The best day of racing for Sydney this Spring comes around this Saturday where it is Epsom Handicap Day, nine races, eight blacktype, three at Group l level. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

8 Invincible Lad (Bet Now: $8.50) is a well bred colt for Triple Crown and Team Snowden who looked very good in his trial at Canterbury. Led most of the way bar the final 75m when Heimel gathered it in, but he did it under a hold and he spaced the rest in fast time. Looks ready made and should take some beating.

Danger

1 Bondi (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Snitzel for Team Snowden and China Horse Club who trialled up really well at Canterbury at the officials. Did everything right under Hugh Bowman, leading all the way to win by over a length without really being extended. Looks talented and should run well.

Long Shot

7 Santos (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of I Am Invincible for the Waterhouse/Bott team who should run well here. He trialled back in early September at Rosehill where he did plenty wrong, was under riding, but kept finding under Parr and won well in the end. Has to improve off that, but you always have to respect the stable.

6 Witherspoon (Bet Now: $4.00) is a $500,000 purchase for Brad Widdup who looks hard to beat. This daughter of Exceed And Excel bolted up to win a Canterbury trial over 900m in fast time. She was placed under pressure but what I liked is that she quickened and appeared to do everything right.

Danger

2 Bold Arial (Bet Now: $7.00) is a daughter of I Am Invincible for the Waterhouse/Bott team who won her trial well, albeit in slow time. She was tucked in behind the speed before Hippo gave her clear and though she wandered a bit, she let down nicely when under pressure, and that is a big tick for these early races. They find when pressured.

Long Shot

10 Greyt Love (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Denman filly for Bjorn Baker who looks well educated and should run well here. She ran behind Witherspoon in a trial at Canterbury where she got back, railed up and worked into the clear before finishing off nicely under little pressure to run second. Interesting to see what the market does.

Race 3. (13:30) Schweppes Dulcify Quality 1600m

6 Langley (Bet Now: $4.20) for me in a dartboard race. Not sure he beat much in breaking his maiden at Kembla Grange last time out over 1500m, but you had to like the way he knuckled down to the task under Avdulla and the margin he put on them late, and the time was similar to that of Legal Girl over the same track/trip. Has the upside and looking for the mile.

Danger

2 Sambro (Bet Now: $3.50) just found the class a bit rich first up in the Ming Dynasty behind Addictive Nature before racing over the 1550m at Canterbury where he had a suck run behind the speed and once he got clear he loomed large but stablemate Fortensky, a hard, tough, seasoned campaigner, was too good. That should bring this horse right on.

Long Shot

7 Ataraxia (Bet Now: $5.50) put them away with a bit in hand I thought when resuming on the Beaumont track at Newcastle before going to the Warwick Farm mile last Wednesday where he was a hard fav, near odds on at one point, and gee he was a big flop behind Lead Choreographer. That was against the older horses and he was 1350m to the mile, so perhaps the second up syndrome. Third up bounce back is on the cards.

Race 4. (14:05) Ilve Appliance Hill Stakes 1800m

Back Me

1 Sense Of Occasion (Bet Now: $6.00) is the class runner of the field so I will lean his way. He resumed in the Chelmsford four weeks back here and I think you have to forgive him for the below par effort given the race shape and how quick Red Excitement made it. Was out of his comfort zone and couldn’t come on. Been freshened up and trialled up nicely last week at Gosford.

Danger

10 Perfect Rhyme (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Ron Leemon trained mare who got a pass mark for sure first up in the Toy Show behind Sweed Redemption before going to the Tibbie at Newcastle where she worked home with real purpose late but had to settle for a narrow second to Zanbagh. Up to the 1800m third up is ideal and despite being at WFA, she is the one with upside, fresh legs and a turn of foot.

Long Shot

7 Classic Uniform (Bet Now: $7.50) will appreciate coming back to 1800m I feel. He ran in the Kingston Town (2000m) last time out and just copped a bit too much pressure midway through the contest. To his credit, he fought hard and had the lead with 150m to go but was bloused late. That hard 2000m effort should leave him cherry ripe for this 1800m contest.

Race 5. (14:40) Flight Stakes 1600m

Back Me

If she handles the third week of racing in a row and is ridden quiet, 1 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $4.80) wins here. Ridden too close in the Tea Rose before backing up last weekend in the Golden Rose where she was ridden completely cold by Collett and you had to like the way she finished off behind Trapeze Artist. Back to her own age/sex, and with that hard grounding, she should prove hard to beat.

Danger

I had put the pen through 2 Alizee (Bet Now: $2.80) two starts ago but she bounced back in big way with her win in the Tea Rose. She had the suck run behind Champagne Cuddles and once she peeled off its back, it was game over and she won with authority. I will say that though that the win was a touch flattering given Champagne Cuddles was ridden out of her comfort zone. Still, a major threat here.

