Outside Magic Millions, the biggest race day for the Gold Coast is Hollindale Stakes Day and it comes around this Saturday, with the 1800m Group ll feature highlighting a fab nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:24) Attwood Marshall Handicap (75) 1800m
I think 15 Dauphin De France (Bet Now: $3.50) can continue the picket fence here despite the class/depth rise. Past two wins have been great, both coming at this track/distance and each time he has been dominant. Beat a subsequent city winner two back in Le Dude before beating a city performed horse in Lets Get Nauti Gal. Harder here obviously but hard to knock the way he is going.
5 Double Superlative (Bet Now: $5.50) looks a key threat. He is back to his best form for Kelly Schweida, winning his past two starts, the latest coming last Friday night over this trip at the Sunny Coast. He was there to be run down 300m out but when Orman got fair dinkum, he kicked hard and on the line held them comfortably. Has to go in the numbers.
Look for an improved run from 13 Shield Wall (Bet Now: $12.00). She ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago and her effort was very good I thought considering she got a mile back of them in the run, giving away an impossible start, but her last 200m was excellent. If they go hard in front, she will be strong late and have last say.
Race 2. (11:59) David Russo Fresh Vegetables Sydney Markets Handicap (85) 1200m
Will be very interesting to see how 8 Tyzone (Bet Now: $6.00) goes now he is with Toby Edmonds. He was a star in North Queensland, simply being too good for them. He’s got the makings of a Saturday class horse, which is why the connections elected to send him to Edmonds, and his trial win here recently was outstanding. I think he can get the job done.
4 Mr Marbellouz (Bet Now: $1.65) is the boom horse on the radar. Won a string races on the bounce before that run came to an end a fortnight back at Doomben on a bog at the hands of River Racer. He lost, but lost no admirers I wouldn’t have thought. Much better suited on firmer footing and he’ll give a sight as he always does.
3 Sony Legend (Bet Now: $15.00) should be suited up to 1200m. He ran over the 1000m at the Sunny Coast three weeks back where he got a mile back off them but worked home with real purpose I thought in an eye catching effort behind Ringo’s A Rockstar. 1200m looks his go and with a fast tempo, he’ll get his chance.
Race 3. (12:34) Hawkes Racing Plate (Class 6) 1400m
I think a great each way bet here is 14 Zamex (Bet Now: $13.00) for Matty Dunn. He didn’t look entirely happy on the bog track first up at Doomben but still made up good ground in the straight behind dominant winner River Racer. Big tracks and firm footing are the ticks for this horse and he gets them both here, plus a hot speed, so he’ll do me.
3 Fortensky (Bet Now: $4.50) is a beauty for Chris Waller. Been up forever it seems like but continues to race really well. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since racing at the Sunny Coast where he was close up behind Mishani Honcho. Yet to race on his home track but he finds a lovely race for his Gold Coast debut.
10 Sheza Lily (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented daughter of Zoffany that is first up for the Les Kelly yard. This girl was one of the real finds during the Spring/Summer, winning a stack of races, mainly here, but did place behind Singing at Doomben. Tends to save her best for here and her recent trial win was very good.
Race 4. (13:09) Gold Coast Cup 1400m
Bludger of a race, so I’ll with a local in 8 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $5.50). Good win two back over the 1350m at Doomben before going to the Tails Stakes where he got a mile back off them but worked home with real purpose I thought behind With A Promise. Back in trip nothing new for this horse, and he saves his best for the home track.
2 Moher (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the big improver. James Cummings trains this gelding, who resumed a fortnight back over 1400m at Randwick where he was up near the speed and ran out of condition late behind Tribal Wisdom. Generally saves his best for the Rosehill 1500m, but he looks to map ideally here and can pull out a decent second up run.
7 Ruettiger (Bet Now: $9.00) looks to map superbly here. Okay resumption behind stablemate Amanaat in the Weetwood before going to the Ascot Handicap where he failed to let down on the bog. Much better suited on top of the ground and draws to park off a hot speed, either leaders back or three back. Either way, it’s an ideal set up.
Race 5. (13:49) Ken Russell Memorial Classic 1200m
Now he’s had the run under the belt, 2 Blue Book (Bet Now: $4.50) can bounce back into the winners list. Market said he only had three legs when resuming three weeks back at the Sunny Coast and while he didn’t win, losing his unbeaten streak, he was far from disgraced when third to Mishani Hustler, who won last Saturday to frank the form. 1200m, home track, good gate, Lloyd back on. He’ll do me.
