SA metro racing on Saturday heads to Murray Bridge where nine races have been set down. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out seven metres from the 1800m-1000m; Out four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:01) Isabelle Cappelleri Mdn Plate 900m
6 Hypersonic (Bet Now:Β $2.05) should get away with this on debut. Well bred Brazen Beau gelding that is on debut for Team McEvoy. Has had a couple of jumpouts at Flemington and Moonee Valley respectively to get ready for start one and has looked pretty good each time. Not the strongest maiden this so think he can get away with it.
3 Deevine (Bet Now:Β $6.50) is a son of Zebedee for Ryan Balfour that resumes. This three year old showed good promise in his first prep, placing in some strong form races behind the likes of Bludog and Motell. Trial win on Tuesday was quite good to the eye and on the clock and should get a lovely run just off the speed from the gate.
Not sure 14 Zegresto (Bet Now:Β $17.00) wins but can include in multiples. Darren Magro trains this filly, who ran in the Final Chance maiden from two weeks ago at Morphettville when wide no cover throughout and didn’t finish it off in a forgive run. Prior efforts suggested a maiden win wasn’t far away. Certainly would include in multiples.
Race 2. (12:36) Magic Millions Plate 1200m
8 Another Award (Bet Now:Β $3.90) is Macdonald/Gluyas trained daughter of Shamus Award that is just under a month between runs since resuming over 1000m here in a maiden when sitting back near last in the run before peeling wider on the turn and producing a really strong finale to get up and win. Form out of the maiden has been suspect but stable is flying with their babies.
9 Daily Spirit (Bet Now:Β $3.20) should be given another chance. Heavily backed favourite when racing over 1050m at Morphettville two weeks ago but you’d have to mark him down as disappointing I think, seemingly getting every chance when third to impressive winner Instant Celebrity. Think a rise to 1200m suits…do I want to take short odds about him again? No.
Looks a good race for the Macdonald/Gluyas trained juvenile 4 Super Striker (Bet Now:Β $6.00). Somewhat unwanted in betting when racing at this track/distance three weeks ago but despite that, his run was a beauty, closing off with real purpose late when third to Mayameen. If this was 1400m, he would be a good thing, but remaining at 1200m should be fine.
Race 3. (13:11) Tab (bm68) 2500m
With 51kg on her back, it sets up really well for 7 Down The Lane (Bet Now:Β $3.70), who was scratched from a much easier at Balaklava on Wednesday to be saved for this. Ran last Wednesday at Murray Bridge over 2000m and kept chasing the line with purpose, just missing out on picking up Sanima Star. 2500m looks ideal and with the claim she’s just so well in.
4 Disco Rebel (Bet Now:Β $7.00) has been up a little while but continues to race well for the John Dunn camp. Ran over 2000m here last Wednesday when near the speed throughout and battled away well but overall she had her chance when fourth to Sanima Star. Placed at Stakes level during the Adelaide Carnival over this trip behind Oceanex, so she has to be respected.
5 Spiegel Grove (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is looking like he is ticking along nicely for a race like the Port Augusta Cup given he does normally save his best for the dirt there, but his effort over 2000m here last Wednesday was quite good I thought, closing off nicely to run third to Sanima Star. Rise in trip will be no issue for him and is a knockout chance.
Race 4. (13:46) Carlton Draught 3yo 1200m
5 Air Marshal (Bet Now:Β $4.60) on top. Will Clarken trained son of Smart Missile that had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1000m here three weeks ago where he was back in the run and couldn’t really get a proper chance to wind up into his work but he was good late when fourth to Dimaggio. Up to 1200m, upside to come, like him here.
2 Calypso Reign (Bet Now:Β $4.60) looks set for this race. Good from the back over 1200m two back behind Midnight Storm before being freshened up and raced in the Dimaggio race from three weeks back here when near last in the run, peeling wide and finishing off strong to run second. He’ll eat up 1200m here and is hard to beat.
6 Silver Lining (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is a little query at 1200m but think she’s going well enough to handle it. Lovely ride from Toeroek saw her win first up on the Parks track, beating Dimaggio, before running sixth to that horse here three weeks ago, but she was nearer the inside and that wasn’t the A1 ground for the meeting. Can win, but will need luck.
Race 5. (14:21) Fibretrack (bm82) 1200m
6 Howlowcanyougo (Bet Now:Β $2.60) is a quality animal for Patrick Payne that was a notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1100m at Ballarat but loved the way he found the line late, just missing out on picking up the in form Can’t Be Done in a race which had depth to it. Fitter and up in trip, he looks a standout against these.
