A strong nine race card has been assembled for Eagle Farm this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:43) TAB Handicap 1000m
I think speed/class gets 1 Niedorp (Bet Now: $3.60) home first up. Tony Gollan trains this filly, who placed in both runs during the Winter Carnival. First up ran third to Perudo in the Bill Carter before going to the Oxlade where she ran third to Diamond Thunder in what I think will be a good form race moving forward. Trial win was sharp and I think short course racing is her go.
The Michael Costa team is humming along nicely at the moment and they have 8 Sukwhinder (Bet Now: $12.00) first up here. This filly had two runs in the Autumn to start her career, winning impressively on debut at Grafton before going to the Inglis 2YO race during the Scone Carnival when midfield behind Spilt. Looked to trial well on Monday at Beaudesert and always like horses trialling/racing within a week.
Interesting to see how 9 Jazz Queen (Bet Now: $51.00) goes. This girl hasn’t raced since breaking her maiden status over 1100m at Gatton in a race which didn’t appear strong on paper but the form prior reads well enough. Trialled behind Niedorp and wasn’t asked to much. Stable is having a good little run in recent weeks in town and always have to watch the market with the stable.
Race 2. (12:18) BRC Memberships Handicap 1000m
I think there’s a really good bet here in the shape of 4 Single Bullet (Bet Now: $3.50) and potentially some outstanding placement from Gary Portelli. Thought there was plenty of merit in his run on the Kenso track two weeks ago when well back off the speed and finding the line well late behind All Too Royal. There is forecast for rain later in the week, but Eagle Farm drains pretty well. He’s hard to beat if we get a dry deck.
1 Whypeeo (Bet Now: $2.25)…gee he’s becoming frustrating. I think you can make a case that he should have won at this track/distance two weeks ago but like he has done in recent starts, he’s been tardy away and thrown away his normal racing pattern of sitting near the speed and sustaining. Convinced he’s going well. Just hope he can jump clean, then we’ll see his best, which is clearly good enough to beat these.
5 Tisani Tomso (Bet Now: $8.50) is an absolute beauty for Kevin Kemp. He comes through the Invincible Gangsta race from two weeks back here when on speed and giving a decent enough kick but just tired late and had to settle for third. His best chance will be if he leads, is left alone and is allowed to roll. If that eventuates, I think he can cause some problems at odds.
Race 3. (12:53) Country Music Raceday Handicap (75) 2400m
7 Ocean Addict (Bet Now: $2.90) looks well suited here. He was a drifter in betting over 2200m here two weeks ago as the big money came late for Ilwendo and the punters got it right as that galloper spanked his rivals, including Ocean Addict, but this guy didn’t turn it up and was good in defeat. Less depth this time around, he looks one of the hardest to beat against this lot.
4 Kopella (Bet Now: $9.50) is a little query at a staying trip but she’s in form. On the quick back up after winning on Sunday at the Sunny Coast over 1800m when getting the nice sit just off the speed and though she took a little while to get into her work, she was strong late, telling me a staying trip would be no issue for her, and Steve Tregea has good success with his runners when they back up.
8 Miss Fraser (Bet Now: $20.00) is going really well at the moment for Kris Lees and I think she’s earned a crack at city level. She gave them a galloping lesson two back in what looked a pretty weak race at Coffs before taking on some handy enough stayers at Grafton last time and her change up speed saw her beat an in form Winged Poet. Can sit on speed, can take a sit, handles all conditions…bit to like about her.
Race 4. (13:28) Big Screen On The Green Plate (Class 6) 1815m
I’m going to take a punt on 9 The Bandit (Bet Now: $18.00), formerly with the Freedman camp but is now with Chris Meagher. This guy hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing at Randwick where he was wide no cover throughout in a total forgive behind Matowi. He is a horse much better suited on firmer footing, and at his best, he can easily measure up here. Change of scenery, new training methods…could spark him into action.
5 Magnufighter (Bet Now: $4.40) looks one of the hardest to beat. Gary Duncan trains this gelding, who was well tried late when racing over the Doomben mile three weeks ago when off the speed before getting clear air late and surging to the line to just get the job done in a tight go to the line. He is a winner at 2000m in the past so up to the 1800m here should be no drama.
Up to 1800m should suit the Tony Gollan trained 11 Perfect Witness (Bet Now: $11.00). Thought he was good first up at the Gold Coast behind Alaskan Sun before going to the mile here two weeks ago when ridden near the speed and sticking on okay without being a threat behind Looks Like Elvis. 1800m should be fine for him provided he is ridden more conservatively.
Race 5. (14:03) Ariat Country Music Rodeo Handicap 1400m
9 So Spirited (Bet Now: $3.80) deserves a crack at this kind of race. He was scratched from a similar recently and instead Steve O’Dea sent him around in a Class 5 at Ipswich last Wednesday where he looked a good thing on paper and was ridden accordingly by Steph Thornton, sitting out the back before peeling wide and it was a pretty soft kill. He can measure up here for sure.
