Sydney racing returns to Rosehill this Saturday where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) Lack Group Handicap 1100m
1 Time To Reign (Bet Now: $1.50) is the close relation to She Will Reign who debuted at Randwick a fortnight ago where he was an absolute pro, doing everything right on speed and proving far too good for his rivals. Did he beat much? I’m saying probably not, but have to give a big tick to youngsters who do everything right.
3 Jonah (Bet Now: $4.50) is a handy looking colt for Team Snowden who is having his first start. Well related type, with one of his siblings including the high quality mare I Am Excited. Thought he closed off quite nicely on the Synthetic at Warwick Farm when running fourth. Stable should always be respected with their youngsters.
I want to give 5 Head On (Bet Now: $9.00) a chance. Team Hawkes trains this colt, who was a bit new to the caper on debut in the Breeders Plate before tackling the Victory Vein where he didn’t handle the bog behind the filly regarded as currently the best two year old we’ve seen this season, Anaheed. That form reads well, home track, hard race fit and draws well.
Race 2. (12:40) Dynation Sales & Hire Handicap (76) 1200m
I think 4 Shamino (Bet Now: $17.00) is worth a gamble. David Briedoake trains this gelding and we know the stable should always be respected when they come to Sydney. Ran over 1000m on Moe Cup Day last time and he bolted in, landing some good bets. Beat the older horses, which is a big tick, and the time he ran was very quick relative to the meeting. Confident he can measure up.
5 Brazilica (Bet Now: $2.70) is a well bred filly for Chris Waller who was backed with confidence when debuting on the Kensington track at Randwick and she was never really going to get beat, with Bowman riding her like she was the best horse in the race and that is how it panned out. More depth here, but she looks pretty good.
1 Ronstar (Bet Now: $6.50) is an interesting runner. Gary Portelli trains this three year old, who won a couple of races to kick off his career in the Winter before stepping up to 1400m and not seeing it out. Has had three trials in readiness for his return to the races, so there looks to be intent to run well first up.
Race 3. (13:20) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
I think the market will be the guide to 4 Chewbacca (Bet Now: $3.50). If there is any sort of push, he’s the one to beat. Progressive son of Uncle Mo for Danny Williams who is back for a Summer campaign after two runs in the Autumn, where he won brilliantly first up before contesting the Goulburn Qualifier of the Country Championships where it was too soon for him behind Kopi Luwak. Really keen to see how he goes.
Back on top of the ground should suit 1 Handle The Truth (Bet Now: $3.40) and the early punters agree because he has been best backed to win. Just didn’t appear to let down on the sticky track last time at Randwick when fourth to noted swimmer The Lion. Tricky gate to overcome, and for mine is poorly weighted, but market push and form has to be respected.
3 Bella Amante (Bet Now: $11.00) interests me. Joseph Ible trains this mare, who is first up and looks ready to go fresh. Won at the provincials at Kembla first up last prep in a race which looked decent enough on paper. Has had two trials to prepare for her return and given she is first up here, I think there’s intent to run well.
Race 4. (14:00) Lidoran Group Handicap 1900m
3 Mask Of Time (Bet Now: $3.30) looks the winner doesn’t he? The Maher/Eustace team have had a very fruitful Spring in Sydney and I think this horse is beautifully placed. Led all the way to share the spoils in the Coongy Cup alongside Best Of Days, who would be odds on here. Back in trip no issue, should lead and take beating.
5 The Lord Mayor (Bet Now: $3.00) looks to be going well for the Waller camp. On the quick back after racing last Friday night at the Valley where he was on speed and battled away pretty well in defeat behind Zahspeed. Been up a while but continues to race in good form and should get a good run near the tempo.
Interesting there has been a market push for 7 Naval Warfare (Bet Now: $4.60) for Chris Waller. On the quick back up after racing over 1800m last Saturday at Randwick where he got midfield and seemingly looked to be going okay but couldn’t dash on the bog track behind Aqua D’Vina. Firmer footing, fitter, down in the weights, can see why he has been backed.
Race 5. (14:45) Turner Freeman Handicap (88) 2400m
I’ll go with the tough on speed runner in 2 Social Element (Bet Now: $4.20). Gallant effort in defeat two back in the Port Macquarie Cup behind Exoteric before placing behind that horse again in the Tatts Cup in a tough on pace effort. Looks as if he’ll set the tempo and on a firm Rosehill surface, on speed will be no disadvantage.
