Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:50) Padua Old Boys Handicap 1050m
Just have to trust your eye with 1 Hopes Eternal (Bet Now: $1.85). His win three weeks back at this track/distance was unbelievable. He was spotting them 10+ lengths on the turn yet came the widest sprouted wings, and won by three. There are a couple of unknowns here, but we know this one is good. Very good.
3 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $2.60) is the big watch here. Son of Spirit Of Boom on debut for Tony Gollan. This bloke trialled on Tuesday here over the 840m and he absolutely walked in under McGillvray, winning by over eight lengths and absolutely smashing the clock. if he runs up to that effort here, he’ll go very close.
Outside that pair, it’s a real unknown. I’ll chuck in the other runner with race experience, 6 Kuril Fox (Bet Now: $27.00). He had a bit of market support before easing come race time when debuting here a fortnight back on the bog and after showing good speed, he punctured badly. Firmer footing helps and has the run under the belt.
Race 2. (13:30) Thompson Bus Services Plate (Class 3) 1200m
1 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $5.50) is the best horse in the race, but he has this awful racing pattern of getting a mile out of his ground and setting himself impossible tasks, like three weeks back at this track/distance when rocketing home to run a close up fifth to Now You See, beaten 0.8L. If he is within striking range on the turn, he’s the one.
11 Loose Goose (Bet Now: $8.50) is a handy mare for the Matty Dunn camp who should be near peak fitness. She ran at this track/distance a fortnight back on the bottomless track and stuck on pretty well when fourth to Sister Patti. Much better suited on firmer footing and draws to get a suck run behind them. Definite play.
Race 3. (14:10) Lite 'N' Easy Handicap (90) 2040m
6 My Giuliano (Bet Now: $5.00) is a tough one to trust, but I think each-way, he’s reliable enough here. Ran over the 2200m here a fortnight back where he looked all over a winner but just didn’t see the trip when nabbed by Anton En Avant. Back to the 2040m and firmer footing are big ticks and he looks the one for me.
3 Monteux (Bet Now: $6.50) hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over the 2200m at the Gold Coast where he sat worse than midfield in the run and closed off alright late in the piece behind Outraged. Ticked over with trial on Tuesday to get his fitness levels up and I like him here at the 2040m. Key threat.
4 One Inch Punch (Bet Now: $11.00) might just be looking for the rise in trip here, so he bears close watching. He had been racing okay in open handicaps over the 1350m/mile, but just lacked the killer blow to go with them. Drops a fair bit in depth here I suspect and if he goes back to his old pattern of being on speed, the speed in his legs will be a big thing going for him.
Race 4. (14:56) Weareco Handicap (Class 6) 1350m
10 Nilette (Bet Now: $3.40) was a solid favourite when racing here three weeks back over 1200m but she just didn’t quite finish it off as expected when down the track behind Now You See. That leaves me with real reservations about her at 1350m, but I’ll leave that in the very capable hands of Rob Heathcoate.
Race 5. (15:38) The Aitkenvale Family Health Care Centre Handicap 1050m
6 Tiyatrolani (Bet Now: $2.50) gets the nod for me here. Nippy mare for the Gollan camp that is first up here after a mixed Winter prep where she didn’t quite measure up at the top end but did win fresh in the Mick Dittman at this track/distance. Resumes with no trials, but should press forward, perhaps lead and take some running down.
1 Perfect Dare (Bet Now: $4.20) is the big watch here. Very good horse resuming for Matty Dunn. He ran twice during the Winter Carnival, running third in the Moreton Cup before finishing down the track in the Eye Liner. Trialled like Black Caviar at Murwillumbah to prepare for his return so a definite market/yard watch.
8 Love And Lies (Bet Now: $16.00) is a talented mare that is first up for the Jennifer Williams yard. This girl ran really well during the Autumn, including a couple of strong efforts at the Sydney midweeks behind subsequent blacktype performers. No trials, but can sprint well fresh and she draws to get a lovely run just off a hot speed.
