Eight races will be run and won at Belmont on Saturday, and while there are no feature races, the depth looks okay for the program. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:18) Tabtouch Maiden 1200m
A maiden on a Saturday metro program…lovely. Still, a winner to be found, and I think it is 7 Lighthouse Rock (Bet Now: $5.50). Brett Pope trained gelding who has had two career outings, both down the straight at Pinjarra. Both times he has got back in the ruck, with cover and launched late to place both times. 1200m suits and Pateman is riding in fab form at the moment.
4 Tow Rope (Bet Now: $3.50) attempted to lead all the way here at this track/distance last Wednesday on a very heavy track and that probably just saw him out when feeling the pinch late behind Oliver’s Travels. Maps superbly here from the gate and firmer footing a big tick for this four year old.
5 Triple Event (Bet Now: $17.00) was somewhat unwanted in betting when racing over the Pinjarra 1200m last Thursday but gee I thought his run was full of merit, closing off with real purpose from the back to run an eye catching second. Fast run 1200m here looks to be ideal and he draws to sit much closer in transit.
Race 2. (14:58) Gabby Mallis 91st Birthday Plate 1200m
4 Rebellionaire (Bet Now: $5.00) gets the nod for me. Three year old on debut for the Mcaullife team who has looked the part in several trials in readiness for his debut, the latest coming on June 16 at Lark Hill when placing behind the talented Danes Maree. Little break since, draws well and Pike steers. A good lead.
11 Threads Of Ivy (Bet Now: $41.00) is an Econsul filly having her first day at the races, this one trained by Vaughn Sigley. Trialled up in April and did nothing. Was tipped out soon after and came back in work. Trialled on Monday at Lark Hill and went good to the eye. I like that they are backing her up to debut within a week of the trial.
5 Tango Ora (Bet Now: $61.00) is another first starter here, this one for the Roy Rogers stable at Albany. He has had three career trials, two in the Summer before being tipped out. Trialled on July 17 and went very nicely to the eye at Lark Hill. Stable doesn’t mind a bet either, so I’d watch the market.
Race 3. (15:38) Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (1MW) 1000m
2 Snow Lord (Bet Now: $2.35) clearly on top for me here. Team Williams trained four year old who resumed here a fortnight back where the market said he’d go close and he did, only beaten off late by the race fit Patapus. Meets that horse 2kg better off here and has the more upside. Ticks the boxes.
Take nothing away from the win of 3 Patapus (Bet Now: $4.40). He was given a sweet ride by McGruddy in that race mentioned above. Suck run off the pace, waited, then shoved into the clear and pounced at the right time to win. Probably needs a similar to retain a margin over Snow Lord but he does have the win on the board.
8 Just A Fluke (Bet Now: $6.50) is a lightly raced five year old resuming for the Jason Pateman yard. This gelding raced twice during the Autumn, winning fresh at Pinjarra before finishing down the track in town behind Snow Lord, who he meets 4kg better off for an eight length margin. Resumes with no trials, whereas his previous two fresh runs, he has trialled.
Race 4. (16:18) Kirin Megumi Handicap (1MW) 1300m
6 Cash On Call (Bet Now: $2.80) looks one of the better bets on the program for mine. Team Williams gelding who resumed at this track/distance last Wednesday on a bog where Pike gave him a sweet ride just off the pace before getting into the clear and going through his gears to be quite dominant late. Harder here, but so much upside and is clearly above average.
Forgive a horse for a bad run and that is what you should do with 2 Enchanted Dream (Bet Now: $5.50). Market flucs ($3.50-$6) said she’d run a howler fresh and that is what she did behind A Knight Of Pro, a race which has already seen two subsequent winners. She is the Magic Millions winner, so surely she is better than that.
11 Sunset Pete (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Darren Mcaullife trained galloper who surprised many with his win here a tick under five weeks back over 1400m, charging home along the cutaway to get the job done at nearly $101. He does go okay on firm, but clearly is better with give. Still, have to respect a horse fresh off that winning effort.
