Doomben will host Melbourne Cup Day racing in Brisbane on Tuesday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Melbourne Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Melbourne Cup
Race 1. (12:33) Ipg Marketing Solutions Mdn 1050m
6 San Antonio (Bet Now: $5.00) has had a few homes in his short career to date. Was formerly with the Maher/Eustace camp, then went to Team Snowden, but is now in Queensland under the care of Sean Anderson. Form around both career outings is quite strong and comes here with no official trial, so I think watch the market.
Another former NSW galloper makes his debut up north, this one being 2 Scrooge (Bet Now: $6.50). Formerly with Matty Dale, this guy is now with Steve Tregea and I find him a fascinating runner. Hasn’t raced since June 2019, resumes without a public trial, but he’s a huge market watch with the stable getting Ryan Wiggins to steer.
10 Miss McKinley (Bet Now: $3.70) is a very interesting runner. Daughter of Dawn Approach for the Sears camp that resumes, having not raced since her debut at Ipswich back in June when a well supported favourite. On speed, tried hard, but just felt the pinch late behind Luskin Hero. Looked solid enough in a recent Toowoomba trial, and she draws soft.
Race 2. (13:11) Tab Create Your Calendar-bm70 1200m
Tricky race, but leaning the way of 3 Five Oxford (Bet Now: $4.80) for the Michael Nolan stable. Broke his maiden status in emphatic fashion last time out at Gatton, sitting on speed most of the way and he bolted in under Les Tilley. Bit of depth to this field, but has the early speed to get across from the gate and prove hard to run down.
2 Miss Lot Won (Bet Now: $3.40) has a touch of quality and maps to get a perfect run in transit. Tom Button trained filly that gave them a belting at Rockhampton over 1200m, getting the ideal sit just off the speed before angling into clear air and away she went, going on to spank them. Should get run of the race stuff here and is a leading contender.
5 Better Get Set (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained filly that was an impressive first up maiden winner at the Sunny Coast before racing here just over a week ago where she was off the speed and tried hard, but those in front controlled things to suit themselves, including eventual winner Paredo. Depth here is nowhere near as strong and proves hard to beat at odds.
Race 3. (13:50) Lexus Of Brisbane Group Hcp-c6 1660m
I think if 2 The Tax Accountant (Bet Now: $2.15) is to win this, Huxtable needs to be positive from the gate, find the front, control things and turn it into a sit/sprint. The query with him is 1660m, but ability and class wise, he is the best horse in the race, and by some distance. Backed as if unbeatable last time out at Rockhampton over 1300m and tried hard, but couldn’t get there and had to settle for a second to Flying Crackerjack. Fitter, up in trip, hopefully finds control and is too good.
5 Kedah (Bet Now: $4.20) looks well suited up in trip for Kris Lees. This mare was three weeks between runs and coming back in trip when racing over the mile here last Saturday and she found the line pretty well in an on pace dominated affair won by Love Struck. You’d like to think she’ll come on from that and hopefully the track can dry up.
6 Tabard (Bet Now: $5.00) is an absolute beauty. Very honest customer that is rarely far away and deserves a crack in town after giving his rivals a spanking at Toowoomba last time out on a near bottomless track. Overall, this isn’t a strong race, and he’s a last start winner, so he doesn’t need to be anything special to measure up.
Race 4. (14:37) Nova 106.9 Mdn Plate 1350m
Winkers on from gate one, think it is a lovely race for 12 Spill Queen (Bet Now: $3.80). The Meagher camp trains this filly, who is over two weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance in a 3YO handicap when settling last in the field of five and worked home okay without really threatening. Drops to maiden company, has gate one, Winkers first time…hopefully the gate is used to advantage.
7 Way Beyond (Bet Now: $2.30) is hard to beat for Stuart Kendrick, but do feel he is short enough at around the $2.60 quote given he was beaten as a $1.60 pop fresh at the Gold Coast, just missing out on picking up Magic In Me. Fitter and up to 1350m are two big ticks and he does have the superior form. Just a matter of where he gets to from the draw.
3 Highlights (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Your Song for the Guy stable that debuts. He’s had two trials to get ready for his first start, placing each time and looking pretty solid every time he stepped out. This looks a strong maiden, so not sure he wins, but I can definitely include him in wider multples from the good draw.
Race 5. (15:51) Bne's Summer Of Racing Hcp-c2 1050m
2 Stylish Saga (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Real Saga gelding for the Chris Anderson stable that resumes. This bloke last raced on August 5 when a close up second at the Sunny Coast behind Run For Glory. Resumes without a trial, but he is effective over a shorter trip and should get a lovely run from the inside draw. Hard to beat.
