The Warrnambool Carnival continues on Wednesday, headlined by the ‘Newmarket Of The Bush’, the Wangoom (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:20) Greyhound Racing Victoria Mdn 1400m
I’m with the first starter 1 Almsgiver (Bet Now: $2.40) in the opener. Son of Contributer for Beetroot Williams that is on debut and I thought his lone jumpout at Camperdown was a lovely piece of work out wide. Under a hold from Yendall, he went about his business nicely. I think he can debut with a win.
7 Cullier (Bet Now: $6.00) will put herself on speed and try hard. That was the case when she resumed over 1400m at Bendigo. Attempted to lead throughout and gave a pretty good kick from the front. Just felt the pinch late, with her condition running out. She’ll take improvement from that and is a leading contender.
5 Next Step Berrima (Bet Now: $4.50) should be suited up to 1400m for Shea Eden. Debuted over 1200m at Geelong when back off the speed and didn’t mind her finale late in the piece when third to Sun Samurai. Got less convictions than most and Jye McNeil, who rode on debut, sticks here.
Race 2. (11:50) Bottle-o Warrnambool Mdn 1700m
I’m with 11 Typhoon Moon (Bet Now: $4.20) for Daniel Bowman. She’s progressing quite nicely and the rise to the 1700m here looks ideal. Ran in a 1500m maiden at Geelong last time out and worked home strongly from the back when second to Red Santa, who I think is city class, so the form reads well, and trained on the track, you’d suspect she has been targeted for this.
9 Volatile Stock (Bet Now: $3.00) is knocking on the door to break the maiden tag. He comes back to 1700m after racing over 2000m at Cranbourne last time out where he was on speed and battled on quite well, finishing second to Hereforagoodtime. I reckon Froggy will lead on him and make this a truly run 1700m with the hard fitness under the belt.
3 Intense (Bet Now: $20.00) can sneak a first four spot. He hasn’t been too bad in three runs back from a break. Latest run came a few weeks ago over the mile at Hamilton when closing off okay without threatening. Not sure I could back him to win, but one I can entertain as a first four threat.
Race 3. (12:20) Alex Pye Electrics Mdn Plate 1700m
2 Grabowski (Bet Now: $6.50) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in from a betting perspective. He ran over 1400m at Echuca last time out. Got quite keen in the run just off the speed and while he battled on well to run third, I reckon that early burn just took away something from his finale. Hard fit now, up in trip, and in a tricky race, default to the best stable in Victoria.
3 High Ferocity (Bet Now: $2.60) is knocking on the door to break the maiden tag. Ran in a 1500m maiden at Geelong last start where he seemed to get a decent enough run in transit, tracking the speed, and presented to be dangerous. Just couldn’t quite get there when third to Red Santa. That form reads well for this.
11 Needlework (Bet Now: $8.50) should appreciate the rise to 1700m. Few weeks between runs since racing over 1500m at Mornington where she got back in the run and while she was never really a winning threat, liked the way she finished her race off. Like her up in trip and is a definite winning chance.
Race 4. (12:55) Decron Dunroe Stpl (bm120) 3450m
Don’t know what to do here. It’s a very even race. 3 Rexmont (Bet Now: $9.00) looks the safe option for the Durden camp. Led throughout at Pakenham last start over the Steeples and he was dominant in the run to the line. This race doesn’t appear much harder so only has to hold his form to be around the mark.
Giving serious respect to 7 Cheners (Bet Now: $11.00), who is racing really well this prep for Eric Musgrove, both on the flat and over the jumps. Recent efforts over the Steeples have been quite good but won on the flat last start at Geelong when saluting over 2400m. Hard to beat against these.
2 Michelin (Bet Now: $5.50) has the Patrick Payne factor, which immediately commands respect over the jumps. Ran over 2000m at Wangaratta last week in what was more or less a prep run but I didn’t mind his effort from the back. Trialled well over the jumps prior so I think he’s ready to rock and roll.
Race 5. (13:30) Sinclair Wilson (bm70) 1000m
I am looking at this race with McKeever out. Bit of a throw at the stumps, at odds hopefully, with 2 Reward With Return (Bet Now: $8.00). He’s a beauty for Nathan Hobson and with good speed engaged here, can see him sitting off it and being strong late. Resumed on his home track at Swan Hill over the 975m where he sat back off the speed and worked home strongly at the end when third to a pretty handy horse in Mr Moppett. Hopefully he gets the speed on to finish over the top.
6 Continuance (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Lindsey Smith trained filly that resumes. This filly showed good promise in WA before coming to Victoria in the Summer. No luck fresh at the Valley before a solid third at Ballarat. Spelled, has jumped out well leading and once again, stable gets Olly to steer, so watch the market.
1 A Good Yarn (Bet Now: $5.50) does his best racing when on speed so I think if he is to be a winning threat, has to be handle bars down at the start from Lane. He has been a good solid horse for a number of seasons now and has run well at Saturday metro level previously, so we know the talent is there. Interesting to see how he goes fresh.