Race 5. (16:58) Devil's Lair Handicap (78+) 1400m
5 Just Magical (Bet Now: $7.50) is a former Victorian who has had a couple of runs in WA for the Michael Lane camp and looks ready to win now for mine. Led comfortably here two weeks back and kicked hard, but just ran out of condition late. Either leads or box seats. Whatever scenario, she’s the safe way to go for me.
4 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $4.40) is a very consistent six year old that resumes for the Colin Webster yard. He was a ripper in the Summer/Autumn, constantly racing and always picking up prizemoney for connections. Trial was outstanding I thought and he can sprint well fresh. Definitely watch the market.
3 Flying Time (Bet Now: $5.00) is a rejuvenated eight year old for the Lindsey Smith who clearly rates highly here off his Bolton Sprint effort last Saturday where he got back with cover before launching late and just missing out on picking up Profit Street. Drops miles in grade here, hard fit and in ripping form.
Race 6. (17:35) Amelia Park Beef Handicap (72+) 1600m
1 Astronomite (Bet Now: $3.90) is a former Team Williams galloper that had his first run under Martin Allan here a fortnight back and it immediately got a spark back in form as he toughed it out strongly late and was powerful to the line in getting a win for the new stable. He is hard to trust, the horse that is, but I’ll back him in here in a thin race.
5 Showy Chloe (Bet Now: $3.10) is on the quick back up for the Jason Pateman camp after racing here last Saturday where she bounced back to some good with a closing third to Kensington Abbey. That run was good enough for Pike to get the call up, and I love she is on the quick turnaround. Big threat.
6 Woodsville (Bet Now: $11.00) ran over this track/distance a fortnight back in the race won by Astronomite mentioned above. Just did a bit of work from the wide to get up near the speed I felt but his effort in defeat was still sound. Draws much better here and I think ridden with cover, he can be more effective.
Race 7. (18:10) 2017 Ascot Carnival Book Now Handicap (72+) 1200m
2 Just Act Natural (Bet Now: $4.00) is a very talented sprinter that resumes for the Paul Roberts yard. He is a speed demon who only knows one way to race and that is hard on speed. Only a 77 day break between runs, so residual fitness will be there, gets the claim, draws well…only query is first look Belmont.
If they do go silly in front, 6 Universal Law (Bet Now: $3.80) is your swooper. High quality animal resuming for Adam Durrant after formerly being with Team Williams. On his best form, he’s blacktype quality, but he just hasn’t quite reached that level on a consistent basis. This could be the prep where he does it.
10 Lockroy (Bet Now: $7.00) drops a fair bit in class after contesting the Beaufine here three weeks ago where he looked to have every chance near the speed but he wasn’t far away when third to It’s it. Just struggling a bit for consistency but he finds a very winnable race here on his best form.
Race 8. (18:45) Crown Towers Handicap (66+) 2000m
1 Luke’s Gold (Bet Now: $5.50) was four weeks between runs when racing over the mile here a fortnight back where he was a real eye catcher I thought, making up good ground nearer the inside from the back behind Astronomite. First look at the 2000m, but he gets the claim and has the quality factor.
6 Cougar Nights (Bet Now: $17.00) looks a great each way play in the get out. He comes through the Astronomite race here over the mile two weeks ago and gee his effort was really good over an unsuitable trip. Convinced he was going to be in the finish but got badly held up late and was under a hold the final furlong. Won’t get in a pocket from the draw here.
14 Scooner (Bet Now: $5.50) is becoming very hard to trust, but gee he finds a nice race here to break his WA duck. Looked all over a winner over 2200m here last time out but was nabbed near the peg by Danehills Daughter. Back to 2000m a big tick, firmer track a big tick, draws to get good cover, a drag into the race…ticks the boxes.