Race 6. (16:23) Hillross Montefiore Handicap (70) 1640m
9 Snapper (Bet Now: $7.00) is going to win a race in town one day and when he does, several TV’s around Australia will be broken. He’s a nightmare to follow, but he always teases by getting back and running on, which is what he did last Saturday the Gold Coast behind the heavily backed and proven city performer Rhyme Nor Rhythm. Up to the mile suits and I think each-way, he’ll run well.
10 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $2.45) is a stablemate of Snapper who is very short in the betting but appears to be deserving after he gave them an absolute galloping lesson on a Gold Coast bog over 1400m last time out, leading all the way to win by over six. Goes just as well on firmer footing, so he has to rate highly here.
11 King Max (Bet Now: $41.00) is a Fred Smith trained veteran who has been racing very well in North Queensland in recent times and deserves a crack at the metro level. Lovely ride by apprentice Elyce Smith to win last time out in a six horse field at Rocky. Larry Cassidy takes over and he should press forward from the tricky draw. If he does, he’s a tough bugger to get past.
Race 7. (17:08) Padua College Handicap 1640m
1 Torgersen (Bet Now: $3.30) hadn’t won for a long time but the win finally came his way three weeks back at the Gold Coast in an open handicap where he chased tearaway leader Dreams Aplenty and dashed past her to win and ran sizzling time. He has performed well on rain affected ground before and he’ll eat up the mile.
12 Zahspeed (Bet Now: $4.80) has had two runs now for the Edmonds camp and I think he is ready to launch third up. Pleasing return fresh at the Sunny Coast behind Helarocity before racing over the 1350m here three weeks back where he just raced a touch flat after doing work behind Time To Torque. Should come on from that and if he gets on speed without spending too many petrol tickets, he’ll take some running down.
9 Lord Coconuts (Bet Now: $8.00) looks the knockout chance here. Five weeks between runs for the Gollan team when racing over the track/distance here three weeks back and he closed off with real purpose late to run fourth to Urban Knight. With that run under the belt, he’ll be better off and he will be strong late.
Race 8. (17:53) Mt Alvernia College Handicap 1350m
1 Colosimo (Bet Now: $5.00) clearly on top. To my eye she should have nearly won against the older horses last Saturday, but Fradd just rode her far too negatively and was giving them many lengths head start. She did a remarkable job to get as close as she did and her late splits were excellent. Yes ride her cold, but not that cold. Keen on her to handle the back up.
3 Miss Exfactor (Bet Now: $3.70) won that Gold Coast race a few weeks back and it was the aggressive ride from Jim Byrne that won the race for the daughter of Your Song. Set up a winning break and held on. 1350m is a different pain barrier, but she maps well and her record is very good. Definite threat for sure I feel.
6 Maharni (Bet Now: $14.00) is a very tough galloper for the Michael Nolan team who ran over the 1550m at Ipswich last Wednesday where he attempted to lead all the way and he gave a really good kick but he was outgunned late by Hang. I think back to the 1350m will really suit, he maps well and senior jock steers.
Race 9. (18:30) TH Cock Pty Ltd Handicap (Class 6) 1350m
12 Chamalu (Bet Now: $2.70) is a very promising gelding for the Liam Birchley team who looks hard to beat here. He resumed over 1200m at the Sunny Coast under the lights and absolutely bolted in under Damian Browne, spanking them, running time, and landing some big bets. Second up syndrome is the worry, but hard to ignore the resumption.
6 The Amateur (Bet Now: $9.50) is a tough, tough customer for the Toby Edmonds team. He hasn’t raced for over five weeks since leading all the way to win over the Ipwsich mile under Jeff Lloyd. Break between runs and back to the 1350m is some concern, but as I said, he’s tough and will give his all as always.
7 Mystical Renegade (Bet Now: $11.00) is a smart customer for the Matty Dunn team who was very impressive at the midweeks at this track/distance in early October when sprouting wings late on the bog to get up and win. Been given a few weeks to recover from that hard run and while he bumps into a few handy ones here, he should run well.