Race 6. (14:05) Galleywood Hurdle 3200m
With due respect, this is one of the poorer editions of the Galleywood in recent memory. But, need to find a winner, and the improving forecast does swing me towards 6 Saunter Boy (Bet Now: $2.25). I thought he was very good in defeat fresh at Bendigo behind Fanciful Toff before going to Pakenham where he led throughout over the Hurdles and was dominant. He’s got upside and improvement to come, and is in the right camp.
1 Instigator (Bet Now: $4.00) is the only other key winning chance IMO. He ran at the same meeting as Saunter Boy in a different Hurdle race. He sat back in the small field before getting clear air and in a matter of strides, it was race over. He’s flying this guy and looks to be primed for a clear target race.
With a potentially drying deck, a horse like 3 Britannicus (Bet Now: $8.50) can be a threat. His best racing does come when on dry ground and the forecast is suggesting the rain will be going away come Wednesday, so the track won’t be as wet as first thought. He’ll put himself on speed and try hard.
Race 7. (14:45) Whalers Hotel (bm64) 1700m
7 Facemask (Bet Now: $3.70) hasn’t exactly been a punters friend throughout his career but I am giving another chance here in what looks a winnable race. He was a few weeks between runs when racing over the mile at Pakenham last time out. Sat back off the speed and closed strongly, just missing out on picking up Falls. I think that form does read strongly for a race like this.
It’s hard to knock the way 3 National Guard (Bet Now: $4.20) is going at the moment. Lindsey Smith trained galloper that has won two on the bounce, the latest coming on Terang Cup Day. Admittedly he did find the best part of the track, but still had to take advantage and that he did. Harder here, but he’s racing super.
Aaron Purcell has 17 Fiable (Bet Now: $13.00) racing quite well at the moment. He ran over the mile at Werribee last time where he sat off the speed before Bowditch eased him wider and he let down with a nice finale to win impressively. Proven on wet ground, trained here and will give a sight.
Race 8. (15:20) Wangoom Handicap 1200m
14 Simply Optimistic (Bet Now: $10.00) is bursting to win a race I feel. Caught the eye fresh at Bendigo behind Sam’s Image before racing at Caulfield a few weeks ago. Sat in the box seat and tried hard, but just no match for a quality mare in Missile Mantra. Third up now so he’s hard fit and remaining down in the weights, he appeals.
4 Great Again (Bet Now: $5.00) is an absolute beauty for Lindsey Smith. He puts himself into the race is so honest and rarely runs a bad race. Being first up here, no doubt it’s a target race, especially with a wet track on the cards. Draws wide, but a stack of speed drawn inside, he’ll get in I’d suggest and prove hard to beat.
Always respect the Jolly camp when they come to Victoria so including 11 Dexelation (Bet Now: $10.00) in the numbers. He ran in the Irwin at Morphettville, a lead up for the Goodwood, and he was good in defeat when third to stablemate Kemalpasa, a Group l performer, so the form is a big tick for this.
Race 9. (16:00) Idetect (bm70) 1400m
I get the feeling that punters will launch into 8 Tadashi Hamada (Bet Now: $4.60). Shea Eden trained three year old that has some very strong form lines around him, including a win over a very handy horse, Deepstrike. Just got too far back fresh at Geelong but loved the way he closed off. He’s come back super and I’m quite keen on his chances.
6 Jaffastock (Bet Now: $16.00) ran fourth in that Geelong race mentioned above that Tadashi Hamada ran second in, won by Te Ata. Jaffastock was a notable drifter late in betting and while it was proven correct, I liked the way he stuck on. He’ll take good improvement off that and should run well again.
The best version of 11 Sensationalisation (Bet Now: $14.00) is certainly capable. She has gone somewhat off the boil compared to earlier in her career where she looked above average. Resumed at Bendigo where she was a notable drifter late in betting and the market got it right as she failed to come on from off the speed. Up in trip, fitter, not entirely dismissing her.
Race 10. (16:30) Warrnambool Volkswagen (bm70) 1400m
5 Nikau Spur (Bet Now: $2.25) just looks the get out bet doesn’t he. Hasn’t really done a thing wrong in his short career to date, and there was a lot of arrogance about his first up win at Pakenham. He was just trucking throughout and once the gap came, away he went and gee he was impressive. Just has to hold that to win again I feel.
1 Corner Pocket (Bet Now: $4.80) is a very progressive galloper for Lindsey Smith. It was interesting with him at Ballarat, whether he was set for the Bool and fit enough to win fresh. Market said he was good enough to win and he duly saluted. He’ll take improvement off that and one thing with him is that he knows where the line is.
2 Vardani (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very interesting runner. Former French galloper that makes his Australian debut for Matty Williams. He showed promise when racing over there, winning his first two before a down the track effort at Listed level. Jumpouts have been somewhat inconclusive so watch the market.
