Nine races will be run and won at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:58) Tab Create Your Calendar 2yo 1000m
9 Stellar Magic (Bet Now: $2.70) on top. Steve O’Dea can produce a nice early juvenile eg Gotta Kiss last season, and I think this girl is similar re being precocious. Trialled at Doomben last Tuesday and what impressed me is the fact she responded instantly when asked for an effort and closed off with purpose to run a narrow second. Runs up to that trial, think she wins.
Les Ross is a well renowned trainer when it comes to his juveniles and from what I saw at Deagon at the trials a couple of Tuesdays back, 8 Mishani Untamed (Bet Now: $4.80) looks the one. She won a 650m trial that morning and led throughout under Ben Thompson, looking to travel sweetly with something in hand. Giving her respect.
6 Yangari (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Spirit Of Boom colt for the Rob Heathcoate team. He’s had the benefit of two trials to get ready, so he’s had a good grounding for this debut. Latest trial came last Tuesday at Doomben where he was off the speed and chasing, but did pick up quite nicely to run second. Bred to be handy so keen to see how he goes.
Race 2. (12:33) Brc Spring Carn. On Sale (78) 2400m
3 Skytrek (Bet Now: $9.50) looks a great each way bet here. Yes, he’s an enigma and can be hard to find, but I reckon he’s flying. Forget the first two runs when back over unsuitable trips in slowly run races. He raced over 1800m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and was a real eye catcher from the back when third to Bajan Gold, who arguably wins the Toowoomba Cup last Saturday with clear air. Up in trip, upside to come, hard to beat.
5 Blacklog (Bet Now: $6.00) can be hit and miss but his best is good enough to be around the mark. He comes through the Fastnet Cyclone race from a fortnight back at the Gold Coast where he was near the speed throughout and there to do damage when asked, but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for fourth. Knockout chance at odds.
9 Fields Of Yulong (Bet Now: $11.00) has had a couple of runs now for the Edmonds camp and is nearing a win I feel. Ran over 2200m at the Sunny Coast just under three weeks back where he got back in the run before peeling wider, trying to make a sustained run, and tried hard, but couldn’t quite see it through. He’ll come on from that and up to 2400m I do like.
Race 3. (13:08) Tingo Tango Hcp 1400m
2 I Am Swerving (Bet Now: $6.00) looks like he will eat up 1400m for the Guy stable. Heavily backed odds on pop when racing in a 1200m maiden here just over two weeks ago and despite a few nervous moments in the straight, he finished best out wide and was strong to and through the line, suggesting a rise in 1400m will suit and has more upside than most.
4 Neutron (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Kacy Fogden trained three year old that is three weeks between runs since resuming over 1350m at Doomben where he looked all over a winner when he loomed, but the race fitness of Safework kicked in and nailed Neutron right on the peg. Should improve off that run and is one of the leading contenders.
8 Safework (Bet Now: $5.50) looks like he will eat up the 1400m for the Scott Morrisey team. Good late two back behind Kisukano before stepping up to 1350m three weeks ago and he really attacked the line late in a driving go to get up and win. He’s racing as if he will be suited with extra ground and what is what he gets here, so hard to beat.
Race 4. (13:43) Souths Sports Club Hcp (c3) 1600m
2 Prospectus (Bet Now: $3.90) on top. Chris Waller trained galloper who has been up a little while but continues to race really well. He ran over 1800m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and I thought Dittman rode the perfect race on him. Just wasn’t good enough when second to Bajan Gold, who was luckless last Saturday in the Toowoomba Cup, so think that form reads well for this.
Toughest test to date here for 6 Scottish Mist (Bet Now: $4.00) but Rob Heathcoate has her flying. She has won three on end, the latest coming over 1400m here just over two weeks back when given a lovely run just off the speed under Ben Thompson before angling into clear air and finishing best in a blanket finish. Little query at 1600m but deserves a shot.
5 Senrima Tide (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing like he will appreciate 1600m. Both runs back from a spell have come at the Gold Coast, the latest over 1400m a fortnight back when off the speed and closing off nicely behind Express Fantasy, finishing fourth. Much prefer him at 1600m and has got upside to come compared to most.
Race 5. (14:18) Kinjite Hcp 1000m
1000m is the A1 trip for 1 Mishani Miss (Bet Now: $3.70) so back to that here, I’m in her corner. Ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago where she did a bit of work to get on speed and that early effort just told late when fourth. She’s a 1000m horse, so expecting her to jump on the bunny and proving hard to get past.
