WA metro racing this Saturday heads to Ascot for an eight race card where it is Scenic Blast Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:49) Schweppes Maiden 1200m
3 Tycoon Legend (Bet Now: $2.80) gets the nod for me in the opener. Kieran McDonagh trained gelding who was 45 weeks between runs when resuming over the 1100m here a fortnight back where he had really strong market support and the plunge was nearly home but he had to settle for a narrow second to Princess Zelda. Should come on from that and strikes a thin race.
10 Vermont Lady (Bet Now: $4.60) is a daughter of Choisir first up for the Paige Kenney team. This mare has run well in town before and does have some strong form around her. 40 weeks between runs but to my eye she trialled up really well at Lark Hill back on January 15 and the stable finds Pike to ride first up.
4 Welcome Shadow (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Ross Price trained gelding who will be on speed and fighting. Just the last 100m will be his test. That last 100m saw him out last start at Pinjarra when third to Universal Fancy. If he can get over on speed without spending too many petrol tickets and the tempo isn’t hot, he’ll go close.
Race 2. (16:29) Penfolds Handicap 1600m
1 Action (Bet Now: $2.05) looks one of a couple of good things on the program. Team Williams trains this three year old, who resumed three weeks back over 1400m here against the older horses and worked home with real purpose late to run third to Oliver’s Travels. Should only improve off that, back to his own age now…think he just wins.
2 Hoodlum Thunder (Bet Now: $4.60) comes through the Lucky Roar race over 1500m here a fortnight back. He was probably the unlucky runner from the event. Got back and held up at a vital stage before eventually bursting clear to just miss in a close go. Should sit closer in the run from the draw and with clear air, he can fire.
3 Lucky Roar (Bet Now: $8.50) won that 1500m race mentioned above that Hoodlum Thunder ran a close up second in. This filly for Jim Taylor stormed home from the back to grab victory in the shadows in what was a real blanket finish. Gets in very well with the claim fro Tayla Stone and draws to get a lovely run in transit.
Race 3. (17:09) Mumm Champagne Handicap (1MW) 1800m
9 Sandalwood (Bet Now: $2.45) on top. This gelding ran over the mile here a fortnight back and I thought it was a lovely ride from Lucy Warwick that got him home, trucking up behind My Grace before angling off his back and finishing best. Should have no issues with the 1800m and rates highly for me in this race.
5 Shibuya Crossing (Bet Now: $7.00) has been up since forever it seems but gee he is racing well. He ran over the 1720m at Narrogin last week and worked home with real purpose late when third to Toru Waimarie, beaten just under a length. Up to 1800m on the bigger track looks ideal, he has run well in town before and Pike is back on.
4 Hot Bresa (Bet Now: $9.50) is a tick over two weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got a mile back in the run and really was never really a factor but he worked home okay late behind Press The Petal. He can be a hard one to trust at times, but Glenn Smith takes over and his strong hands might help this bludger.
Race 4. (17:50) Magic Millions Handicap (72+) 2150m
2 Jackpot Prince (Bet Now: $2.60), with clear air, is the bet of the day across Australia. Alarming drifter last time out here but in running, he was the one you always wanted to be on and once he presented to the outside, it was game over. He was only second up there so should be enormous upside and he’s the one to beat for sure.
3 Cruachan (Bet Now: $3.40) is having his first crack at 2000m+, and while that is a concern, but does have a fair few of these on toast in regards to class. He ran over 1800m here three weeks ago where he was up on speed, a surprise move given he normally is out the back. But it worked as he got the job done. Pike sticking a good lead.
8 Persistence Time (Bet Now: $41.00) is a Ken Adams trained of Blackfriars who attempted to lead all the way at this track/distance a fortnight back and to his credit he gave a pretty solid kick but just tired late when fourth to At The Ready. Think there is more depth to this race, but he should get a soft lead and is the minimum.
Race 5. (18:25) James Boags Premium Handicap 1200m
7 The Ninth Hour (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Snitzel for the Chris Gangemi team who started odds on when debuting over 1100m at Bunbury and the market got it right as he bolted in and ran really good time relative to the meeting. Maps to get a lovely cart over here on speed and with natural progression/upside, he’s the one for me.
11 Bahama Mama (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Gingerbread Man filly who is two for two for the Dan Morton, the latest win coming over 1200m at Bunbury when heavily backed. Pike gave her the sweet sit just off the speed and once he popped her into clear air, it was game over and she won as she pleased. Should be on speed and proving hard to beat.
4 Pearl Trade (Bet Now: $11.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where was wide with cover throughout before peeling wider and finishing off nicely late to run third to the above average Street Fury. That form does read well for this. Hopefully she can take advantage of the inside draw.
Race 6. (19:00) Scenic Blast Stakes 1200m
8 Red Ora (Bet Now: $7.50) is a former Dan Morton trained sprinter who had his first run for the Steve Wolfe team in the Mungrup Stud Sprint at Mount Barker and he absolutely bolted in under Shaun McGruddy and showed a brilliant turn of foot when asked. If he reproduces that here, gee he’ll take some beating.
1 Battle Hero (Bet Now: $4.60) hadn’t won for a while but it was good to see him back in the winners list when scoring a superb and tough win in the Summer Scorcher back on New Years Day, beating home Caipirinha, who of course franked the form when winning the Miss Andretti. Battle Hero is suited at 1200m and should get a lovely sit.
6 Properantes (Bet Now: $31.00) comes through the Miss Andretti and for mine he just never looked happy with the race and the way it was run. He isn’t a sprinter and just didn’t have the speed in the legs to go with them. I think he’ll be better suited at the 1200m here, and if they go hard in front, this bloke will be strong late.
Race 7. (19:40) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (66+) 1400m
10 The Big Show (Bet Now: $3.80) was an alarming drifter in betting when resuming over 1200m at Pinjarra last Wednesday but with some help from a lovely ride on speed from Pike, the son of Frost Giant proved too good for an above average type in Yindi. Can only improve off that and Pike sticks which is a good lead.
12 West Fifty Fourth (Bet Now: $3.80) is a promising conveyance for the Chris Gangemi team who raced over 1200m here at the midweeks back on January 17 and despite a soft track and a very notable market drift, he proved too good and ran good time relative to the meeting. Looks promising and I think he can measure up.
6 Gangbuster (Bet Now: $18.00) resumed over 1200m here a fortnight back without a trial to prepare, so fitness levels were unknown ad the market thought he’d need the run. Sat wide no cover for the trip but stuck on really well in defeat. If he can get cover from the barrier, now he’s had the run under the belt, I think he’s a definite threat.
Race 8. (20:15) Tabtouch Handicap (66+) 1200m
10 Royal Missile (Bet Now: $2.70) trialled up enormous prior to resuming over 1100m here a fortnight back and the Simon Miller trained sprinter was dynamic in wining, sailing home out wide under Pike to record a dominant first up victory. He’ll get back again from the draw but there looks to be a stack of speed once again. Happy to stick.
1 More Aces (Bet Now: $11.00) is on the seven day back up for the Jim taylor team after racing over 1100m here last Saturday where he did a power of work on speed and just tired late when fourth to Gee Boss. Cast a plate and pulled up with abrasions so clearly excuses for him. Obviously has come through that well otherwise stable wouldn’t back up. Good sign.
2 Tenterden (Bet Now: $20.00) ran second to Royal Missile in that race mentioned above. He attempted to lead all the way under Tayla Stone and perhaps copped a bit too much pressure in front but hardly an excuse for mine as the winner was dominant. Does get a 1.5kg weight swing and a better barrier. Can turn the tables, but I’m gambling he won’t.
