Blacktype racing returns to Ascot this Saturday where the Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) highlights an eight event program. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (15:46) : Get The Tabtouch Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Achernar Star (Bet Now: $2.30) is a talented youngster that resumes for the Simon Miller yard. He debuted in early October where he defied a late market drift to sit on speed and draw clear for a dominant win. Outstanding trial win at Lark Hill to tune up and I think he just wins if he brings that form here.
Big Danger: 2 Colourful Charade (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Oratorio who resumes for the Mitchell camp after debuting here in mid November when sitting near the tempo and fighting on quite well to run third to Keeper Keen. Tuned up for his return to racing with a couple of trials, nothing winning trials.
Long Shot: 7 Yendor (Bet Now: $26.00) is the interesting runner here. She debuts here off the back of three barrier trials so she has had a good grounding for her first raceday appearance. The third trial saw her run second at Belmont, and she looked pretty good there. Will be interesting to see what the market does here.
Race Two (16:26) : Penfolds Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 6 Undisclosed (Bet Now: $2.00) is the best bet on the program and one of the better bets right across Australia for this weekend. She resumed down the straight at Pinjarra against older horses where she was crunched late in betting but not many could have predicted what she did- winning by six without being fully extended. She’s a rising star and if she repeats that effort here, they won’t be beating her.
Big Danger: 1 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $5.00) got the win on the board finally for punters a fortnight back over 1100m here when leading all the way under Pike but she only fell in. 1100 is as far as she wants it, so back to 1000 here and the claim will make sure she is in the finish.
Long Shot: 3 Speeding Comet (Bet Now: $5.50) resumed down the straight at Pinjarra three weeks ago where he found the right part of the track and stuck on well when a close up third to Gee Boss. Dainty Tess franked that form, so it reads well, and he will be better suited around a bend.
Race Three (17:06) : Perth Racing Facebook Maiden 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Blue Houdini (Bet Now: $8.00) is on the seven day back up after racing in a 1200m maiden here last Saturday where he looked to have a lovely sit just off the pace but it turned out to be a tricky spot as he couldn’t build up momentum whereas those out wide did. Draws wide now, so no bad luck in terms of traffic. Giving him another look.
Big Danger: 9 Cayman Bound (Bet Now: $10.00) looked to trial really well at Bunbury prior to resuming at Albany a fortnight back where he sat off speed in the run and chased hard all the way but couldn’t quite reel in Streets Of London. Should take improvement from that outing and rates highly.
Long Shot: 5 Blue Tracer (Bet Now: $10.00) resumed at the midweeks over 1200m here on January 18 where he was a drifter in the market and despite not winning, I thought he ran quite well when fifth to Keeper’s Tale after getting well back in the run. The winner is smart, so I am trustin that form here, and hopefully he can sit closer from the draw.
Race Four (17:44) : Australia Day Cup (72+) 1600m:
Back Me: 2 Pinzu (Bet Now: $3.50) was very good in winning at this track/distance a fortnight back given the pace was an absolute crawl and it did seem difficult to make ground but he did and really surged the final 150m for a dominant victory. Speed should be alright here via Gloryland, so that will only enhance his winning claims.
Big Danger: 8 Sasso’s Circus (Bet Now: $5.50) ran second to Pinzu in that race mentioned above and he seemingly was given every chance in the run by Pike but he was just no match for the turn of foot produced by the stablemate and eventual winner. Not sure he can turn the tables, but he is going really well and has to be included as a key threat.
Long Shot: 3 Abbasso (Bet Now: $14.00) was a drifter in the market in the Pinzu race and he was one that wasn’t suited by the tempo. He did seem to pull a touch in the run and that took the gas out of him when it mattered most. If he can relax a bit better here, and perhaps ridden a touch more quiet, he can be more effective.
Race Five (18:20) : Scenic Blast Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: Just on the wight swing, I’ll lean towards 2 Durendal (Bet Now: $2.50). Like most here, he comes through the Miss Andretti where he trucked up well into the contest and looked the winner for a brief period but was nabbed late by Volkhoff. Meets that horse 2kg better here, so I think he is the way to go, just.
Big Danger: 3 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $4.40) won the Miss Andretti and was given a peach of a steer from Whiting who got on the back of his key rivals before sprinting hard when asking for the supreme effort to get a narrow but impressive Stakes win. Creeping up in the weights but I don’t think it will slow her down too much.
Long Shot: 1 Divine Calling (Bet Now: $9.00) is the most intriguing runner right across Australia this weekend. Just so many unknowns about this former Group l performer who was with Gai before being sent to Hong Kong where he performed quite well early on before tapering away late. Trialled well recently and is now with Fred Kersley. Big market watch.
Race Six (18:55) : Chinese New Year Raceday Next Saturday Handicap (1MW) 2200m:
Back Me: 3 Quite Regal (Bet Now: $17.00) was a big flop when racing over 2000m at Pinjarra a tick under a fortnight back but I think he wasn’t suited by the slow pace and he resented that to an extent under Pike. He has a good record on this track and the claim should help his winning claims in a very tough race.
Big Danger: 2 Macavity (Bet Now: $3.60) is on the seven day turnaround after racing over 1800m here last Saturday where he sat just off the tempo and though outsprinted, he stuck on pretty well in defeat when fourth to Eleven Seconds. First go beyond 1800m, but he does give the impression as if he will handle it.
Long Shot: 13 Flight Of Fancy (Bet Now: $19.00) ran over 2000m at Pinjarra (Metro) three weeks ago and despite his long starting price, I thought he ran quite well when making up good ground late behind Hay Magic. That is a good pointer to suggest he will eat up the 2200m here and is a definite winning chance.
Race Seven (19:35) : Perth Racing Twitter Handicap (1MW) 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Key To Fame (Bet Now: $4.20) attempted to lead all the way over this track/distance two weeks ago and was given a sweet steer by Mitchell but the gelding couldn’t quite see it out and had to settle for second to Liberty Rise. Looks to map very well here and if he can get a cheap fraction, he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 4 Majinika (Bet Now: $2.25) is a talented type that resumes for the Durrant/Miller yard. Won a couple of races in sharp fashion to kick off last prep before failing on a wet track and being tipped out. Been given a nice break and she has really looked the part in a couple of trials. Just has to overcome the sticky draw.
Long Shot: 10 Checkers (Bet Now: $18.00) resumed over this track/distance last Wednesday in a Class 1 and he did a pretty good job in defeat to my eye given the tempo was very slow and he is a horse who does need speed in front of him to run on. If that can eventuate here, especially from the handy draw, he is a knockout chance at odds.
Race Eight (20:15) : Coastline BMW Handicap (72+) 1400m:
Back Me: 9 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $3.50) is bursting to win a race and I think he gets his chance here. He is on the back up after racing last Saturday over this track/distance where he chased hard all the way down the straight but couldn’t pick up the leader Baraki Beats. The form line suggests he doesn’t win, but this is a very winnable race.
Big Danger: 1 Falcon Crest (Bet Now: $8.00) is a very talented galloper that resumes for the Durrant/Miller stable. He won four on the trot to kick off last prep before ending it with a narrow second in the Kalgoorlie Cup. Trial leading in looked strong to the eye and first up at 1400m does suggest to me he is forward enough to sprint well fresh.
Long Shot: 14 Swedish Memories (Bet Now: $31.00) is a handy three year old that takes on the older horses for Simon Miler. He hasn’t raced for four weeks since finishing midfield behind the then impressive three year old Carocapo. Form out of that hasn’t quite held up, but this gelding is Stakes quality when right and does draw to get decent three wide cover and launch late for an in form hoop in Brad Parnham.
