Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday with good depth right across the board once again. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:27) Furnaces @ Aquis Farm Handicap 1615m
4 Real Princess (Bet Now: $3.60) looks the obvious for mine. Liam Birchley trained filly who was excellent here two back behind Ilovevegas before racing at this track/distance where she was nabbed right on the peg by a beauty in Snapchat Girl. Less depth here and has the mile run under the belt. Safe bet.
3 Lady Lark (Bet Now: $6.50) found some kind of positive form over 1400m last Sunday at the Sunny Coast against the older horses where she sat off the speed and tried hard but was no match for Flamin’ Mogul. On talent, she’s the best horse in the race. Does talent get her home first look at the mile? We shall see.
8 Reef Knot (Bet Now: $13.00) was good here two back over 1350m behind Diomedes before stepping back to 1200m at Ballina where she sat on speed, perhaps not her ideal racing pattern, and toughed it out strongly behind On A High. I think with a cold ride, she’ll get the mile, and overall, this race is lacking depth.
Race 2. (12:02) Tim Bell Memorial Handicap (80) 2200m
2 Loving Home (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who is knocking on the door to win a race and I think he gets his chance here. He comes through a similar race here a fortnight back where Jim Byrne gave him every chance but he wanted to duck and that probably cost him getting past Stanley. He can go one better.
6 Stanley (Bet Now: $3.30) was an okay winner at the provincials before stepping up to this grade two weeks ago and he was sensationally backed at odds to win the race. The punters got it spot on as he toughed it out and kicked hard to fend off Loving Home. Can he repeat the dose? Yes, but you may not get a decent price.
8 Qabla (Bet Now: $35.00) will appreciate the severe drop in grade/depth after contesting the Queensland Cup at the Sunny Coast last time out. The two miles and sharp class rise was a bit much for him behind Araldo Junior. Form prior was okay and on those efforts, he can run in the money here for sure.
Race 3. (12:37) Queensland Breeders Handicap (Class 6) 1615m
5 Skillful (Bet Now: $5.00) appears to be loving life in the sunshine state under David Vandyke. He ran over this track/distance at the midweeks where he was confidently backed late and aided by a lovely ride from Damien Browne, he got the horse into the clear at the right and finished best to score. Has the upside and will be better off for the run.
3 Comacina (Bet Now: $4.80) is on the seven day back up for the Meagher camp after racing over 1350m here last Saturday in an open handicap where he was far from disgraced I thought in a strong race behind Oxford Poet. Drops a fair bit in depth here, getting fitter, well weighted and draws nicely.
2 Queen Of Wands (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented mare for Team Guy who had been going okay in town but needed a confidence boost. She certainly got that at the Sunny Coast last time out, producing a brilliant finishing burst from the back to nab them in the last couple of strides. Now she has that confidence boost, she can go on with it.
Race 4. (13:12) Stanton Mienert Accountants Handicap (75) 1350m
The stable have kept the powder dry in regards to 5 Fabvier (Bet Now: $5.50) and racing in town, but they find the right race here. She was over a month between runs last Wednesday at Ipswich and though the win was narrow, it was impressive given that break and fresh at 1350m is never easy. Should improve big time and is one of the hardest to beat.
2 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $2.60) is a talented mare for the Kris Lees camp who finds a very winnable race. She is a tick over three weeks between runs since racing at Canterbury where she sat just off the pace under Rachel King and tried hard but had to settle for a narrow second to Reward For Fashion. Stable should always be respected when they come north.
6 Shoreline (Bet Now: $8.00) was given a little freshen up prior to racing in the Mothers Gift at Grafton during their Carnival and the punters knew what they were doing, backing the local mare into $5 from $9 and she bolted up in leading all the way. Harder here, but I think she maps well and is in ripping form.
Race 5. (13:47) Jockey Celebration Day Handicap 1615m
Hard to trust, but I’ll give 2 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $2.90) another look here. Talented mare for Tony Gollan who was backed off the map in the Tatts Mile last time out here and she just overdid it a touch on speed, dropping out to run fifth to Crack Me Up. Looks to be the leader here, and provided she doesn’t go too hard, she’s the one to beat.
