An eight race card has been assembled for the Parks track at Morphettville on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres from the 1000m-400m; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race One (12:28) : Nocelle Handicap 1300m:
Big Danger: 4 Red Raider (Bet Now: $2.15) had really confident market support over 1100m on the course proper last Wednesday where he sat off the speed and came with a well timed run but just missed out on the win when a close up second to Fancy Rumble. Looks to have really good upside and up to 1300m is a big tick.
Big Danger: Process of elimination, 7 Dextiny (Bet Now: $3.20) is next pick. Rises sharply in grade from a Clare maiden last start, but that was won by Counterplay and that horse came out and spanked them here last week, so that form reads very well for this. Small field helps and Holder rides. Definite threat now.
Long Shot: 6 Ashady Hussy (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Hussonet filly on debut for the Richard Jolly yard. Hasn’t been seen in public trials but the mare Shady Grove was handy when on song, though better over a longer trip, so how much dash this filly has remains to be seen, but you have to respect the stable.
Race Two (13:03) : Neil Sachse Handicap (82) 2400m:
Back Me: 3 Super Haze (Bet Now: $2.60) should be putting this field away quite comfortably I think. He drops big time in depth after contesting the Port Adelaide Cup last start where he sat on speed and stuck to his guns quite nicely when fifth to stablemate Time To Test. This looks a very winnable race, and on his current form, surely he just wins.
Big Danger: 5 Spanish Halo (Bet Now: $8.00) is on the seven day back up after racing over 1950m here last Saturday where he got a mile back off the pace yet worked home with real purpose behind General Custer. 2400m looks perfect for him, and overall, this is a very thin race, so he has to rate highly here.
Long Shot: 7 Duquessa (Bet Now: $34.00) hasn’t raced for a tick over three weeks since racing in the Mount Gambier Cup where she really struggled on the shifty surface behind the Stakes performed Survived. She is a mare who doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but as I keep saying, this is a thin race and she can bob up for sure.
Race Three (13:38) : Anthony Scopelitis Handicap 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Gold Denari (Bet Now: $6.00) is a smart filly that is first up here for the Kennewell camp. She was touted as a Magic Millions Guineas horse but just didn’t quite measure up in the lead ups. Trial here at the start of May was inconclusive but she does have a very good first up record and won at her lone start at this track.
Big Danger: 5 Breaker Of Chains (Bet Now: $10.00) is an interesting runner here. Resumes for Will Clarken after a four run prep to kick off his career, which ended in the Morphettville Guineas behind Silvera, who has gone on to be a Group l performer. Stable are low flying at the moment and a definite market watch, plus a recent trial was quite good.
Long Shot: 7 Vikings Reward (Bet Now: $12.00) is the big watch here. John Hyam trained three year old who raced three weeks back over 1050m on the course proper where he got back in the run and just stayed there behind Mulder. Sent back to the trials and won at Balaklava last week, and looked pretty good to my eye. Big improver if he finds his best.
Race Four (14:16) : MAC Drink Driving? GROW UP Handicap (64) 1250m:
Back Me: 6 Beautiful Voice (Bet Now: $5.50) is a handy filly for the Stokes yard who is on the quick back up after racing on the course proper last Wednesday where she copped a bit of pressure on speed and tired late. I think with a more economical run here, she will be better off and prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: Will Clarken is one of the best trainers in Australia when it comes to improving tried horses, especially mars, so it’s no surprise that 10 Sudden Wealth (Bet Now: $6.50) has been popular with Sportsbet.com.au punters. The daughter of Time Thief was formerly trained by Paul Murray but was sent to Clarken after winning at Kembla Grange. Had her first run for the stable at Strathalbyn and battled away strongly. Market suggests she will run well here and I have to respect it.
Long Shot: 5 Cool Maverick (Bet Now: $17.00) is a greybeard who is getting on in years but he always bobs up from time to time. He ran a tick over two weeks back at Balaklava where he got off the pace and never really looked likely but stuck on well behind Hazy Lane. Not sure he can win, but a must for exotics.
