A bumper nine race card has been assembled for Warrnambool on Sunday where it is Jericho Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Jericho Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Jericho Cup
Race 1. (12:40) Harry Bell Mdn Plate 1400m
With 5 Typhoon Storm (Bet Now: $3.00). I thought she was excellent on debut over 1400m at Warrnambool. Was back near last in the run and those in front were taking her nowhere when it came to chasing down the two tearaway leaders, so Declan Bates went wider and the filly built up good momentum, clocking good late splits, until her conditin gave out the last 150m. Was a super debut and from the gate, I hope it’s used, she can stalk key market threats and be strong at the end.
2 Swift Sure (Bet Now: $2.50) looks the main threat. Price/Kent trained son of Vancouver that debuted in the same race that Typhoon Moon contested. He had a suck off the speed nearer the inside between runners before getting clear late and working home strongly to run second, ahead of Typhoon Moon. Think that filly will stalk Swift Sure and potentially get last look so will he be strong enough?
6 Wanalirri (Bet Now: $9.00) gets the Blinkers on first time and can be an improver here. Hasn’t raced since October 22 at Ballarat when midfield where she was just fair without jumping up and down. On exposed form, couldn’t back her to win with confidence, but gets Blinkers on and on the home track, could improve to sneak a first four spot.
Race 2. (13:15) Michael Shanahan Mdn Plate 1200m
Lindsey Smith with a first starter on a big day at Warrnambool looks a good recipe and the stable has 6 Zoudini (Bet Now: $3.80) on debut. Zoustar four year old that jumped out earlier in the month at Mortlake where he moved well alongside some well performed gallopers namely Tavisan and Merited. Early market support suggests he’s ready to go and I’m with him as well.
5 Sword Of Freedom (Bet Now: $2.80) is a stablemate of Zoudini who does have race experience and fitness on his side. Resumed over 1400m when on speed and tried hard, but just felt the pinch late when fourth. Gets the Blinkers off and back to 1200m, can see him rolling forward and proving hard to get past. Market will be interesting.
2 Kardinia (Bet Now: $18.00) will put himself on speed and trying hard. He ran over 1400m at Terang last Friday when near the front but the 1400m found him out, plus the winner looks smart, as did the runner up, so think that form reads well. He’ll likely go around $20+ and that might be a touch of overs. One for multiples.
Race 3. (13:50) Apco Service Stations (bm58) 1700m
3 Toorak Playboy (Bet Now: $5.50) looks ready to win third up from a break. Harry Coffey gave him a plum steer at Wangaratta last start and loomed to win. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up third to Rhythmic Queen. His third up record on paper is poor, but they have all been races which were much, much stronger than this.
11 Be Amazing (Bet Now: $4.40) loves wet ground and will give himself every chance near the front. Found the front at Bairnsdale last time out when rolling along and trying hard when second to Shoot For Coomah. Doesn’t have the best of winning strike rates, but does try hard and as a whole, this isn’t a strong race.
4 Winsome Voyage (Bet Now: $10.00) can run an improved race here at odds for the Dean Larsson stable. Resumed in a 64 here where he was off the speed and tried hard. Just lacked the class to go with them late when fifth to Kent Street. He will take good improvement from that run and back to 58 grade, he’s likeable.
Race 4. (14:25) Cassign Harry Chauvel (bm64) 2000m
1 Kissinger (Bet Now: $1.80) looks the good thing on the program. Made a mess of them two back at Warrnambool before going to Flemington where he was wide no cover throughout on a very hot speed yet still had the audacity to keep finding, only getting beat off late when third to Barade. If that hasn’t busted him, he wins this.
12 Nobel Heights (Bet Now: $9.00) looks the one with upside and progression. Matt Cumani trained colt that comes back to the scene of the crime from last start when breaking the maiden tag at start two in good fashion from near the speed. Not sure he can beat home Kissinger, but has less convictions than most engaged here.
11 Misool (Bet Now: $12.00) can be an improver here at odds for the Archie Alexander camp. Resumed over the mile at Pakenham where the market said she would need the run, she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out. She will come on from that and from the soft gate, can fill a first four spot.
Race 5. (15:00) Oti Jericho Cup Cons. Hwt-bm61 4065m
I’m with 4 Legless Nick (Bet Now: $3.40). He was near the speed throughout when racing in the Moonee Valley heat of the Cup and tried hard, but was outclassed behind Dambulla. Better suited here and does have the services of the leading highweight rider in the business in Shane Jackson. Tricky race, but he looks the one.
