Jaunty, who franked the form with an eye catching effort on New Years Day at Randwick. Back to 1400m she looks the leader and will give a great sight.
6 Mollyfield (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Gerald Ryan trained mare who is going really well at the moment. She comes through the Jaunty race at Canterbury where she sat outside Tennessee Hussy throughout and eventually wore that mare down but just couldn’t quite see it out and had to settle for third. She will love the drop back to the seven furlongs.
4 Siren’s Fury (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the knockout chance. This Jason Coyle mare ran over the 1400m at Randwick last time out and worked to the line strongly late when third to Uptown Lad, beaten just under a length. She can be a bit hit and miss at times, but if she’s on, she’s certainly up to beating these.
Race 8. (17:00) Tab.com.au Handicap (94) 1400m
Hard to ignore a mare that is low flying and that is exactly what 5 Noire (Bet Now: $2.00) is at the moment. She ran at Warwick Farm a fortnight back where she did open fav but the money came big time for Pecans. Nobody told her that as she finished best to beat Pecans, who came out and won the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford, so that reads very well for this.
8 Lanciato (Bet Now: $4.40) is four weeks between runs for the Mark Newnham yard since resuming over 1200m at Rosehill where he was a real eye catcher, warming to the task late nearer the inside when third to Drachenfels. Unbeaten second up and he does appear to have a stack of upside. Definite chance for sure.
1 Coolring (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Bjorn Baker trained seven year who drops a fair bit in depth after racing at Warwick Farm two weeks ago. Just went a touch keen in front and stayed nearer the inside section, which wasn’t the spot to be, when fourth to Nancy. If he can get a soft time of it on speed and relax, he’ll take some beating.
Race 9. (17:40) ATC Handicap (80) 1400m
Going for a bit of value here in 5 Sir Barb (Bet Now: $26.00). The in form Clare Cunningham trains this galloper, who resumed over 1200m at Warwick Farm a fortnight back. Was unwanted in betting but I liked the way he closed his race off late in the piece behind Wild ‘N’ Famous. He’ll be much better suited over the 1400m, he is a second up winner and I think the big track will suit.
4 Pipeline (Bet Now: $5.50) was hard in the market when racing at Warwick Farm two weeks ago but those who were on did their money after 200-300m because he bungled the start, he was back near last on the rail and they were crawling in front. Had no hope in what was a total forgive. Clean jump, he maps super and should take some beating.
10 Sharpe Hussler (Bet Now: $20.00) is another that can add value to exotics. Thought he did a really good job here on Boxing Day behind Bye See. Was wide most of the way and had to carry top weight despite bringing non city form. Gets really good weight relief here and if he can get cover and a drag into the race, he’ll be a threat for sure.
