A bumper card of racing has been assembled for Kalgoorlie on Saturday for Kalgoorlie Cup day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Cup Field 🏆: View the Kalgoorlie Cup Field
Race 1. (14:20) McDonald's Maiden 1300m
Tricky maiden this, but going the way of the first starter 7 Jag The Joker (Bet Now: $3.50) for the Ashley Maley team. This girl has had two trials in readiness for start one, the latest coming over 950m at Lark Hill when running second to Validation, who was beaten but with excuses last Saturday, so that form should hold up okay for a Kalgoorlie maiden and stable is having a good run.
8 Magic Will Reign (Bet Now: $3.10) is a son of Magic Albert for Adam Durrant on debut. This three year old last trialled at Lark Hill on September 16 and I didn’t mind the way he moved in his trial behind Star Present, beaten just under five lengths but looked to go about his business well enough for a Kalgoorlie maiden. Stable does love this race day, and bringing him here for the debut signals intent, especially with Pike on.
Back to 1300m should suit 1 God’s Land (Bet Now: $7.00). This son of Playing God ran over the mile here last time out and tried hard, but couldn’t quite see the trip out when fourth to Nord Avenir, who does look a progressive horse for Lindsey Smith. Back in trip looks ideal for him and if he can land on speed without spending too many petrol tickets, he’ll be hard to run down.
Race 2. (14:52) Yarradale Stud Handicap (64+) 1200m
Bit of a throw at the stumps here in the shape of the Neville Parnham trained veteran 6 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $10.00). This eight year old ran at Belmont last time out over 1200m when back in the run and did make up some ground, produced okay late splits, but was never really a winning factor. Does no work from the draw here, like him with relatively fresh legs and pace will be strong so he’ll get his chance.
4 Cryptic Love (Bet Now: $2.40) is flying for David Harrison. She ran over 1000m at Belmont two weeks ago when wide no cover throughout and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to an in form Some Sort. She does seem a much better mare when ridden cold and with cover, so if that can eventuate here, she’s one of the leading chances provided last start didn’t bust her.
3 Kiss The Breeze (Bet Now: $3.30) is a daughter of Star Witness for the Adam Durrant stable that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the features mares race on York Cup Day where she ran midfield behind High Tea, but by then she looked a tired horse and lacked any dash. She does seem to race best with fresh legs and with two trials under the belt, she’s ready to go.
Race 3. (15:32) Coastal Midwest Handicap (70+) 1100m
Going for value again, this time with 3 Count Tomoz Off (Bet Now: $7.00), who is third up here for David Harrison, so he should just about be at peak fitness. He ran over 1200m at Belmont two weeks ago where he got back in the run and found the line okay without really threatening behind Minus Looks. Several gear changes to sharpen him hopefully and Parnham takes the ride.
2 Mervyn (Bet Now: $2.45) looks a leading chance for the locals. Peter Fernie trains this gelding, who resumed over 1000m at Belmont when leading and giving a good kick but just felt the pinch late when fifth to Stageman. Think he’ll take really good improvement from that, he looks the likely leader and if he can pinch a cheap furlong, he’ll take some running down.
1 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $3.30) looks to be back on track. Won three back before a disappointing effort behind Ice Maker. He then ran again at Belmont two weeks ago and was very unlucky in a bunched finish behind Some Sort. Just didn’t really get clear air when he wanted it. If the breaks go his way here, despite the weight impost, he has the class to beat these.
Race 4. (16:12) Westspeed Platinum Handicap (0MW) 1200m
Hoping they let 1 Smart Fox (Bet Now: $6.00) jump and run. This gelding is trained by Adam Durrant and he comes here off the back of a seventh at Belmont over this trip last Wednesday when off speed, pulling and gave a decent kick early on in the straight but feeling the pinch late. With the claim for Mollie Clark, hoping he jumps clean and is allowed to roll in front.
4 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $3.10) is a fascinating runner. He returns to WA after having a few runs in Victoria where he promised so much after showing good ability to start his career in WA but for the most part, he struggled. Now under the care of Luke Fernie, he resumes without trial, but if he’s anywhere near right, he’ll win. But the best guide will clearly be the market.
3 Arnie’s Boy (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Patronize resuming for the Ashley Maley stable. This four year old hasn’t raced since June 15 at Belmont on a testing track when placing over the mile behind the then in form and above average Deimos. That form at the time did read well though Deimos fell away soon after. Resumes without a trial, but stable is going great guns.
Race 5. (16:52) Coates Handicap (1MW) 1100m
3 War Secrets (Bet Now: $3.10) can continue his winning ways. This bloke has won his past two for Peter Fernie, both over 1100m here. Wide no cover first up but was too good in winning the maiden before being even more impressive next time out, sitting back in the run and producing a brilliant finale to get the job done. No reason why he can’t make it three on the bounce.
