4/8/2018 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Belmont, New Season Sprint day

A seven race program will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday where the feature race is the $100,000 New Season Sprint (1000m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

9 Polite Pass (Bet Now: $2.70) looks an ideal way to start the day. This daughter of Skilled was four weeks between runs when racing over the Northam mile last time where she got back off a slow tempo but charged and in the end just missed out on the win when beaten narrowly. Should come right on from that and Pike sticks.

4 Let Me Pass (Bet Now: $8.00) should like the step up to the mile. This gelding attempted to lead all the way over 1300m at Northam last time where he was given seemingly every chance in front and rightfully gave a good kick but was outgunned late. I think the rise to 1600m will suit him and Lucy Warwick is very good on front runners.

1 Golden Trigger (Bet Now: $16.00) is another who looks ideally placed at the mile. He ran over 1400m at Pinjarra where he had a good run just near the speed and looked to travel well but when the sprint came on, he was somewhat left behind but stuck on when fourth. Should get a good run once again and is a definite threat.

7 Big Caroline (Bet Now: $4.00) on top for me. This girl is two weeks between runs after racing at this track/distance where she got well back off the pace but finished off hard late to run second to Count Tomoz Off. Should be able to sit a touch closer from the good draw and the good lead is that Pike takes over, plus the mare thrives on wet ground.

4 One Short (Bet Now: $4.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Steve Wolfe trains this gelding, who ran over 1400m here a fortnight ago where he was near a genuine speed throughout and tried hard but Abdicator proved far too good. That horse went on to bolt up last Saturday, so the form reads well. Back to 1200m the little niggle but has the quality to win.

3 Get Over It (Bet Now: $9.00) is the very interesting runner. Talented galloper resuming for the Jim Taylor team. This bloke had a two run prep in the Autumn and failed to fire a shot in a race which had far more depth than what he faces here. Trialled up well here last month and is 2/2 on wet ground and saves his best for Belmont.

Happy to have something each way on 11 Irish Moshe (Bet Now: $15.00). This girl ran at this track/distance just under a fortnight back where she was three and four wide throughout but battled on quite well in defeat when third to Fair Foot. Draws to get a much more economical run in transit and is on the minimum. Think she’ll run well at odds.

4 Kelly’s Gem (Bet Now: $2.90) is an Adam Durrant trained mare who didn’t have much luck in the Belmont Oaks two back prior to racing at this track/distance where it looked as if it was going to be an absolute nightmare but she eventually got clear, surged hard late and grabbed victory in the shadows.

1 Fair Sonari (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Stephen Miller trained mare who should appreciate the slight drop in depth. On the quick back up after racing over 1300m here last Saturday where she was on speed throughout and looked to travel well but just died on the run late behind Yindi. Has run well up to 1800m so the mile here is no issue.

I think there is a couple of runners you could speck each way here. First of those is 8 Yeah Dardy (Bet Now: $11.00). This gelding resumed over this track/distance a fortnight back where he got well back off the rails in a really fast run race but closed off quite sharply over the final 150m when just behind Undisclosed. He’ll get a fast speed once again. Hopefully can sit a touch closer.

6 Super Maxi (Bet Now: $2.25) is likely to go around as favourite given how impressive he has been in two runs in WA since coming from NSW. Resumed with a comfortable win before a fighting second to the low flying Ambiente. The negative is that he won’t get his own way in front with Caipirinha being one of several likely to push forward. But he has gate one so the option is there to take a sit.

7 Woolibar (Bet Now: $41.00) is another I’ll be happy to speck each way. He resumed in the Undisclosed race where he got a fair way off them on the rail and was never really a winning threat but he did make up ground very late. He goes much better second up and if the breaks go his way, he can definitely take this out.

8 League Of Nations (Bet Now: $10.00) just has to tick the wet track box and I think he’ll be too good. Had his first run for Chris Gangemi at this track/distance on July 11 where he did all the work in front, kicked clear and despite being out of tickets late, he clung on. Been given extra time to recover from that and the dreaded bar plates come off, so obviously he’s going well.

1 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $4.20) is the class runner of the field and by some distance. Just a matter of how forward he is in condition. This bloke hasn’t raced since mid February when scoring a fighting win in the Magic Millions at Pinjarra. Been given a good break and looked pretty good to the eye in a recent Lark Hill trial.

3 Battle Brewing (Bet Now: $23.00) is a very interesting runner. This bloke is making his WA debut for Fred Kersley after formerly being with the Macdonald/Gluyas team. He last raced on February 24 when finishing last behind Blue Tycoon. His SA form reads well…just a matter of how he’s going and how forward he is.

This race is all about 2 Pym’s Royale  how he’s recovered from Sunday and whether or not he’ll handle the wet track. If he ticks both of those boxes, he should prove hard to beat here. Dominant win in the Magic Millions on Sunday at Pinjarra where he did a bit of work in the run, wanted to pull hard but his class came to the fore. Finds a very winnable city race and Pateman sticks.

8 Glimmer Girl (Bet Now: $4.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where she was run off her legs somewhat and couldn’t really get balanced up at all due to the speed when midfield behind By Decree. Don’t think they’ll go hard this time around, blinkers go on and Pike takes over.

1 Russian River (Bet Now: $41.00) is a son of U S Ranger resuming for the Bruce Watkins yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since January 20 at Ascot when finishing fourth behind the talented galloper Sandalwood. He has had two trials to prepare for his return and is a first up winner. Think he’s one to watch from a marker perspective.

4 Cougar Nights (Bet Now: $14.00) on top for me in the get out. He is on the seven day back up for Michael Lane after racing over the mile last Saturday where he got well off the speed, forced very wide on the turn and was never a winning threat but did make up ground behind Abdicator. Up to 2000m a big tick and I reckon he’s going well enough.

12 Truly Belong (Bet Now: $4.20) is likely to go around as favourite and to be fair a deserved one after coming through the 3YO Fillies races during the Winter Carnival where she ran well, including a closing fifth in the Oaks. Takes on the older horses now, which isn’t an easy task so early in the season, but always respect the Durrant/Pike factor.

11 Paddy’s Shadow (Bet Now: $4.40) comes through a similar path to Truly Belong and to be fair, she’s probably run better races than the Durrant mare. Was wide throughout in the Belmont Classic but battled away really well in defeat when fourth to Come Play With Me. Should do no work from the gate, hard fit and in form.

NEXT BEST: Race Six Number 2 Pym’s Royale

LONG SHOT: Race Seven Number 4 Cougar Nights
