A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday to somewhat cover the meeting being washed out last week. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:30) Www.brc.com.au Handicap 1050m
7 Heavenly Stranger (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a smart way to go here in a two year old race that does have depth to it to my eye. Helen Page trained filly on debut who comes here off the back of an absolute spank job of her rivals in a 900m trial at the Gold Coast where she ran one of the quicker times of the morning. Keen to see how she goes here.
3 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Steve O’Dea trained filly who was kept very safe in betting when debuting here at the track/distance a fortnight back and she a good job in defeat I thought in what looked a hot juvenile race when third to Hopes Eternal. This looks significantly easier and she has the run under the belt.
1 Miracles Aplenty (Bet Now: $7.00) was very ordinary on debut at the Gold Coast behind Pony Power before racing over the short course at Toowoomba and she was much better, bolting up under young Keal. She does have the hard race experience under the belt and is a knockout chance, plus the stable is flying with their juveniles.
Race 2. (13:07) Pakmor Handicap (70) 1050m
11 Rooi Roe (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. Very talented mare from Roma who just got too far back last start over 1100m at Rockhampton, but she made up good ground late in a fast run race when a narrow second to Turkey Beach. Thrives on a track with give in it and should get a sweet steer just off a likely hot speed.
2 Valfierno (Bet Now: $4.00) is a four year old gelding in ripping form at the moment. He is two for two this prep, both over the 1000m, the latest coming a couple of Wednesdays back here where he had the box seat trail before Fradd got him clear air and he showed a lovely turn of foot to put away a handy field with ease. Harder here, but he deserves a crack.
9 You Say No Way (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy type for the Troy Pascoe yard who ran a fortnight back over 1100m at Warwick and yes it was against a weak field, but I liked the way he let down when asked and he put them away well late albeit a narrow win. Has run well in town before and should get a suck run behind the speed.
Race 3. (13:42) Iveco Handicap 1050m
4 Girl In A Million (Bet Now: $4.40) is a nippy customer for the Ben Currie team who has been in really good form this prep. She attempted to lead all the way at this track/distance a fortnight back and gave a really good kick under Brad Stewart but she couldn’t hold out Ice Frost. Right down in the weights, should lead and take some beating.
1 Saint Patricks Day (Bet Now: $6.50) is a smart customer that resumes for the Chris Munce team. This colt won two on the bounce during the Winter Carnival, including the Dalrello, before running a gutsy fourth in the Sires Produce and being tipped out. Hasn’t been sighted since a September 19 trial, but his quality is there for all to see.
6 Cabin Fever (Bet Now: $7.50) is the interesting runner. Heinrich/Rogers filly that is first up here after a disappointing Autumn/Winter prep where she dipped her toe in blacktype company and didn’t measure up. Wasn’t asked to do much in a recent Gold Coast trial, but she does race well on the fresh side and handles a track with give in it.
Race 4. (14:17) Austrans Handicap (75) 2200m
These horses take their turn at winning these kind of races and I think 6 The Rumour File (Bet Now: $5.00) is a knockout chance of getting his turn here. I didn’t mind the way he closed off late in the piece when racing over this trip at the Sunny Coast four weeks back when a close up fifth to What’s That. Another that is hard to trust, but if things go his way, he can threaten for sure.
8 Bronzed Venom (Bet Now: $7.50) had market support at a price when racing over the mile in a Randwick Highway three weeks back and under a lovely ride from Avdulla, the galloper stalked stablemate Cascata Rossa before edging out 250m from home and finishing best in a driving go. Quickly up to the 2200m is the query, but I won’t disagree with Matty Dunn and his thought process.
16 High Africaine (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Ben Currie trained mare who is on the seven day back up after winning over the 2200m at the Gold Coast last Saturday. Given a lovely ride off the pace by Nathan Day, the mare peeled to the better ground and while she didn’t seem entirely happy on it, she got the job done and finished best. Stable is flying and they should always be respected in town.
Race 5. (14:52) Bucher Municipal Plate (Class 3) 1350m
9 Freddie Fox Trot (Bet Now: $2.40) is a very promising three year old for the Les Kelly team who ran over 1200m on his home track at the Gold Coast last time out where he was dominant in winning. Led at an even tempo, kicked strongly at the top of the straight and when challenged, he found another gear. 1350m no issue and he’s the one to beat.
15 Don’t Doubt Da Wife (Bet Now: $4.40) attempted to lead all the way over the mile here a fortnight back where she was given a lovely time of it on speed by Jim Byrne, and she gave a really good kick, but she was just outgunned late by the in form No Annamossity. That hard mile run should toughen her right up for this 1350m assignment.
1 Hotel Coste (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Bruce Hill trained galloper that resumed over 1200m on his home track at the Gold Coast a few weeks back and he worked home pretty well I thought to run fifth to the very promising Freddie Fox Trot, beaten three lengths. He is a second up winner and the rise to 1350m is ideal.
