A nine race card has been assembled for Rosehill this Saturday where the Civic Stakes (1350m) is the drawcard. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

BetEasy tab

Race 1. (11:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1400m

Back Me

1 Mr Wong (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) has returned in really good order for the Stephen Jones team. Was hard in the market when resuming over 1000m at Muswellbrook and sprouted wings late to get the job done. He then ran in the Highway at Randewick three weeks ago when chasing hard all the way but had to settle for a narrow second. Third up at 1400m, he looks really hard to beat.

13 Refire (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Epaulette for Danny Williams who has promised a fair bit since day one but hadn’t really delivered on that promise til last start at Goulburn in a maiden where he was a notable drifter in betting late but under Mitch Bell, he cut the corner while other riders wanted to get wider, got the dream inside run and the horse dashed right away. Don’t think he beat much, but now he has a confidence boosting win next to his name, he could go on with it.

Long Shot

12 Think Like A Fox (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a Danny Williams trained mare who has been somewhat of a let down for punters throughout her career but I don’t think another win isn’t too far away. Ran over 1400m on her home track at Goulburn last time where she got a fair way back in the run but finished off very strongly to run second. Truly run 1400m will suit her ideally and is one of many winning chances.

Race 2. (12:05) Kensei Handicap 2000m

Back Me

2 So You Win (Bet Now: $1.75 TOP ODDS) does look the safe option here. Four year old who has won his past two in impressive fashion, both coming over 1800m here, with the latest being two weeks ago when sitting off a good speed before Collett presented him clear air and he finished to score. Even despite remaining at 1800m he was too good so back up to 2000m he looks hard to beat.

6 White Boots (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a tough customer for Kim Waugh who was a month between runs when racing in the So You Win from a fortnight back where he was near the speed throughout under Robbie Dolan and tried hard, but had no answers for the turn of foot of the Waller galloper but stayed on well to run second. 2000m should be fine and hopefully has room for improvement.

Long Shot

I reckon 4 Articus (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is going well for Kris Lees. He too comes through the So You Win race. He had the back of the winner and looked to be going quite well but just couldn’t match the turn of foot produced by the winner, plus he wanted to lay in under pressure. Convinced he’s going well and now he’s hard fit, I think up to 2000m will suit this imported galloper.

Race 3. (12:40) Winter Racing Handicap (74) 1400m

Back Me

8 Think Free (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented filly for Kris Lees who was given a few weeks off after being outclassed in the Princess Stakes at the Sunny Coast before going to Newcastle over 1300m where she sat off a good speed before Louise Day angled her into clear air and she charged to the line to score a good win against the older horses. Fitter, gets Blake Shinn and a soft gate. Likeable.

1 Phaistos (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained gelding who has won 2/3 this time in, the latest coming over 1200m at Kembla when heavily backed and the bets were landed as he put away a near city class field with a bit of ease, winning by just under four lengths and running really good time in the process. Harder here, but like the way he’s going about it.

Long Shot

10 Isilmo (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is just under three weeks between runs for the James Cummings stable since getting the lovely sit off the pace against the older horses and finishing best to win. That form on paper might not read great, but there’s been three subsequent winners from the race, so that’s ticked off well and truly, draws soft again and a wet track should be fine.

Race 4. (13:15) Hyland EOFY Sale Handicap (78) 1800m

Back Me

13 Celtic Love (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) on top. Marc Conners trains this mare, who was specked at the big odds when racing over 1500m here a fortnight ago where she got back in the run before coming very wide in the straight and finishing off hard when third to Nicci’s Gold, producing the best late splits of the race. Can sit closer in the run from the draw, gets the claim for Weir and this race last year, she should have won but had no luck.

10 Waking Moment (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) may want a bit further than this and more fitness under the belt, but it was hard to miss her first up run behind Nicci’s Gold two weeks ago. She was $151 but she ran a beauty in defeat, closing off well between runners without a whole lot of room. I think a bigger track and 2000m+ will be her go, but against the mares still, she’ll run well with natural improvement.

Long Shot

4 Ivy’s Court (Bet Now: $51.00 TOP ODDS) is ticking over nicely for Chris Waller and there is a win in her this prep. Not sure it’s here, but don’t want her to go around without me. Bit one paced over the 1500m here two weeks back but did close off okay nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be for the meeting. 2000m+ will suit her better, but I wouldn’t be shocked if she ran well here.

Race 5. (13:50) Stayers Cup 3200m

Back Me

I reckon 4 Doukhan (Bet Now: $7.50) is a really good gamble here. Getting on in years for Kris Lees but his 3200m form is just better than these. Two back was very good in the Sydney Cup behind Shraaoh before being freshened up and racing over 2400m at Randwick when back with the 62kg and he was never a winning threat behind Fanciful Toff. Two miles, give in the track, weight relief…he looks well placed.

