The Masters at Ascot wraps up this Saturday for the final Group l of 2016, the Kingston Town Classic (1800m), with a near full field assembled. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres in the straight; True for the remainder.

Race One (15:29) : Amelia Park Beef Handicap (1MW) 1100m:
Back Me: Pretty keen here on 3 Just Act Natural (Bet Now: $2.30). He was a real find earlier in the year, winning three on the bounce in impressive fashion before perhaps racing like a tired horse behind Black Dynamite. Trials leading in have been outstanding, he draws to lead…and probably win.
Big Danger: 1 On Trend (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented gelding that resumes here. He hasn’t been seen since running a close up second to the above average Socially Unique, who of course came out and won the Hannans during the Kalgoorlie Carnival. Trial was good and despite drawing a touch awkwardly, he does sprint well fresh, so he ticks a lot of boxes.
Long Shot: 10 Disco Metal (Bet Now: $9.00) was pretty solid near the top of the betting when resuming over 1200m at the midweeks here a couple of Wednesday’s back and after a lovely steer from Pike, the mare was far too good. Draws horribly here, but if Pike can weave his magic wand, he is right in the game.
Race Two (16:04) : Get The Tabtouch Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $4.50) is a ripper for Dan Morton. She resumed last Saturday where he was afforded every chance by Oliver and she looked home but the swoopers nailed her late. Draws wide, but her natural speed should see that taken care of and her form is superior to anything engaged here.
Big Danger: 4 Gatting (Bet Now: $8.00) is a nippy gelding for the Mcauliffe yard who has won two from two this time, starting off with a Northam maiden before racing over 1100m here a couple of Wednesdays back where Pike rode him an absolute treat on speed and he bolted in. Remains at 1100m, he’s hard fit and has the right racing pattern and will get the drag over courtesy of Dainty Tess.
Long Shot: 11 Speedy Ladidi (Bet Now: $13.00) also comes through that race Dainty Tess contested last Saturday and I thought her effort in defeat was pretty good considering she was pretty much unwanted in betting and yet despite that, she raced on speed and fought on strongly to be beaten just over half a length into fourth position. Draws to get run of the race stuff here and I could entertain her at a price.
Race Three (16:44) : Penfolds Handicap (66+) 2100m:
Back Me: 1 The Forgotten One (Bet Now: $4.40) is form stayer at this level in WA at the moment. He has won his past three outings, the latest coming over 2200m here a fortnight back where he had the sweet run just off the speed before presenting on the turn and putting the field away easily. Rises slightly in depth and draws wide, but it’s hard to ignore him.
Big Danger: 7 Mosserati (Bet Now: $3.40) is the very interesting runner. He ran over 1500m here a fortnight back and to the eye he looked the winner in normal speed but the photo went the way of Pike and the heavily backed Cronkite. Up to 2200m is a big query, but ability wise, he probably has these covered. 2200m is the only question mark but I’ll leave that in the hands of D Oliver.
Long Shot: 6 Our Mate Al (Bet Now: $5.50) ran second to The Forgotten One in that race mentioned above where he had the run of the race off the speed tracking that horse up in the run and he seemingly had his chance when presented. Just seemingly couldn’t match it with him staying wise. He actually meets the winner 0.5kg worse off at the weights, so I doubt he can turn the tables but he should run well.
Race Four (17:24) : Tabtouch Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic 1400m:
Back Me: Giving 3 Lusaha (Bet Now: $3.60) another look here. He was very game in defeat last time out in the WA Guineas (1600m) where he did a power of work on speed and really had no right to finish as close as he did. It will be interesting to see how he bounces off that. If he has overcome it, i think he beats these.
Big Dange: 5 Chin Strap (Bet Now: $8.00) is probably the best maiden racing in WA at the moment, so despite being eligible for easier races, I think he can measure up here. He ran at the midweeks here last time out where he started odds and after getting a fair way back, he just couldn’t reel in Gatting. Looking for this trip now and he should just about be ready fitness wise.
Long Shot: 9 Stored Energy (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented filly that looks ready to tackle the 1400m now after running over 1200m in the Placid Ark two weeks back where she sat back in the run and closed off her race with real purpose to run third. Looks ready for this and she will be strong late. Leading contender.
Race Five (18:00) : Crown Towers Handicap (72+) 1000m:
Back Me: 9 The River (Bet Now: $9.00) ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and was back in trip after racing over 1400m the start prior where he looked the winner most of the way down the straight but he just lacked the killer blow to win and had to settle for a close up fourth. Gets the services of Douglas Whyte and though drawn awkwardly, he is right in the game.
Big Danger: 2 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $4.60) looks one of the hardest to beat here after contesting a couple of lead ups to the Winterbottom, starting off in the Prince Of Wales before being three lengths of Vega Magic in the Colonel Reeves. She’ll do no work from the soft gate here and with a hot tempo, she should get her chance to ambush late.
