Spring has well and truly hit Randwick this Satuday with a start studded field set to take their place in the Group ll Missile Stakes (1200m), most notably Kementari. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:55) Winter Racing Handicap (70) 1200m
3 Nasaayim (Bet Now: $6.00) should be winning this I think. Best horse in the race by a fair bit for mine and has got the brilliance. Hasn’t raced since the Schweppervescene on Tancred Day when down the track behind Irukandji. Good fresh horse and has been tuned up with a couple of sharp trials. On speed might well be the spot to be, and she’ll definitely be there.
1 Osorno (Bet Now: $6.50) looks a lovely colt for James Cummings who was well backed when resuming at the Warwick Farm midweeks where he produced a brilliant finale from the back out wide to nab them on the peg for an impressive win. The time matched up well with the other 1200m race on the same day and he’ll come right on from that.
9 Onthetake (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Krupt filly for Clare Cunningham who comes through the Osorno race at Warwick Farm and you could make a little case that she should have nearly won the race. Just got held up when building up the revs when a narrow third to the Godolphin colt. Did beat Osorno last prep over 1400m, so it’ll be interesting to see how effective she can be here at 1200m for a filly looking as if she wants further.
Race 2. (12:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
13 Vivid Pink (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Matty Dunn trained mare who was good when resuming at the Gold Coast before racing over 1400m during the Grafton Carnival where she landed some nice bets at longer odds, finishing off strongly out wide late under Clayton Gallagher to get the job done. Third up at 1400m looks an ideal set up.
2 Cliff (Bet Now: $4.20) is racing in good form for the Joe Cleary team but just can’t quite crack it for a win. He ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where he tried hard but had to settle for third to Gitan. Runner up Nicconita ran well last Saturday so the form looks solid enough for a race with seemingly less depth.
Might just be one run short, but 6 Fui San (Bet Now: $7.00) is a proven Highway winner against this lot, who to be fair, have raced okay at this level but are yet to greet the judge. He resumed on the Acton track at Canberra and closed off okay behind Boyer, who was good at Goulburn on Friday. Might want 1600m, but draws a soft gate and has upside.
Race 3. (13:05) Cindy Sullivan Memorial Handicap (88) 2400m
If 6 Raqeeq (Bet Now: $2.45) can handle the seven day back up, he’ll be winning again I feel. Admittedly, the ride certainly helped him win last Saturday at Rosehill, but ride aside, he was dominant in winning and really drew clear late. He’ll eat up the 2400m, has upside, a turn of foot…you’d think only bad luck beats him.
3 Exoteric (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who is going quite well at the moment. Didn’t handle the wet track first up at Doomben behind Ruling Dynasty prior to racing last Saturday at Doomben over 2200m where he just missed in a blanket finish won by Brilliant Jet. Rises a bit in depth but has upside and I think the stable switch is a lead, perhaps, that he’s going well.
11 Allcash (Bet Now: $19.00) has been a pretty good stayer for Chris Waller for a couple of seasons. Hasn’t been winning many races but has rarely been far away, the latest coming a couple of Wednesdays back at Warwick Farm over 2200m when a narrow second to Follow Suit. Ran behind that horse again on Wednesday at Warwick Farm in a fast run race and worked home well once again. 2400m on the bigger track will help and his run prior behind Ombudsman at this track/distance reads okay for this.
Race 4. (13:40) Everest Carnival On Sale Handicap (78) 1800m
Thin race so I’ll have something each way on 6 Dreams Of Paris,(Bet Now: $14.00), who looks to be going really well for Mitch Beer. Just looked a bit flat second up in the Leilani Final behind Miss Gunpowder before racing last Wednesday Canterbury when working home strongly to run second to Gauguin. Untried beyond the mile, but is racing as if it will suit, and this race has no depth.
5 Sweet Victory (Bet Now: $3.30) is on the quick back up for Mark Newnham after racing last Saturday over 2000m where she lumped 60kg and that, combined with a strong 2000m, probably just found her out behind Huangshan. Back to 1800m against the mares with Bowman on, she’ll prove hard to beat.
8 Fleeting Stryke (Bet Now: $23.00) comes through the Gauguin race mentioned above from last Wednesday. She was very one paced to the line but she kept finding and in the end was only beaten two lengths. She’ll definitely eat up the 1800m, should be close to hard fit now and I think she’ll be better suited on the bigger track.
Race 5. (14:15) Tony Crawford 50th Handicap (91) 1600m
I think this race is all about 2 Avilius (Bet Now: $4.50) and how forward he is. If he’s anywhere near right, I think he’ll be far too good for this lot, who for the most part, are either coming to the end of the prep or out of form. He is a former French galloper making his Australian debut for the Godolphin team and he has really looked the part in a couple of trials.
