The Parks track at Morphettville will play host to a nine event meeting on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:51) Holdfast Insurance (bm76) 1400m
4 Aqueduct (Bet Now: $1.60) looks a very promising animal for Michael Hickmott and should continue his winning ways here. 2/2 since coming to Australia, the latest of those wins seeing him absolutely trot up at this track/distance when facing three rivals but the turn of foot he produced from the front was very impressive. Looks the winner once again.
6 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing quite consistently at the moment for the Gordon Richards camp. He ran over the mile on the course proper here two weeks ago and ran his usual honest race. Tried hard, but in a sit/sprint, it was always going to suit the Victorian raider Somerset Maughan and he was too good. Ice Ghost deserves another win and should run well here.
Fitter and up in trip, with relative weight relief, 2 Columbia (Bet Now: $23.00) can be an improver here at odds. He resumed over 1100m a fortnight back on the course proper here and I thought was pretty plain in defeat behind Thompson’s Reward. He hasn’t really fired a shot for a little while, but his best is clearly good enough to win.
Race 2. (13:26) Aami Mdn Plate 1000m
5 Amuri (Bet Now: $3.20) looks a near good thing. Daughter of Zoustar for Team McEvoy that had been jumping out strongly prior to being thrown in the deep end on debut in the Cap D’Antibes at Flemington and she was only beaten 4.5L in what was a race that absolutely smashed the clock and the form has already been franked. Back to maiden grade, she can get this out of the way before heading back to Melbourne and tackling some blacktype.
2 Keep On Bopping (Bet Now: $4.00) will be popular. Phillip Stokes trained colt that was backed as if unbeatable when debuting over 1200m on the course proper here two weeks ago and yes, he did a bit wrong in the run, but overall, thought he had his chance when third to dominant winner and stablemate Quietly Discreet, who bolted up last Saturday to frank the form already. Back to 1000m is interesting but off trials, looks talented.
9 Li’l Piper (Bet Now: $15.00) is a daughter of Ready For Victory that resumes for John Hyam. Hasn’t raced since her debut back in June when doing plenty wrong in the run when fourth to Instant Celebrity, who is the dominant favourite for the Thousand Guineas, so that form reads A1 for a race like this, and her recent trial was quite encouraging.
Race 3. (14:01) Tab Create Your Calendar-bm72 1950m
Think the rise in trip will suit the Team McEvoy trained 4 Allusion (Bet Now: $2.70). Impressive winner over 1550m here first up before having a few weeks off and going to the mile on the course proper where the slow tempo was clearly against him, so be forgiving of his fourth to Somerset Maughan. Fitter, up to 1950m, hard to beat.
5 Darlamax (Bet Now: $4.00) is a hard horse to catch but he’s got talent when he wants to show it, and he wanted to show it a fortnight back when getting the job done here. Stubby had to get really stuck into him but he was strong late in getting the win, just. Not really a horse you can trust to go back-to-back, but this is a winnable race.
2 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $15.00) is 11 years of age for John Hickmott and gee he’s a beauty. Put together two on the bounce before a placing at Murray Bridge. Then raced last Saturday over 2250m here and on face value, he was quite plain, but was found to be lame post race, so there were excuses. Can bounce back here.
Race 4. (14:36) Furphy (bm58) 1000m
4 Alleboom (Bet Now: $3.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Team Jolly trained three year old that ran on Balaklava Cup Day when wide no cover on speed and fought on pretty well in defeat when third to Champagne Affair. That field had depth to it so that form does read well for what looks a thin 58, so I’m in his corner.
2 Rizski (Bet Now: $6.00) should be respected. Ken Sweeney trained gelding that comes through the La Vita race from a fortnight back on the course proper here and he was a real eye catcher, closing off strongly late when third to the well backed mare. If she can sit a pair or two closer in the run this time around, he can take this out.
5 Deevine (Bet Now: $9.00) is a knockout chance. Ryan Balfour trains this gelding, who ran on the course proper here two weeks ago where he looked to get a really good run just off the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t finish it off when fifth to La Vita, the same race Rizski contested. Draws the inside gate and gets Vorster to steer.
Race 5. (15:16) Chalk Hill (bm72) 1000m
2 Taken Off (Bet Now: $3.00) is a progressive animal for the Phillip Stokes that produced a very strong finale from off the speed to win on the Parks track a few weeks ago. Looked in a bit of trouble but Crowther was able to slice her way through the field and the gelding finished best. Harder here, but confident he can measure up.
