The Golden Rose (1400m) is fast becoming one of the best stallion making races in Australia and the $1 Million Group l is the highlight across nine races at Rosehill this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Golden Rose 🏆: View the Golden Rose Field
Race 1. (12:30) Monstar Foundation Handicap (88) 1900m
Up to 1900m and fitter, 4 Master Shuhood (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) looks one of the better bets on the card. He was 1700m back to 1500m at Randwick three weeks ago and I thought he closed off strongly late in the piece behind Articus, and that form has been well and truly franked via Newcastle and the Cameron/Tibbie. Up to 1900m, with upside, I’m really keen on his chances.
1 Dr Drill (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) has been very consistent this time in for the Maher/Eustace stable. Returns to Sydney, three weeks between runs after racing over the mile at the Valley where he did a good job against the track pattern when second to Gold Fields, who got things to suit on speed. Gets the claim for Robbie Dolan, up in trip and gets a lovely run from the gate.
2 High Opinion (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) could be one to include in wider multiples. This Kris Lees trained stayer was quite good first up on the Kenso track behind Wolfe before going to the Wyong Cup where he got back and was held up for a period of time, and should have finished closer, but wouldn’t have troubled the winner Wu Gok. Back to 1900m on paper looks a little query, but for mine, he’s showed enough in two runs back to suggest he’s got the speed in the legs.
Race 2. (13:05) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1500m
Happy to speck 14 But I Know (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) in the Highway. Ross Stitt nearly got the win in the Highway last Saturday with Fair Dinkum and I think he can go one better with this So You Think mare, who was one of the runs of the day on Tuncurry Cup Day, settling near last in the run and finishing off really nice to run fourth to a progressive type in Enchanting Heart. That followed an impressive resumption on Taree Cup Day where she again closed off hard against the track pattern. If they can run on here, she’s one of the better gambles of the program.
The last 10-15 minutes of betting will tell you if 3 Lolita Gold (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is ready. Talented mare for Neil Osborne that resumes, having not raced since the Kembla Grange Classic when down the track behind Pohutukawa. That form reads just so much better than anything engaged here and the trial at Goulburn was very encouraging. If you like her, wait and see what the market does.
15 Defy (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) looks a chance for the Longmire sisters. He was unwanted in betting when resuming at Moruya but I really liked the way he found the line late when a closing fourth to Whisky’n’Diamonds. Got close second up last prep at Nowra and overall, I don’t think this is a strong Highway, so he doesn’t need to improve much to figure in the finish.
Race 3. (13:40) Heritage Stakes 1100m
6 Pandemic (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) is a sprinter, so I like him back to 1100m. He just found the 1300m a bridge too far three weeks ago at Randwick and had his colours lowered for the first time in his career when down the track behind Yao Dash. Fast run race, like we saw on the Kenso track the start prior, demonstrated how explosive he can be. Just hope he’s got enough petrol in the tank.
The two key scratchings certainly helps the chances of 2 Bellevue Hill (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS), resuming for the WaterBott stable. He looked like he may cop pressure from both The Odyssey and Villami, but with both racing elsewhere, it sets up well for him and if he begins like he did in the latest trial, he should find the front here and with Tim Clark aboard, will take some beating.
I reckon 5 Catch Me (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) has turned the corner. Just looked in need of the run first up in the San Domenico behind Exceedance before taking on the older horses two weeks ago and against the track pattern, I thought her run was excellent when a closing fifth to surprise winner Spanish Dream. Think she’ll take some beating here back to her own age if she continues to improve.
Race 4. (14:15) Shannon Stakes 1500m
I think he’s a bet here 1 Mister Sea Wolf (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). Chris Waller trained gelding that was unwanted in betting first up in the Tramway but despite the slow tempo and track pattern, he worked to the line really well I thought behind Dreamforce, who of course ran a beauty in the George Main and Kolding came out to win the Bill Ritchie, so that form is A1 and he’s a proven track/distance horse.
Was hard to miss the first up run of 3 Gem Song (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) in the Theo Marks. Admittedly he was nearer the inside, which was the place to be, but he still rattled off some strong late splits to run third to Arcadia Queen. Epsom next weeks looks an ideal race for him. Does running here mean they’ll skip it and look towards the Toorak/Cantala? Time will tell, but in this race, he’s hard to beat.
Fitter and up to 1500m are two big ticks for the Chris Waller trained 5 Noire (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS). Paraded like she’d need the run fresh in the Sheraco and that’s how it panned out but loved the way she closed off late off what was a very moderate tempo. Has an outstanding second up record and did win the Shannon second up at this meeting 12 months ago, so she’s right in contention.
Race 5. (14:50) Golden Pendant 1400m
Have to be with 5 Enticing Star (Bet Now: $2.60). She’s a ripper from WA who makes her NSW debut Chris Waller with eyes towards the Everest. She was, at her best, the best sprinter in WA before being sent to Sydney so she has class and her trials have been quite good leading in, though they have been nothing to jump up and down about. Keen to see how she goes here.
