The Kensington track at Randwick is where Sydney racing takes place this Saturday where eight races have been set down. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:40) #theraces Handicap 1000m
2 Spaceboy (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) on top for me. Gary Portelli trains this youngster, who resumes off the back of some really good form in his first prep, namely behind the likes of Tassort, Unite And Conquer and Exhilarates, which is A1 juvenile form. Been given a good break, dodged the Autumn and his two trials have been very good, especially the latest when leading and bolting up, charging through the line.
I think 1000m on the Kensington track is a good set up fresh for the Gerald Ryan trained 1 Covert Ops (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS). Was run of the race on debut in the Breeders Plate when beaten by Dubious. Spelled and resumed in the Pierro Plate where he was on speed and tired badly behind Tenley. Been given another break and has trialled well again. He’ll lead and look the winner. Last 75-100m will be the test.
12 Duenna (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Sepoy on debut for the James Cummings stable. Was only a narrow trial win on April 15, but loved the way she attacked the line when asked by J Mac. Got held up but brought to the outside and picked up really quickly under riding, which is a good sign. Like seeing a horse respond quickly under pressure in a trial, so have to respect her here.
Race 2. (12:15) Events By ATC Handicap (78) 1000m
4 Revenire (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained son of Lonhro resuming. He has been a bit costly and frustrating to follow throughout his career but does find a winnable race to resume in. Ran over this track/distance on January 5 when down the track in an on pace dominated affair won by Heart Conquered. Good fresh horse and has trialled well a couple of times in readiness.
5 Brook Magic (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Hinchinbrook for Joe Pride resuming. This girl hasn’t raced since November 10 at Rosehill when beaten under three lengths by a handy sprinter in Falerina, albeit in a race which had less depth than what she faces here. Has had two trials in readiness for her return and has been quite good to the eye. Bomb fresh horse too.
7 Exceltic (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is a Gary Portelli trained three year old resuming. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Eskimo Prince in the Autumn when not having much luck in the run when three lengths away from Gem Song. Interesting he resumes without a trial but gets good speed in front of him this time around and if he runs up to his best, he’s capable of winning.
Race 3. (12:50) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
2 We Concur (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) on top for me. Matty Dunn trains this three year old, who comes here off the back of a midweek win at Ipswich where he didn’t look happy at all around the tight circuit but class got him home in the end. Didn’t beat much, but he did it well late and the two runs prior were strong, the run start prior at the Gold Coast being enormous given he bombed the start.
3 Je Suis Tycoon (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) has had a few homes throughout her career but seems to be enjoying life under Jenny Graham. Gee she let down with a powerful finishing burst to win at Newcastle last time out, sitting back in the run before being presented wider on the turn and finishing best to score. She has been city class once upon a time, so she’s capable of running well at this level.
7 Velaro (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Bullet Train for Cameron Crockett that is resuming. Stable is having a good run at the moment and they have this talented four year old resuming. Hasn’t raced since November when contesting an open handicap at Quirindi where he ran a close up third. Has had two trials in readiness for his return and can sprint well fresh, plus gets the claim for Robbie Dolan.
Race 4. (13:25) ATC Heritage Centre Tours Handicap (78) 1800m
I’m the number one ticket holder in the fan club of 13 Duchess Of Lennox (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) so going her way. She’s always shown something since she first trialled. Didn’t do much on debut before Stephen Jones tinkered with the gear and she produced a stunning win at Scone over 1300m before stepping up to the mile and being even more impressive. Now with Chris Waller, loved the way she closed off in her Canterbury trial, and the extra trip no issue. Keen to see how she goes.
9 Nobu (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a Chris Waller trained stayer on the Derby path in Queensland. Didn’t measure up without luck in the NZ Derby so returned home and resumed over the 1550m here where he was very good in defeat when beaten narrowly by Pelorus Jack, with condition just giving out late. He’s a bit one paced but will keep coming and should have improvement.
4 Ombudsman (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) should just about be ready to do something for Chris Waller. Too far back/in need of the run fresh here behind subsequent Stakes placegetter Quackerjack before going to Warwick Farm where he came off the bit very early but stuck on and was okay late behind Valentino Rossa. Third up at 1800m looks ideal…might need one more run, but has shown quality in the past.
Race 5. (14:05) TAB Rewards Handicap (78) 1100m
Just one soft trial for 9 Kapajack (Bet Now: $2.50) but he’s the best horse in the race and hoping class gets him home. Talented three year old for the Hawkes camp that is first up after a really good start to his career in the Summer, winning a Saturday benchmark race on debut before two solid runs, then was tipped out. Not really pushed out in the Canterbury trial but has class/quality.
Giving respect to 3 Zonk, (Bet Now: $6.00) resuming for Les Bridge. This girl just had one run in the Summer, which came at Randwick on December 29 when a close up second to the talented galloper Clipper. Very good when produced fresh and has looked pretty good in a couple of trials leading in. Stable normally has them soft in condition fresh, but this girl looks forward.