3 Kabini (Bet Now:Β $8.50) back in SA can bounce back big time. Ran placings in both the McKay and Proud Miss during the Adelaide Carnival before going to the Valley three weeks ago where she got back and it was a meeting where on speed was the spot to be, so be forgiving of that effort behind Be My Star. Good enough to take this out, clearly.
4 Zalmona (Bet Now:Β $9.50) is a son of Good Journey for the Peter Blanch team that was luckless here two back before backing up a week later at Morphettville were he wasn’t entirely happy on the wet track but was still solid enough in defeat behind Arkham Knight. Off the run two back here behind Dexelation, he can take this out for sure.
Race 6. (15:01) Weddings At Bridges Ctre (58) 1600m
Not a great deal of confidence but on top is 5 Classy Joe (Bet Now:Β $10.00), on the seven day back up for John Hickmott after racing over 1550m last Saturday at Morphettville on the Parks track where he was given a lovely ride by Maund and was there to win, but had no answers to the slick finale produced by Rothmoore. Blinkers on and he has run well on the back up previously.
7 Ancient History (Bet Now:Β $9.50) has been up a fair while for Dean Saxon but he’s racing well. Last couple of runs have come over 1500m at Gawler, winning two back before running a game fourth to Crypto Currency a couple of Wednesdays back when a notable drifter in betting. In previous attempts at Saturdeay grade, he’s been poor, but this isn’t a strong race.
6 Rapid Raiser (Bet Now:Β $11.00) is a Jake Stephens trained gelding that can bounce back here after racing over the mile at Murray Bridge a few weeks ago when doing a bit of early work in the run and tried hard but the finale was a tad weak behind Elusive Nature. Not sure what upside he has got left, but with a better run in transit, can improve.
Race 7. (15:41) Henry & Jack West (bm72) 1800m
Don’t see 1800m being an issue for the McEvoy three year old 7 Eluding (Bet Now:Β $2.40), who was well backed when racing over the mile here three weeks ago and under a lovely ride from Vorster, he was far too good for them in an impressive win. Off that, 1800m should be fine and he’s got more upside than most engaged here.
8 Hasta La Fiorente (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is putting together a good record for Sue Murphy. Confidently backed two weeks ago over 2000m at Murray Bridge and the bets were landed. Loved the way he changed gears when asked by Pannell and was too strong. Off that, back to 1800m here should be fine and has more upside than most.
2 Lieder (Bet Now:Β $15.00) is certainly capable of winning. Has had a few weeks off since racing at this track/distance where he seemed to get every chance, but I don’t think he was entirely happy on the shifty track behind La Belle Jude. Hopefully gets firmer footing this time around and the run prior at Morphettville would see him go close here.
Race 8. (16:21) Finn & Paddy West (bm64) 1200m
In the corner of the Sam Burford trained 1 Oh Mo (Bet Now:Β $4.00). Was a heavily backed odds on pop at Murray Bridge last time, backed into odds on. IMO, he was ridden far too negatively by Tourneur and was set an impossible task in a slowly run race. Convinced the horse is going well and on his home track again, keen on him getting into the winners list.
10 Just Chipping Away (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is a Darryl Dodson trained mare that specking at odds when resuming at Morphettville two weeks ago when on speed and looked to travel really well under Crowther, and when she booted clear, it looked race over, but first up on that testing track, condition gave out late when nabbed near the peg by Beeokay. You’d like to think she improves off that and is hard to beat.
4 Andaz (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a big query here. Handy grey for the McEvoy camp that makes his debut for the stable after formerly being with Chris Waller. Only have to go back to his 3YO season where he was four lengths off Merchant Navy in the Coolmore Stud, but really since then, he’s done nothing. Quirky horse, but two jumpouts for the new stable have been encouraging.
Race 9. (17:00) Irongate (bm58) 1000m
I’ll take a punt on 6 The Difference (Bet Now:Β $2.60), a talented gelding for Team McEvoy that resumes. Won like a very good horse on debut at this track/distance but in two subsequent runs he was disappointing and was spelled. Interesting jumpout at Gawler where he was near the speed until the final 200m when seemingly throttled down by Vorster, so watch the market.
Interesting to see what they do with 7 Hushiano (Bet Now:Β $10.00). This mare normally is ridden near the speed, but two weeks ago at Morphettville, they rode her stone cold to be saved for one run and admittedly she did find the A1 ground, but still had to take advantage of it and indeed she did, savaging the line to win on the peg. Leading chance no matter how they ride her.
The best performances from 14 French Rock (Bet Now:Β $8.50) seem to be when he has fresh legs so he’s getting respect from me here. Resumes for Bill Bogarts after a somewhat disappointing Spring/Summer prep where he teased early on to win but towards the end, the wheels came off big time. Been given a good break and recent Morphettville jumpout was encouraging.