Race 6. (15:27) Driver Recruitment Plate (Class 3) 1350m
14 Colosimo (Bet Now: $2.40) came with a well timed run to win two back at Ipswich but I thought Fradd missed the boat last time out at the Gold Coast. He just got too far back on the filly while Miss Exfactor had pinched a margin and she clung on. I think the 1350m will be ideal and a drop of rain will be a big tick.
3 Night Attire (Bet Now: $12.00) has been given four weeks off since racing at the Sunny Coast where he sat on speed and tried hard to kick, which he did, but he couldn’t hold out the brilliant finish of No Annamossity, who has franked the form since. Back to 1350m is a big tick and he should prove hard to beat.
1 Falkirk Drive (Bet Now: $20.00) is in a bit of a purple patch at the moment for the Scott Morrisey yard. He ran over 1200m at the midweeks here a tick over three weeks back and lapped up the bog track when sprouting wings from the back to win. Saves his best for tracks that he gets his toe in so he gets conditions to suit again.
Race 7. (16:02) Kartaway Handicap 1200m
11 Hi I’m Back (Bet Now: $9.50) ran in the Powerful Saga race at the Gold Coast three weeks back and I thought he did a good job considering he was far too back in the run and the race was dominated by those nearer the speed. He won’t be far back here I think, he has the fitness edge and is a noted swimmer.
Been a fan of 10 Helarocity (Bet Now: $10.00) for some time and I ain’t dropping off. Two for two this time in for Lindsay hatch, the latest coming four weeks back at the Sunny Coast where he chased hard and wore down in form galloper Siliqua. He was 900m-1200m that day too, so now he has had the 1200m run under the belt, he should be better off.
3 Cantbuybetter (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented gelding first up for the in form Ben Currie team. This bloke had a really good Autumn/Winter prep, highlighted by a win in the Members Cup over the mile here during the Carnival. He resumes with no trials, but he is a bomb when produced fresh and he has a liking for Doomben.
Race 8. (16:44) Suez Plate (Class 6) 1200m
12 Our Beebee (Bet Now: $4.00) looks a near good thing here to my eye. Very good mare for Rex Lipp who resumed at Ipswich (Sat Metro) where she just got too far back in the run but closed off nicely late behind Dream Finnish. Been given a little freshen up to recover from that, she loves Doomben, likes being fresh, weighted ideally…ticks the boxes.
The drying out of the track will be a big tick for the in form mare 10 My Girl Hayley (Bet Now: $3.50) because she is an absolute dud on a really wet track. Hasn’t raced for four weeks since winning at the Sunny Coast under an absolute peach from Jim Byrne. If the track gets to a Soft5 or even a Good4, I think she’s probably the one to beat, especially from the gate.
5 Now You See (Bet Now: $12.00) is a mare who is absolutely low flying at the moment for the Ben Currie team. Thought she got nabbed at this track/distance a fortnight back but the photo finish went her way in a deceptive finish. She has been outstanding in recent times and I see no reason why she can’t continue her purple patch.
Race 9. (17:30) Superior Pak Handicap (90) 1630m
This is one of the easier races 5 Dance Of Heroes (Bet Now: $9.00) has faced in some time so a return to winning form wouldn’t shock. Chased a hot speed fresh at the Gold Coast and was gassed before the turn, dropping out to finish down the track behind Torgersen. Freshened up and looked to trial well recently at the Gold Coast, plus he finds Lloyd from a soft draw.
7 Dream Finnish (Bet Now: $9.00) is a mare who has come back really this time in for the Mick Nolan team. Came with a brilliant finishing burst to win fresh at Ipswich (Sat Metro) before racing behind Torgersen at the Gold Coast where she just got too far back but her closing splits were very good. Step up to the mile is ideal.
16 Cornrow (Bet Now: $8.50) is a very consistent type for the Hulbert team who comes through the Urban Knight race at the Sunny Coast on September 30. He got a fair way back off the pace but chimed in with purpose when getting clear air. Just missed out on the win but his effort was sound. If he runs out the mile, he’s a definite chance.
Race 10. (18:10) Nugrow Plate (Class 6) 1200m
12 Live Fast (Bet Now: $13.00) is a very consistent sprinter for the Tony Sears team who is two weeks between runs after racing over 1050m here where he just kept finding the line but just couldn’t quite pick up the in form Ice Frost. Up to 1200m yes, wet track yes, and the big tick, remains down in the weights. Gets the nod.
11 In His Stride (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very good horse that resumes for the Rex Lipp. This bloke ran some ripping races during the Winter Carnival, highlighted by a narrow second in the Eye Liner. Resumes with no trials, and normally needs a run under the belt, but his form on rain affected tracks is very good.
One horse who won’t mind a track with give in it is 5 Monster Of Energy (Bet Now: $51.00). He has been off the boil for some time now for the Brian Smith team but the ticks for me are that he was going to back up last week before it got called off, a sign he had pulled up really well. And the other tick is a track with give in it. He saves his best for it.