10 Absolute Ripper (Bet Now: $26.00) is indeed a ripper and she has the right racing pattern for this track. Was kept relatively safe in betting when resuming over 1000m at Orange and she was just too speedy for her rivals, continuing her good fresh record. 1100m is the little query, but she’ll jump, run and give them something to chase. Last bit will test but hard to knock a mare in winning form.
Race 6. (14:45) Kensington Handicap (78) 1300m
Not discounting 3 Strome (Bet Now: $7.00) here. Gary Portelli trains this mare, who had trialled up really well prior to resuming at Gosford (Metro) where she got a fair way back in the run and looked no hope on the turn but was brought to the outside and she absolutely savaged the line to score a massive win. Think the extra trip will only help her, as should a good tempo…a win wouldn’t totally shock.
2 Shokora (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Nicconi mare for the Hayes/Dabernig team resuming. This mare hasn’t raced since January 5 at Caulfield when running a close up fourth to the in form Supre. She does seem a mare that races best on the fresh side and her trials leading in have been quite good. 1300m first up tells me she’s ready to go first up, so have to see what the market does.
I think you have to believe what you saw when it comes to the trial of 11 Palmateer (Bet Now: $10.00). If J Mac sneezed on her, she would have bolted up in the trial but instead was under a big hold when second. Not a noted first up performer, and usually trials well, but not as well as that. Gets gate one, and if she can make full use of that, I think she’ll run a bold race.
Race 7. (15:25) Tab.com.au Handicap (88) 1250m
Just let 5 Charge (Bet Now: $5.00) jump and run please. His two career best runs, both wins, have been when allowed to roll along on speed and giving nothing else a look in. Not sure they’ve tried to restrain because it clearly hasn’t worked. Resumes in a very winnable race here and the trial leading in was quite good. Hoping they jump and let him run. He’ll just about win if that eventuates.
Can easily make a case that 3 Passage Of Time (Bet Now: $4.60) should have resumed with a win at Randwick. Just got held up and baulked for a run when seemingly full of running and got out late to just miss out on the win. Tricky draw, but has the speed to overcome it and the depth here is similar, perhaps a touch weaker, than what he faced last time. Has to be in the numbers.
Want to give 11 Murillo (Bet Now: $8.50) another look. He made his Australian debut over 1200m on the course proper a fortnight ago and went around as pretty much a barrier trial. Didn’t get clear air at all to let down and it was a bit of an ugly watch if you were on. Think he’s suited up in trip and did trial well leading in, so have to give him another look here against these.
Race 8. (16:05) May Handicap (88) 1400m
8 Star Of The Seas (Bet Now: $3.70) has been up a little while for Chris Waller but gee he’s racing well. Did a power of work over 1400m on the course proper two weeks ago yet kept surging and you can easily make a case that he should have won when third to Mahalangur. All depends what is left in the petrol tank because he’s had a few gutbusters on the bounce now.
4 Albumin (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Gerald Ryan trained grey who comes back to Sydney after a hit and run mission to Caulfield where he got back and worked home okay without really threatening behind Bandipur, who franked the form by winning impressively on Anzac Day, so that reads well for this and with a likely hot speed, hoping he can sit back and have last look.
If he runs up to his recent trial and first up run last from last prep, 2 Articus (Bet Now: $31.00) will go very close. Admittedly it’s been over two year since he has won but this is just about the easiest race he has contested since arriving in Australia. Kris Lees trains this import, who looked outstanding in a trial win over 1200m at Newcastle, leading all the way under Schofield and pretty much dragging him around the track. Looks to have come back well.
Race 9. (16:45) ATC Handicap (78) 1550m
Have to go with the three year old 10 Agassi (Bet Now: $2.40). Far from disgraced two back in the Carbine Club before going this track/distance last Monday where he looked a good thing on paper and under a confident steer from Blake Shinn, despite lumping 62kg, he was far too good for his rivals. Gets really good weight relief this time and lands on speed without doing too much work. Likeable.
Has to carry the weight does 1 Live And Free (Bet Now: $13.00) but he’s got class on his side hasn’t he? John O’Shea trains this promising four year old, who was very good in an unsuitable race over 1400m two weeks ago on the course proper but did make up ground and his late splits were good behind Mahalangur. Is a second up winner, like him up to 1550m…just has to carry the weight.
5 Braces (Bet Now: $34.00) is in a little bit of a purple patch at the moment for the Greg Hickman team. Won well two back at Warwick Farm before racing over 1800m here where he tried quite hard but just found Milseain too good on the day. Was down to run on Anzac Day but has been kept on ice for this, back in trip no issue, he’ll be strong and likely be decent odds.
