29/9/2018 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Mornington, Ansett Classic Day

Mornington will host their traditional Grand Final meeting this Saturday where the feature race is the Ansett Classic (2400m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

3 Royal Music (Bet Now: $2.10) for me but it’s really a race I don’t want to get involved in. Darren Weir trains this five year old, who is three weeks between runs since winning over 2000m at Morphettville. Netherfield looked to have the race won but this bloke kept finding and the photo went his way. I think that’s the right form.

1 Pioneertown (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained stayer who comes back to 2000m after a couple of 2500m outings at the Valley, winning one before finishing midfield behind Tiffany’s Lass. Fresh, back in trip is a bit of an unknown for him but looks to get a good run on speed and should haev hard residual fitness.

6 Mystical Spirit (Bet Now: $7.00) is a bit of a query at the trip but I reckon Darren Weir has him going quite well. Australian debut behind Octabello at Ballarat was quite good before going to Cranbourne last Wednesday where the bob of the head just didn’t go his way when beaten a lip by Melba’s Maestro. Did run okay at 2000m when racing in the UK. Want to give him a chance at the trip under Weir.

1 Wall Street Wolf (Bet Now: $17.00) is the big watch. Logan McGill trains this former Hayes/Dabernig runner who is having start one for McGill. He’s got the class to win, clearly, but upstairs there’s always been issues. He looked very good in a recent jump out win here, and for mine looks forward enough for a first up win.

11 Heavenward (Bet Now: $3.60) is ticking over quite well this time in for Shaun Dwyer. Ran over 1100m at Tatura last Saturday where he attempted to lead all the way but just copped too much pressure in front and was grabbed late by Millie The Missile. Should lead these and back to 1000m looks ideal for this gelding.

If they overdo it in front, look for 10 World Of Hope (Bet Now: $21.00) to be flashing late. She was a month between runs when racing over 1000m at Cranbourne on a bog where she got back and couldn’t come on at all behind Enigman. Depth here doesn’t look as strong and any rain about will help her chances.

6 Patricia Anne (Bet Now: $6.50) for me. Mitch Freedman trains this mare, who resumed over 1400m at Casterton and you had to like her effort, finishing her race off with real purpose late when second to the in form Under Oath. Normally gets better as the prep gets deeper, so the resumption looks to be a positive sign for her.

8 Lady Cromac (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Kevin Corstens trained mare who has really turned her career around since coming to Victoria from NSW. She ran over 1400m at Morphettville last time and worked home strongly late in the piece to run a narrow second to Flop. Just has to tick the 1500m box, and off last start, she should.

This is certainly the easiest race that 2 Sensation Ally (Bet Now: $15.00) has contested in some time, with her last few runs being on city tracks, the latest at Morphettville when down the track behind Flop. Good record on her home track, and though drawn wide, she has a touch of class on these and Mott steers.

4 Wassergeist (Bet Now: $7.50) just has to be somewhere near his best and he’ll be winning. Classy animal for the Busuttin/Young team who hasn’t raced since May when finishing down the track at Sandown behind Fifty Stars, but did pull up lame. Trial win at Cranbourne looked outstanding, Nolen remains on…looks a great bet.

D-Day for 3 Spirit Of Aquada (Bet Now: $5.50). Desperately unlucky not to beat Bryan two back at Caulfield before racing over this track/distance and though he didn’t really get clear air, I thought he was a touch disappointing behind Moonlover. He’s better than that, so I’d be willing to give him one more chance.

14 Stornaway (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Robbie Laing trained galloper who comes back to the six furlongs after racing over the mile at Cranbourne back in late August where I thought Melissa Julius gave the gelding a peach of a ride. Just didn’t get the win with Hunboshi nailing him in the last stride. If they fo hard in front, he’ll be strong at the end.

