The Bendigo standalone Saturday meeting is becoming one of the premier provincial racedays on the Victorian calendar and the 2019 edition comes around this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:15) RSN Racing Handicap (78) 1300m
It’s a nothing race this, and he’s a bludger, but first run for Paul Preusker, 12 Indian ThunderΒ (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is worth something each way. Had one run for the Maher/Eustace team at the Valley where he just had too much to do from off the pace and on face value was disappointing behind Paremuus Boy, but had excuses. Fresh, new stable, soft gate…he’ll do me as a tip each way.
Always have to respect the Tassie gallopers when they come over and with that in mind, I have to include 2 Mandela Effect (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) for Scott Brunton. Hasn’t been beating a great deal in Tassie compared to what he’ll face here, but he’s just going about it in the right manner and attacking the line with purpose, always a good sign when they come over. I think he’ll measure up.
17 LegaleΒ (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is an interesting runner. Handy galloper for the Hayes/Dabernig stable that resumes after a solid enough opening prep, including efforts behind Savacool, Lucky For All and Bondeiger, which does read well for this. The form guide says he’s only had one fresh run, the debut, but he did have a run off a seven week break and ran second to the Group l performed Octabello. Two jumpouts have been just fair, but the Winkers weren’t on and they’re on for raceday, and perhaps can get over from the wide gate to be near the speed.
Race 2. (12:50) The Big Screen Company Handicap 2200m
2 Secret Blaze (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) has only won the one race for Tony McEvoy but when you go through his form, he’s taken on some high class animals, so this should be a welcomed drop in grade/depth. Contested the Alister Clark last time where I thought he had every chance in the run but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Global Exchange. That does read well for this.
8 Manzala (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a Nick Smart trained gelding who has taken a somewhat different path to most of these. He’s had six runs as a three year old, each of those being against the older horses, where he has won a race, so I don’t think toughness or the trip will be the issue for him. Class may well be but when three year olds get to this trip, sometimes it is toughness and not brilliance that wins the race.
10 Sir GawainΒ (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a John Moloney trained galloper who steps up in trip after bolting up in a maiden over the mile at Pakenham last time out when given a sweet steer by Jordy Childs and despite doing a bit wrong, he charged to the line and was impressive. The 2200m, like with most here, is a little query, but draws to get the suck run behind the speed.
Race 3. (13:30) VOBIS Gold Rush 1000m
14 Sisstar (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is the close relation to stablemate and champion filly Sunlight that is resuming. She debuted down the Flemington straight on Cup Day where it was absolutely bucketing down leading up to the race and the track became very suspect, so I think she was a total forgive on debut behind Bella Rosa. Been given a good break and has looked sharp at the trials. Key chance clearly.
Giving respect to the Busutiin/Young trained youngster, 2 The Executioner (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS). Debuted with an electric win on the Parks track before racing on the course proper there on Adelaide Cup Day where she contested the Magic Millions and on face value, you’d have to mark her down as disappointing, but I think maybe being hunted up to find a spot got her pulling and left her without petrol tickets late. Ridden cold, she’ll be more effective I suspect.
1 Lucifer’s Reward (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Reward For Effort for the Brendan McCarthy stable that debuted over the five furlongs at the Valley and I thought it was a sweet steer from Olly that got him home in good fashion. The tip was in the race given the stable had two runners and Olly rode the roughie instead of the fav. Comes here and looks a leading contender.
Race 4. (14:10) Mitchelton Winery Handicap (84) 1100m
Very keen to see how 4 Creativity (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) goes in her first run for the Craig Widdison stable. When trained by the Ellerton/Zahra stable, she showed good talent in town, ending the Spring with a close up fourth to From Within in the Alinghi. Stable usually gets them forward for a first up assault and a recent Wangaratta jumpout looked very good to the eye.
2 Bel SonicΒ (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is the best horse in the race, but the back up is a little concern given he is at his best when fresh. Ran in the Hareeba last Saturday where he got back in a race where he was back in a race dominated by those on speed. Back on a bigger track, he draws to get decent three wide cover and launch late. Can he handle the seven day turnaround?
I think $26/thereabouts is a silly for 3 Labuan Star (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS), a former Weir galloper that is now with Daniel Bowman. Showed good ability when with the Weir stable. Now in a new home and I thought his recent Camperdown jumpout was more than encouraging to the eye, suggesting he’ll be around the mark first up and he does draw a decent gate, so I’d be definitely including him in multiples.
Race 5. (14:50) Bendigo Bracelet 1400m
Tricky race but going the way of 6 Miss Siska (Bet Now: $3.40), a former Tony McEvoy runner who is having her first run for the Grahame Begg stable. Hasn’t raced since the Matriarch when a narrow second to Kenedna. Trialled well at Cranbourne and then went to Balnarring last Wednesday where she led all the way and looked quite good. Lands near the speed from the draw, sprints well fresh and stable has a good run with tried runners.