5 Pindan Pearl (Bet Now: $2.70) appreciated that strong tempo in the Tatts Mile a fortnight back and loomed to win the race but just had no answers for the talented up and comer Crack Me Up. Been a fair while since she has greeted the judge but gee she gets a great chance here in a thin race.
4 Alpha Beat (Bet Now: $18.00) could be the knockout runner here at odds. He trialled up well at the Sunny Coast prior to resuming there over 1400m where he was in a tricky spot and couldn’t really come on behind Aomen. He is much better than that. Another that hasn’t won for ages, but has enormous upside and made up good ground second up last time in.
Race 6. (14:22) LUCRF Supports Jockeys Trust Handicap (70) 1615m
7 Brocson (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Michael Lakey trained gelding who is in ripping form at the moment. Ran well at this track/distance two back behind the above average Sbeaky Glance before going to the Ipswich mile where he was dominant there under Brad Stewart in a race where I think the form will hold up. Has earned a crack at this kind of race.
15 Gypsy Miss (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a key threat. She sat wide throughout last Saturday at this track/distance and really lost all hope there but I thought she stuck to the task really in defeat behind Meet And Greet, who was heavily backed. Start prior behind Pinolino reads very well for this kind of race.
16 Mobile (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Barry Lockwood trained four year old who has run well in town before and can find here and win. He comes through a race at Beaudesert last start where he got off the pace under Ric McMahon and couldn’t come on well enough in a below par effort. He is better than that, so give him another look.
Race 7. (15:02) UBET Handicap (75) 1350m
4 Mishani Sleuth (Bet Now: $2.30) is a quality four year old for the Chris Anderson camp who comes through the 2YO/3YO Plate last Saturday where he was no match for Prioritise but gee his last 200m was outstanding given where he was. The rise to 1350m is perfect and I like that he is backing up.
3 Patronizing (Bet Now: $8.50) looks silly overs at $26. He was backed hard late at Coffs Harbour last time out but I think the young rider just made the slight error of waiting to get going. This horse needs to wind into his work and when he did, which was the final 150m, it was very good. Could be the forgotten horse.
Not sure he can win, but dear me 8 Prince Manitou (Bet Now: $27.00) looks silly overs at $26. He was backed hard late at Coffs Harbour last time out but I think the young rider just made the slight error of waiting to get going. This horse needs to wind into his work and when he did, which was the final 150m, it was very good. Could be the forgotten horse.
Race 8. (15:42) National Jockeys Trust Plate (Class 3) 1200m
1 Havasay (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Liam Birchley trained galloper that had really confident market support when resuming during the Grafton Carnival and the punters got it spot on as he came with a well timed to run to get the job done and continue the great association Birchley has with the track/carnival. He can go on with it here.
7 Ignite The Light (Bet Now: $4.20) is the obvious threat, especially with the field depleted by scratchings. He resumed over 1200m at Ipswich and absolutely spanked, winning by seven lengths and running great time. Rail out on a firm Doomben surface means leaders will be advantaged, and this bloke will lead comfortably.
2 Impregnable (Bet Now: $14.00) is a progressive gelding for the Toby Edmonds who came with a well timed run to win fresh at Grafton before going to Ballina in what was a strong Class 2 event and he eventually wore them down to get the win and ran good time for the afternoon. Ready for the city now and I’m confident he can measure up.
Race 9. (16:22) Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Handicap 1200m
7 Tumbler (Bet Now: $2.90) picks herself here I feel. Quality mare for the Barry Lockwood camp who is on trial for a trip to Sydney for some blacktype so this will be a good test. Resumed on her home track at the Sunny Coast and looked in a spot of bother to get there but her class got her home for the win. Should come on from that and up to 1200m is perfect.
10 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $6.00) is a tough galloper for the Kelly Schweida camp who had really confident market support when racing at the 1200m of the Sunny Coast three weeks back and Jeff Lloyd didn’t let his supporters down with a tough on speed win. Maps very nicely here and likes Doomben.
8 L’Entrecote (Bet Now: $11.00) is a knockout chance at odds for mine. Resumes for Kelly Schweida and is a talented type when at his best, certainly up to these. Been quite taken by his two trials leading in. On the form guide, they don’t stand out, but the replays do. Might need a touch further, but at the price, I’m happy to include him.
