A monster ten race card will be run and won at Launceston where it is the premier day of racing in Tasmania, Launceston Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:17) McKillops Insurance Brokers Maiden 1400m
Happy to butter up on 12 Levissi (Bet Now: $8.50). Was keen on this girl last time out over 1200m at Hobart but just forget she went around. Had no luck in behind them when appearing to have plenty to offer and you could make a case she should have won. Surely won’t get in trouble from the gate here and Nikita remains on.
4 The Last Godfather (Bet Now: $4.20) had specking in the same maiden mentioned above and I thought his effort was quite good. Avdulla just got into a tricky spot from the gate and he had to duck and weave in the straight but the finale was more than sound. Should improve big time with the run under the belt and Yendall steers.
14 Sorturo (Bet Now: $27.00) could be a bit of value to include in multiples. She resumed over 1100m here on January 24 where she got back off the pace and just stayed there really behind Lyonesse, with that form looking okay for this. Recent trial at Longford was encouraging and she does draw to get good cover, plus senior jock on now.
Race 2. (13:52) Finance Brokers Of Tasmanian Handicap (64) 2100m
3 Matiano (Bet Now: $12.00) ran well at the Carnival last year and I think he can get the job done here. Did a power of work last start over the Hobart mile yet fought on really gamely in defeat when a close up third to Barjeel. I think the rise to 2100m is absolutely ideal, he has upside, gets the claim…ticks plenty of boxes.
10 Lovely Lady (Bet Now: $12.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but gee she tries hard. That was the case last time out over 2100m at Hobart where she attempted to lead all the way and fought very hard down the straight but was outgunned late in the last couple of strides by King Manu. Should get a lovely run on speed and does perform better at Launceston.
Don’t be surprised to see 5 White Hawk (Bet Now: $21.00) run a much better race. He ran fifth in the King Manu race mentioned above and I think you can forgive him for that. They absolutely crawled in front and he is a horse who needs tempo, so when they sprinted, he couldn’t go with them at all. Another that prefers Launceston so a definite knockout chance.
Race 3. (14:27) City Of Launceston Handicap (68) 1600m
Back Me: The safe option appears to be 8 Axion (Bet Now: $8.00). This bloke was five weeks between runs when racing over 1400m at Hobart last start and I thought his effort was full of merit. Got back before Froggy looked for better ground and the horse let down hard, only to just miss out on the win when second to Turtles Nest. Yet to miss a place in six runs here and up to the mile looks ideal from the soft draw.
9 Speedonova (Bet Now: $4.80) strung together a couple of sharp wins prior to racing over 1400m here where he just got a mile back in the run and never really looked likely but his finale was excellent behind Cheers Chappy. Trialled up brilliantly at Longford during the week and appears ready to go to my eye.
10 Welcome Invader (Bet Now: $11.00) is a veteran of 47 starts, but I think he’s racing well enough to be considered here. He ran over 1400m here on Valentines Day where he had a stalking position, sitting 1/1, before angling out and letting down nicely but just failing to get the job done when a close up third. Back up to the mile suits and draws well.
Race 4. (15:03) Streetwise Developments Handicap (Class 1) 1200m
Drawn wide, but I’ll side with 1 Banca Boy (Bet Now: $4.40) for the Brunton camp. was well supported when resuming over 1200m at Hobart where he was stuck midfield and wide by John Allen didn’t panic and allowed him to stride at his own leisure. Loomed large, hit the front but no match late for Manilenya. If he can get cover, he’s the one.
6 Breathtaking (Bet Now: $2.70) is a smart looking filly for the Barry Campbell yard who was hard in the market when resuming in a maiden at this track/distance and under Froggy, she absolutely bolted in, giving her rivals a galloping lesson. Looks to be plenty of depth to this Class One, but gee she’s very likeable.
13 Ruthless Lover (Bet Now: $26.00) ran third in the Manilenya race mentioned above and I thought his effort was full of merit. Eight years of age but still retains a healthy zest for racing. Was wide no cover throughout in that race yet kept finding and was only beaten off the final 75-100m. With better luck in running, he can run a beauty again.
Race 5. (15:44) PFD Food Services 3YO Classic 1200m
1 Mister Songman (Bet Now: $2.50) should be putting this field away. They tested him at a mile in the Tasmanian Guineas but the query was there he was too brilliant for the trip and that was proven correct as he weakened late. Been given the freshen up and I think back to 1200m and back to this level, he should be winning.
3 City of Dreams (Bet Now: $5.50) is a handy looking filly for the Adam Trinder team who comes through the 3YO Magic Millions at this track/distance on Valentines Day where she sat on speed and gave a pretty good kick but couldn’t see it out when a close up second to Jubilance. Maps super here and has the fitness edge.
6 Uber Ed (Bet Now: $6.00) was a drifter in betting when resuming in the Carbine Club at Hobart over 1100m where he sat up on speed without cover and fought on well but just ran out of puff late behind Gee Gee Lanett. That run should bring him right on, the blinkers are off and he has a stack of upside. Right up to these with his A Game.
