Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out 6.5 metres from the 800m-400m; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:17) Countdown To Carnival Handicap (80) 2220m
5 Savwell (Bet Now: $2.05) is a promising son of Savabeel for the David Vandyke team who ran over the mile here a few weeks back and to my eye ran his race in patches when third to Constantine, coming off the bit early, looking to be going nowhere but picked up again and was really good late. Think he wants further and he gets it.
1 Xebec (Bet Now: $2.50) is showing a bit more heart in Queensland compared to his form in Sydney and I think he gets a great chance to get a win on the board. He ran over 2200m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and if you were on, it was a hard watch. Doubt he was going to win but he would have gone close to beating stablemate Exoteric had he got clear running at the right time. Doubt he’ll get boxed in this time around.
3 Magnatune (Bet Now: $13.00) comes through the Exoteric race at the Gold Coast two weeks ago. I thought he tried hard in the run and found the line well enough albeit never really a winning threat. Has an awful record at Doomben but his recent efforts here haevn’t been too bad. Knockout chance with the right run.
Race 2. (13:52) Starlight Family Raceday Handicap 2040m
3 Improvise (Bet Now: $3.50) should be putting this field away I think. Looks beautifully place by Chris Waller. Ran on a bog at Gosford (Metro) last Wednesday where she didn’t look happy at all on the wet track and tight turns but was sound in defeat behind Chilly Cha Cha. Up to 2040m and back in depth looks an ideal recipe for success.
12 Naked (Bet Now: $6.00) is a seven start maiden for the Barry Lockwood team but I think he can run well here. He was 1300-1800 in the Epic Rant race at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and loomed large to win but couldn’t quite see it out when running third to the Michael Costa runner. Now he has the 1800m run under the belt, that should toughen him up for this assignment.
4 Oh Why (Bet Now: $8.00) is a progressive type for the Steve O’Dea team who ran a huge race in defeat a fortnight back over 1800m at the Gold Coast, doing a power of work on speed and fighting on gamely behind the in form Epic Rant. On that run, I think he will have no issue with the 2040m, he has upside and stable is flying.
Race 3. (14:27) Makers Mark Carnival Ball Handicap 1200m
3 Miss Sara (Bet Now: $4.20) found her right race here three weeks back at the 1350m and aided by an aggressive ride late in the piece from Lloyd, the Les Ross trained filly proved too good and got the maiden win out of the way. Back to 1200m is the little query, but if they go hard, she’ll be the one flashing late.
10 Keirabella (Bet Now: $5.50) is a daughter of More Than Ready who resumes for the Matty Dunn team. This girl debuted here back in November and was far from disgraced behind a good one in Blue Book. Been given a good break and has trialled up well at the Gold Coast in readiness for her return. Definite market watch.
6 Sesar (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Sebring on debut for the Steve O’Dea camp. I really like what I have seen from this horse at the trials, placing firstly before winning over the 1000m here a couple of weeks back in good time relative to the day. Been given a good grounding for his debut and I think he can run a ripper.
Race 4. (15:02) Sky Racing Handicap (2MW) 1200m
6 Final Zero (Bet Now: $4.40) is a quality mare for the Michael Lakey team who trialled up well prior to resuming here there weeks back and really, she was dreadful I thought behind Mr Marbellouz, beaten 17 lengths. Ordered back to the trials and she was back on track with a smart win in good time. If she brings her best, she’s right in this.
8 Diamonds Are was a notable drifter in betting when racing on the bog here three weeks back and he ran accordingly after sitting on speed, dropping out to run an absolute howler behind the heavily backed Givus A Cuddle. Hopefully gets firmer footing, weight relief now and senior jock takes over.
Taking a chance on 3 De Villiers (Bet Now: $4.50), a former North Queensland non tab horse who is now with Ben Currie. This bloke has won 10 of his 19 career outings, winning his last five before being sent to Currie. His best form is over slightly further, but Currie is one of the best in Queensland at improving these tried horses. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 5. (15:42) Weddings At BRC Handicap 1200m
3 Pah Terie (Bet Now: $6.00) is a handy son of Show A Heart that resumes for the Kris Lees team. Has only won the one race from six outings but it did come over the 1350m in his 2YO days. Two trials leading in have been quite good back home in NSW and there looks to be intent to run well first up, so I’d watch the market and see what it does.