The horse on the up is 9 Terwilliker (Bet Now: $4.50) for Anthony Cummings. He made them look like camels two back at Gosford over 2600m before racing over 2400m at Randwick where he was off the bit a fair way out but kept chasing and was good in defeat when second to Fanciful Toff. I think 3200m will be no issue for him, down in the weights, upside and does look a pure stayer.

Long Shot

1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute marvel for Joe Pride and comes into this in winning form having just got the job done at big odds two weeks ago in the Winter Cup, just edging out Yogi in a tight go to the line. He has run well at two miles before, and in fact placed in this race last year. He’ll run the trip out no issue and be strong at the end. Definite winning chance.

Race 6. (14:25) TAB Rewards Handicap (78) 1200m

Back Me

1 Drachenfels (Bet Now: $8.00) is flying for Bjorn Baker and is clearly knocking on the door to win a race. Ran over 1100m here two weeks ago and like first up, just had no luck in the run and should have finished closer behind Albumin. Convinced he’s going really well and the key to him is keeping him to the sprint trips. Got a brilliant finishing burst. Hoping the luck goes his way.

14 River Bird (Bet Now: $4.20) was well specked to win when racing here two weeks ago and with the lightweight thanks to the claim for Jenny Duggan, this filly fought hard on speed and when challenged she dug in and got the job done narrowly but impressively. Creeping up in the weights, but that was good to see given she was disappointing the start prior. Think she’s turned the corner.

Long Shot

8 Handle The Truth (Bet Now: $6.00) comes through the River Bird race from two weeks ago where he got the 1/1 sit under McDougall and looked to travel well in the run and into the straight, but first up against race fit gallopers, he was just found out late but stuck to the task pretty well in defeat. 1200m against this lot should be fine for him and should improve with the run under the belt.

Race 7. (15:05) Civic Stakes 1350m

Back Me

Want to give 10 Gaulois (Bet Now: $5.50) another chance. Was really keen on him in the Eye Liner with the only concern being would he handle Ipswich and you only needed one run to confirm that indeed he didn’t. First up run was one of the runs of the meeting off a slow tempo so back to a bigger track, third up from a spell with cushion in the surface, he does appeal.

Third up, 4 Firsthand (Bet Now: $5.00) should just about be ready. Was good first up at Caulfield behind Order Of Command before going to the Flemington 1400m three weeks ago where he got back and was okay without jumping up and down behind Blazejowski. He did win third up last prep at this track and his two runs back have been encouraging. Just hope he jumps clean.

Long Shot

The genuine give in the track should suit the Kris Lees trained 11 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $21.00). This mare ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where the tempo was clearly against her, but she didn’t stop chasing and was quite good in defeat behind Passage Of Time. The key to her is getting onto a track with genuine give in it, and that’s what she will get here, so she’s a definite winning chance.

Race 8. (15:45) Everest Carnival Hospitality Handicap (94) 1100m

Back Me

Think with the lightweight and likely good speed, think this race sets up really well for the James Cummings trained 11 Wagner (Bet Now: $5.50). Luck certainly didn’t go his way two back during the Scone Carnival but he bounced back to winning form over this track/distance three weeks ago when sitting off a fast speed and grabbing Spiritual Pursuit late, with that filly franking the form big time last Saturday. Similar set up for this gelding here and he’ll take some holding out, especially off the back of a lovely tick over trial last week.

1 Bon Amis (Bet Now: $3.00) is the best horse in the race by some distance but is creeping up in the weights and at this level, that will be a tough ask but his first up run in the June Stakes at Randwick was a beauty, beating all bar Deprive in a driving go to the line. Outstanding record at the Rosehill 1100m and just has to contend with the weight rise to prove hard to beat.

Long Shot

13 Gongs (Bet Now: $7.00) is a stablemate of Wagner who will be another suited by a good speed. She appreciated a decent clip over 1200m at Randwick three weeks ago and despite being in inferior ground, she finished best and was too good. Gets really good weight relief now and I think a fast run 1100m will be right up her alley. Query will be can she repeat the dose.

Race 9. (16:25) Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (78) 1500m

Back Me

Think it will take a good one to knock off the Jason Coyle trained 11 Nicohet (Bet Now: $5.00), who looks to have returned in excellent order. Has finished second to Kapajack here in both runs back from a spell and while well held by that horse, he has beaten the rest of the field comfortably. Not badly treated at the weights, 1500m a big tick, good speed engaged and no Kapajack, he’s the one to beat.

7 Pumpkin Pie (Bet Now: $6.50) hasn’t won in over two years but is not far off a win. Looked as if she’d break the run of outs here a fortnight back when looming large to win when presented, but she couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a narrow second to Nicci’s Gold. if she holds that form here, she’s a chance…just not 100% sure she’s got that desire to win.

Long Shot

14 Travancore (Bet Now: $7.50) has had three runs for Clare Cunningham and the gelding looks to be going really well. Ran over 1550m last Wednesday at Canterbury when getting a lovely steer from Jason Collett, driving hard late to get the win and producing the best late splits of the race. I reckon this distance range sees him out so back to 1500m no issue and stable should be respected when they bring them to Saturday grade.