Race Five (14:56) : Quayclean Handicap (90) 1550m:
Back Me: 6 Snake Charmer (Bet Now: $3.70) on top for me here. This mare trialled up well prior to resuming here last Saturday where she looked a little unlucky not to win, getting held up nearer the inside before getting the gap and dashing to just miss out on picking up Galaxy Gazer. Quick back up looks ideal and up to 1550m is a big tick.
Big Danger: 5 Beluga Blue (Bet Now: $1.80) was out of her depth last start in the R A Lee but despite that, she ran an absolute beauty when running fourth to the star that is Burning Front, making up really good ground nearer the inside. Really good record on the Parks track and being third up, she should be ready fitness wise.
Long Shot: 7 Double Pockets (Bet Now: $23.00) is also on the seven day back up. Ran here last Saturday over 1400m where he got back in the run off the pace and just stayed there without threatening behind Municipality. He was back to 1400m from 1550m, so back up to the latter trip will help his cause.
Race Six (15:36) : Australian Floor Group Handicap (90) 1000m:
Back Me: 2 Tarco (Bet Now: $2.90) is the x factor here. David Jolly trained sprinter who hasn’t raced since resuming in the Oakbank Stakes on Easter Saturday where he got back off the speed and loomed large but had to settle for second to the veteran Riziz. Very good record when racing here and is best when produced fresh.
Big Danger: 1 Karlovasi (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Stakes winning sprinter for the Richard Jolly yard who was far from disgraced last time out down the Flemington straight in the Straight Six when finishing four lengths off the Group l performed Tashbeeh. Fabulous record on the Parks track maps well and is a definite leading contender.
Long Shot: 7 Chapel Road (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Mick Price trained galloper who deserves another crack in town. Callow rode him superbly last time out at Seymour, giving him clear air throughout and once he asked for the big effort, the horse found and drew right away. He can definitely measure up here.
Race Seven (16:16) : Hughes Limousines Handicap (75) 1250m:
Back Me: 8 Hazy Lane (Bet Now: $5.50) is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Richard Jolly camp. She is on the quick back up after racing over 1400m here last weekend where she sat near the speed and looked all over a winner but was nabbed right on the peg by Municipality. Back to 1250m is a big tick and is well in at the weights.
Big Danger: 3 Battle Brewing (Bet Now: $5.00) was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1200m on the course proper a fortnight back where he got off the pace and poked his way through the field to finish off nicely behind Chase The Horizon in a race which carried far more depth than what is engaged here, and that form has been franked. Good record on the Parks track and will improve with the run under the belt.
Long Shot: 1 Justify That (Bet Now: $35.00) returns to SA after having a prep during the Alice Springs Carnival where he ran twice and was far from disgraced on both occasions. He is a nine year old and a veteran of 81 starts, but he still retains a healthy amount of zest for racing, and he is one tough bugger that is never far away.
Race Eight (16:53) : UBET Handicap (70) 1400m:
Back Me: 12 Chosen Angel (Bet Now: $13.00) goes on top for me here in a very tricky race to sort out. This mare ran over 1200m on the course proper last Saturday where she got off the pace and worked home with purpose to run second to Copernicus. That was her first run in nearly six weeks, so up to 1400m looks ideal.
Big Danger: 1 Galaxy Gazer (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the quick back up for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard after racing over 1250m here last Saturday where he was given a lovely ride by LIndop and hit the front soon after straightening, then fought hard to hold off Snake Charmer. Up to 1400m is perfect and is a definite contender.
Long Shot: 15 House Of Wax (Bet Now: $18.00) is a veteran whose best days are probably behind him but he looks to have retained a healthy zest for the caper. He ran over 1250m here last weekend where he got off the speed and looked to travel well but just didn’t quite finish off as well as expected. He will love the step up to 1400m and is a knockout chance at odds.