8 River Jewel (Bet Now: $13.00) rises a fair bit in depth/grade, but this Ellerton/Zahra trained mare is racing in a purple patch. Was a few weeks between runs when given a sweet steer from Mallyon to win under the lights at Pakenham in a race which has produced a couple of winners, including a Flemington winner. Always have to respect a mare that has a picket fence.
3 Wheal Leisure (Bet Now: $26.00) is a talented mare resuming for Archie Alexander. This mare hasn’t raced since the Matriarch in the Spring where she was at the end of her prep and raced like that when down the track behind Kenedna. Recent Camperdown jumpout was okay but is a two time first up winner and 1400m fresh tells me enough work has been put in.
Race 6. (15:30) Macedon Lodge Handicap (84) 2400m
16 Dark Pearl..(Bet Now: $7.50) can he be trusted? Hadn’t really shown a great deal to date in Australia before going to the Grand Classic Final at Flemington where he got back and worked home well to run second to Wetakemanhattan. If he improves off that, he’ll take some beating here, and up to 2400m should suit him ideally this Chris Waller galloper. Definite chance.
5 Desert Path (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the likely winner. Chris Waller trains this stayer, who has been quite good in three runs since arriving from the UK. Last run came on the bog at Rosehill two weeks ago and he didn’t look entirely happy on the surface but kept finding the line and was far from disgraced behind Supernova. Last time he was at 2400m, he was 11 lengths off Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter. Well held that day, but gee it reads well.
I think up to 2400m will suit the Peter Gelagotis trained 6 Serenade The Stars (Bet Now: $35.00). Ran over 2000m at Flemington three weeks ago where he was back in a slowly run affair and really had no chance behind Hang Man. His best chance will be if the speed is a good, rolling tempo and perhaps survival of the fittest. 2400m record is sound, so for mine, is a knockout chance.
Race 7. (16:10) Golden Mile 1600m
Happy to butter up on the Chris Waller trained 9 Haripour (Bet Now: $18.00). Had something on him each way when he resumed over 1400m at Flemington and it was a race where backmarkers had no chance but he did close off alright and his late splits were good. Fast run mile here looks ideal for this bloke and the jumpouts prior to the resumption said he’s come back well.
3 Furrion (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Hayes/Dabernig runner who is four weeks between runs since contesting the Shaftesbury Avenue at Flemington where he was set an impossible task from the back but was a clear eye catcher when fifth to Violate. Streets Of Avalon has franked that form and given Gerry Ryan owns, you’d like to think this horse will be wound up for this.
7 Plein Ciel (Bet Now: $9.50) comes through the Widgee Turf race from two weeks ago at Flemington and I thought his effort was more than acceptable in a race which didn’t really pan out well for him. Has an excellent second up record and a fast run mile here should suit his racing pattern and the first up form has been franked via the Hareeba and Streets Of Avalon.
Race 8. (16:50) Bendigo Guineas 1400m
14 Shamwow (Bet Now: $9.50) is the knockout chance. The Busuttin/Young stable have a nice filly on their hands here. Resumed with an electric maiden win at Sale before going to the Vanity, where she was no hope given the track pattern/tempo. Freshened up and ran at Ballarat where she took on the older horses and was pretty good in getting the job done. I think she’s up to this level for sure and can win.
16 Mystery Love (Bet Now: $4.40) looks a progressive filly for the Mick Price stable that is 2/2 to start her career. Impressive debut winner at Benalla before going to the Sandown midweeks where Olly lobbed her into the A1 spot and from there, it was a pretty painless watch if you were on. Harder here, but heading in the right direction and am keen to see her at 1400m.
13 Metronome (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Mick Kent trained filly who has been kept on ice after contesting the Angus Armanasco at Caulfield where she seemed to have every chance in the run but was far from disgraced behind Qafila in a race where the form has been okay via Angelic Ruler, but no winners. Trial last Monday was good and this does look somewhat of a drop in overall depth.
Race 9. (17:25) Underground Cable Systems Handicap (90) 1400m
I think there’s a horse here at huge odds that could run a positive race and that’s 1 Liapari (Bet Now: $81.00). Has had three runs for Lisa Enright and he’s been really good in each run without winning. Had two runs in the Spring, fourth each time in the Sale Cup and Sandown Stakes. Spelled and resumed in the Abell at the Valley where he was really no hope but late splits were okay. 1400m, bigger track, good speed to sit off…I think he could run a beauty at odds.
I think the weight relief will really suit the Jason Warren trained 13 Antah (Bet Now: $5.00). Three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Flemington where he lumped 59.5kg and couldn’t dash with the weight in a brave effort when third to Simply Invincible. Gets down to 55.5kg and from the gate, he should do no work in the run and prove hard to hold out.
16 Critical Thinking (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Brent Stanley trained gelding who hasn’t raced for a few weeks since contesting the Echuca Cup where he was far from disgraced in defeat I thought when fifth to the well performed Heptagon, beaten 6.6L. The stable can get one up for a feature day and on their home track, you’d like to think this horse will be ready to go.