7 Dyslexic (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Team Hawkes trained mare who has been excellent in two runs back from a spell. Great late splits fresh in the Show County behind Mizzy before going to the Sheraco here two weeks and you could make a case that she should have won. Was ridden a treat by Jay Ford to land just off the speed but once it came to getting clear air, the gaps didn’t appear. She’s flying and is a definite chance here.
A small field and lack of early tempo has been a winning formula for 4 Pretty In Pink (Bet Now: $27.00) previously so don’t dismiss her. She got the 1/1 sit in the Moreton Cup during the Brisbane Carnival where they walked and it suited her, finishing best to get the win over Brave Song. She resumes here off the back of a solid trial over 1000m at Randwick, so keen to see how she resumes.
Race 6. (15:25) Colin Stephen Quality 2400m
I specked 4 Maurus (Bet Now: $26.00) last Saturday in the Kingston Town and while he beat only two runners home, his run was very good considering they did crawl in front so he was no chance, but his late splits were excellent, building the revs nicely before bottoming out the final 200m. He should eat up the 2400m and Rachel King does ride the John Thompson horses very well.
I don’t think 10 Dabiyr (Bet Now: $2.20) is a proper Stakes class horse, but given the lack of real depth engaged here, he’s one of the hardest to beat. Gave them a spanking two back at the Valley over 2500m before going to this track/distance two weeks ago when doing plenty of work on speed and was a sitting shot for stablemate Gayatri but stuck to the task well in defeat to run second.
7 Master Of Arts (Bet Now: $16.00) could be back on track for the Freedman camp. I thought his Newcastle Cup run had a lot of merit to it given he was back nearer the inside and struggling for clear air, but got it and found the line well enough when fourth to Hush Writer. Like the booking of Avdulla to stand over him and get everything out of the stayer. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (16:05) Golden Rose 1400m
2 Bivouac (Bet Now: $2.50) is a really smart colt and has to be regarded as one of the leading contenders. Outstanding first up win in the Vain before being well held by Exceedance in the San Domenico as a $1.30 pop. That ensured he started near $5 in the Run To The Rose and he won impressively, albeit the race shape suited him perfectly. If we get a similar tempo to two weeks ago, he’s the one to beat. If it’s a testing 1400m, he could be a little risk.
5 Exceedance (Bet Now: $5.00) is the one to beat IMO. He gave Bivouac a spanking first up in the San Domenico before going to the Run To The Rose where he was beaten but far from disgraced behind Bivouac, but given the slow tempo, he had no chance of winning. He looks like he will eat up 1400m and if he doesn’t hit his usual flat spot, where he loses momentum and ground, his brilliance may well get him home.
If you’re looking at 1 Castelvecchio (Bet Now: $9.50), he wants further ground, so potentially, awful placement, but can’t knock the stable wanting to head to this race given he’s worth between $5-$10 Million and already a Group l winner, but a win in this race, and that figure at minimum doubles. His run in the Dulcify was outstanding and would be Winx odds in the Gloaming. If they go hard here, he’ll be the best closer.
Race 8. (16:45) Gloaming Stakes 1800m
4 Quick Thinker (Bet Now: $3.70) is a quality staying prospect for the Baker/Forsman stable and confident he runs well here. He made his Australian debut in the Ming Dynasty where everyone concerned with the horse thought he’d need the run but he produced a brilliant finale from off the pace to win. The strength of that form? Not strong I don’t think, but can’t dismiss any stayer the stable saddles up.
2 Shadow Hero (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the number one seed for the locals when it comes to the Spring Champion. His resumption in the Dulcify two weeks ago was outstanding and he produced some outstanding late splits against the race pattern. He’s got Spring Champion/Derby written all over him, and this should top him off beautifully, but he might have enough class/quality to win.
6 Fasano (Bet Now: $15.00) is a really nice horse for David Payne and he can run well. He spanked them first up over 1100m at Hawkesbury to break the maiden tag before going to the Dulcify where he was jumping up 400m in trip and that was a bridge too far behind Just Thinkin’. Now he’s had the 1500m run under the belt, should hold him in good stead for this 1800m assignment.
Race 9. (17:25) Sydney's West Handicap (88) 1400m
One soft trial is the only query, otherwise I’m keen on 11 Amangiri (Bet Now: $3.90) in the get out. Team Hawkes trains this quality mare, who did a really good job in her first prep, graduating from maiden company right up to Group l level. The form around her is outstanding reading and she was absolutely trucking in the trial last week here on the wet track. If she’s anywhere near right, she’ll be too good for them.
10 Juventus (Bet Now: $6.00) has returned in excellent order for Kris Lees. J Mac gave him a sweet steer over 1500m here a fortnight back and he looked the winner halfway down the straight but Irukandji kicked strongly when required and was just too good for Juventus, who was far from disgraced and did beat the rest by four lengths. He’s flying and can bounce back into winning form.
1 Turnberry (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of Snitzel for the Kris Lees stable that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since May 18 over 1500m here when on speed and doing work before feeling the pinch late when fifth to Star Of The Seas. Was very good first up last prep in a Provincial Championship heat behind Archedemus and his two trials leading in have been solid enough to suggest he can run well fresh.
