Wyong will host their biggest race day this Friday where it is Wyong Cup Day, with the 2100m feature attracting a strong field. The Mona Lisa (1350m) is also filled with quality. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:50) Senpos Maiden Plate 1200m
6 Scepter Of Power (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of Redoute’s Choice on debut for Kris Lees. This bloke has been given plenty of time to prepare for his start at the races, trialling way back in September last year and has had five trials since, the latest on July 27 at Newcastle when finishing a close up third and looking to move nicely. Bowman booked a good lead.
7 Shinju (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Team Snowden trained gelding who showed a bit of promise in the Autumn without winning. Spelled, trialled well and resumed at Kembla where he was well backed but couldn’t quite get the job done when third to Reginae. Should improve off that and showed enough to suggest he’s got ability and can win this with luck.
5 Rock (Bet Now: $3.50) is a son of Pierro debuting for the Hawkes camp. He has had four trials throughout his career, with two of those coming this prep. The latest of those trials came last Monday where he ran fourth to the above average Wagner and looked to move nicely. I think the market will tell you how he’ll go.
Race 2. (13:25) Biochem Water Maiden Plate 1200m
Trials aren’t everything but it’s been hard not to be impressed by the way 7 Prophet’s Thumb (Bet Now: $2.80) has been trialling, where she has been getting back and made up many lengths without really being touched. Looks a nice type and from the inside draw, hopefully she can somewhere near the pace. Great bet for mine.
9 Veranes, (Bet Now: $2.50) on her best form, would be winning. How can you trust her though because she’s been ordinary in recent times. Given every chance last time at Warwick Farm but didn’t fire a shot behind Osorno in what did look a strong race. Been given a little break and trialled well enough last week at Warwick Farm.
5 Enfilade (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Godolphin filly on debut for the James Cummings team. This daughter of Dawn Approach has had two trials in readiness for her first start, the latest coming at Randwick a couple of weeks back when third to Carambola. Bred to get a trip, but you always have to respect the stable with their first starters.
Race 3. (14:05) HC Group Handicap (64) 1600m
Looks a lovely race for the Paul Messara trained 9 Panzerfaust (Bet Now: $2.00). Looked a good thing beat two back at Muswellbrook before racing in a Highway at Randwick where the bias was just against her I thought when fifth to Butchoy. Should be hard fit now fourth up from a spell and she does have more upside than most engaged.
8 Velocano (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Marc Conners trained mare who looks well suited back against this lot. Looked a very strong Class One last time at Newcastle with the race won by Sunreel, a mare who looks very capable of winning in town and the form around her reads well. Has placed here before and can bounce back.
1 The Iron Maiden (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Jeff Englebrecht trained mare who has been in work forever it seems like but gee she’s racing well. Strung together a couple of nice wins at Gosford prior to a couple of solid runs at Warwick Farm. She then ran during the Taree Carnival where she got too far back on a leaders track. Tends to save her best for the home track, so she can bounce back.
Race 4. (14:40) Bishop Collins Accountants Handicap (Class 2) 1200m
10 Lady Of ShalottΒ (Bet Now: $7.50) is a handy looking filly for Kris Lees who is first up here. Debuted with a sharp win in the Miss Finland at Muswellbrook before going to the Woodlands during the Scone Carnival and running third to a really good one in Pretty In Pink. Two trials leading in have caught the eye and she does find a very winnable assignment fresh.
11 Roman Typhoon (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Jan Bowen trained gelding who is mixing his form at the moment but on his best form, he can definitely beat this lot. Ran over 1300m at Newcastle last time where he had a suck run off the pace and once he popped into clear, he looked the winner but just didn’t finish it off behind Lunar Spin. Perhaps back in trip he can bounce back.
3 Blowing Kisses (Bet Now: $8.00) can certainly win this if she brings her best form. John Thompson trains this mare, who ran at Canterbury last time where she really had no hope of winning given she was back near last on a track which has suited those on speed recently. Did a good job to get as close as she did to Our Dasha. Can bounce back here for sure.