7 Don’tdie Wondering (Bet Now: $3.80) looks hard to beat for Billy Healey. Resumed over 1000m at the Sunny Coast when near the speed throughout and did try hard, but couldn’t sustain it in the run to the line when third to Lyrical Girl, who bolted up here on Saturday, so the form reads well, holds up from gate one and is hard to beat.
6 Autumn Splendour (Bet Now: $6.00) deserves another chance. Former Phillip Stokes trained galloper that has had a couple of runs now for Matty Dunn. Resumed with an all the way win at Grafton before going to Lismore, where I thought she was a good thing, but it looked like she was on the wrong leg throughout in the straight and didn’t stretch out at all. Better than that, so give her another chance.
Race 6. (16:32) Lexus (bm65) 2060m
Bit surprised there is double figures on offer for 11 Past Tense (Bet Now: $7.50). Think she’s one of the better each way gambles on the program. Chris Waller resumed her over 1800m at the Gold Coast and the win was outstanding. Was made to chase from a fair way out, but knuckled down strongly to overhaul them late in an impressive win. Fitter, up to 2000m, and the Waller/Dittman combo is going super.
7 Warp Speed (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Rob Heathcoate trained gelding that looks like he will appreciate a rise in trip, which he gets here this afternoon. Toughed it out best to win over the mile at the Sunny Coast last time out under a lovely ride from Jimmy Orman, who remains on for this. Depth here isn’t strong and should prove hard to beat.
4 Kiriana (Bet Now: $7.50) is a mare I have always had time for. Symons/Laxon team trains this girl, who produced a pretty strong finale to win on her home track at the Sunny Coast. Is bred to handle 2000m and is a two time winner at 1800m, and given the lack of depth, I think this is a good race to test her out at the trip.
Race 7. (17:08) Jim Beam Hcp (c4) 1200m
Leaning the way of 1 Scathing (Bet Now: $3.30), who resumes for Chris Munce. This four year old gelding hasn’t raced since June 27 here when on speed and tiring late, at the end of a long prep, when down the track behind Starla. Given a quiet trial to get ready for his return and is unbeaten in two previous fresh attempts.
9 Maozi (Bet Now: $3.50) is the class of the field. Team Edmonds trained mare that has blacktype quality when right, so keen to see how she goes fresh. Put together a decent sequence of runs when last in work, placing on three occasions before being spelled. Two trials for her to get ready, she’ll get back and launch at these late.
11 Simply So (Bet Now: $34.00) is capable of running a bold race at odds. The Symons/Laxon team trains this mare, who sprouted wings late to win two back at the Gold Coast before going to the 1200m here where the tempo was too slow for her and she had no chance of running on. Think with a more genuine tempo this time around, she can bounce back.
Race 8. (17:47) Canadian Club Qlty 1110m
5 Jami Lady (Bet Now: $4.00) is a quality mare for Steve O’Dea that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich when a close up second to Solar Star, which was over 1350m, a trip probably a touch further than what her sweet spot is, which on form is 1200m. But she is 3/6 at 1000m and looks in great order if the trials efforts are any guide.
2 Spurcraft… (Bet Now: $5.00) did they find out another way to ride him last time out? They rode him stone cold when racing over 1000m at Eagle Farm and the result was a barnstorming finale from the back to win. Has to do that now at Doomben instead of Eagle Farm, but he’s the right price I reckon to find out if he can.
Very interesting runner is 4 Hard Empire (Bet Now: $13.00), formerly with Team Jolly but now finds himself with Team Edmonds, potentially with an eye towards the Magic Millions in January maybe? He’s been a beauty for a number of seasons and established himself as a Stakes class horse when racing in SA. Trials leading in have been super…the gate is the concern.
Race 9. (18:26) Tab Venue Mode (bm68) 1350m
10 Explosive Quality (Bet Now: $4.40) has her share of talent for Gillian Heinrich. I thought she was super two weeks ago over 1200m here. She sat last in a sit/sprint and when they ran home in 33.6, she had no chance, so for her to finish as close as she did was enormous. If she can sit a pair or two closer in the run, gee she will take some beating.
5 Toomai (Bet Now: $3.60) looks the key threat. Chris Waller trained mare that was six weeks between runs when racing over this track/distance and I loved the way she closed off from the back, charging late to just miss out on picking up stablemate Lubuk. Any hint of improvement from that and she’ll go close. Think she’s the main danger.
11 Poetic Choice (Bet Now: $21.00) should be suited by a rise in trip for Les Ross. Finished best to win two back over 1100m at the Gold Coast before coming back to 1000m at the Sunny Coast and he worked home strongly late when a close up fourth to Broken Hero. Gets the 3kg claim and is in form. Rough outside winning hope.
