Nine races will be run and won at Eagle Farm this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:53) Tab Plate 1000m
Been saying since the first trial that 4 Gotta Kiss (Bet Now: $2.90) could well be a leading chance for the locals in the Magic Millions. Steve O’Dea trains this filly, who cost $150,000 at the Sales and it looks like Proven Thoroughbreds have another smart one on their hands. She was outstanding in the first trial at Doomben before trialling here last Monday where she was made to work, but still impressed and ran good time. Confident she wins.
5 Lady Grazier (Bet Now: $6.00) looks a nice filly for Tony Gollan. She trialled last Monday here and led all the way under Brad Stewart. Looked to do a little bit wrong and was having a good look around, but she did it quite nicely I thought and looked to have plenty to offer. Last few years, the stable has been the best when it comes the juveniles early on in the season, so she’s a leading chance.
6 Loving Miss (Bet Now: $10.00) is a daughter of Love Conquers All that has had two trials in readiness for start one, the latest coming last Monday here where she ran third of four in one of the quicker heats of the morning. She sat last in the small field and never really looked like winning, was placed under pressure and responded okay without jumping up and down. Perhaps one for multiples.
Race 2. (12:28) Souths Sports Club Plate 1000m
7 Remorseless (Bet Now: $2.50) looks a leading chance. Team Snowden trains this colt, who trialled on the Kenso track last Monday where he sat outside the speed and was placed under pressure in the straight. Responded okay but clearly no match for Beyliks, who looks a real pro. The big tick for Remorseless is that he has the Snowden polish and they have a very good record with early juveniles.
9 Tick Tock Boom (Bet Now: $7.00) is a David Vandyke trained colt who makes his debut off the back of one trial, which came on his home track at the Sunny Coast over 850m where he sat off the speed before Maloney eased him wider and under light riding, picked them up and was pretty good in getting the job done. Looks a good mover and stable is flying, so have to respect him.
3 Market Trader (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Snitzel for Matty Dunn who won the opening trial here last Monday. He led throughout under Michael Cahill and looked very raw and new to the caper. Had the ears pricked in the straight, wanted to switch off, stride was abnormal, but he looks to have some ability, albeit time was the slowest of the morning. Doesn’t have the brilliance of some of these I think but runs well all the same.
Race 3. (13:03) Gallopers Sports Club Hcp 1200m
Speaking to a stable rep for Gerald Ryan this week, they told me that if 1 Deploy (Bet Now: $3.40) can’t win this, or go close, he’ll likely be retired. Surely he beats these? Hasn’t won in over two years, but this is without doubt the easiest race he has contested in such a long time. He gave a reasonable kick fresh in the Theo Marks but just felt the pinch late behind Arcadia Queen. He’ll lead this field up and with 59.5kg on his back, he’s just so well in.
2 Scallopini (Bet Now: $2.30) is the key threat. Steve O’Dea trains this talented gelding, who was absolutely truckloaded late in betting when resuming at Eagle Farm several weeks ago and for the most part, he looked in a spot of bother but his class came to the fore late and he was too good for them, just. Has plenty of room for improvement and though he wants further, he is stacked with talent.
6 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $31.00) is first up here and a cheeky run fresh wouldn’t totally shock. He hasn’t raced since the Rocky Newmarket where he couldn’t dash on the sticky track when fourth to Wonder Boom. Not really a noted fresh performer, but has residual fitness and didn’t mind the way he went in a recet Doomben trial. Perhaps one for later on in the prep, but chuck him in multiples.
Race 4. (13:38) Melbourne Cup Day @ Eagle Farm 1800m
I think 2 Profit (Bet Now: $1.95) can bounce back and win. Got a very cheap lead over the mile here two weeks ago and rightfully kicked on, but I just the stop/start tempo didn’t suit him and it allowed Guntantes, with speed in the legs, to just get the better of him. I think he’ll appreciate the rise to 1800m and with a more conservative steer and he be the chaser, he can win again.
Once upon a time, 1 Guntantes (Bet Now: $3.10) was a speed demon as a two year old but he’s relaxed big time in his races and is able to see out a trip, which saw him win over the mile a fortnight back, wearing down Profit in a real dash to the line, which suited him given he has the better change up speed. Think up to a more testing trip, he may get caught out, but has the runs on the board.
3 Don’t Waiver (Bet Now: $12.00) can be an improver here. He was five weeks between runs in the race mentioned above won by Guntantes. He was on speed and looked to travel well enough. Gave a kick in the straight but just couldn’t sprint with them and had to settle for third. IMO, he is too big in the market given he likely has more upside than the two favourites and a win certainly wouldn’t shock.
Race 5. (14:17) Hamilton Hotel (bm70) 1800m
Going the way of 9 Amicita (Bet Now: $8.00). Lightly raced mare for Tony Gollan that is putting together a decent record, winning three of her six career outings, winning her last two. Two back savaged the line from the back to win at the Sunny Coast before going to Ipswich where Byrne put her into a sweet spot just off the speed and once he got going on the turn and built momentum, it was game over. Big track, 1800m, upside, in form…hard to beat.