Race 5. (15:20) Springtime Handicap (74) 1100m
Very much looking forward to seeing 8 Smart Melody (Bet Now: $1.55) return. No doubt she’s a high class filly and has the potential to win a Group l if her two career wins are any guide, winning by big spaces and smashing the clock. Loved the way she went in a recent Newcastle trial and she appears ready to rock and roll.
3 Jericho (Bet Now: $16.00) is a son of Smart Missile resuming for the Snowden team. He had just the one run in the Spring of 2016, which came in the Heritage when down the track behind Guard Of Honour. Been given nearly two years off, so has clearly had issues, but his two trials leading in have been quite encouraging.
2 Parlay Vous (Bet Now: $17.00) is a son of Jimmy Choux resuming for the John O’Shea stable. This bloke had a four run Summer/Autumn prep, which saw him win impressively at Goulburn and did place at Gosford behind multiple city winner Star Of Monsoon. He is a good fresh and has trialled well leading in. Doubt he wins but top three yes.
Race 6. (15:55) Mona Lisa Stakes 1350m
Cracking edition of the Mona Lisa but just siding with 7 Shumookh (Bet Now: $2.15), who resumes for the WaterBott team. This girl hasn’t raced since the Phar Lap where she attempted to lead all the way but just couldn’t see the 1500m out behind Unforgotten. Did a ripping job in her first prep and her two trials leading in have been quite good.
4 Savatiano (Bet Now: $4.40) is a daughter of Street Cry that resumes for the James Cummings team. This girl had a two run Autumn prep and gee she was impressive in both outings, winning first up during the Scone Carnival before being even more impressive at Randwick. Like what I have seen in her two trials and I love horses ending a prep on a high.
10 Smart Amelia (Bet Now: $12.00) looks to have really turned the corner since joining the Bjorn Baker team. Resumed with an impressive win at Rosehill and in two runs subsequent has been quite good without much luck, the latest seeing her out the back in a slowly run Toy Show won by Egyptian Symbol. Looks well placed here.
Race 7. (16:35) Wyong Cup 2100m
I’m happy to have something each way on 1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $19.00). Had something on him when he raced in the Premiers Cup on Saturday where the class found him out, but I didn’t mind his last 150m when hitting the line well enough. Won this race last year and for mine 12 months on, he’s going better.
4 Harper’s Choice (Bet Now: $4.80) looks one of the key threats. Six weeks between runs for Gerald Ryan when he won the Prelude to this race a fortnight back, getting the sweet steer under Jason Collett and the gelding proved too good. Can only see him improve off that and the extra distance should be beneficial.
6 Dark Eyes (Bet Now: $10.00) will be on speed and giving his all. That’s what he did in the Premiers Cup at Rosehill on Saturday where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a good kick but the class just found him out late when fourth to Avilius. Hard fit now, should lead and the bit of give in the track should help his cause.
Race 8. (17:15) Da Vinci Handicap (64) 1300m
5 Nai’a (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Lonhro mare resuming for James Cummings. She has promised a fair bit right throughout her career but hasn’t quite fulfilled her potential. In saying that, she has looked quite good in a couple of trials leading up to her turn. Looks to have come right on and keen to see what she does here.
11 Algaffaal (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained colt who resumed in a decent 3YO race at the Canterbury midweeks where he didn’t seem entirely happy around the circuit but stuck on well enough behind Nuke. Good little weight pull on that horse here, fitter, McEvoy on…there is a bit to like.
4 So Bizarre (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Tracey Bartley trained gelding who just got the job done first up over 1100m here in a maiden as a $1.30 pop before going to Taree where he was on speed, lumped 61kg and did a good job in defeat I thought when third to Soul Revival. Gets weight relief and third up, should be hard fit.