6 Coral Bay (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Stuart Kendrick trained three year old who was solid in betting when resuming in the 3YO Jewel a fortnight back at the Gold Coast and I thought he closed off quite well late in the piece in what was an on pace dominated affair won by Sista Act. Look for him to get back again and wind up.
10 Protest (Bet Now: $21.00) is a quality filly that resumes for the Guy camp and is heading down the Oaks path. Whatever she does here, she will improve on, but she does have a touch of class about her and she can produce a booming finale if she gets conditions to suit. Trial was good and she’ll be quite strong late.
Race 6. (16:22) Michelle Elkin Birthday Handicap 1050m
1 Dal Cielo…(Bet Now: $4.00) if he behaves and if is anywhere near right, he’ll be winning. He might be a barrier rogue but one thing we know he does have is an enormous amount of talent, enough to take care of these. But it just all depends how he jumps, or even still, if he jumps. He didn’t jump fresh at Warwick Farm behind Fickle Folly. Two trials since have been good…just have to take the risk.
8 Tiyatrolani (Bet Now: $3.40) is a quality mare that resumes for the Tony Gollan camp. This girl hasn’t raced since June 17 last year when racing at Ipswich (Metro) and running a game second to the above average mare With A Promise. Been given a really good break and trialled up well here on March 13. Flies fresh also.
4 In His Stride (Bet Now: $8.00) had been racing in poor form so it was good to see him bounce back into the winners list last time out over the short course at the Sunny Coast, with the drop in grade/depth proving timely for the Stakes winner. Not sure Doomben is his track, but if they go silly in front, he’ll be the one flashing.
Race 7. (17:02) Megaport Plate (Class 3) 1200m
14 River Racer (Bet Now: $2.30) is the big watch . Quality daughter of Hidden Dragon that resumes for the Les Ross team. She’s blacktype class when on her game so Class 3 grade here looks an ideal starting point. Looked great in a trial here on March 13, she draws a lovely barrier and with only 52.5kg on her back, she looks the winner.
D-Day here for 6 Mogador. He has promised so much throughout his career, especially when with Godolphin. Once upon a time he was a future Group l horse but now here he is in a Class 3. In saying that, his effort last time out in the Goldmarket was a beauty behind Raido after getting a mile back in the run. If he’s close enough on the turn, he’ll take some beating.
2 King Lear (Bet Now: $6.50) faces his toughest challenge to date but he looks a promising horse for the Tony Newing camp. Loved the way he let down to win last time out at the Gold Coast, booming down the middle under McGuren to win impressively. Was nominated for the Kembla Provincial Championship Qualifier so stable must have a good opinion of him.
Race 8. (17:37) BRC Merchandise Handicap 1350m
I think this race is all about 4 Zumbelina and where she is at, because if she is anywhere near right, she’ll be winning. Placed at the Gold Coast (Metro) before being freshened up and heading back to Sydney where she was fair in the Triscay before failing behind Osborne Bulls. Drops miles in depth here. Just not sure where she is at, so market/yard will be the guide.
3 Fortensky (Bet Now: $2.90) is an absolute beauty for the Chris Waller team. He hasn’t run a bad race for a long time and is always around the money. That was the case three weeks back at this track/distance when second to arguably one of the best horses Queensland has to offer, Niccanova. That reads really well for this.
7 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Scott Morrisey trained gelding who was a complete drifter in betting when resuming in the Goldmarket at the Gold Coast a fortnight back but despite that, he ran a near career best with a close up third to Raido, beaten a neck. Goes very well second, likes Doomben, good record at the 1350m…ticks plenty of boxes.
Race 9. (18:15) Gallopers Sports Club Handicap (75) 1350m
8 Lyricist (Bet Now: $6.00) looks the one to beat. This mare hasn’t raced for over a month since scoring a narrow but impressive win over this trip at Ipswich when coming with a well timed run from the back and finishing best to score. She is a mare who goes well on the fresh side and this isn’t a strong race at all.
12 Char Char (Bet Now: $16.00) is a son of Charge Forward who has come back in super order for the Chris Anderson team. Lovely ride from Jeff Lloyd got him home a fortnight back at the Gold Coast, diving through late nearer the inside and outgunning Il Riccio near the peg. Got some really good form around him and rates highly.
13 Awake The Stars is a mare for the Toby Edmonds camp who is two for two this time in. Both runs have come over 1400m on her home track at the Gold Coast and each time she has led all the way, showing really good grit in the straight when strongly challenged. Bit more depth but she’s very likeable.