5 Fortensky (Bet Now: $3.20) is bursting to win a race but just keeps finding one or two better. Ran last Saturday at Randwick and stuck to the task very well in defeat when fourth to Sweet Deal in what I think will be a strong form race. Gets really good weight relief this time around and drops big time in depth. I think he gets a great chance to put a win on the board.
It’s been a while between drinks for 1 Sovereign Nation (Bet Now: $6.50) but if ever he’s going to win another race, he gets a golden opportunity here. He ran in a similar race at this track/distance two weeks ago where he was a tad held up in the straight and it cost him a bit of momentum, but he wouldn’t have won, finishing third to Kubis. Depth clearly not as strong this time around…gee he gets his chance.
Race 6. (14:42) Melbourne Cup Day @ Eagle Farm Handicap 1000m
1 Jagged Edge (Bet Now: $2.05) is a talented animal resuming for Stuart Kendrick. This bloke won his first two starts in good style, including the Listed Dalrello Stakes, before finishing midfield in the Champagne Classic and was sent for a spell. Sharp trial win at the Sunny Coast to tune up for his return and stable is having a decent run at the moment with their three year olds.
The trial perverts will be all over 4 Ruuca (Bet Now: $3.20). He debuted at Ipswich back on April 24 and was just too good for his rivals on a wet track. On paper, it didn’t look a strong race, but three winners have come from it, and his Gold Coast trial, visually was outstanding, but on the clock, it was quite slow, so could be soft in condition fresh, but stable is going well.
The race somewhat falls away from the first two. Next best for me is 9 Eeyore (Bet Now: $16.00), who was good two back at the Sunny Coast behind a nice type in Okeechobee before going to Beaudesert when leading and spanking her rivals in an impressive all the way win. Gets only 51kg after the claim, likely lands on speed and will give a sight. Class is the query.
Race 7. (15:22) Moet & Chandon Gentleman's Club Handicap (70) 1200m
I’m quite keen here on 9 Rabbit Hunter (Bet Now: $6.50). He resumed in a Class 3 over 1000m at the Sunny Coast just under two weeks ago and it was ugly if you were on. He was under pressure in the run but picked up in the straight, was going for an inside split, about to burst through, but the gap closed and that was the end of his chances. Should have won, and while that race looked a bit weak on paper, time was good and the form from last prep as a 3YO just reads so well.
11 Francisca (Bet Now: $4.60) is a talented mare for Steve O’Dea that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since April 27 over 1400m here when down the track behind the then in form Angel Dane. Been over a year since she has won, but has got ability and liked the way she went in a recent trial. Usually sprints well fresh and stable is going well so keep an eye on the market.
If they go hard in front, 13 Drumadoir (Bet Now: $8.50) can certainly finish over the top. Lorraine Erhart trains this mare, who hasn’t been seen since struggling to handle the bog track at the Gold Coast (Metro) behind See The Master. Been given a good break and moved well to the line in a recent Doomben trial behind Capital Connection. Has a booming finish on her when right.
Race 8. (16:02) brc.com.au Plate (Class 3) 1400m
8 Our Girl Silke (Bet Now: $3.80) is nearing her D-Day. Outstanding late splits first up behind Six Sigma before racing at this track/distance two weeks ago where she was really well backed to win the race but I thought she had her chance and on face value was disappointing behind Sienna Rose. Third up, so she should be hard fit now, remaining at Class 3 level…she’s well placed.
14 Highway (Bet Now: $9.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. This former Sydney sider had her first run for Tony Gollan at this track/distance a fortnight back where she closed off with real purpose from the back to run third to Sienna Rose in an excellent start to her life in the Sunshine State. Reckon she wants further now, but hard to ignore what she did first up.
3 Dissolution (Bet Now: $15.00) is a huge query here. This bloke has had a few homes but is now under the care of David Vandyke. He hasn’t raced since May 17 at Ipswich when a well supported favourite but was down the track behind Starkers. Been given a good break and has had two pleasing trials in readiness for his resumption. Market will be the guide but certainly has the class/quality to win.
Race 9. (16:42) Events @ BRC Handicap (Class 6) 1400m
6 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $6.00) gets another chance. He was hard in the market when resuming over 1200m here a fortnight ago but just found the trip a bit sharp fresh and the leader Tisani Magic didn’t go hard in front, making it hard from those off the speed to make up significant ground. Really came into his own when stepping up to 1400-1600m last prep so may need one more run but has enough quality.
What happened to 1 Auerbach (Bet Now: $15.00) last start? His form this prep had been excellent, which is why he was well backed when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago but he was beaten on the turn and ended up running last, one of the worst runs of his career. Nothing found in the Stewards Report, so I think you just have to pen it and give him another chance.
Liam Birchley has 24 Yeahnah (Bet Now: $31.00) flying. Beat all bar Six Sigma two back at Doomben in a tight go before racing over 1200m here two weeks ago and sticking on strongly in defeat when a close up third to the handy sprinter The Tenor. I reckon 1200m at Saturday level sees him right out, but with a soft trip from the gate, he should be fine and is one of the leading chances.
