Feature racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday with the Lightning Stakes (1050m) featuring a star studded clash between Nature Strip and Sunlight. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out five metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:46) Heineken 3 Handicap (64) 1050m
3 Lake District Girl (Bet Now: $1.85) should be winning this. Quality filly for Tony McEvoy who resumes here after a two run Autumn prep to kick off her career, coming in the Preview and Prelude of the Blue Diamond where she was pretty good each time without winning. Been given a good break and her trial win here last was outstanding to the eye.
2 Invincible Fille (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Darren Weir trained filly who debuted just under three weeks back at Mildura over 1000m where she was well backed at a short quote and she didn’t really give punters too much concern with a comfortable win under a confident and somewhat arrogant ride from Yendall. Time matched up well with the other 1009m race on the same day, which is always a good tick.
The race does fall away outside the top two. 5 Exalted Maxine (Bet Now: $20.00) does look a handy type for Grant Young who got the maiden win out of the way last time out at Murray Bridge with a dominant all the way win over 1000m when controlling things beautifully early before dashing on the turn and holding a margin. She’ll be on speed again and fighting.
Race 2. (13:21) Medallion Homes Handicap (82) 1600m
4 Red Choux’s (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Jimmy Choux gelding for the Darren Weir team who rarely runs a bad race. Got a well deserved city win on the board last Wednesday over the Sandown mile when lifting hard late under Rawiller to outgun The Passage. More depth here, but the mile does look his go and he’ll run his usual honest race.
6 Miss Siska (Bet Now: $2.00) is a daughter of So You Think for Tony McEvoy who is just starting to hit her straps now. Led all the way to win two back at Echuca before going to Gawler (Metro) where she was crunched in betting and duly saluted in dominant fashion under a lovely steer from Jamie Kah. Toughest test to date for this girl but she looks capable.
2 Mr Gustavo (Bet Now: $11.00) could be an improver at odds. He ran over 1400m at Caulfield two weeks ago where he got a fair way out of his ground but finished off well enough late behind impressive winner Demolition. Saves his best for the mile, has upside and he won’t mind a track with give in the surface.
Race 3. (13:56) Schweppes Handicap (64) 1600m
Race really decimated by scratchings. 8 Storm Harbour (Bet Now: $3.00) is the interesting runner. Darren Weir trains this three year old, who raced last Wednesday at Sandown over 1400m here where he just got too far back in the run but I liked the way he closed off behind Greyworm. Not as much depth here and he does have upside, so he’s a definite watch.
6 Rothmoore (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Ricky Moore trained gelding who looks to be racing in near career best form at the moment. Two weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got a mile back off them in the run but had to like the finale behind the in form Rat With Goldtooth. Drops to a 64 race. Yet to carry more than 57.5kg to victory is the concern, but he’s got the A1 form.
1 Aagas (Bet Now: $9.00) isn’t one of mine but I reckon Ryan Balfour has him going quite well at the moment. Landed some good bets when winning two back at Balaklava before going to Gawler (Metro) where he was a solid fourth to dominant winner Miss Siska. That was a 75 and he drops to 64 here so he’s well placed, more so with the claim for Sakai.
Race 4. (14:31) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (90) 1200m
2 Man From Uncle (Bet Now: $3.20) does look quite well placed here by the Weir team. Two runs for the stable, both down the Flemington straight, have been full of merit. Resumed over 1100m when a close up fourth to Malibu Style before running sixth to stablemate Camdus. Third up at 1200m back around a bending track, no excuses this time.
3 So You Too (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing quite well at the moment for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. This bloke ran over 1200m at Gawler (Metro) three weeks ago and I thought Raquel Clark gave the gelding a peach of a ride off the pace, hugging the inside, tracking through behind the speed before angling clear and finishing best. More depth here, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
1 Go The Journey (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Richard Jolly trained gelding who will be out of trouble on speed and giving his all. That’s what he did three weeks back over 1200m at Gawler (Metro) when attempting to lead all the way after being well backed but he just ran out of puff late when second to So You Too. I reckon back on his home track, he should get a soft lead once again and take some beating.