Long Shot

3 One More Honey (Bet Now: $7.00) is a John Thompson trained filly who is looking for the mile and she gets it here. Her run in the Tea Rose was one of the better efforts of the beaten brigade. Had no luck in the straight when appearing to be going quite comfortably and would have gone close with clear air. If she gets it here, I think she’s right in the game.

Race 6. (15:20) Santos Premiere Stakes 1200m

Back Me

There is a possible Everest slot up for grabs here and I think the classy mare 10 In Her Time (Bet Now: $6.00)Β  can nearly secure one here with a win. All the reports are that she is working the house down and has come right on since the Autumn/Winter. Hard to argue with that given her two trials leading in have been outstanding. She gets the map favours, looks wound up…keen on her.

Danger

1 Chautauqua (Bet Now: $3.00) lost no admirers for mine in the Shorts a fortnight back. 1100m first up was always going to be a negative scenario for him and that is how it panned out, but his last 200m was outstanding. His last 600m in fact, clocking a tick over 32. This will clean the cobwebs out, but don’t be shocked if he wins.

Long Shot

2 Clearly Innocent (Bet Now: $7.50) is another that is vying for one of the final Everest slots. This bloke had a fab Winter, winning the Kingsford-Smith Cup before a gutsy third in the Stradbroke. Given a quiet trial in readiness for his return to the races, but we know he has the class/quality to go close here.

Race 7. (16:00) TAB Epsom Handicap 1600m

Back Me

1 Happy Clapper (Bet Now: $2.60) is an absolute beauty for the Pat Webster yard. Peach ride from Josh Adams to win first up in the Tramway before going to the George Main where he looked the winner for the first half of the straight but the mighty mare Winx just went straight past him. On form, he’s the one. Just has to overcome the weight.

Danger

Ah what to do with 9 Tom Melbourne (Bet Now: $6.00). If you took away his profile and looked at him on face value, his three runs this time in have been very good…but I can’t hide away from the fact he is Tom Melbourne and a non winner. This is his D-Day and if you are on him, you’d hope G Boss rolls forward from the wide gate. If he does, with 52kg, he’ll go close…does he win? He can, but not with my money.

Long Shot

The value certainly lies with 6 Mccreery (Bet Now: $16.00). He is going really well at the moment for Chris Waller and I think they have realised he is not a 2000m+ horse. Keep him to the mile. Never looked likely in the George Main, but he was good late in running fourth and to the line with purpose. If he got a bit of give in the track, he’d go close.

Race 8. (16:45) The Metropolitan 2400m

Back Me

Time for 6 Antonio Giuseppe (Bet Now: $6.00) to tell us if he is a contender or pretender. Two commendable runs behind Winx to kick off the prep before going to the Kingston Town where he looked all over a winner but was bloused late by Libran. Been looking for this trip all prep, he gets it, gets weight relief…this is his chance to snare a major.

Danger

The hot tip all Spring is that 1 Libran (Bet Now: $7.00) had come back in better shape than ever. Those who said that were vindicated with his Kingston Town win. He showed an explosive turn of foot when he got the split and in the end, the win was soft. Needs to replicate that here with the weight pull against him, but hard to ignore what he did.

Long Shot

The old boy 2 Who Shot Thebarman (Bet Now: $13.00) is going really well at the moment. Had to like the way he finished off his race in the Kingston Town. never really looked likely to get there, but his last 150m was very good for a horse clearly wanting further. Good record here and is the proven horse at this level at this trip and beyond.

Race 9. (17:25) Snitzel Sprint (90) 1200m

Back Me

8 Spright (Bet Now: $7.00) is the one that interests me here. Talented mare resuming for the Frazer team after a somewhat disappointing and frustrating Autumn campaign. She loomed and threatened to win a couple of good races but couldn’t quite finish off. Her trials leading in have been very good and to my eye is wound up to run a beauty fresh.

Danger

12 Dagny (Bet Now: $7.00) is a talented mare for the Chris Waller yard who resumed over this track/distance a fortnight back and worked home nicely against the tempo when third to the gallant Isorich. She doesn’t have the greatest of second up records compared to her first up record, but she draws a soft gate and gets Moreira steering.

Long Shot

14 Three Sheets (Bet Now: $34.00) is a Jeremy Sylvester trained galloper who always performs well when he comes to town, especially here at Randwick. Lot to like about his effort in the Hurricane at Newcastle a fortnight back when flashing home to just miss on picking up Grand Condor. Up to 1200m is a big tick, and he will be strong late.
