A strong nine race program has been organised for Ascot this Friday where we will see a couple of key lead ups to the Karrakatta Plate. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:05) Get The Tabtouch Maiden 1400m
Pike remains on. Tough maiden to kick the meeting off but I think 14 Friar’s Classic (Bet Now: $5.00) can get the job done. This girl was a notable drifter in betting when racing over the six furlongs at Bunbury last time out and after getting a nice run near the speed, she presented to be a winning threat but just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Sweet Dreamin’. Up to 1400m is ideal, draws well and Parnham sticks.
11 Tips And Scandals (Bet Now: $5.00) would have clearly been on top but then I saw the gear change: Bar Plates First Time. No thank you. Not on top but has to go in the numbers off the back of an excellent run over 1200m here a couple of Wednesdays back when flashing home from near last to run fourth to Pixated. 1400m looks ideal, ticks the boxes…but the Bar Plates are on.
1 Clever Dick (Bet Now: $6.00) can pull hard in his races and that has been a big reason why hasn’t been able to break the maiden tag yet. Resumed over 1200m here at the midweeks where he was on speed and was keen again in the run and that early burn just left him with no petrol tickets late when second to Pixated. Up to 1400m suits, gets the claim…just needs to relax.
Race 2. (16:40) Heineken 3 Handicap (Class 3) 1600m
1 Tellem We’re Comin‘ (Bet Now: $1.65) looks one of the better bets on the card. Team Williams train this son of Blackfriars who was confidently backed when resuming over 1400m here a couple of Wednesdays back and despite sitting near last in a slowly run affair, he came with a well timed run out wide to grab them and win, clocking some good late splits. 1600m no issue and Pike remains on.
2 Cyberpunk (Bet Now: $10.00) was four weeks between runs when racing over the seven furlongs here on March 14 where he got a fair way back off the speed in a race dominated by the leader and eventual winner New Time. He kept coming and found the line well but just gave away too much start. If he sits closer here, he can win.
5 Thunder Boom (Bet Now: $4.50) is a tick over three weeks between runs for the Pearce team since racing at this track/distance where she was okay without being great when fifth to Dark Prospect in what did look a pretty decent midweek contest. She does tend to go well on the fresh side and gets the blinkers on.
Race 3. (17:10) Amelia Park Karrakatta Plate Day Handicap (Class 1) 1200m
This race looks to be all about 8 Demeritorious (Bet Now: $23.00) and where he is at condition wise. If he’s forward enough I think he’ll just about win. Kicked off his career in the Spring with a two run prep, winning on debut at Geraldton before failing here on Melbourne Cup Day but did pull up with heat stress and that is a query here because the forecast is for 32. You’ll know your fate I think by how he parades.
1 Ramruey (Bet Now: $5.00) is a four year old gelding who resumed over the 1000m at Bunbury and did a really good job to get as close he did when second to Exexcel because they didn’t appear to go overly hard in front yet he savaged the line to just miss out on the win, with the rider dropping the whip in the straight. Draws to get a suck run and is fitter.
4 Vital Asset (Bet Now: $6.00) looks the knockout chance at odds. Closed off strongly here first up at 1000m behind Santiago Gal before going to Pinjarra and racing as if it was a barrier trial, getting no luck at all when appearing to be bolting. He won’t get pocketed from the wide gate but he may have to give away a start. If he’s close enough, he’s good enough to win.
Race 4. (17:45) Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (0MW) 1400m
Each way I don’t think you’ll go wrong with 3 Deadly Shot (Bet Now: $4.40). Might have been $31 when winning last Wednesday at Bunbury but to my eye, the win was outstanding with a touch of dominance, sitting wide with cover before peeling clear and letting down hard. Should get the ideal sit off noted speedster New Time and have last look.
1 New Time (Bet Now: $3.10) is an absolute beauty for the Jim Taylor team and how good was it to see him bring up 100 starts with an all the way win here on March 14, doing his thing on speed and fighting hard late to hold despite clearly being out of petrol tickets late. Gets in well with the claim, he’ll lead and take some running down.
7 Broker (Bet Now: $3.50) is another that should enjoy a lovely sit just off a likely strong tempo. He had the beaut sit three weeks ago at Pinjarra and once Johnston-Porter got him clear air, he savaged the line and won as he pleased. Run prior over the mile here was a beauty and with the solid speed, he’ll be strong late. He’s not a long shot, but they look the only three hopes.
Race 5. (18:15) Penfolds Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
Hope and ask for help upstairs that 5 Undisclosed (Bet Now: $8.00) turns up, the proper one. Colin Webster trains this mare and she can be very hot and cold but if she is on and right to go, her speed will be too much for these. Hasn’t raced since October 21 last year when missing the kick which sealed her fate. No trials, but she’s the sort of type that doesn’t need much to be forward in condition.
