The Adelaide Racing Carnival starts to warm up some more this Saturday at Morphettville with Manihi Classic Day, a lead up for runners heading towards the Goodwood/Sangster. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:41) Maughan Theim Ford Handicap (90) 1600m
Bludger of a race to start the day. 7 Table Of Wisdom (Bet Now: $6.00) on top though. Dennis O’Leary trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced for over four weeks since contesting the Port Lincoln Cup when near a good speed and tiring late when midfield behind Lady Conquistador. Does like racing on the fresh side, looks the leader and should take some beating here.
5 Morvada (Bet Now: $3.60) can bounce back for sure at this level. Was severely back in trip two back when second to One More Daisy before going to the CS Hayes Cup where he was outclassed but far from disgraced when fifth to Mantastic. That form does read well for this and I think with a cold steer and saved for the straight, he’ll be most effective and is a live chance.
1 Balf’s Choice (Bet Now: $5.50) has the form on the board but just how well is he going. He comes through the All Star Mile, where he was an outsider in betting but he didn’t run too bad in the end, and was unlucky not to finish a touch closer behind Mystic Journey. On that, should bolt up here, but is getting on in years and he can be a real hit and miss galloper at times.
Race 2. (14:21) Kilburn Football Club Handicap 1050m
Hoping sustained speed from the front comes to the fore in the shape of the Tony McEvoy trained 3 Lake District Girl (Bet Now: $4.80). She’s had three runs for the prep, winning the first two impressively before going down the Flemington straight where she dropped out late behind Causeway Girl. Back to a bending track back home and severely drops in depth. Should land in front and prove hard to run down.
2 Viduka (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Stryker for Ryan Balfour who is 2/2 to start his career. Debuted with an all the way win at Gawler before racing on the Parks track two weeks ago where he chased hard and race fitness probably saw him get the win when nailing Heaven’s Deal near the line. Was back in trip that afternoon so slightly back up in trip, and sitting off a good speed, he should be a leading contender.
6 Chucky (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of Danerich for Will Clarken resuming. He had three runs in the Summer to kick off his career, winning start two at Gawler with solid metro efforts outside that. There were whispers that Hong Kong was beckoning for this bloke but he remains here and trialled up well at Murray Bridge a couple of weeks back. Keen to see which way he goes in the market.
Race 3. (15:01) Nutella Palooza April 20 Handicap (70) 2000m
9 Lostarc (Bet Now: $2.90) is bursting to win a race for Ryan Balfour but just keeps finding one or two better on the day. Ran over this track/distance on Adelaide Cup where once again Cory Parish gave the son of Rebel raider every chance to win near the speed and he was fighting hard, kicking on strongly but couldn’t hold out the finale of Lieder. He’ll land on speed again, giving his all…can he break the run of outs?
Bit surprised that genuine support has come for 3 All Hard Wood (Bet Now: $3.60). I was all over him last Saturday on the Parks and yes he was held up, but he didn’t exactly ping I thought and I’d say he was more disappointing than unlucky. Maybe he’s a horse who needs clear air early to get into his work? Not sure, but like he’s on the back up straight away and this race isn’t strong.
I’d almost declare 1 Sizzling Bullet (Bet Now: $9.00) if this track had genuine give. I reckon he’s working up big time to a win but unfortunately he keeps finding firm tracks. Still, his run last Saturday behind Flop was a beauty when back, wide with cover and finishing off strongly. The fact he’s racing well on these dry tracks tell me he’s flying. A win wouldn’t surprise at all given that.
Race 4. (15:41) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap 1600m
Looks a good race for the Tony McEvoy trained 4 Just Rolling (Bet Now: $16.00). Resumed over 1400m at Balaklava last Wednesday where he was a hard favourite but just got too far back in a race where those on speed were suited so on face value, he was disappointing, but breaking it down, the run was good. 1600m and bigger track should suit and the form from the Spring does read well.
9 Star Status (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained three year old who had good specking in the market when resuming over 1200m on Adelaide Cup Day and I thought he closed off well over an unsuitable trip behind a potential Stakes class mare in Pretty Glass. Returns back to his own age and quickly up to 1600m is a little query. Might need one more but can run well regardless.