3 Lean Mean Machine (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Chris Waller trained colt, who debuted with an outstanding win at Warwick Farm before going to the Kindergarten during the Championships where he was heavily backed but the slow tempo was clearly against him behind Paquirri. Freshened up and trialled enormous last week at Canterbury.
Really like 5 Sesar (Bet Now: $12.00) as a horse. Sebring colt for Steve O’Dea who has bumped into Mishani Hustler at his two career outings, the latest coming three weeks back at the Sunny Coast when beaten 0.3L after getting well back in the run. He can sit much closer from the good draw and looks a leading chance.
Race 6. (14:29) Bat Out Of Hell 900m
Pretty keen on 5 Guard of Honour (Bet Now: $2.15). Kris Lees trains this bloke, who looks to have turned the corner after being once upon a time a milk drinker. Bolted up in the Camarena on Black Opal Day before going to the Sunny Coast where he found one stronger in Ringo’s A Rockstar. Back to a fast run 900m, I think he can be quite explosive.
4 Prompt Return (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute speed demon that resumes for Toby Edmonds. Heavily backed to win this race last year when produced freh up and looks primed to do something similar. Hasn’t raced for 11 months but gee he looked to trial up sensationally here a couple of weeks back in fast time relative to the morning. He’ll be near the lead and looking the winner.
You always have to respect any runner Richard Freedman saddles up and that is the case again with 9 Latin Boy (Bet Now: $8.50). He hasn’t raced since doing far too much work in the Maurice McCarten behind Dothraki. Been given a freshen up and to my eye trialled up very well behind Equal Balance at Canterbury, and that horse won impressively on Friday at Wagga, so the form reads well.
Race 7. (15:09) Gold Coast Guineas 1200m
Going to side with class, which clearly lies with 10 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $2.50). She didn’t win a race in the Spring but the races she ran and how close she came was the campaign of a high class filly. Ran into Alizee several times and we know how good she is. Been given the good break with this Carnival in mind and her trials leading in have been outstanding.
6 Freddie Fox Trot (Bet Now: $10.00) is a very promising gelding that resumes for the Les Kelly team. The stable usually fire at their home track at the Gold Coast so expecting something positive from this ripper, who was tipped out after winning his fourth race on the bounce. Trialled up great a couple of weeks back at the Gold Coast and he appears as if he’ll be forward to run well fresh.
Highly doubt anything will beat home 5 Marble (Bet Now: $5.00) from the Mick Dittman. Not sure he would have beaten Whypeeo but I think he would have gone close. Got badly checked several times in the run, losing all momentum, but picked up and savaged the line late. Firmer footing, bigger track…big ticks.
Race 8. (15:49) AD Hollindale Stakes 1800m
I’m going to take a chance on my girl 10 Egg Tart (Bet Now: $9.00). I think you have to put a line through her last two. Firm tracks aren’t her go and she just wasn’t suited. First up in the Liverpool Cup, she produced one of the runs of the day behind crack Me Up. Trialled like a bomb recently at Canterbury and if the real Egg Tart turns up, she wins.
1 It’s Somewhat (Bet Now: $4.80) won this race last year and he looks on track to repeat the dose. Resumed in the All Aged a fortnight back and I thought he did a pretty good job in what was a hot race behind Trapeze Artist. Gifted the race last year when on speed, but I think cover might be his best option this year.
Was hard to miss the run of 9 Bedford (Bet Now: $13.00) in the Tails a fortnight back at Doomben. Could easily make a case that he should have won. Was building really good momentum, ready to burst through, but ran out of room and was untouched the final 100m. WFA is the query, but hard to knock and ignore that last start.
Race 9. (16:29) Silk Stocking 1200m
Just have to go with 5 Anatola (Bet Now: $3.20). Confidently backed when resuming over 1200m at Randwick a fortnight back where she sat on a hot speed, rode it, then clicked up another couple of gears and careered away for a dominant win, breaking the track record. To do that first up speaks volumes of how well she is going. More pressure and depth, but the penny might have finally dropped with her.
9 River Racer (Bet Now: $4.40) is the one that will be storming at them. Ridden upside down last time out over 1200m at Doomben but it didn’t matter to her because she absolutely spanked her rivals, which included boom horse Mr Marbellouz. Her pattern is to get back and savage the line, and with the hot tempo here, that looks to be her right pattern.
7 Crystal Fountain (Bet Now: $12.00) is five weeks between runs for the Anthony Freedman camp since scoring an impressive first up win at Caulfield where she was unwanted in betting but produced a lovely turn of foot from off the pace under Jye McNeil to score. She has promised blacktype potential since day one. Gets her chance here.