5 Raqeeq (Bet Now: $2.50) is on the quick back up for Chris Waller after racing over 2000m last Saturday at Randwick where I thought he ran well in a slowly run race when fourth to the in form Sky Boy. I think the 2400m will be okay for him and the depth here is nowhere near as strong as what he’s faced recently.
6 Tamarack (Bet Now: $3.70) had been bursting to win a race and it came last Wednesday at Warwick Farm where he was given a peach steer from Tye Angland and despite a struggle with Shangani Patrol, he edged away late and just proved too good. Good record here, at the 2400m and gets weight relief. Likeable.
Race 6. (15:25) CFMEU Mining & Energy Division Handicap (78) 1300m
5 Schubert (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for James Cummings. Just needs luck. He has had all bad luck this prep in both runs, firstly at Warwick Farm behind stablemate Catesby before racing on the Kensington track at Randwick and closing off nicely late behind Chapelco. Third up specialist and loves the distance. Appeals strongly.
Giving respect to 3 Muraahib (Bet Now: $4.80). First two runs this prep were on Synthetic tracks and he proved too good. Pulled up with Atrial Fibrillation next time out behind Eclair Calling before getting the suck run and battling away well behind Manuel. That form does appeal for a race of this nature. Happy to give him a look.
Very interested to see what 1 Caerless Choice (Bet Now: $10.00) does first up. Paul Messara trains this quality gelding, who was being trained for a first up crack at the Kosciuszko but couldn’t get a slot. Hasn’t raced since the Country Championship Final when midfield behind Victorem, but has trialled well leading up to the resumption. Just want a market push.
Race 7. (16:10) Amwu Handicap (88) 1200m
I’m not one to declare a horse off a trial, but you’d nearly have to make an exception with 3 Newsfan (Bet Now: $2.30). Quality mare resuming for Kim Waugh who hasn’t raced since the Provincial Championship Final when running a gallant second to the above average mare Serene Miss. She went like an absolute jet in winning a Wyong trial and the time was clearly the best of the morning, and she was under a hold.
Have give respect to 8 Dawn Dawn (Bet Now: $2.80). This Team Hawkes trained mare comes through the Northwood Plume at Caulfield and I thought her run was very good. Got a mile out of her ground first up but had like to her finale, clocking some of the best late splits of the race. She can sit much closer in the run. Hopefully that eventuates.
4 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $10.00) is a daughter of Time Thief resuming for Kris Lees. This girl can be a touch hit and miss at times but certainly when she’s on song, she’s certainly up to these. Her stats say she’ll need the run, but her two trials leading in have been encouraging. The market will be the guide to her chances.
Race 8. (16:55) Bradford Black Handicap (88) 1200m
If 10 Cradle Mountain (Bet Now: $2.30) runs up to anywhere near his best, he’ll be winning, but for mine he seems short enough to find out. Smashed the clock first up on Anzac Day at Randwick before going to Scone where he pulled up with excuses. Two trials leading in have been very good and he’s got a real factor about him because he has brilliant sustained speed.
Why is 1 Royal Tudor (Bet Now: $14.00) at double figure odds? He’s a beauty for Rod Ollerton who is first up here. His fresh record doesn’t read the best, but first up last prep, in a much stronger race than this, he should have bolted in but had no luck in the straight when fourth to Memes. Thought he was sharp in a Newcastle trial win and has class on these.
5 Passage Of Time (Bet Now: $13.00) is a big watch. Joe Pride trains this handy five year old, who I think you should put a line through when it comes to last prep because he faced hard tracks throughout before finally getting a bog in the last run but by then he was a tired horse behind Noire. Much better suited here fresh and is a good horse first up.
Race 9. (17:40) Bradford Energy Handicap (88) 1500m
Pretty keen here on 8 Fierce Impact (Bet Now: $3.60). I thought he was outstanding when resuming over 1400m at Rosehill a few weeks ago, working home strongly from the back to run a narrow second to Tip Top, then went to the Toorak where he was enormous despite being out of his grade behind Land Of Plenty. Back to this level, gee he’s likeable.
I think this run will tell us if 7 Mahalangur (Bet Now: $3.50) has really turned the corner or not. Two wins this time in have been very good. Was keen on him at Randwick and he duly saluted after getting a sweet trip from Tommy. There is more depth to this field and the key to him is to get rolling with clear air, so do they roll forward to sit on speed?
11 Le Juge (Bet Now: $35.00) is an interesting runner. Former French galloper that is having his second Australian prep for Chris Waller. Had three runs in the Summer and didn’t really threaten but the races had more depth than what he faces here. Just the one soft trial on the Synthetic at Warwick Farm, but I think he’s a yard/market watch.
