A cracking program has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday with a couple of Group lll contests, the Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) and Prince Of Wales Stakes (1000m), highlighting the card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:29) Argonaut Corporate Advisers & Stockbrokers Plate 1100m
10 Party Night (Bet Now: $4.20) is a daughter of Galah on debut for the Paul Jordan stable. This filly has trialled twice for her first start, placing in a 400m trial at Belmont before winning impressively over the 950m at Lark Hill. The stable likes to have their runners on speed so the wide gate is no concern. Off the trials, she’s the one for mine.
7 Emerald Rose (Bet Now: $26.00) is another filly, this one for the David Harrison yard. This girl placed in a 400m trial at Lark Hill before backing up a week later and running second to Party Night in the trial mentioned above. Think Party Night has her measure, but this girl draws immediately outside Party Night, so she should get the cart over.
4 Texan Blitz (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Oratorio on debut for the Wolfe camp. This bloke trialled well against the older horses at Albany back on October 20 before trialling at Belmont on Monday where he went pretty good to my eye in running third to Pago Boy, beaten a length. Draws awkwardly, but looks to have ability.
Race 2. (16:14) The Tabtouch Masters Handicap (72+) 1100m
9 Get Over (Bet Now: $3.70) It is first up here for the Lindsey Smith team. This son of Saxon is eight weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Belmont where he sat off them, and was held up for a few strides, before shoving into the clear and savaging the line to win. Goes very well on the fresh side and Lucy Warwick steers.
4 Remember Berlin (Bet Now: $7.00) should be forgiven for his first up failure at this track/distance a fortnight back. He put on a show behind the gates, was fractious, then was wide no cover on speed. Did a pretty good job to actually attack the line and was far from disgraced. If he puts it all together, he’ll look the winner at some stage.
1 Zuccheros (Bet Now: $23.00) is crying out for further so staying at 1100m is the negative, but this race doesn’t appear overly strong. Four lengths off State Solicitor last time out and we know that horse is one of the leading local contenders for the Winterbottom. That form reads so well for a race of this nature.
Race 3. (16:59) Amelia Park Plate 1000m
2 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $2.60) is on the back up for the Lindsey Smith yard after racing in the Belgravia last Saturday where he sat on speed, gave a tremendous kick, and looked home, but he couldn’t withstand the brilliant finishing burst of Perfect Jewel. Back to 1000m is a big tick and he has won on the seven day turnaround before.
He rises a bit in depth/grade, but gee I was impressed with the win of 4 Soundcheck (Bet Now: $6.50) over this track/distance last Wednesday. Yes, aided by a brutal speed, but once he got clear air, he dashed like a really good horse and won very impressively. Sprinting is his caper for sure and he will get pace in front again.
1 Cognac (Bet Now: $6.50) will generate that pace. He resumed in the Bunbury Classic three weeks back where he just looked in need of the run. Sat on speed, kicked but just ran out of condition late when fifth to Ocean Jewel. Looks to get a good run here from the gate and will improve big time with the run under the belt.
Race 4. (17:44) Heineken 3 Handicap (1MW) 2100m
3 Master Magician (Bet Now: $4.20) on top, but just. He ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where he had pretty solid market support and aided by a sweet steer off the pace from Mitch Pateman, the son of Universal Ruler drew clear late and won with authority. He can handle the rise in depth here no worries.
1 Trap For Fools (Bet Now: $5.00) is a stayer in form for Lindsey Smith. On the quick back up after bolting up here last Saturday when leading all the way under a gun apprentice in Tayla Stone. Carried 52.5kg that day and now he has to lump 5.5kg more, which is the big negative for mine and why he ain’t on top.
2 Caralabek, (Bet Now: $14.00) on ability, is the best horse in the race I feel, but he is just very one paced and struggles to win. He comes through the race Master Magicician won above and seemingly, young Kersley gave him every chance, but Master Magician was too good. Not sure he can turn the tables, but he should run well all the same.