7 Gresham (Bet Now: $2.60) is a son of Sebring for Chris Waller who has been in work a fair while but continues to race quite well. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought Shinn gave him every chance but he had no answers late for the finale of Gaulois. Not sure he has much upside left, but hard fit and in form.
11 Impavido…(Bet Now: $5.50) I can’t catch him but on recent form, he’s certainly working up towards a win. Ran over 1500m at Rosehill three weeks ago where he sat wide throughout yet kept surging, hit the front and looked home but was pipped on the peg by Sparky Lad. Has run well at the Randwick mile before and being fourth up, he should just about be ready fitness wise.
Race 6. (14:50) ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (82) 1200m
5 Intuition (Bet Now: $4.40) is a James Cummings trained gelding who had been quite poor to start the prep before being given a month break and racing at the Warwick Farm midweeks where he was well backed and despite having a little think about it late, he got the job done. He has shown Saturday class ability before. He gets another chance.
3 Reach For Heaven (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Kris Lees trained gelding who had trialled well prior to resuming over 1200m at Rosehill three weeks ago where he got a fair way back in the run but I liked the way he closed his race off behind Star Of Monsoon. That form has been franked with Smartedge winning at the midweeks and this horse likes Randwick.
I couldn’t back him to win but I reckon for exotics, I’d be including 11 Nick On The Run (Bet Now: $35.00) for Paul Perry. He comes through the Bandipur race over 1000m here two weeks ago where he got back in the run and never looked likely but he closed off okay late and produced decent splits. Just has to tick the 1200m box but I reckon he’s going alright.
Race 7. (15:30) Missile Stakes 1200m
Is it the same thought process that we had with Vega Magic last Saturday when it comes to 2 Kementari (Bet Now: $2.05)? Chips in for the resumption, bolt in and secure an Everest slot. He’s a high class four year old resuming after a fab Autumn prep, which included an outstanding Randwick Guineas triumph. Ended the prep with a luckless 10th in the Doncaster. Two trials leading in have been super…he’s ready to rock and roll.
4 Pierata (Bet Now: $4.20) is another horse who hasn’t been dismissed as a potential Everest slot holder, though it’s unlikely he’ll get one. He’s a very good horse for Greg Hickman after a stellar Summer/Autumn, with the highlight clearly being the Brisbaen Summer Carnival where he really came of age, most notably in the magic Millions Guineas. His two trials have been very good and looks ready to go first up
6 Lanciato (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Mark Newnham trained galloper resuming. His Summer/Autumn was outstanding, with his customary brilliant finale coming to the fore. His two trials leading in have been quite encouraging and with a likely hot speed, his get back/run on racing style will suit him and he could easily surprise.
Race 8. (16:10) Half Yearly Membership Handicap (82) 1400m
Happy to stick with 8 Sanctioned (Bet Now: $12.00). Was on him when he resumed at this track/distance two weeks ago where the bias didn’t help him at all. He was building up really nicely, clocking some really good splits between the 800m-200m, but just ran out of condition late. He’ll come right on from that. If we get an even level playing field, he’ll take some beating.
9 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $7.00) had been bursting to win a race all prep but hadn’t been quite able to get the job done. That all changed three weeks back against the older horses here when coming with a well timed run from the back under Blake Shinn to nab them right on the peg. Kept on ice from last Saturday in preference for this, which looks to be the right move.
Interested to see what 1 Berdibek (Bet Now: $26.00) does here. Former French galloper for John O’Shea who had a two run Autumn prep where he didn’t do much each start, but he didn’t look entirely ready. Been given a good break and his two trials leading in have been encouraging. Look for him to get back and work home late.
Race 9. (16:50) ATC Handicap (78) 1000m
6 Soothing (Bet Now: $3.30) is a fascinating runner. James Cummings trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since May 30 when resuming at Warwick Farm where she sat wide no cover on speed, albeit a slow tempo, but kicked hard when asked and won well. Tune up trial recently at the same track was good…she’s a horse that needs things to fall into place, because the times she has worked hard, she’s turned it up. Happy to give her the nod though.
9 Rebel Miss (Bet Now: $9.50) is a real quirky horse for Matty Smith. She’s only got a 75m-100m burst on her and after that’s run out, she paddles. I think that’s what happened a fortnight back at this track/distance. Weatherley booted her clear, looked home but that burst came to an end and Bandipur nabbed her. If she’s cuddled for the final 100-150m, she’ll look the winner.
13 Don’t Tease Me (Bet Now: $31.00) is a speedy customer for Stephen Gleeson. He resumed in the Kirby during the Grafton Carnival where he was wide throughout on a brutal speed and dropped out behind Just A Bullet. The trial win at Muswellbrook showed intent to run well first up but had no luck. 1000m on dry ground does look suitable for a proven city performer.