Back to 1800m and back in grade/depth should suit 1 Clevanicc (Bet Now: $19.00) for the Kris Lees stable. This guy hasn’t raced for three weeks since racing over 2000m at Doomben when sitting off a moderate tempo and really had no chance of figuring in the finish when down the track behind Lord Gododdin. Better suited here and can bounce back to the winners list.
The best version of 8 Bering Sea (Bet Now: $13.00) is clearly good enough to beat these but for the most part, he’s been disappointing this time in. He ran over the mile at Doomben last Wednesday where he was back and slightly held up but he had his chance to finish closer behind Conquer The Stars. Perhaps getting out in trip and onto a bigger track, he can find some positive form.
Race 6. (14:57) Chairman's Club (c3) 1200m
Tricky race, so going for one at a bit of value in the shape of 14 Cinnamon Missile (Bet Now: $26.00), trained by Matty Dunn. Stablemate The Fire Trap was good first up, but he can mix his form and is relatively short in the market, so each way, going with the stablemate, who resumed at Doomben and I thought he was quite good without a great deal of luck when a close up fourth. Fitter, bigger track, weight relief, and he did run a close up third to La Scopa in the Grafton Country Championship Heat, so the ability and class is there.
I’d be betting up on 9 Macewen (Bet Now: $2.90) if this was 1400m. He’s racing as if that trip will be ideal so interesting that Tony Gollan is keeping him to 1200m. He ran over 1200m at Doomben three weeks ago and looked to have his chance when fourth, but at the same time did cop some interference and perhaps he’s a momentum horse. He’s a threat, clearly…could I back him to win? If he got to $5-$6, yes. Not $4.
I think back to 1200m will suit 2 Mail Escort (Bet Now: $12.00). The Sears stable has him going well but he can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago when back and wide no cover, so that pretty much sealed his fate, but he stuck to the task well enough in defeat behind Enterprise Prince. Back to 1200m, he can threaten for sure if he gets better luck in running.
Race 7. (15:37) brc.com.au (bm85) 1600m
9 Galtero (Bet Now: $4.60) on top. Tony Gollan has tried to get him to be a stayer in recent runs, and while he has run well, he hasn’t been attacking the line, so like him back in trip. He ran over 2000m at Doomben last time where he was given every chance I thought but no match late for Lord Gododdin. Bit of depth to this field, but he’s hard fit, in form and will be strong late.
Can 3 Get Stuck In (Bet Now: $4.00) go on with it? Tony Gollan trains this gelding, who had been just fair to start the prep but found his confidence last time out over the mile at Doomben with a tough on speed, ridden somewhat against his pattern but was too good for his rivals. Think he’s better with cover and a sit, and last prep, once he found form, he held it.
2 Boncosta (Bet Now: $15.00) has been a beauty for Brett Bellamy for a little while and his good runs to start the prep was rewarded with a tough on speed win in the Murwillumbah Cup last time out, aided by a lovely steer from Tegan Harrison on speed. Harder here, but like the way he’s going about it at the moment and that Cup field did look to have a bit of depth to it.
Race 8. (16:17) Spring Cup Qlty 2225m
I think 7 Outraged (Bet Now: $9.00) is a good gamble. Was on him at the good odds when winning three back at the Gold Coast (Metro) and it looks as if he’s been set for this given he came back to the mile the next start before going to 2000m when good late off a slow speed won by Lord Gododdin. He’s going great guns the veteran and up to 2200m, I’m keen on his chances.
8 Boom Boom Epic (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing really well this time in for Chris Anderson. Narrow second to Lord Gododdin two back before backing up a week later and he stuck to the task pretty well in defeat behind Ocean Addict after chasing the tearaway leader Craiglea Cetina. Not sure what upside he has got left, but he’s tough, in form and will stay all day against these.
4 Alward (Bet Now: $12.00) should be suited up in trip. Gritty win over 1800m at the Gold Coast (Metro) two back before remaining at that trip here, with a break between runs, and was okay late behind the in form Looks Like Elvis. Bit of a query beyond 2000m, but overall, this isn’t an overly strong race and his form since coming to the Waller stable in Queensland has been good.
Race 9. (16:57) Events @ Brc Plate (c6) 1400m
5 Langhro (Bet Now: $3.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Steve O’Dea has this bloke flying this time in. Gave them a galloping lesson first up at the Gold Coast (Metro) before racing at Doomben three weeks ago where it was sustained speed from the front and though getting the staggers late, he was much too good. Bit harder here, and out to 1400m, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
Mick Lakey has done a fab job with 4 Enterprise Prince (Bet Now: $5.00) this time in. He’s been racing really consistently. Unlucky not to beat Langhro two back at Doomben before backing up a week later at this track/distance where Brad Stewart gave him a 12/10 steer and the gelding finished over the top of his rivals to get the win. Confident he goes close again.
Great to see 14 Dawson Diva (Bet Now: $11.00) back at the races. This mare hasn’t raced since starting as the rank outsider in the Queensland Oaks and nearly caused a massive boilover, but had to settle for a close up second to Winning Ways. That form, as a whole, looks very suspect, so that’s a concern looking ahead, but in terms of a Class 6 Plate, it reads well enough and her two trials have been encouraging.
