Eight races have been assembled for Belmont this Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:53) Tabtouch - Better Your Bet Maiden 1650m
9 Friar’s Moon (Bet Now: $3.50) for me but it’s a bludger of a race to start the day. This mare has finished runner up at her past two, the latest over the mile at Northam behind Oriental Rose, who was a city placegetter prior to that, so the form reads well, she has upside and draws a good gate. Happy to be in her corner.
8 Duck Duck Goose (Bet Now: $2.45) is on the seven day back up for the Lindsey Smith stable after racing over 1200m here last Saturday where you could say she was held up a bit but for mine I thought she had her chance to get the job done, getting bloused late by Argoon. Up to the mile quickly is a query, but ability wise, she’s a key threat clearly.
13 Karijini Blue (Bet Now: $126.00) is a Steven Ryan trained mare who ran in a 1350m maiden at Toodyay last time where she looked to do plenty wrong but I liked the way she found the line when fourth to Teacher’s Pet. Up to the mile does look ideal for this girl and while she lacks the class, she could fill a first four spot.
Race 2. (15:31) Happy 90th Leo Loughnan Plate 1200m
Very interesting race but I’ll side with 6 Dance Music (Bet Now: $1.65), 2/2 to start her career for Simon Miller, and both wins she’s been quite sharp. The latest win came over this track/distance when leading throughout and bolting up. More depth here, but looks to have a touch of brilliance and Pike remains on.
5 Final Hearing (Bet Now: $19.00) is a close relation to Disposition for Team Williams who debuted here last Wednesday and defied an alarming betting drift where he opened odds on and got to as much as $6. Despite that alarming fluc, he got the job done under hard riding from Pike. He jumps off, which is the query, but looks talented.
2 Pablo’s Poem (Bet Now: $3.90) looks a nice type for the Sean Casey team. Narrow defeat fresh over this track/distance before stepping back to 1000m where he was on speed and under hard riding, he eventually wore down Agent Pippa. Back up to 1200m does suit this three year old and has hard race fitness.
Race 3. (16:11) The Merrywell Handicap (1MW) 1200m
I wan to take a chance on the Justin Warwick trained 9 Route Eighty Eight (Bet Now: $15.00). To the eye, she’s been quite poor this time in both runs, but I think she’s had excuses each start. Not sure the sticky track was too her liking fresh before getting back from the wide gate and not coming on. Draws better and Lucy jumps on, which is a lead I think.
2 Presentatie (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Martin Allan trained mare who has been quite good since joining the stable. Has finished runner up in both outings this prep, starting at Kalgoorlie before racing over 1300m here three weeks and just missing out on picking up Bold Success, who was most unlucky last Saturday. That reads well for this.
5 Miss Sondrio (Bet Now: $41.00) could be a big improver here. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago where she got a mile back off the speed and didn’t get into the race at all behind Mantime. Draws a much better gate this time around and the big key is the blinkers going on for the first time. That could spark her into action.
Race 4. (16:51) Western Racepix Handicap (72+) 1000m
She’s been a bit costly this time in but this does look the perfect race for 7 How To Fly (Bet Now: $2.80). Been on her back each start this prep and has been quite good without winning. Latest run came over this track/distance two weeks ago where he was pipped late by Lockroy. Gets a decent weight pull on that horse and draws much better.
5 Dia De La Raza (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Vaughn Sigley trained gelding who comes here from the Lockroy race mentioned above where he was up on speed throughout but the pressure looked quite strong and he just couldn’t quite finish it off when running fifth. If he doesn’t do as much work this time around, he can win.
If they do go hard, look for 2 I Am Incredible (Bet Now: $23.00) to be strong at the end. Comes through the Lockroy race also where he was a little unlucky not to finish closer, getting held up early on in the straight when seemingly going well. If the breaks go his way, he can improve off last start for sure and can place.
Race 5. (17:30) Kirin Megumi Handicap (1MW) 1650m
The safe option looks to be the Adam Durrant trained 3 Reveille (Bet Now: $2.80). Has been quite good in three runs this prep, finishing runner up at her past two. The latest of those second places came at this track/distance a fortnight ago when just failing to get the win, falling at the hands of Dark Prospect. Good gate and Pile on, he’ll do me.
5 Mycroft (Bet Now: $7.00) a definite threat for mine. Ross Price trains this gelding, who ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where he got off the pace and worked home quite strongly late to run second to Double Digit. Gets a really good draw this time and blinkers on first time should see him take some beating.
6 Yindi (Bet Now: $6.50), I think, is the best horse in the race, but just can’t quite put it together at the moment. Racing for the third week in a row after racing at the two previous Saturdays where he has been okay without setting the world on fire. Perhaps up to the mile will suit him but he’s getting close to D-Day.
Race 6. (18:05) Tabtouch Masters Handicap (72+) 1400m
4 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $4.50) look a great bet here if she naturally progresses from the resumption. Resumed over this track/distance a fortnight ago where she was heavily backed but unfortunately for her backers, she was caught wide no cover and wanted to pull hard. She did a mighty job to get as close as she did to knocking off Great Again. Better luck/manners this time and she’ll just about be winning.
6 Miracle Man (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented son of Viscount resuming for the Adam Durrant stable. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Autumn where he won a feature race at Ascot before some solid efforts subsequent. Good fresh record and looks ready to go off the back of a couple of barrier trials. Has a bit of class/quality here.
3 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $10.00) is on the seven day back up for the Colin Webster team after racing over the mile here last Saturday where he had a good run near the speed but for mine I think he just didn’t get the trip and whacked away late behind Rockon Tommy. Back to 1400m, he can easily bounce back.
Race 7. (18:40) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1MW) 1200m
7 West Fifty Fourth (Bet Now: $5.50) for me. Chris Gangemi trains this gelding, who is three weeks between runs since racing over 1000m here where he was wide no cover and fought on strongly in defeat behind Tripeletto. I think the 1200m will be okay, he draws much better and gets the blinkers off/winkers on. Likeable.
9 Mr Undercover (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Glenn McTaggart trained gelding who trialled up well prior to resuming over this track/distance last Wednesday where I thought Pike ride the gelding an absolute treat, getting the beaut sit just off the pace before getting the split and pouncing at the right time to get the win. Not quite as dynamic second up but Pike sticks.
5 Ouqba Jack (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Ouqba resuming for the Parnham stable. This bloke had a pretty solid Autumn/Winter prep, winning a couple of races, including a win over 1400m here. Can sprint well fresh and has trialled well leading up to his resumption. Bit of rain won’t alter his chances either.
Race 8. (19:15) Glenroy Chaff Handicap (66+) 2100m
5 Queen Bey (Bet Now: $3.80) for me in the get out. This mare is over three weeks between runs since racing over 2200m at Northam where she looked a good thing on paper and Pike rode her accordingly, getting the suck run near the rail before angling into clear and her class came to the fore. Yet to be proven in town, but this is such a winnable race.
9 Bergio (Bet Now: $6.00) should love the step up in trip. Ran over 2000m here a fortnight ago and I thought first try at the trip, his effort was a beauty the way he closed off to run a narrow second to Five Degrees. Should get run of the race stuff from gate one. The only negative I can see is Pike has jumped off.
15 Young Thor (Bet Now: $9.00) will appreciate the step back up in trip I think. He was 2200-2000 in the Five Degrees race mentioned above where I thought he tried hard after getting the 1/1 sit but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for fourth. I think back up to 2100m, he’ll be better off and is on the minimum.