8 Bronze Idol (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Team Pearce trained gelding who has had two runs back from a break. Ran second to Tripeletto first up at Bunbury before racing here a couple of Wednesdays ago and facing quite flat it seemed behind a potential blacktype horse in Pearls And Prawns. Be wary of the third up bounce back.
2 Denim Pack (Bet Now: $3.20) is a son of Demerit that resumes for the Mike Santich team. This bloke did a really good job in the Spring, winning a couple of races in town and performing at a consistently strong level in town. Thought he trialled up very nicely a couple of weeks back at Belmont and is a first up winner.
Race 6. (18:45) Iron Jack Perth Stakes 1100m
Really tough and competitive two year old race. 4 Driftstar (Bet Now: $1.35) for me though. Simon Miller trains this colt, who debuted back in January over 1000m here where he led all the way and gave them an absolute spanking, running very sharp time relative to the meeting, which is always a good sign for a two year old. Happy to be in his corner.
3 Chix Pic (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Patronize gelding who debuted over the 1000m here on March 14 and despite no real market support, I thought he was quite dominant in getting the job done, and ran the 1000m in similar time to what Driftstar did when he won. Couple of gear changes to sharpen him and extra 100m no issue.
1 Platoon (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Neville Parnham trained colt who is six weeks between runs since resuming in the Magic Millions at Pinjarra when settling on speed and fighting on okay in defeat behind Valour Road. Been given a good freshen up and has trialled up well at Belmont to tune up for this and of course the Karrakatta Plate.
Race 7. (19:15) Montague Partners Gimcrack Stakes 1100m
Hard to get away from 2 Assetro (Bet Now: $2.15). Quality filly for Adam Durrant who has won two of her three career outings. Ran over this track/distance just under four weeks back where she got well back off the speed but once Pike presented her out wide, she savaged the line like she did on debut and was most impressive. Confident she can get the job done.
3 Agent Pippa (Bet Now: $5.50) is the unknown. She was hard in the market when resuming in the Supremacy over the 1000m here but after sitting on speed, she folded the last 100m when a battling third to Lady Cosmology. Go back to the Spring and she as considered good enough to race on Cup Week in Melbourne. If she’s right she’ll go close.
4 Princess Pierro (Bet Now: $9.00) had the suck run behind the speed in the Supremacy and once she got into the clear 300m out, she looked as if she’d win the race but Lady Cosmology went up another gear and proved far too good, and this girl seemingly had her chance. She’ll give away a tidy start but she’ll be strong late
Race 8. (19:45) Glenroy Chaff Handicap (0MW) 2100m
3 American Joy (Bet Now: $4.80) could be heading down the Oaks path but she’d need to be beating these. Ran over 1850m at Mount Barker where she settled last in the small field and hooked widest on the turn, letting down hard, but just missed out on the win in a bob of the head finish. Getting fitter and Pike on now.
9 Send My love (Bet Now: $4.20) is a filly with huge from the stable and they think she, like the top tip, could be an Oaks horse. Debuted with a surprise win at Pinjarra before going to the Thousand Guineas where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick when fourth to Like A Butterfly. Up to 2100m looks no issue and has upside.
4 Young Thor (Bet Now: $23.00) had been just okay at the sprint trips for Lindsey Smith so he stepped the horse up in trip last time out at Bunbury over 1675m and it worked as he sat back and unleashed a decent finale to grab them and win narrowly but impressively. Should do no work from the gate and has upside.
Race 9. (20:20) Mumm Champagne Handicap (Class 1) 2200m
2 Magical Charm (Bet Now: $2.00) is a daughter of Savabeel for the Williams team who is on the Oaks path. Dominant maiden win over 2000m at Bunbury two back before stepping up to 2200m on that track where she hit the front and looked the winner but just didn’t quite see it through when pipped late by Plays The Game. Should get a lovely run from the barrier and appears the safe option.
7 Infinite Beauty (Bet Now: $9.50) is an unknown beyond a mile but she is racing as if it will suit. She ran over the mile at Bunbury last time out and worked home strongly late despite doing a bit wrong in the straight when second to Imortalise, beaten around a head. Still a maiden, but is showing promise, and overall, this is a weak race.
1 Drivin’ Me Wild (Bet Now: $35.00) comes through the Plays The Game race mentioned above. He jut got too far back in the run and those in front dashed, he couldn’t go with them and was only warming up late in the piece when fifth. He should get a more genuine tempo this time around and doesn’t get badly in at the weights after the claim.