11 Magic Sunset (Bet Now: $5.50) looks hard to beat for the Will Clarken camp. Had her first run for the new stable over 1000m on the Parks track a few weeks ago and I loved the way she found the line late in the piece when a close up third to a progressive one, Taken Off. Think that form reads well and she should improve off that effort.
1 Port Vale (Bet Now: $27.00) is an interesting runner. Stuart Gower trained gelding that showed good early speed to lead them up when resuming a fortnight back, against his usual pattern, and tired late when down the track behind Thompson’s Reward. He’s better than that and is much better when ridden cold with a bunny to chase.
Race 6. (15:56) Mitch Is Getting Hitched-bm58 1300m
12 Vancity Gem (Bet Now: $3.00) can make it 2/2 here. Daughter of Vancouver for Team McEvoy that debuted on Balaklava Cup Day over 1050m and she was most impressive, sitting off the speed before Vorster angled her into clear air and away she went, spanking them and running good time. Off that, 1300m is fine and looks above average.
9 Al Ma Belle (Bet Now: $20.00) can be a big improver here for the Jaensch camp. Unwanted in betting and a notable drifter when resuming over 1400m at Oakbank and while she was never a winning threat, I thought she made up ground and was a pass mark. Back to 1300m I find interesting but Pannell sticks and draws soft.
6 Trident (Bet Now: $8.00) can be an improver here third up from a spell. He ran over 1200m on the course proper here two weeks ago and was just never a factor from the back but I will say the winner Midships does look above average, so think that form reads okay for a race like this and he comes back up in trip. Knockout chance for an in form stable.
Race 7. (16:36) Terry Howe Printing (bm82) 1250m
5 Seemingly Discreet (Bet Now: $2.50) looks hard to beat here for Phillip Stokes. Resumed four weeks ago over 1000m when backed late with confidence and thought it was a smart ride from Crowther. Didn’t give those near her the chance to cross, kicking up to lead, and when they sat off her, it was game over. Up in trip looks idea and is clearly the one to beat.
7 One More Jack (Bet Now: $3.00) is fitter and up to 1250m, so he’s easily likeable here. Shane Oxlade trained gelding that resumed over 1100m on the course proper where he was near the speed and fought gamely, but condition just gave out late when third to Thompson’s Reward. Second up winner and up in trip, hard to beat.
6 Soul Fire (Bet Now: $18.00) is ten years of age for Michael O’Leary but he’s still maintaining a very healthy zest for racing. That was evident a few weeks ago on the course proper here over 1100m when chasing a good speed from the wide gate and he was brave in running second to an in form Deep Dive. He can win this for sure.
Race 8. (17:16) Spring Racing At Morp. (bm68) 1550m
4 Pearl Bandit (Bet Now: $2.25) is an in form animal for the Macdonald/Gluyas team and now he has another win on the board for this prep, I think he can go right on with it. Market support was strong for him when he raced over the mile on the course proper two weeks ago and he was never getting beat, drawing clear late to win well. Hard to beat once again.
9 Meehni (Bet Now: $2.35) has her share of talent. Has finished runner up her past couple, two back being at this track/distance. Two weeks ago was her next start where she tried hard on the course proper here, but was no match for a very much in form Pearl Bandit. Stable should always be respected and can win for sure without surprising.
1 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $10.00) is a sleeper here. Francis/Kent trained galloper that finds a winnable race here if he found anything near his best, and I think the big thing going for him is drawing gate one, so he does no work, plus with the claim for Jess Eaton, he’s well in and I think is clearly the value runner at nearly double figures.
Race 9. (17:56) Happy 50th Patto (bm68) 1250m
4 Ambidazzle (Bet Now: $9.50) looks ready to do something positive. She’s had a couple of runs back from a spell now and should just about be at peak fitness. Thought her run two weeks ago behind Lakhani Rose was more than a pass mark and she does generally save her best for the Parks track, and Stubby rides her very well. She’ll do me.
13 Carlaluisa (Bet Now: $23.00) is the interesting runner. She was formerly with the Macdonald/Gluyas team but is now under the care of Bordertown trainer James Dodgson. She ran over 1200m on the course proper here two weeks ago and was very good in defeat when third to Midships. Should have finished closer having had not much luck in the straight, but was never beating the impressive winner. Keen to see how she goes for the new stable.
11 Exalted Lauretta (Bet Now: $26.00) has been up forever it seems but she’s a ripper for Grant Young that will put herself on speed and try hard. That was the case a fortnight back but just didn’t have the class to go with them behind Midships, then raced on Sunday at Naracoorte when on speed and tiring late to run fourth. Much better suited against the Mares and can run an improved race at decent odds.