3 Wolfe Tone (Bet Now: $3.40) is on the quick back up after racing over 2800m at Kyneton on Tuesday where he was given a sore ride, wide no cover for the trip in a very game effort behind Californiafirebird. Been up a while but continues to hold his form and should prove hard to beat against this lot for the Francis Finnegan camp.
7 Jakk’s Right (Bet Now: $8.00) is a leading chance. Colin Little trained gelding that was 1900m to 2500m last time out at Pakenham where he loomed to win when presented but just died on the run late when second to Mr Joobs, but he gapped the third horse. Knock is that Mr Joobs went awful at Sandown on Wednesday, but Jakk’s Right has got room for improvement.
Race 6. (15:40) Redial Midnight Madness (bm70) 1200m
With 5 Shezawitness (Bet Now: $2,10), who is resuming and looks to have come back in good order based on a couple of jumpouts, the latest at Camperdown where she looked to go about her business quite nicely. Form around her from last prep does read well for a race like this and the claim is a big tick. Hard to beat.
3 Uptown Lola (Bet Now: $3.20) is flying at the moment for George Osborne. She has won her past two, winning at Echuca two back before proving that was no fluke with a win on her home track at Kyneton on their Cup Day. Gets in well after the claim for Kelly and if she holds his form, she’ll be hard to hold out once again.
2 Ronay (Bet Now: $10.00) looks much better suited at this level. She resumed in a strong Mares race last Saturday at Ballarat where the track pattern at that time of the day wasn’t in her corner, and perhaps found the class a bit much. Better suited here and with the run under the belt, can run an improved race at odds.
Race 7. (16:10) Charge @ Beersheba Sprint-bm70 1000m
I like 3 Aluf (Bet Now: $5.00) here. He’s a beauty for Jamie Edwards that will put himself on speed and give his all. Was near the speed at Cranbourne last time out and battled away pretty well in defeat behind a handy mare in Seemingly Discreet. That form reads very well for this and think he can land near the front comfortably and prove hard to beat.
6 Paul’s Regret (Bet Now: $1.80) was scratched from a much harder race at the Valley yesterday to be saved for this. Easy kill first up on the home track, or isn’t she going well? Market will tell you if she’s ready or not but on exposed form, she has city class ability and does tend to save her best for when she is produced with fresh legs.
The market will be the guide here with 2 The Last Napoleon (Bet Now: $7.00), who resumes for Kylie Vella. Is a city winner so has the class to beat these and will love a good speed to sit off. Couldn’t find a recent jumpout, but you’d like to think the stable will have him ready for a forward showing fresh. Market will tell you if he’s ready.
Race 8. (16:55) Jericho Cup 4600m
I had 5 Wil John (Bet Now: $3.40) marked a clear favourite so was a bit surprised to see him open favourite alongside Frenzied, with punters quick to rectify that. This guy was very impressive over 3800m on Ararat Cup Day and off that win, he will eat up this trip and does have the Maher/Eustace polish. Happy to be in his corner.
The stablemate 2 Dambulla (Bet Now: $6.00) can run a big race. I thought he was no hope after scraping home to win a weak race at Wagga, but he proved that was no fluke with a very strong win at Moonee Valley, powering to the line in good style. We know the record the stable has with 2000m+ horses and they did win this race last year.
10 Da Deputy (Bet Now: $17.00) finished down the track in this race last year but looks to be going much better 12 months on for David Noonan. The race shape just didn’t suit him at all at Canberra last time out but he stuck to the task very gamely in defeat behind Frenzied. Not sure he wins, but can back him for multiples.
Race 9. (17:30) Goodbye Albany (bm64) 1400m
Laura Lafferty has a very good record on 11 Predicated (Bet Now: $9.00) and third up, hard fit, think he can be a big improver at odds. Was 1400m back to 1200m when racing at Terang last time out and made up good ground late behind Shilo Lass. Now back up to 1400m, he potentially rolls forward and will take some catching.
4 Unfair Dismissal (Bet Now: $2.90) has been a great money spinner for connections and trained David Noonan and they were rewarded with a strong win at Mornington when finishing best in a driving go, just edging clear late. Draws well and is a proven weight carrier so don’t be turned off by the 62kg impost. Leading chance.
6 Valley Of Hearts (Bet Now: $6.00) likes racing at the Bool and with a wet track on the cards, I’m including her Been kept on ice since failing at the mile at the Valley back on October 30 behind Bacchus where the form since has been okay. Gets a really good set up here…if there is a query, is it a strong 1400m? Tempo, I don’t think, will be hot.