David Smith has 2 Excaro (Bet Now: $3.30) flying at the moment. Won her first two starts for the campaign in impressive fashion before going to the Kambalda Cup where she ran fourth to Pym’s Royale but the effort was full of merit and that race clearly had more depth than what she’ll face here. Just depends if she can handle the relative weight and coming back in trip.
Happy to give respect to 7 Tajmali (Bet Now: $4.60). This filly was a month between runs when racing at this track/distance last time where she was well backed late and it looked as if the plunge would come off, but the break between runs just found her out late when second to War Secrets. Now has the run under the belt, should find the front and take a power of beating.
Race 6. (17:30) LD Total Handicap (64+) 1400m
2 Regal Counsel (Bet Now: $1.95) looks to be holding his form quite well and with that in mind, he should just about be putting this field away. This four year old won four on the bounce before racing over the mile at Belmont where he just got too far back in the run but found the line strongly late when fourth to Jedaffair. Back to 1400m is no drama and back at home, he’ll do me.
1 Miracle Man (Bet Now: $3.00) has a tricky gate to overcome, but he does have the class factor. He comes through the Kambalda Cup where he was freshened up and ran okay without being a winning threat when fourth to Pym’s Royale. Like him up to 1400m and if he can get cover or some kind of luck from the gate, he’s certainly got the ability and class to win.
The best version of 3 Sense Of Power (Bet Now: $12.00) would see her probably beat these, but gee she’s been poor in three runs back from a break. Was specked when leading last start at Belmont but gave in pretty cheaply and was pretty awful to the line. I couldn’t back her to win, but the way she’s going, she should be value and has to be included in exotics in case the real Sense Of Power turns up.
Race 7. (18:10) Suez Handicap (0MW) 1400m
2 Paradise Square (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the safe option. Peter Fernie trains this gelding, who comes through Kambalda Cup when wide no cover for the trip yet stuck to the task very well in defeat when third to stablemate Pym’s Royale, and clearly that form just reads so well for a no metro win race. Gets gate one, drops a mile in grade/depth…he’ll do me here against this lot.
9 Smarty (Bet Now: $3.10) is a definite threat for me. Peter Fernie trains this filly, who was confidently supported when resuming over 1100m here but I think in the end, gate one was a big negative for her as she got buried back on the fence and didn’t get clear air until it was all over. Hopefully Pile can get her clear air from the outset this time around and fitter, she’ll be hard to hold out.
For wider multiples, I’d be including 4 Hayan Lad (Bet Now: $13.00). He had specking when racing over 1200m here just under two weeks ago and stuck to the task pretty well when third to Nemiroff, held but far from disgraced. Seems to be racing as if the 1400m will suit and perhaps with a more conservative steer, he’ll be more effective and be stronger at the end of his race.
Race 8. (18:45) Kalgoorlie Cup 2200m
I think 7 Dark Prospect (Bet Now: $11.00) is a really good each way gamble in the Cup. He has finished fourth in both the Coolgardie and Boulder Cups his past two and each time he has caught the eye late, looking like a horse that will be spot on for the feature. The run prior to the two Kalgoorlie runs at Belmont was a beauty and I think each way, he’ll only run well.
What an effort it would be if 1 Ihtsahymn (Bet Now: $3.70) can win this first up. He hasn’t raced since scoring a mighty win in the Darwin Cup where he was probably ridden a touch too aggressively, but his class came to the fore late and he was too good. Proven weight carrier and he looked pretty good in a 1450m trial win at Lark Hill. He’ll take some beating.
It’ll be a big effort if 2 Touch Of Silver (Bet Now: $4.20) can win given the weight and the unknown at the trip. He comes through the Boulder Cup where he was back in the run and did make ground but was never a really winning threat. He’s in the right stable and has class on his side. Just not sure where he gets to in the run and the weight, at the trip…just not sure, but have to respect given the stable.
Race 9. (19:20) Neometals Handicap (1MW) 1760m
3 Stoicism (Bet Now: $3.10) looks the one to beat. Martin Allan trains this gelding, who was really well supported when resuming over the mile at Belmont and he seemed to have every chance. Just lacked the killer turn of foot to put them away when third to Jedaffair. That form clearly reads well for a race like this and I think the big tick for him is the step up in trip.
13 Macavity (Bet Now: $6.50) is a knockout chance here for sure. The 2100m was a bridge too far, so he was stepped back in trip to the mile last time and you could make a case that he should have fought the finish out. Just had no luck in the straight and by the time he did get clear, the race was over and he’s a horse that needs to build momentum and maintain it. Better luck here and he can win.
Back in trip and a fair bit back in depth should suit 2 Rhino Buster (Bet Now: $20.00). He comes through the Boulder Cup where he ran okay but was well held in a race which had good depth to it, won by Gangbuster. That was a bridge too far for him, so like him back to the 1760m and if he can get luck in the run from a tricky draw, I think he’ll take some beating here.