Race 5. (15:11) Irish Raceday September 1 Handicap (70) 2018m
11 Star Patriot (Bet Now: $4.90) is a daughter of Golden Snake for Travis Doudle who has finished behind Rat With Goldtooth at her past two starts at the mile here, running second two back before a closing fourth last time. She doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but she does try hard and won’t be far away, plus the rise to 2000m should suit.
2 Wasabi Bob (Bet Now: $4.40) on top in a race I don’t really want to get involved in. This bloke is having his first crack beyond the mile but is bred to handle it being by Rebel Raider. Has finished behind Rat With Goldtooth at his past two over the mile here and while he has been well held, he’s been far from disgraced. Welcome drop in depth. Just needs to tick the 2000m box.
Race has really been thrown by scratchings. 1 Dance Of Heroes (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Grant Young trained greybeard who is rising eight but is racing in okay. On the seven day back up after racing last saturday over the 2400m on the Parks track where he battled away gamely behind Meli Melo. Likes a track with give and Justin Huxtable is a strong rider so he’ll try and get the best out of this occasional bludger.
Race 6. (15:51) UBET Lightning Stakes 1050m
I can’t back Nature Strip at $1.50 or thereabouts, so I’m going with 7 Sunlight (Bet Now: $2.45). Magic Millions winner who won five on end prior to racing in the Slipper where she ran a gutsy third to Estijaab. Trialled sensationally last week here and looks ready to go, plus bear in mind she does get a weight pull on the three year old.
1 Nature Strip (Bet Now: $1.55) does have to be enormously respected. Two runs for Weir for two wins, both down the Flemington straight, starting off with a dominant win over 1100m before stepping up to 1200m in the Creswick Final and despite getting the wobbles late, he proved too good. He’s got the brilliance and back to 1050m are big ticks. Just can’t get him that short.
6 Lady Soma (Bet Now: $61.00) looks a really nice filly for Sue Jaensch and I wouldn’t be shocked if she got some blacktype to her CV here with a placing. Heavily backed when bolting up fresh at Balaklava before racing over this track/distance a fortnight back where she had no luck in the run when second to Splashette. Fast run 1050m looks ideal and I doubt she’ll get pocketed/held up this time.
Race 7. (16:31) UBET Handicap (70) 1200m
14 Oracabessa (Bet Now: $6.50) looks well placed here by the Jarrod McLean yard. Three runs back from a break have been quite good for the stable, the latest coming over 1140m at Geelong on a wet track where she got well off them in the run and never really looked likely but the found line well enough to suggest 1200m here will be ideal, and the claim for Chan definitely helps.
Forgive a horse for one below par run which I’ll do with 9 Choisborder (Bet Now: $2.00). Dominant win two back at Bendigo before racing over the 1050m here where he was heavily backed into odds and to the eye, I thought he had his chance behind Aadelad. Perhaps back in trip was the negative, so up to 1200m with Lane on, he looks well placed.
12 Sawaiki (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beautifully bred son of More Than Ready resuming for Lloyd Kennewell. Out of the Group l winner Aloha, so you would have thought on breeding he’d be a good horse. He can be, but consistently, he isn’t, which isn’t a concern, but he is first up here and his trial a few weeks back behind Rupture was quite good.
Race 8. (17:10) Lee MInuzzo's 50th Birthday Handicap (75) 1050m
12 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Phillip Stokes trained mare who was I keen on when resuming at Gawler (Metro) three weeks ago and 200m out, she looked the winner, looming large out wide. Just ran out of puff late late and weakened to run a close up fifth to Gold Denari. Loves racing here and is a second up winner.
8 Lockdown Jack (Bet Now: $8.50) is a David Jolly trained gelding who had his first run in over a year at the midweeks recently at Morphettville Parks where he produced a barnstorming finale from the back to overhaul his rivals in such impressive fashion. He’s a second up winner and loves racing on soft tracks.
3 Barood (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Sue Murphy trained son of Choisir who rarely runs a bad race, especially when racing here at Morphettville. Resumed over 1000m on the Parks track just under two months back where he did work on speed and despite looking gone, he lifted late and clung on to get the win. Good fresh horse, handles all conditions and is tough.