Was keen on Smokin Bella but with her out, I’ll go with 9 Aeecee Tong De (Bet Now: $5.00). The WaterBott stable trains this mare, who comes to Victoria off the back of a run on the Kensington track at Randwick where she was pretty good in defeat I thought behind Savvan. Hoping Zac Spain can ping the lids from the wide gate, lead and take beating.

3 Josephine Sea (Bet Now: $5.00) is an Ellerton/Zahra trained mare who I think is ticking over quite well. Have to forgive her last start over this track/distance where she had no luck, seemingly with plenty to offer, behind Rewarding Laughter. Proven city horse at her best and she was four weeks between runs last time. Should improve off that.

13 Uptown Gal (Bet Now: $12.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates for Robbie Laing, largely due to her racing pattern. Got a mile back off them last time over 1100m at Sale but loved the way she let down behind Elam, and was a bit unlucky in the end with not much room late. If the breaks go her way, she can win.

Not sure Mornington is his track, but on class alone, 5 Steel Prince (Bet Now: $3.70) looks the horse to beat. Took a while to get a win on the board but it came a couple of Wednesdays back over this trip at Bendigo when given a lovely patient ride from Yendall, who got the horse clear air at the right time and the horse responded under hard riding. That 2800m race on Cup Day would seemingly be ideal for him, but he should take beating here.

I reckon 11 Prescience (Bet Now: $11.00) has come back really well. Chris Waller trains this stayer, who comes through a 2400m race at Randwick at the midweeks last time where Bowman rode a pretty ugly race, largely by design given the bias that day, and for the most part, it worked. The stablemate Cormac was just too good. Third up, he should be ready.

The rise to 2400m will definitely suit 12 Truly High (Bet Now: $12.00). Bolted up over 2100m at Sandown two back before going to the 2200m at Sale where he just took an absolute eternity to wind up but I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Chilean Wonder, who ran well again to frank that form. More depth, but the extra trip looks ideal.

This looks an ideal race for 5 Harrison (Bet Now: $4.50), a Team Williams trained import who has been pretty good since coming to Australia. Two runs back from a spell have been quite encouraging, the latest over 2040m at the Valley when midfield behind Trap For Fools. Third up last prep, he bolted up over 2400m at Bendigo, so the pattern is there for him to springboard here.

11 Haripour (Bet Now: $4.60) gets a great chance to get some blacktype next to his name. He ran over 2400m on the Parks track a couple of weeks ago and for a few strides he looked in trouble behind slow ponies but once Symons got the split, he dashed and the horse won impressively. His two runs have been outstanding at the trip and he should only improve.

2 Happy Moment (Bet Now: $12.00) is such an intriguing runner. Former Japanese runner making his Australian debut for the Anthony Freedman team, purchased with the Cups in mind. His Japanese form does read quite well, most notably in the Diamond Stakes behind Fame Game. Haven’t minded his two trials leading in and clearly has class.

8 Ruomaza (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Darren Weir trained gelding who made his Australian debut over 1400m at Bendigo a couple of Wednesdays back where he settled well off the pace before Melham got the splits and the gelding burst through to surge hard late and grab the win. Off that, no issue with 1500m. Just needs to take improvement from that because there is depth here.

10 Hell On Earth (Bet Now: $13.00) is a veteran who looks to be going pretty well this prep. Shawn Mathrick trains this gelding, who was heavily backed when winning at Morphettville two back before racing there again and running a game fourth to the in form mare Star Patriot. Bit more depth here, but he’s hard fit, in form and always respect the stable.

4 Oscar’s My Mate Pa (Bet Now: $26.00) isn’t the most brilliant horse going around but one thing he does do is try hard. Have to put a line through his last start at Morphettville given he missed the start then was asked to punch forward and by the time he got to the home turn, he was gone. If he jumps, he should lead and he’ll give a sight at odds.

NEXT BEST: Race Eight Number 8 Ruomaza

LONG SHOT: Race Two Number 1 Wall Street Wolf