Long Shot: 4 Kennocha (Bet Now: $10.00) has been given a four week freshen up since racing over 1100m here where he had the charmed run behind the tempo and raced like a tired horse when down the track behind Delicate Miss. His best racing is saved for when he is produced fresh and Pike jumps back on. Might be worth watching the market.
Race Six (18:35) : James Boags Premium Handicap (72+) 1400m:
Back Me: 4 Dendee (Bet Now: $4.40) was backed as if she was Black caviar when resuming here last Saturday and you could tell halfway home she was the one to beat and when Clark eased her to the outside, she put the race away in a couple of strides. She is a second up winner, there should be upside and now she gets the services of Hugh Bowman. Despite more depth here, she rates quite highly for me here.
Big Danger: 3 Universal Law (Bet Now: $4.60) will appreciate the drop in depth after contesting the Carbine Club last time out where he sat back in a slowly run race and really had no winning chance when down the track behind stablemate Chocolate Holic. This looks more his level and despite drawing wide, Pike is back on and the tempo should be more genuine here. Major threat on his best form.
Long Shot: 1 Express Service (Bet Now: $34.00) is the very interesting runner here. Mcauliffe trained seven year old who has clearly had his injury issues given he has had one run in two years, that resulting in a sixth to Detection at Belmont. The trials leading in have been pretty solid and you always have to keep a watchful eye when it comes to these horses returning off long lay offs.
Race Seven (19:15) : Ascend Sales Trophies Jungle Dawn Classic 1400m:
Bacl Me: I can’t see anything beating 3 Cosmic Storm (Bet Now: $2.70). She was the hottest tip all day when resuming in the Jungle Mist a fortnight back but all looked lost when she was three wide and struggling but once she straightened up and balanced, gee she savaged the line to win. Can only see upside and she only rises 1kg in weight.
Big Danger: 5 I’m Feeling Lucky (Bet Now: $6.00) is a stablemate of the top tip who resumes here. Best form is over slightly further as we saw last time in but gee she was consistent and very good in winning several races. Lark Hill trial win was very good and it might be worth watching the market with her.
Long Shot: 11 Meteoroid (Bet Now: $9.00) was given a peach steer from Mitchell in that race mentioned above and it really deserved the blacktype win but she just had no answer to the finishing burst produced by Cosmic Storm. Not sure she can turn the tables but she should acquit herself quite nicely I think.
Race Eight (20:00) : Peters Investments Kingston Town Classic 1800m:
Back Me: I am surprised that $15+ was offered for 4 Kawi (Bet Now: $5.00) here pre the Railway because he was always going to improve when he came back to WFA. In saying that, his effort in the Railway was an absolute ripper with no luck at all in the straight when appearing to have plenty to offer. Should have perhaps run a place, but no match for Scales Of Justice who had a significant weight pull on him. That is reversed here, this has always been his target race, WFA suits him…I honestly can’t see anything from the Railway beating him.
Big Danger: 16 Perfect Reflection (Bet Now: $4.40) was well backed to win the Railway off the back of her brilliant win in the Lee Steere but perhaps the slow tempo mid race just took away her lethal finishing burst against quality horses who also have a turn of foot. Still, it was a very good run and a super indicator that she is back to defend her title in this race from 12 months back where she beat stablemate and gun mare Delicacy. On weights, she’ll struggle to beat Kawi, but her closing speed is superior to just about anything else engaged here.
Long Shot: 11 Vanbrugh (Bet Now: $12.00) is the horse to keep an eye for. He doesn’t come through the Railway so he doesn’t meet Kawi worse off at the weights. He comes to Perth after contesting the Emirates during the Flemington Carnival and was far from disgraced behind Awesome Rock. Waller knows what it takes to win races on the road and this horse has class.
Race Nine (20:40) : Presets Performing Perth Cup December 31 Handicap (1MW) 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Pinzu (Bet Now: $4.20) was heavily backed to win last time out and if you did back him, you’d have a right to feel a tad sick because he just didn’t appear to get any luck at a vital stage when appearing to have plenty to offer when a narrow third to Our Mate Al, who has run well since. Third up now, so he should be ready fitness wise and is a major threat with Bowman steering.
Big Danger: 4 Sasso’s Circus (Bet Now: $9.00) ran over 1500m here a fortnight ago and gee he was a real eye catcher late in the piece when finishing off his race hard out wide to run a close up third to Cronkite and Mosserati. Again draws wise, but gets weight relief via the claim for Johnston-Porter, and like the stablemate Pinzu, he is third up and should be ready to fire.
Long Shot: 9 Point (Bet Now: $9.00) used to be with Adam Durrant but is now with Team Williams after a mixed prep during the Autumn/Winter, where he failed to live up to early hype/expectations. Looked quite sharp in a Belmont trial win on November 7 and Pike steers. Draws to get the run of the race and can sprint well fresh. Rates highly.
