The Sunshine Coast will host their biggest race day this Saturday where we will see three blacktype races, the Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m), the Caloundra Cup (2400m) and the Glasshouse Handicap (1400m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:48) Bruce McLachlan Classic 1000m
Big fan of 6 Jeweliana (Bet Now: $4.20) for Steve O’Dea. This filly was an impressive debut winner at the track/distance before going the 1100m at Ipswich two weeks ago when given a lovely ride from McGillivray and despite taking a little while to get into her work, she was very good late and got the job done. Back to the scene of her debut win, she’s one of the hardest to beat.
Back to 1000m is probably not idea for the Matty Dunn trained 11 Karaja (Bet Now: $2.20) but the big tick is getting to a bigger track. Tardy start cost her dearly first up at Ipswich when well supported, giving away a decent head start straight away but she finished off very strongly to run third. Can sit near the speed if she jumps clean and if that happens, she’ll be dangerous.
4 Raging Pole (Bet Now: $13.00) is a few weeks between runs for the Tony Sears stable after getting the maiden win out of the way last time out at Doomben. Did a power of work in the run on speed and was there to be beaten, but found plenty late to cling on and win. That was his first run in a few weeks, so would like to assume he’s got upside left. Hopefully that last run hasn’t busted him.
Race 2. (13:23) XXXX Handicap 1000m
2 Tycoon Ace (Bet Now: $3.00) has been a real model of consistency this time in for the Tony Sears camp. He is four weeks between runs since racing in the Lightning at Doomben where he got well back in the run but finished off strongly to get within a half length of beating Plague Stone. Not sure how strong that form is, but he’s a very reliable horse and creeping up in the weights no issue.
1 Tarzan (Bet Now: $3.20) is an absolute beauty for Stuart Kendrick who has a fab record on his home track and once again finds a very winnable 1000m race, which he found last time out and under regular rider Luke Tarrant, he absolutely bolted in. Likely does work to find a spot near the speed, but can do that and still be effective, and is a proven weight carrier.
Don’t be surprised to see an improved showing from the Team Guy mare 3 Volkoff (Bet Now: $16.00). She hasn’t raced since May 18 when down the track in the Chief De Beers behind Isaurian where she was well held but far from disgraced. Good record with fresh legs and her recent Gold Coast trial looked more than encouraging. Another that will appreciate a good speed.
Race 3. (13:58) The Wolf Mooloolaba Handicap (85) 1600m
4 Savacool (Bet Now: $2.40) has the upside and the quality to win this. Thought her first up run behind Star Of The Seas was a pass mark before going to the Wayne Wilson where she got a mile back in the run but loved the way she found the line late behind Vinland. Third up at 1600m at this level, she appeals big time given she’s got a fair amount of upside compared to some here who are at the end of their prep.
5 Queen Of Kingston (Bet Now: $4.50) is in a real purple patch of form for the Daniel Bowen stable, winning her past two impressively. First win came in the Beef Week Cup at Casino before stepping up to the mile at Ipswich where she was there to be beaten late by Silvera but knuckled down strongly and got the win. Very reliable mare who will run her usual honest race.
1600m is a query for 10 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $12.00) but hard to knock the way she’s racing. This Matty Kropp trained mare was very well specked when racing over 1350m at Ipswich two weeks ago and under a lovely steer from McGillivray, she was far too good for her rivals. If she can stretch that to the mile, she’s in the mix, but yet to be proven at the trip in two outings.
Race 4. (14:37) BOQ Maroochydore Handicap (75) 1400m
I think he’s a bet here 12 Victory Eight (Bet Now: $10.00), especially on a track where he generally saves his best. He comes through the Rosie Posie race from two weeks back at Ipswich where he ran a beauty in defeat, sitting back in the run and finding the line well to run third. His best generally is saved for the Sunny Coast so the fact he ran well at Ipswich last time tells me the horse is going extra well.
Interesting that Will Clarken scratched 10 Bella Success (Bet Now: $4.00) from an easier race at Eagle Farm on Wednesday in preference for this harder assignment. This mare had her first run for the stable over 1350m at Doomben where she finished best from the back and despite wandering about late, she was too good. Fitter and 1400m on the bigger track looks a good set up.
13 Akage (Bet Now: $15.00) comes through the Rosie Posie at Ipswich and I thought this Brian Crowley runner was good in defeat after getting a fair way back in the run. Has been thereabouts in each run this time in but I think the key to him is finding a track with give in it because he might just be looking for it. Not sure he wins, but definitely include in multiples.
Race 5. (15:17) Winter Provincial Final (80) 1200m
11 Removal (Bet Now: $8.00) hasn’t done much wrong this prep for the John Smerdon stable. This gelding ran over 1100m at Toowoomba last start when lumping 61kg but to counter that had gate one where he took advantage of it, settling just off the speed, before Maloney shoved into the clear and he tried hard but couldn’t get past Bella Occhi. With weight relief and up to 1200m, he appeals.