Race 6. (16:24) Steve's Liquor Gold Sovereign 1200m
The safe option appears to be 5 Mystic Journey (Bet Now: $2.80). This filly, trained by Adam Trinder, is three for three to kick off her career. She comes through the Elwick Stakes during the Hobart Carnival where she sat up on speed and was there to be challenged late but gee she found plenty and was holding them late. Just has to stretch it to 1200m.
1 Gee Gee Secondover (Bet Now: $3.50) is a beauty for the Wells camp who has placed in all four career outings, running second at his past three. He tried had to reel i Mystic Journey in the Elwick but just found that filly too good. The big tick for him is that he draws the inside gate and will do no work in the run.
11 Lady Pluck (Bet Now: $12.00) is the watch here. Daughter of Pluck on debut for the Scott Brunton team. This girl has only had the one trial, which came on the inside track at Hobart when placing in reasonable time. Very tough ask to win here on debut against some likely types but the fact she debuts at this kind race means stable may have an opinion.
Race 7. (16:59) GBI Racing Quality Handicap 1200m
Going to take an each way look at 10 The Captain (Bet Now: $21.00), who rises a fair bit in grade but drops big time in weight. Attempted to lead all the way last time out at Hobart and gave a good kick but just ran out of puff late when a narrow third to Red Spyder. Tumbles 5kg from that outing and gets a good rider of leaders, Chris Caserta, aboard.
3 Gee Gee Double Dee (Bet Now: $2.60) strung together three sharp wins for the Wells camp prior to racing in the Bow Mistress where she had to chase a fair way out and that left her gassed late behind Gogo Grace. Has to take on the boys now and give them weight, which isn’t easy, but she does have a fab record at Launceston.
7 Issawi was a drifter in betting when resuming at Hobart and the market got it right as he was left wide no cover for the trip and that early effort just had a toll on him behind Teriki. Draws to get a much better run here and interesting to note that stable finds Dean Yendall. Definite knockout chance.
Race 8. (17:34) Sky Racing Mowbray Stakes 1600m
Only bad luck beats 1 Hellova Street (Bet Now: $1.50). Jury was well and truly out after a couple of inglorious runs in a couple of Tassie features but he bounced back to his brilliant best when spanking them in the Thomas Lyons. Just has to do it now at Hobart, but he should lead for fun, and now he has that winning feeling, he can go on with it again.
I reckon 2 Royal Rapture (Bet Now: $4.60) is ready to do something here third up for the Weir camp at his old stomping ground. Has had no luck in two runs back from a break, both coming in much stronger races at Caulfield and Flemington respectively. WFA suits him ideally, he drops in depth and does have a fab record at the track/distance.
Not sure he can win but for multiples I’d definitely include 7 Zatacla (Bet Now: $41.00). He was ridden more forward than usual last time out over the Hobart mile and he gave a really good kick but just tired late when grabbed by Beaufort Lad. WFA clearly isn’t his go, but with an economical sit on the fence, he could surprise.
Race 9. (18:14) Sky Racing Launceston Cup 2400m
9 Eastender (Bet Now: $8.50) looks one of a couple of great each way plays here. Barry Campbell trains this bloke, who ran a beauty in the Hobart Cup I thought. Got going a fair way out and loomed but he was out of gas the final furlong. I am hoping Newitt can have him closer in the run, and if that eventuates, provided he has recovered from that gut buster, he’ll take some beating.
1 Berisha (Bet Now: $5.50) looks to be going really well at the moment for the John Sadler team. He comes off a last start placing in the Colac Cup where he got back and charged home with the 62.5kg to just miss out on picking up Floral Fever. Tumbles a fair bit in weight from that outing and has a stack of upside. Knockout chance.
7 Up Cups (Bet Now: $17.00) is the other each way bet for me in this race. His run in the Hobart Cup was a beauty and you could make a case he should have placed and finished closer. He just got stuck in the worst part of the track and couldn’t make up the ground but stuck on really well. He should get good cover and a drag up from the draw. Looks clear overs.
Race 10. (18:54) TasBreeders Handicap (64) 1200m
2 Kafoo (Bet Now: $14.00) for me in the get out. Surprised by the drift for him last time out at Launceston off an encouraging resumption. He was wide no cover at Launceston yet absolutely bolted to them on the turn and once Ganderton pushed the button, it was game over. Draws to get a lovely run off the pace and third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
1 Love Magic (Bet Now: $7.00) trialled up well prior to resuming over 1200m at Hobart where he was wide no cover throughout under Pires and that hard effort fresh just told the final 150m as he blew out when fourth to Red Spyder. He is a winner second up and he does tend to save his best for Launceston. Can bounce back hard.
7 Taramaya (Bet Now: $3.70) is a big watch here. Stablemate of Love Magic that resumes after a pretty solid Spring prep, where she didn’t win but ran well for the most part. Best form will come over 1400m+, but she resumes with no trials, something unusual for the stable, and they find Yendall first up. Intent to run well fresh?