2 Superare (Bet Now: $3.20) is the map horse given he has gate one, will do no work and be strong late. Resumed at this track/distance against the older horses and closed off well without threatening behind Mountbatten. Fitter, back to his own age and while better suited over a bit further, he has a touch of class/quality.
11 Charlie Sphene (Bet Now: $31.00) showed good promise as a 2YO but the wheels have somewhat fallen off as a 3YO. Going to give him one last chance against his own age and at 1000m given his past couple of runs have come against older horses. Last start at Kilcoy he was just under three weeks between runs, so got improvement to come, and best is good enough.
Race 6. (14:57) Captain Sonador Hcp 1000m
7 Pizonie (Bet Now: $3.60) has returned a different horse this time in for Tony Gollan, winning 2/2. Both of those wins have come at this track/distance and each time has smashed the clock in winning. Last run was September 9, so four weeks between runs, but he is a horse who does seem very effective with fresh legs and has a clear liking for Eagle Farm.
2 Usmanov (Bet Now: $2.80) is a short course specialist for the Edmonds camp that will run well once again. Resumed over 900m at the Gold Coast where he was backed with confidence to beat Zoustyle, but that horse was just too nippy from the front and too good. If he can get a suck run just behind the speed, he’ll take some beating.
Back in depth and back in trip I do like for the Tony Gollan trained 6 Invincible Al (Bet Now: $18.00). He resumed over the 1110m at Doomben three weeks ago where he was back near last in the run and was never really a winning threat behind The Odyssey. Finds a much more suitable race this time around and likes racing at Eagle Farm.
Race 7. (15:37) Gallopers Sports Club (rs0mw) 1200m
The pattern is there to suggest that 5 Royal Hale (Bet Now: $3.20) can bounce back. I’d be forgiving of his effort at Doomben three weeks ago given he bucked at the start and that pretty much sealed his fate. When he has more than two weeks between runs, his record reads 7: 3-1-0, and Maloney sticks. He’ll do me here.
6 Fuji Flyer (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Gillian Heinrich trained galloper that has returned in pretty good order. Resumed with a close up second here to Fasano before racing on his home track at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and was game in defeat when third to impressive winner Beaufort Park. Going well and is deserving of a city win.
13 French Ocean (Bet Now: $12.00) looks to be going well. Close up second to the in form Niewand two back at the Gold Coast before racing there again a fortnight back and he was good from the back, albeit never a winning threat, when second to Beaufort Park. He was big odds that day and ran super so has to be respected.
Race 8. (16:17) Lexus Spring Cup Qlty 1400m
Great to see 4 The Harrovian (Bet Now: $3.50) in town and I think he can measure up to these. He’s been doing his recent racing in North Queensland and has simply been too good for them, the latest win seeing him score a dominant win in the Cairns Newmarket and smashed the clock. Draws well, proven weight carrier and I think is the bet of the two big guns.
2 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $1.85) has class/quality and that will carry him a long way. He is five weeks between runs since having his first outing for the Vandyke camp over 1200m here and he was far too good for them, smashing the clock in doing so with something in hand. Tick over trial was quite good and is hard to beat against these.
7 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $46.00) lacks the class of the first two, but he’ll put himself on speed and try quite hard. That was the case when he raced over 1400m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and was pretty brave in defeat I thought when fourth to Run For Glory. He’ll be somewhere near the front and trying hard. Last bit may test.
Race 9. (16:57) L Grimmett The Cat Retire (80) 1800m
2 Seeingisbelieving (Bet Now: $3.50) on top. He’s had a couple of runs for the Tony Gollan camp, the latest coming over the mile here last Wednesday when near the speed throughout and looked to be going quite well before Maloney pushed the button and despite being strongly challenged, he found plenty and was too good. Fitter and up in trip, he’s likeable.
10 Lord Gododdin (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very honest animal for Chris Waller that doesn’t win out of turn but should be around the mark, which is what he was when racing at the Gold Coast two weeks ago. He tried hard and was there to be a winning threat, but no match for the in form Fastnet Cyclone. Hard to beat on the bigger track.
4 Alpine Dancer (Bet Now: $5.00) is looking for a rise in trip and he gets that here. He is three weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Doomben when back in the run and while he was never a winning threat, he made up ground and was good in defeat when fourth to Canapes. Extra ground, bigger track, finding positive form, he’s a knockout chance.