3 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $11.00) should just about be ready to show his best, third up from a break. Ran over 1400m on the Parks track two weeks ago where he was given a sweet steer by Tourneur and loomed to win but I reckon his condition just gave out late. Should be cherry ripe for the 1600m assignment and I think back to the bigger track will suit this Gordon Richards runner.
Race 5. (16:21) Elton John Experience July 27 Handicap (64) 1200m
3 Two Odd Sox (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Shayne Cahill trained gelding who is generally around the mark of late. Got the win on the board three back before a couple of runs where he hasn’t been far away of late, the latest seeing him run a close up third to By The Pound two weeks ago. Course proper, fast run 1200m should suit and is a definite winning chance against these.
12 Miss Mosh (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Sue Jaensch trained mare who can mix her form but I think at her best, she’s a potential Saturday class mare. Sharp winner two back at Bordertown before going to Naracoorte where she ran a close up fourth to France’s Boy, who is a proven city performer, so the form reads alright for this and stable rarely get it wrong when they come to town.
5 Galaxy Gazer (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with the Macdonald/Gluyas stable that has now landed with Will Clarken, and I keep saying that he’s one of the best in Australia at improving tried horses. This horse had really tapered off with his form last time in but a new home, new surroundings, he can improve and the trial from over a month ago wasn’t too bad.
Race 6. (17:01) Laelia Stakes 1600m
Not the strongest race going around. I think the double figures on offer is more than acceptable for 8 Yulong Meteor (Bet Now: $10.00). Looked big in condition first up but got the job done at Benalla before going to the Angus Armanasco where she was okay without setting the world on fire behind Qafila. Has had five weeks off, the blinkers are off and go back to the Spring, her efforts in the Oaks Trial and Wakeful were very good in much stronger company.
Have to give 1 Kenyan Wonder (Bet Now: $4.00) another chance. Ryan Balfour trains this filly, who was so dynamic when winning first up here before going to the Kewney at Flemington where she got back and presented to let down but didn’t do do that all behind Spanish Whisper. Back home and up to a mile, she can bounce back for sure because the talent is there.
6 In Heart’s Wake (Bet Now: $13.00) is on the seven day back up for Tony McEvoy after racing on the Parks track last Saturday where I thought Macfarlane gave the filly every chance but the horse who had the drop out the back pounced and was too good. Think up to the mile will suit, as will returning to the course proper and stable/jock combo should be seriously respected.
Race 7. (17:36) Heinekein 3 Manihi Classic 1100m
5 I Am Someone (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Paul Preusker trained gelding who was just under a couple of months between runs when racing down the straight at Flemington last time where he pulled too hard near the speed and that put pay to his chances when third to She’s So High. Four weeks between runs this time around and with good speed engaged, he should relax in the run and be dangerous.
4 Despatch (Bet Now: $2.10) is a leading contender here for sure, but near even money/odds on? No thank you. I was keen on him when he resumed here on Adelaide Cup Day and under a ripping steer from Vorster, he proved too good. He is a dynamite fresh horse and not as effective second up, plus is drawn wide, so a few negatives, but he might just have enough sustained speed to get the win.
6 Mica Lil (Bet Now: $15.00) is a talented mare for the Mick Minervini stable that resumes. She had two runs in the Spring here and just got too far out of her ground each time she stepped out, both races suited to those near the pace. Heading down the Sangster path, where she ran so well in last year, and a recent Murray Bridge trial was quite good to the eye.
Race 8. (18:15) Schweppes Handicap (64) 1050m
3 Tiara Star (Bet Now: $3.60) for me. This mare was fresh when racing at this track/distance on Adelaide Cup Day where she was just run off her legs early and didn’t have much luck in the straight when sixth, beaten three lengths by Despatch. Think she’ll take good improvement with that run under the belt and with the severe drop in depth, he’ll take some beating here.
Darren Magro had a couple of runners nominated for the race but he goes with the sole runner in 4 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $6.50), who is four weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where she got back and made ground late without really threatening behind Kabini, who ran well at Stakes level next time out, so the form reads alright. Fresh and back to 1050m should suit.
12 Quivers (Bet Now: $7.50) is a very interesting runner. This six year old mare is having her first run for Will Clarken and we know this guy can improved a busted horse, and to be fair, this mare was racing like a busted when last in work. Resumes without a trial, but does have quality when at her best and Stubby does get on with her, so she’s a definite market watch.