Race 5. (18:20) Tabtouch Handicap (1MW) 1400m
If he handles the back up, then 3 Star Value (Bet Now: $4.40) looks one of the hardest to beat here. On the quick back up after racing over 1600m here last Saturday where he got caught wide no cover on speed for the trip and really had no hope after that but he stuck to his guns pretty well behind See Me Sizzle. Draws to get a suck run here and back to 1400m is a big tick.
7 La Mouline (Bet Now: $1.95) is another on the quick back up. This former kiwi mare ran over 1200m here last Saturday and she got the dream run under Pike, getting the splits at the right time and bursting through to win impressively. 1400m is no issue, Pike on and she looks a definite leading contender here.
11 Forseen (Bet Now: $51.00) should be suited by the rise to 1400m here. He comes through the race won by La Mouline won above. Troy Turner gave him a peach off the pace and he had every chance, but just lacked the turn of foot to go with them. I think the extra furlong will help his cause and I think for trifectas/first fours, he’s a must.
Race 6. (19:00) Asian Beau Stakes 1400m
I think we could be seeing the Railway winner here and I think it will be 8 Royal Star. (Bet Now: $5.50). Ridden a bit upside down fresh three weeks back at Bunbury under Pike but she showed tremendous fight when challenged to hold them off and win. The further the better so the 1400m is ideal, Parnham steers and she was lethal in her lone second up run.
2 Cosmic Storm (Bet Now: $2.90) is the class horse of the field and Pike does steer her if that is a guide. Resumed in the Northerly a fortnight back and it was a bad watch if you were on. Got back, held up, no real clear air until it was all over when a narrow fourth to Silverstream. If the breaks go her way here, she’ll look the winner.
4 Pounamu (Bet Now: $13.00) is a horse I’d be including in wider exotics. Talented middle distance horse that is first up here after a pretty solid Winter prep where he mostly ran behind the star that is Scales Of Justice. Trialled up okay a few weeks back at Lark Hill and can pull out a decent run fresh, so a definite yard/market watch.
Race 7. (19:35) Prince Of Wales Stakes 1000m
9 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $4.20) is a brilliant mare for the Dan Morton team who deserves a crack at this level. She ran over the 1100m here a fortnight back and ran some freak splits late to run second to State Solicitor, who would start a clear favourite here. Back to 1000m is perfect and the senior jock takes over now.
6 Profit Street (Bet Now: $4.20) is a very smart son of Viscount that resumes for the Giadresco boys. This bloke was outstanding in the Winter, highlighted by a win in the HG Bolton and a placing in the Belmont Newmarket. Been given two trials to tune up, an indicator that he is forward enough to sprint hard fresh and Pike steers.
2 Durendal (Bet Now: $7.50) hasn’t done a great deal since coming over to WA but I think he can give a sight here. He resumes here off the back of two sharp trial wins, both run in decent time for the respective mornings. Draws a touch awkwardly but I think Knuckey can fire him out from the gate and get on speed.
Race 8. (20:15) The Merrywell Handicap (72+) 1600m
1 PInzu (Bet Now: $5.50) gets the nod for me in the get out. Adam Durrant trained galloper who has been very consistent right throughout the Winter/Spring. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he sat off the pace and tried hard but just didn’t show his usual ping when third to Pushin’ Shapes. Looks well placed against this lot.
10 Oliver’s Travels (Bet Now: $3.90) looks ready to tackle the mile now. He ran over 1400m here a fortnight back and I loved the way he closed off his race, attacking the line with real purpose late in the piece to get the win. On that effort, I have no issue with him at the mile, and the big tick is that he has that speed in the legs.
8 Point (Bet Now: $12.00) is a consistent type for the Aaron Bazeley team but he just can’t quite crack it for a win. He comes through the race won by Pushin’ Shapes mentioned above where he tried hard under Pike and loomed large but that horse just had the softer run and better turn of foot. He can go right on with it here with Parnham taking over.