7 Tardis (Bet Now: $4.50) is a mare in really good form for Toby Edmonds, winning her last two, the latest coming at this track/distance on May 31 when on speed and proving far too good for her rivals in a pretty dominant display. The run prior behind Sofie’s Gold Class was a beauty and her time in winning last start was pretty good for the day, so in a tricky race, I’ll be giving her serious respect.
8 Hi Harry (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained gelding who resumed in the Tardis race from May 31 here where he was a fair way back in run and spotted Tardis a decent start but got out and worked to the line strongly to run second, with the specking at odds being right that he’d run well. Would like to think there is room to improve and if so, he’s a clear threat.
Race 6. (15:57) Sunshine Coast Guineas 1600m
She looks a great bet does 11 Zavance (Bet Now: $13.00). I think Team Snowden has this filly absolutely flying and is finally getting out to a trip. Has been really competitive at the 1400m-1500m distance range at her past couple but has found it too short, but attacked the line with real purpose, the latest two weeks ago behind Nicci’s Gold. Now out to 1600m on the big track, really keen on her.
2 Junipal (Bet Now: $4.00) should eat up the mile here third up for the Maher/Eustace stable. Thought his run in the Queensland Guineas a beauty. Just got left flat footed when the sprint went on but balanced up late and was strong at the end behind Kolding and that form has been ticked off with Pohutukawa going within a lip of winning the Tatts Tiara. Big track, mile, third up…looks his race.
1 Leonardo Da Hinchi (Bet Now: $8.00) certainly has the talent and form from the Spring to be beating these, but he just hasn’t put in this prep, albeit he has contested races that have been, overall, stronger than what he faces here. Comes through the Queensland Guineas when wide no cover for the trip and battled away okay in defeat behind Kolding. If he runs to his best, he probably wins. But rather than back to win.
Race 7. (16:33) Caloundra Cup 2400m
4 Saunter Boy (Bet Now: $5.00) should be fit and ready to go. He looked to be going like the winner in the Winter Cup two weeks ago under Jason Collett and loomed, but I think his condition just gave out late when a close up fifth to Destiny’s Kiss. His form overseas was over a decent staying trip, so he gets to that here and does have a stack of upside compared to most.
1 Big Duke (Bet Now: $2.45) is on the seven day back up for the Kris Lees stable after contesting the Tatts Cup last Saturday where it was a strongly run 3000m contest and he had his chance to win, but was no match for the very impressive staying performance from the three year old Vow And Declare. Back to 2400m looks no issue and depth is clearly weaker than last Saturday.
11 Terra Sancta (Bet Now: $10.00) gets another chance for me. Liked her at odds in the Ipswich Cup two weeks ago and her run was just funny. One stage, she looked like she was struggling. Next moment, she looked to be trucking and peeled out looking the winner, but as soon as that thought was had, she just whacked away. Bigger track and 2400m should help her cause and did win 2/2 at the track this time last year.
Race 8. (17:10) Glasshouse Handicap 1400m
13 Snitch (Bet Now: $21.00) is absolutely flying for Tony Gollan I think. He was three weeks between runs when contesting the Eye Liner and I thought his run was very good when fourth to Man Booker given he drew barrier one and I’m not sure that was his right set up. 1400m on a bigger track and hopefully outside horses will be more to his liking and I reckon he’s a decent each way gamble.
4 Chapter And Verse (Bet Now: $6.50) has had a mixed Winter Carnival for Desleigh Forster. After his first up spank job at Eagle Farm, he looked a legitimate Stradbroke contender, but things didn’t quite go to plan and instead he went to the Eye Liner where he was back near last on the rail and seemingly in a hopeless spot, but loved the way he attacked the line when clear. 1400m at the Sunny Coast should suit him.
8 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $8.00) is the query. Toby Edmonds trains this mare and she trialled like an absolute bomb prior to the start of the prep, where she was really poor in her first two runs for the campaign hence why she started big odds in the Dane Ripper last time, but in defeat behind subsequent Tatts Tiara winner Invincibella, her run was outstanding. Repeats that here and she’ll go close.
Race 9. (17:50) Nine: Access Insulation Handicap 1200m
6 Winter Passage (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Stuart Kendtrick trained filly who was the subject of good support when resuming at Ipswich and I think the move was on the mark despite the filly finishing midfield. She had no luck in the straight when having something to offer and should have finished much closer. Run under the belt and now on her home track, she’s hard to beat.
16 Tambo’s Mate (Bet Now: $3.50) looks a smart animal for Stuart Kendrick. Looked a good thing on paper when resuming at Doomben last Wednesday and that certainly proved to be the case with the three year old dashing clear late to beat the older horses comfortably. On his home track and drawn out, which should be ideal at race nine on a heavy track. Hard to beat.
15 Million (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Thomas Lunney trained gelding who hasn’t raced for eight weeks since surprising many with a placing in the Gold Coast Guineas behind Pennino. Not sure he was the third best horse in the race but he was the third best horse in handling the bottomless surface, something we may get here, and he does run well when produced with fresh legs.
